- An exciting concert from the Leipzig Bach Festival 2022: St John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach (1749 version). The Choir & Orchestra of the J.S. Bach Foundation sing and play, conducted by Rudolf Lutz. The concert takes place at the tradition-steeped St Thomas Church Leipzig, where Bach himself spent time working.

The St John Passion, BWV 245, one of the five Passions composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750), is one of the only two that have survived in their entirety (the other being the St Matthew Passion, BWV 244). The premiere performance of the St John Passion - also referred to as the Passio secundum Joannem - was held on Good Friday 1724, in Leipzig’s St Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche).
Bach was cantor at St Thomas Church in Leipzig from 1723 until his death in 1750. During this time, he performed the St John Passion himself at least four times in one of two main churches in Leipzig - and rewrote it for each one of the performances. Each of the revisions was extensive. He changed the structure, the instrumentation, the music, and sometimes even the text. On the basis of the four different versions of the St John Passion that he performed, Bach’s approach to working on this great piece of church music is still quite easy to understand today.
The principal textual basis of the St John Passion are chapters 18 and 19 from the Gospel of John, some of which were transferred verbatim. In addition, interpolations of hymn stanzas for four-part choir form a framework through which the Passion can be inserted into the liturgical context. It is not known who arranged the text of the St John Passion for Bach.
Nowadays, the St John Passion is usually performed in concert rather than at church services. This way, its highly dramatic effect can be fully appreciated.

My favorite composition by Bach. He was not just a brilliant composer, but also a brilliant theologian. That opening chorus with bright triumphant lyrics coupled with dark harrowing music captures that Johannine paradox of Christ Crucified as simultaneously Victim and Victor, which prompts from the listening believer a swirl of both contrite agony and joyous ecstasy. Indeed, Good Friday is not 'Happy' Friday, but given the Atonement He achieved for us, it is most certainly good. Soli Deo Gloria!

Trop drôle y a des commentaires dans toute les langues mais y a que à vous qu'on demande de parler en anglais (aux espagnols on leur répond même dans leur langue !), néanmoins ça reste la meilleure pièce musicale du monde .

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser großartigen und perfekt komponierten Johannespassion mit gut harmonisierten Stimmen des ausgezeichneten Chors und herrlichen Stimmen aller genialen Solisten sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente. Der intelligente und geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Barockorchester im gut analysierten Tempo und mit dramatischer Dynamik. Wahrhaft tiefempfunden!

Les humiliés, les miséreux, les désespérés, malades etc. Puisse ce moment béni et empreint de spiritualité être un soutien pour nos petits Arielito et Kfir BIBAS et pour tous les enfants victimes des guerres multiples II ravagent la planète! Enfants de tout continents qui vivent sous les bombes, dans des camps de réfugiés, fuyant par mer et par terre pour échapper à la violence des adultes qui devraient pourtant avoir à coeur de préserver le futur de L'Humanité! Vielen Dank für das Hochladen der überarbeiteten Version. Wir waren im Juni in der Thomaskirche, wo durch die Akustik leider vieles verloren gegangen ist, was aber in der Aufnahme wunderbar zu hören war, die Dynamik und verschiedenen Klangfarben. Beeindruckend die differenzierte Gestaltung des Tenors D.Johannsen in den Rezitativen und Arien, die Darstellung eines gewissensgeplagten Pilatus durch M. Helm und natürlich P. Harvey als sehr menschlicher, nahbarer Jesus. Berührend die Arien von M. Feuersinger und A. Potter und natürlich der extrem engagierte Chor und das Orchester unter der Leitung von R. Lutz. Ich war wieder einmal regelrecht erleichtert über den wunderschönen Schlusschoral, der nicht, wie leider oft gehört, grob und martialisch endet, sondern innig und äußerst geschmackvoll. 💐

Oh yes, a superb evangelist. Beautiful clarity and a sympathetic reading, not buried in the score but telling the story to the audience. Quite possibly the most thoughtful performance I have heard.

ALTHOUGH I HAVE PERFORMED THIS PASSION MANY YEARS AGO, LISTENING TO YOUR BACH FOUNDATION PERFORMANCE LEFT ME INTOXICATED AS A CLOUD FLOATING ATOP OF A GRAND MOUNTAIN. IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL AS IF I NEVER HEARD THIS BEFORE. I TURNED IT ON TO LISTEN FOR A MINUTE OR SO, , AND THEN I COULD NOT STOP IT UNTIL THE END.

At the resumption of "Herr, unser," 05:40, the pulsing ostinato of the continuo, or ground bass, almost prefigures the reliance on percussive rhythmic ambience assumed by much of 20th century music, in forms both serious (Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Reich, Glass) and popular (jazz, rock, folk, R&B).
Nothing conveys the power of rationality or grace of precision more insistently, and effectively announcing Modernity, than the "sound of ground" that compels even the ashen-haired among us to rock in our seats, involuntarily, in perfect rhythm.

Wenn man diese Musik hört, wird man wieder demütig, ob vor dem Weltgeist, dem lieben Gott oder auch nur vor Johans Sebastian Bach ist dabei eigentlich egal. Die Tenor- und Bass-Solisten singen geradezu überirdisch und die gegen den Zeitgeist wieder langsamer genommenen Choräle erzeugen beim Hören eine Gänsehaut.
