    I definitely think a lot of companies are starting to die out because the beauty industry is way overly saturated with too much to even choose from, not to mention too much of the same thing. It’s all become about the money and not the consumers.

      Agree. There’s too much stuff being pumped out and people don’t care like they use to. You can only have so many eyeshadow palettes before it’s the same thing over and over again. I don’t even think people are buying because of the packaging. Skincare is so personal I feel like once you have a regimen that works, you’re not gonna change it because someone you watch on UA-cam creates a line. Things are so expensive now, people have to pay for food before buying a new bronzer.

    We are entering into an age of austerity.
    We don't want to see people throwing money down the drain, sob stories about being "too rich and famous", and basically using $100 bills as toilet paper.... throwing away money that WE don't have and that the amount of money they spend on a tacky bag could pay for someone's university education! It's capitalism at its worst, I'm sick of it personally too, and honestly feel like the new bourgeoisie need to be a little less flaunt away and a little more fly away from the angry mob of the disenfranchised ready to take what they waste by force, if you know what I mean.
    None of these "influencers" are even remotely relatable anymore and that's was the only reason I followed them in the first place, so now I happily don't follow or care a whit about them because I have my own crap, and because I don't even know or recognise who they are anymore. Their character always changes, without fail, once they meet their goals and see the dollar signs coming in reflected in their greedy, piggy eyes and, imo, they deserve to be humbled. I'll bring marshmallows for the bonfire.

    I’m torn on the Mielle thing. I’m white, but I’ve been buying black-owned and black-centric haircare for years because it just works better for my hair and generally they avoided silicones and other ingredients that more mainstream brands included at the time (which my hair didn’t like). I’ve had an experience where I was in the “natural haircare” aisle and a woman of color gave me the side-eye and said “this isn’t for you people.” I’m not ignorant to my white privilege, but that stuck with me (and that was maybe in 2008, when I was still college-age).
    I can’t explain everything in a YT comment, and I do understand the concern that the item will sell out, increase in price, change formulation, etc… but that’s a concern that happens anytime an item “goes viral” no matter the intended audience. I worked at Sephora for 7 years and I remember when TikTok/YT/IG would make products viral that we’d carried for YEARS, and then for the following months our regulars who bought those items religiously would get mad at us because they were always out of stock. This was irrespective of who the item was intended for.
    I welcome more opinions on this! I don’t want to sound like I’m minimizing a valid concern (as I’m well-aware of the lack of diverse representation and the “otherness” that these kinds of situations bring up) but at its heart it’s not so different from any viral product. I do think it’s interesting though that the news broke about P&G right after, though I’m sure that was months in the making.

    • @TheRonnieaj
      @TheRonnieaj Рік тому +36

      Yeah, but when there aren’t a ton of options available, formula changes radically decrease where we can turn. It’s taken literally decades to see decent options for Black hair in chains, where we don’t have to make our own or find the independent stores that carry them. The fear of those few options being further truncated is a real and very frustrating one.

    • @lisafeldmann9863
      @lisafeldmann9863 Рік тому +22

      I agree with you. With success comes some unintended outcomes regardless of the product. The increased sales of the Mielle (sp?) Product resulted in success and recognition for the brand; a payoff for their hard work and dedication to the quality of its products. Change is guaranteed and let's just be glad this brand is receiving both increased status and recognition as well as financial success.

    • @berlineczka
      @berlineczka Рік тому +38

      On the other hands, costumers outside of the intended audience bring profit to the company. If a brand is bought only by the - by definition - smaller group that it is intended for, the company may 1) go out of business, 2) stop producing some items because they were not profitable.
      It's like... when white women buy darker concealers as liquid bronzers, all the company sees is that darker concealers SELL, so they will keep making them, and maybe even adding shades. When white women buy from black companies, and/or products intended for kinky hair because it works for their hair too, then they are supporting black businesses and products for black people with their money, and help to keep them afloat. As a whit person, maybe restrain from buying when a product for other skin tones goes viral, but otherwise I'd say: go for it.

      I’m a hairstylist, and I find people of all backgrounds have wave to curly to coily hair types, and I try to find the best brands/products for each individual client. Mielle is a great brand for those hair types, however the product in question is a scalp moisturizer that encourages hair growth, gets rid of itchy scalp, etc. A product like this that’s intended for the scalp can work for anyone with hair on their head. It’s a great product. I’ve seen many influencers promote this product. My biggest concern going forward is the formulas of their products not being changed, as with other brands that have been sold. Lastly, one thing I’ve found helpful as a hairstylist, is to look at individual products, and not brands as a whole. It’s ok if your hair regimen has products from several brands, whatever best works for you.

      @Aaren Jackson let me ask you this then, why is P&G or other audiences the ones to blame with this? They couldn't do anything without someone to agree to it first. The owners clearly cared more about expanding than sticking with their core audiences. Who knows why, maybe for actual legitimate reasons, or maybe because they don't care or just want money. Idk why it's such a big deal that they're moving up though. I get that you're scared of changes, but it's also unfair to say it's bad. They're just making business decisions, because the business is what matters in the end

      Yeah, that's how I feel about all celebrity brands tbh. Like, I get it, they're a female celebrity so they've had to wear a lot of makeup, but they aren't makeup artists. That said, if they want to invest their money on the venture it's on them. They'll lose a lot of money unless they can come up with an actually good product. Rihanna noticed a gap in the market and was wildly successful with her foundation line. In contrast, when Lady Gaga's brand came out the reviews were awful and people thought it was sketchy to buy makeup from Amazon. They had to go back to the drawing board after this failure, but after the Sephora relaunch they seem to be getting some better reviews.

My mom was talked into doing Mary Kay& a jewelry line I forget what it was called, but it was before she remarried, and I just remember her always being so stressed about nobody buying at the parties, and I used up all her Mary Kay samples for certain products so that definitely didn't help im sure. But I remember hearing her yelling and crying, talking to her friends about how stressed she was and how it was impossible to actually make any money. So I don't do MLMs, even Sol DE Janeiro I don't support anymore because they were sold to a company that runs MLMs. I just cant get behind anything that is MLM related. It's honestly gross what people will say to me and promise me (they make SO MANY medical claims and promises) just to try and get me to sign up for their MLM. Well the owners that sold should know that beforehand, and they're still CEO. So if it does change, the blame isn't on P&G. @@TheNinjaNiky The issue is that they're still beholden to P&G, so we really wouldn't know if P&G is to blame or not. But there is a trend of brands doing this when bought by these mega corporations, clearly they play some part. CEOs can be replaced and usually post-sale, consumers do not care enough to keep up with who the CEO of the brand is. So if P&G says they want to see higher profit margins, the CEO have to do what's necessary to make that happen or risk being replaced - be it raising the price, changing the formula, making it appeal to a broader audience etc. In all honesty, I think they remained C-suite because it looks better for the sale. In 1-2 years I'm almost certain the CEO will change.

    I'm a Nurse, most of us still wear a mask every day. Our faces have changed forever. We have full on jam sessions and meet at spas, because our faces have changes so much. Many of us even react with redness and irritation. I have pretty good skin, but it has changed. The real N95 that we are fitted with requires a very tight fit. The masks we wear squish our faces and increas wrinkling around the eyes, and around the lip creases and make jaw jewels very pronounced. Moisture is also increased. The other softer masks we all wear become very irritating after a 12 hr shift. I wish I could attach a picture. So one of the protections is not just face cream but actually wearing prime/ foundation and setting spray. I wear foundation more for work than when I don't work. We also sweat under the mask. Soo increasing the problem. My skin care and makeup fame has permanently changed.

There are some products that just won’t work or aren’t useful for me, like products to help stretch type 4 coils, products for extremely thick hair, etc… but a lot of it works for me and I’m allowed to use it and recommend it to others even though I’m not black.
    I watch Naptural85 and star puppy and other black natural hair care channels and have gotten such great information from them, even though something is made primarily for one audience, doesn’t mean others can’t appreciate it as well.
    I’d rather some tiktoker with straight blonde hair recommend a product and temporarily cause inconvenience than for that product to be discontinued like so many of my past loved products have 🤷🏻‍♀️

      I hope it doesn't. I personally I don't think it would be very intelligent because by adding a brand like this to your porfolio, you now can sell to custumers with more curly hair (independently of their race). And those are going to be really good costumers because people with curly hair usually need more products and more amount of those products to take care and style their hair. Changing the formula, so it doesn't work for those people anymore, defeats the purpose of getting the brand in the first place. Just save your money and don't make the investment.
      Unfortunatelly, we all know that companies make a lot of decisions that aren't intelligent.

I used their hand salve a couple of times on the floor (I’m a dialysis RN and boy, do my hands get super dry) and it was just too expensive to keep using because I go through lotion like oxygen. I’m glad that they’re thinking about us, but tbh, I’m just going to keep using my vaseline intensive cream, body balm, and dollar tree diabetic foot cream for hand moisture.😅 That said-a scrub sounds interesting, but I don’t understand how it is targetted to or good particularly for nurses (as opposed to being generally good for everyone, regardless of profession)…maybe some other nurses can explain? I like chemical exfoliants, personally. I guess it would be a nice option and it’s simply being marketted to us?

    Ok so as a white person can someone please explain to me the issue with the mielle hair oil because with all due respect there is one thing I cannot understand. I get that the brand is developed and marketed to people of color, but if a white person uses the brand and discovers that it works for them as well isn’t that a good thing? I totally understand that the white influencer drove up sales which meant actual people of color couldn’t get their hands on it and that isn’t fair, but it means the brand is selling more products and gaining more notice among the public when they see endorsements like that. Doesn’t the brand WANT to grow and expand and have more customers? I can think of much worse situations for a brand to be in than to be selling out of their products (like not selling out and then having a bunch of unsold products you have to write off when they expire). I just feel like there is something I am not understanding about it🤷🏻‍♂️

      As a black woman with natural hair- I will try to explain as simply as possible.
      Back in the day, there weren’t a lot of products formulated for black hair, no matter if it was chemically relaxed or natural. It’s only relatively recently that there are a wider range of hair products available in stores- and that pales in comparison to what people with straight hair have.
      However, I and other folks have noticed a pattern with natural hair brands when they sell to a huge corporation, as well as when non POC use their products intensely. Entire lines are either reformulated to “cater to a large selection of textures” which would be fine… if they weren’t reformulated to the points where they don’t work for the people who’s hair supported them to begin with.
      Black people have had to carve out our own spaces, products etc for decades, so it can be frustrating to some when what few options we have change to placate to a group of people who have such a wide array of options to begin with and not to their original audience
      Sorry if it sounds rambly, I’m a mess when I write half asleep 😴

    So... I am a Hispanic woman with similar hair texture and curl patterns to black people, but it does look like Hispanic hair and is not as prone to breakage. That being said, I only exclusively buy products that are promoted to black people. The reason being that it provides shine and moisture to my hair, as most main stream products are meant to dry your sculp and remove oils. My hair and scalp are extremely dry, so I can't use products that are meant for people with more similar "looking" hair than me. This products that are marketed for people that have similar looking hair; will dry out my hair and my scalp to the point that my hair looks dry and lifeless, it will dry to the point that it can start falling off and my scalp will dry out so much it starts to itch.
    Additionally, and most importantly to me, is that most hair products that are targeted to people who look like me weight down my hair and makes it impossible for my curls to form. My curl pattern is 3A so my curls are quite temperamental, I need to use products that will help them show not put them down. I absolutely, love my hair and I want to be able to make it look its best. I feel like the real issue here is where you buy your products from. I personally prefer to buy my products at Ulta, Target or directly from the brand website; where you know prices are fixed. What is most important is that you know your own hair and what works for you. Have conversations with your stylist and try to find brands that have similar values as you and make purchasing decisions based on that.
    As consumers we have the power, they won't sale what we don't buy. If a brand changing ownership no longer aligns with your values, then it is time to find other brands that do. There are many indi and black own brands available. Buy what you are comfortable with.

I'm excited to see what all the products will be and what I'll get! not too sure if I'll keep GBX afterwards tho. none of the previous creators spoke to me like Bailey does!

    Body Shop at home? Never heard of anyone doing this in the UK... which is a good thing IMHO. MLMs exploit people and, as you said, these are nearly always women. Seems to go against the founder's beliefs. Has some pretty good products. The Hemp hand cream is very good for eczema and dry skin.

    I’m a store manager at sally beauty supply. This product flew off the shelves as soon as that video went up and we now are being told that we don’t know when we will get more

    You should bust into the bottle and see if there is actually any pigment in the product! Also, I places a morphe order of 6 brushes, some on sale, and they refunded me my purchase because they couldn't fill it. 🤷‍♀️

    I will say during esti school , for makeup I would only use rems eyeshadow pallete . The brown one. But it worked for everyone and the shades in it blended perfectly

    I remember when Baily filmed her video at the Ipsy studio. She previously had a palette collab with Estate called Venice Fling. It was also avail through your Ipsy subscription. I was nice warm-toned fall palette.

    Ooo if you can smell the gummy bear body wash in store, do it! It's my favorite. It also comes in a shampoo and conditioner.

    Hi Jen, Hourglass previously released that shade in their Confessions Ultra Slim lipsticks. It’s a vegan red that is supposed to be an exact colour match for carmine. Hope that makes sense 😊

    It's a shame about Hyram and Addison Rae's brands, but I get it. I was hating on Item Beauty at first, because it seemed like an Ipsy cash grab. But I really liked the quality of the stuff I tried. I grabbed three of the blushes from Sephora at Kohl's because that's the only place near me that still has them in stock. I never tried Hyram's brand because most of it isn't for my skin type, but my personal issue with his brand was that I couldn't trust him as an independent voice for what made quality skincare once he had skin in the game.

    I never had issues with the body shop since on Europe mainland they don't have any MLM structures in place... So people online hated on me for using it when there is no MLM present XD
