Great Video! Happy growing from Alberta
As usual, thank you Duncan, appreciate the kind words! Welcome!
Very helpful
Great video. Just started with the Nepenthes and have ordered the cape sundew from California Carnivorous plants and cannot wait for their arrival to start growing them. This video is very helpful
The pings are my favorites but I have a capensis cross sundew from California Carnivores that is absolutely amazing. 🌱
I do truly love pings, really love them. But... When those sundews catch that light through the window, wow!
Thank you! Love this video!
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words!!
Wow, Your collection is growing and your plants are taking off from last year
Thank you Larry! I'm always struggling to find more room! Collection is definitely more diverse now, which in really excited about.
I truly love watching your videos, and you are helping me a lot by sharing this information. And BTW good luck with your dreams, you will achieve these goals. Believe in yourself!
Thank you Leo! Appreciate you!

i liked the sincere thank you so i subbed. great info
Thank you so much for your support! I appreciate you!
Such amazing plants! I have a fly trap and a couple pitcher plants, hopefully I’ll be getting a sundew next time report cards roll in 😂
You definitely should, or even some pings. You won't be disappointed. Such amazing gnat and fruit fly catching machines!
My ping is alive and catching gnats as we speak (end of feb in Ontario) and mine has been in sphagnum since the day the nursery sent it to me.. and I keep it damp all the time.. sooo I am doing the exact opposite of your suggestions. I must have a super ping 😉💚🌿💪
It's rarely black and white with carnivorous plants. I'm so happy your ping is doing great! I will caution you however. I started my ping collection with 3 plants. I kept them all in a tray of water all the time. They all grew great for about 6 months. One day, I noticed the bottom leaves of one of them turning yellow, by the time I figured out what was wrong the whole plant was fading to yellow, this was only a matter of a couple days. It was rotted and dead about 5 days later. By the time I realized my plant had rotted it was too late. The other two never had any leaves fade, but this one was hit hard. I figured out then that these plants can do great in a lot of water, until they don't. I would still caution you to let the ping dry out just a bit between waterings. When rot hits, it hits hard and swift. I hope you never deal with rot, but a plant in water all the time is subject to it. Also, my pings just seem happier and flower more often when I let them dry out between waterings. Good luck!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I'm about to start growing ping, ur info is really helpful!
Man I can't wait for spring.. my windowsill is right above a heater, the humidity is being sucked out of there like crazy lmao. Out of my 4 nepenthes, 3 haven't made pitchers since November.
My fourth one is a ventrata ofc, it's making two pitchers at once somehow. Humidity is like, 25% there yet it's still pushing em out lmao
Nice video, gonna look into getting butterworts and drosera!
Me too, spring/summer can't come soon enough for my plants. Definitely look into getting a butterwort and drosera, they are so much fun to grow!
Your channel is awesome, it's been a huge help in caring for my venus flytraps and an amazing knowledge base. I'm looking to grab a pitcher plant and a sundew, do you have any suggestions for which varieties of those two plants would grow well outdoors in Southwest Florida? (the flytraps seem to love the outside heat and sun with tons of new growth, and I'm going to put them in a mini fridge come winter)
Most pitcher plants and sundews do not require a dormancy, which can be the tricky part of having carnivorous plants in Forida. I'd say you can pick almost whichever kind you really want and they should thrive down there. Neps really like some extra humidity. The sundews will need some extra sun but most neps don't need a lot of direct sun.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Comments like this are so motivating for me!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Awesome, thank you for the tip. I love the neps so thats perfect, I was just a bit spooked by how the product description says they grow best around 80 degrees and it gets to 100 a lot of days during the summer these last couple years
is Drosera Graomogolensis a good candidate for the windowsill?
I have a pot of subtropical/tropical sundews on a windowsill, they dont get much sun but got a 60W growlight, though most (except Capensis) barely produce any dew
😍 what variety of ping are the jadey looking ones?? Beautiful!!
Those are pinguicula sethos.
Hi, I was wondering what kinds of plants I could put together in a cute little pot setup? Like, could I put a pinguicula with a Cephalotus because they both like sandier mixes? Or would that cause problems? What could I grow with drosera burmannii? Anyone’s input would be amazing!
I think I killed another fly trap, but will be getting another that doesn’t need dormancy, I have extra light , your video is very informative.
Oh no! Venus Flytraps can be a little tricky. Maybe one of these would be easier to start with then move to venus flytraps. Especially since none of these really need dormancy.
My house has a tiny ghat problem. It drives me absolutely up the wall. I just got into house plants. Like I have 2 currently propagating in water from a friend new to house plants, and I can already tell I NEED some kind of Pinguicula.
I have a D. regia coming in about Friday! From what I have read they are the only carnivorous plants that will die of starvation if they are not fed unlike the other carnivorous plants.
I had never actually heard that, how fascinating! Mine catch insects fairly regularly, so haven't ran into that issue. Pretty interesting though
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub From what I have read, they are from South Africa but in decline in their native habitats. They grow in a similar manner to Darlingtonia with the cool roots, but their roots need aeration. So, I'm going with long fibered sphagnum moss with perlite and orchid bark in a white pot. It's actually the only species which I'm aware of that doesn't mind fertilizers in the soil albeit highly diluted unlike other species. Tricky to grow from seed because they wind up starving to death. Mine will be bigger so I'll be taking some root cuttings in case I lose my first one I'll have some backups.
I just got home a Sundew and a ping, hopefully I can provide the right care for them!
also have 4 venus flytraps, one seems a bit different than the others coz its way longer stalks... but not sure why that is xD and of course my 3 purple pitchers, sarracenia...... so.... I mean you'd think my house would be free of flies in no time right xD nah.... also have a couple of succulents, which people say "produce" gnats.... not so sure about that, i see more from other flowers lol.... perfect mix?
One makes bugs, the other eats them. Sounds perfect to me!!!
Great video! I have a pitcher plant growing in our master bathroom by a southern window. It's doing fabulous and has many new pitchers. How can I propagate it?
I found your video on propagating the pitcher plant. ☺️👍
Ha! I was going to shoot you the video link. Hope it was helpful!
Wish I could visit California carnivores. 😢
Me too! Such an amazing nursery.
Would be great to have that sticky one Drosera to put in my room to kill mosquitos.
Heat brings those pests here.
I hate them.
Do nepenthes need good drainage in their pots if they're being top watered? Also, what humidity level do they need? It's pretty dry where I am so do they need to be misted at all?
Yes, they do not like sitting in water, good drainage is a must. Top watwr until you see water draining out the bottom holes. You can mist but that's been proven to not help a lot with humidity. Try to place above a kitchen or bathroom window for extra humidity. Many nepenthes need excess humidity but ventrata can grow pretty well with low to moderate hunidity.
My nepenthes stopped pitchering a couome of months ago, they are at a consistent 70% humidity but im not sure if they're getting enough sunlight as its been very cloudy recently, is that the reason?
It definitely could be. My pitchers slow way down in the winter time. Usually get way more during the summer when I can get them more light.
Keep sundew definitely not for beginners. It's dyind without any reason, even watered by less then 10ppm water. Neither fungicide helps to stop rot on drosera.
The dionea or pinguicula, are more or less capable to survive at beginners bands.
I definitely disagree here. I have a cape sundew growing in almost all my planters. I actually have to "weed" my planters all the time to get rid of these. I wish I could stop them from just popping up all over the place. They grow with my neps, pings and flytraps.
Can I pot pitchers sundews and flytraps together???
Nope! Actually, all three require fairly different watering and winter periods. Flytraps need a cold dormancy, so they can't be with either of those. Sundews love sitting in water all the time and nepentheas do not. They want to dry out a bit before watering again. I'd probably avoid planting any of these together.
l just got a north American pitcher plant should I repot it into a bigger pot?
I guess it depends, but probably not until dormancy. Usually at the end of dormancy is the best time to repot a Sarracenia.
I've read it's best to propagate pings in spring. Is that while the leaves are still in succulent stage, or does it not matter?
This may be true Tracie, however... My hit rate is always so high on Pings, it doesn't really seem like it ever matters when I propagate them. I typically always get the same high hit rate results. I do have a video about propagating pings, if you're interested! @@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks so much! Starting my 1st set today 👍
Keep them covered, it will speed up the process. It's so much fun!
Question: I’m guessing that keeping the substrate pretty damp is likely to generate some fungus gnats.
Will these plants eat the fungus gnats?
Yes! Sundews and pings feast on fungus gnats.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub
Great!
Thank you!
I prefer the pygmy sundews
I don't currently have any pygmy's but definitely interested in getting some someday.
In the UK I've found East facing windowsills/Gardens are really bad for carnivorous plants.
I think it's really area dependent. Probably lots of things to consider but my west facing is pretty close to my east facing. Neither are great for sundews but pings and neps both do awesome in them.
You should’ve included the cephalotus
I would have but they are kind of hard to grow. I wouldn't recommend a beginner start off with a ceph.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I was a beginner. In alaska no less
Do they catch mosquitoes?
Yes, all three do. Although, probably not enough to control the population of them. The sundews and pings are great for catching mosquitos.

For being first, you got the slow clap.

I love all three, neps are giving me a hard time tho
Lol, getting the right balance with neps can be super tricky!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub lowii x ventracosa loving it here
Are these plants safe in case a cat or dog digests them?
Yes, they are all non toxic to dogs and cats.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thank you😊
Do they eat a lot? I wanna fight fruit fly
They definitely can, I had a few leaves 100% covered at one point. They can do some damage. Both pings and sundews. Pings tend to do a little better on a windows sill though.
I just tried your website. After 3 minutes of having to close an ad every 5 seconds, I gave up on the site. Absolutely ridiculous!
Your uploads are unhinged man
