- Trace a year in the life of a platypus, and explore how the animal’s unique adaptations ensure its survival.
--
Waddling along the parched Australian earth, a female platypus is searching for fresh water. Over the past year, a severe drought turned rivers and streams to mere trickles. She barely survived and was unable to reproduce. Could the next year bring a change in luck? Gilad Bino traces a year in the life of a platypus, and explores the unique adaptations that ensure this ancient species' survival.
Lesson by Gilad Bino, directed by Petya Zlateva, Compote Collective.

It's great that they have the ability to do that and make these videos enjoyable and accessible to all!
UA-cam made it harder to make captions.

We are very lucky that the platypus is alive today. Imagine finding a fossil of this thing… try piecing that together 😂
Iirc when they sent the first platypus skeleton to taxidermists in Europe they thought it was a joke.
Or their fossil never found but the aborigin people knew this animals for long time. When they told the platypus to us, we might consider them as mythical beast

So silently and cleverly TedEd also put up the issue of decreasing natuaral habitats due to overgrazing, fires, deforestation, urbanisation etc. along with the story🙌💚
they also acknowledged the present-day ecological effects of european colonialism. so good.

Why is their no mention of the constant "doo bee doo bee doo ba doo bee doo bee doo ba" tune that plays wherever they go?

But they were too scared to actually call out any specific group. “White settlers” bro that’s like half the planet be more specific
Fun Fact: Not only is Platypus Venom resistant to morphine it's also INCREDIBLY painful. A man was once stung by one in the hand and said it was more painful than the shrapnel wound he received in combat during his time in the military. The venom is fortunately not lethal, but the pain will make you feel otherwise.
Dangerous and scary yet fascinating.
That quote is so appropriate😂
The Platypus reminds me of that meme in which Noah is asking other animals "What the heck is this?" referring to their hybird offspring
Hybird?
That's why evolutionary biologists love Platypus, they can teach us so much about primitive mammals!
We are so lucky to have them still living in our era
So true.
You give evolution an isolated place like Australia and she goes absolutely wild.
Evolution built the platypus while nobody else was looking, just for the LOLs.
Not sure what you mean... Platypus have been around for 65-120 million years, stayed relatively unchanged. So they were around when non-avian dinosaurs roamed Earth. Australia split from Gondwana about 180 million years ago. By the way, the first human only appeared 2 million years ago..
