Very thorough review. Thank you! The Watch Crunch review is great, also. As much as I love Seiko watches, I have no interest or experience with the SKX. I do appreciate the upgraded applied indices, and other touches that have been brought to the GMT. Originally this watch interested me simply for the GMT complication. I considered a purchase because this will be in important watch in Seiko’s history. The clasp is a real let down, but I assume a nice Strapcode Jubilee made for an SKX would fit. Lack of sapphire is not great, but again is probably upgradable. Non screw-down crown is concerning, but the friction bezel is the thing I just can’t live with. And even if I could, would I want to spend another $200 to upgrade the bracelet and crystal? The excitement for me will have to lie in the movement. Micro brands will make better watches with this movement for less money. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
Thank you for putting it down so well. Seiko 5 GMT has its flaws. It can be a great project to get the improvement through mods. And the Seiko modding community must be gearing for the challenge. There is a lot of watch building knowledge that comes with modding. Something I enhoyed about the earlier videos from Watch Crunch.
Another great review. I still can’t believe there’s no screw down crown. That would have been a real game changer in my opinion.
There are ups and downs with the new Seiko. Better be warned. Can not wait for the mods to start piling up.
