I like to think the cipher is real, but the key was in something so innocuous and mundane, like probably the local newspaper or a diary, that Thomas knew no matter how much anyone tried, nobody could ever hope to open it.
Although the most incredible part of the story, and strongest point of doubt, is not the size of the treasure itself, _but how none of the original explorers betrayed and killed each other for it._ People have done far worse for so much more less, so who knows, lolz.

    • @frankowalker4662

The key will be something that the families know about. A favorite bedtime story, a popular book or even the family Bible. (there are so many different versions)
As for your second point, they might have killed each other. There is no trace of the expedition before, during or after.

It's is almost like it was a pact between brothers in arms in a sense.
I agree with what you said about the cyper is real and might be in a news paper or what not.
But I do think it could be a treasure buried but it's wealth I'd the knowledge used to find it.
First example the second cypher is the well what most Americans find the most important text. So if this is the first but the first is the second. And it could all be mixed up what is the second and third most important text?? 🤔
I think they would have some bible play in it maybe for the first cypher but the 3rd no ideas.

The biggest problem to this story is that no average joe on Earth is going to bury a couple tons of gold and silver and walk away. Every last one is going to cash in and start spending.
Then there is the logistical problem of moving such treasure across a thousand miles of rivers, mountains and roadless terrain. Let's not forget about the Comanches that stood between them and Virginia, or the Mexican government, which regarded such adventurers as pirates, and executed them if they caught them.
    This is just a hoax.

Gotta wonder how many people have set up bots and fed them every piece of literature from the time they could, and all books and papers they could find, and had them run them as ciphers starting from every letter individually. Just millions of calculations instantly generating results that would take humans eons to produce. Could just be starting from a random page in an old bible print, starting from the third letter of the second paragraph, and using it as a cipher.

Putting the puzzle aside for a moment I can't help feeling that it is indeed an exercise in futility. If they did hide the gold then it's just too much to actually believe they couldn't find where they had hidden it. You would have had to be looking for a very specific location that the hider would have chosen after careful consideration. Certain aspects would have been very specific to him to just forget the location. Also, I'm not really understanding why they didn't just cash it all in when they had their hands on it and put the money in a bank which would have had the money insured by the US Govt should it be stolen etc.
You've spent many months digging up the gold only to bury it and not benefit from the life-changing amount of money even when shared out equally. I don't see any benefit in not cashing it in immediately and then there are the amount of people who had a share, not one of them protested that they wanted the money immediately and not risk losing it all by trusting one guy to hide it?
Nah, sorry, just not buying it. There is no logical reason to hide the gold and especially only one of them being trusted to hide it and know where it was.
The supposed hider either stole the money and kept it all for himself then telling the rest of the men that he had forgotten the actual location. If he did tell them that then why couldn't he decipher the code he himself had written then entrust it to someone who could have ignored his request and found it himself.
Just doesn't make any sense to me, nobody could be that stupid and not be subsequently murdered by the other guys for trying to bullshit them with the lost location bullshit.
I would have tortured the shit out of him until he revealed the truth and I wouldn't have even entertained the idea he suffered from acute amnesia and had lost it. Anyway, the location was supposedly in the clues, how the fuck do you not only forget where you buried it but then also forget what the coded messages meant which reveal the location?
    Nice try Thoughty lol.

I hate to admit this to everyone, but the party already recovered it long time ago. If you want more information, you need to start researching about James Jopling's Harkening Hill purchase and arrival of Castleton Johnson in the Peaks of Otter.
To also give you a hint, research about the boulders toppled by a group of young man on Sharp top mountain and the removal of those stones that was later sent to Washington Monument, inscribed with "From otters summit, Virginia's Lofties Peak to crown a monument to Virginia's Noblest Son".
Another hint, John Wood, Mary Polly-Dooley, Elizabeth Wood Smith played an important role to the party's success.(feel free to ask me questions)

the second one that was solved had very very poor spelling when directly translated, maybe he had bad spelling, maybe he slightly miscounted what number a few letters were when making the code, maybe a bit of both? either way perhaps that's why computers can't solve it? perhaps computers would be looking for properly spelled words and couldn't find any because the real words are really badly spelled, thus making the code much harder to crack by complete accident

Those numbers look EXACTLY like the results that come out of the encryption algorithm I wrote for photographic tokens. An image or set of images are the input and the output is a group of positive integers under 1000; each separated by a full stop. The output is saved as a .txt file and can be further compressed (but I've not yet perfected the compression algorithm). To decrypt, the computer needs to be on a certain destination device, be given a key, and verify itself with the origin of the encrypted file (something that is dependent on a combination of the first two and a proof that no changes have been made to the original file). The destination device is itself by default [-1], but that feature can be turned off before encryption [0] or it can be set by giving the algorithm the destination device's MAC address ['string value'], or it can also be auto-quarried by the program [1] if the user is not sure.

The fun thing about ciphers is you never know if it's legit or just someone messing around.
Back in high school I used to make ciphers using different common alphabets, symbols, and such along with completely made up alphabets like chicken scratches or hieroglyphs. Always had the keys separate from the ciphers and would give them to my friends to solve but they were always about just random stuff. If any survived and gets found some day it'll be a little mystery that ends up being something like a quote or random message to the original recipient. Also wrote an English paper in cipher using the simple Chinese alphabet which used the alphabet as a direct key so maybe a poorly written essay on some book too.
