Absolutely fabulous performance ❤ Bach's Matthew' Passion is the favourite for many, and with these period instruments it's just magical . It's what Easter is all about ❤🙏👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
If period instruments are so great, why does almost nobody listen to the Well-Tempered Clavier on harpsichord? And that includes the large majority of classical aficionados.
All soloists are just exceptional, excellent, brilliant. They possessed wonderful voices, unique both in timbre and technique. Whole text is so transparent and therefore powerful in its meaning. And their musicianship is absolutely astonishing. Of course orchestra and choir always keep up with them.
Diese Aufnahme ist ein wirkliches Gesamtkunstwerk! Höchste musikalische Schöpfung in dem ästhetischen Rahmen eines sakralen Bauwerkes wie der Chapel of the Kings College in Cambridge, vorgetragen von Sängern erlesenster Qualität! Ein wahres Ostergeschenk an jeden Zuhörenden!

The clarity is outstanding and the performance is second to none. I'm glad someone took the trouble to record it. I consider this to be Bach's greatest work. (And yet, at one point, Bach was no larger than the period at the end of this sentence. That's the true miracle.)
Had it not been for him, the perfomance would've got a way more likes than 1.7K out of 118K views. He spoiled everything, including a really good orchestra and the choir

I adore Richter, although I have to admit Klemperer is a little slow even for me. Yes, I agree most "period" performances are disagreeable with their bouncy bouncy gigue style and excessive accent on every downbeat.
Women simply werent allowed, so we dont really know what his preference might have been. Nor do we know what tempo he would have taken. As far as size of forces, he was on recored as complaining to his employer at having insufficient choir.
Wonderful music. But I really dont understand why this recording from 1994 is published this 2023? Is it of nostalgic reasons? Compared to new recordings it lacks of good picture and good sound.
Perhaps it's because it a fantastic performance and picture quality is not first and foremost in listeners minds and can get past the technological limitations which you felt the need to complain about.
This music is so beautiful. It brings tears to my eyes as I listen to it. JS Bach is an absolute genius. As far as this version is concerned, I think the Choir of Kings College-Cambridge and Brandenburg Consort have done a remarkable job. I have no complaints. Sure, maybe if this were recorded today, the sound and the video would be a tad better, but I am not going to find fault with this version because of that. The orchestra and choir did an outstanding job, what more is there to say.
I don't quite get the sense of tension, drama, premonition in the opening that the score is crying out for. It's all a bit delicate. BTW, Dame Emma, as lovely as the voice is, is hardly an original instrument. Might as well have a female choir with boy soloists - that would be just as silly. A cursory glance at the historical facts would reveal that J.S. would have been more likely to use castrati, had he been a Catholic musician in a Catholic land. Never, ever women in church, "protestant" or Catholic.
A story of The Passion that fills us with emotion and deep meditation.
This is how this piece should be performed. A small orchestra and choir in an intimate setting. Wonderul performance!
