    I am torn about cash envelopes. I LOVE the feel of counting bills out, the clarity of how much I am spending, and being able to see the money going back into savings. I HATE having to figure out how to hold onto money for costs that don't follow set schedules, having to juggle multiple envelopes on shopping trips, and in general having large amounts of cash on me or in my house. Therefore I do all of my financial planning in a spreadsheet and when I go shopping I take out just the cash I need for that trip based on my budget and shopping list(s). Extras go into an emergency cash envelope. The tragedy is that the sound and feel of paper money trigger something in us that lets us know it's a precious commodity in a way that a card or spreadsheet never will.

      I’m with you on the “not having large sums of money on me or in my home.” For this reason, I bought prop money from Amazon to use as a visual stimulant and digital envelopes within my bank app. Having too much on me at any one point makes me nervous. Lol😅

    • @1960tlm
      @1960tlm Рік тому +22

      I am with you about having large amounts of cash on me or in the house. I use a system where I place some money on a debit card (this card has no fees & is not attached to my checking account or bank) so that when I am out shopping I don't have to carry a lot of cash, or when I want to shop on Amazon I don't have to use my bank or credit card. This keeps me on budget with my envelopes. I budget the same exact way, but keep some "envelope" items on the debit card such as gas, groceries & clothing. For example, If I have $1000 on the debit card & I've allocated $150 for gas I don't cheat. I stay within the limits that I used for my budget. $150 for gas, $300 for groceries etc. It's an extra step to load the card and takes discipline to stay on track, but this has saved me thousands because I'm not using my bank or credit card and I only have access to what has been loaded on the debit card. I don't overspend.
      It works extremely well.

      I’m on SS/DI and it takes my whole paycheck practically to satisfy my monthly fixed expenses! I divide weekly spending money from any extra income I earn from sells, baby or house/dog sitting, garage sales, etc. I’m still able to use the cash envelope system while still using auto pay or money orders for rent.

    Very good video. I'm in a no-spend year so I don't buy anything for cash stuffing. I've been using what I have instead for decades. I moved away from home in 1973, bought a package of envelopes and set up my budget. I still use paper envelopes for some parts of budgeting. I used to use the small accordion plastic files for coupons. I don't use many paper coupons anymore, so I started using those as category dividers for cash. I use the plastic files for current spending and paper envelopes to roll unused money into. Works well for me. I'd love to have pretty binders and beautiful envelopes... things to make them beautiful, but I live on a small fixed income. I WANT fancy, but I don't need it. I need money in the bank more than pretty binders. That's me in my situation. Others choose to go with beautiful, and if that's what they want and can afford, more power to them!😊
    I'm just really glad to hear you talking about frugal ways to cash stuff and budget. Go YOU!!!

    I’ve been budgeting for the past 7 years. My method is pretty simple. When I first started. I add up all the bills/categories for the month. Let say it comes up to be $3000 a month. I just take out $3k to cover that month of expenses to start. From that point on, I put away $1500 from a biweekly paycheck for next month bills. What ever left of that paycheck can go to savings or sinking funds. This method works beautifully.

    This was a great video for you to do, especially as most of your followers are from the planner community. This is a way to reach people that would not be thinking about cash stuffing but perhaps are struggling a bit with their budgets. I am passionate about trying to reach people who need help with personal finance. I use a combination of Prop Money and real money. My prop money is how I track what is in those categories as I keep all the money in one account. This is such a great visual way to see what you have to spend in each category. Stuffing the cash in many ways activates the brain just like physically writing something in your planner. Even though it may be prop money, when I stuff that into an envelope, the amount I have to spend sticks better in my head.

    The more I watch the more I think this is the most helpful beginner video I’ve watched! THANK YOU! Another question is.. what do u do when u get paid monthly? I’d rather keep track of all of this weekly to avoid confusion and too many things that can happen in a month of not cash stuffing. Any tips? :)

      Yay! So happy to hear that! If I got paid monthly I would just split my check into 4 or 5 depending on the amount of weeks in the month. And then I would take that amount and use it for the week's cash stuffing. So If I got paid $2k a month and it was a 4 week month I would have $500 each week to plan with for cash stuffing. Depending on when your bills need to be paid. you could also adjust for the week if you have more/larger amount bills to pay for. But definitely split the check into small amounts and cash stuff every week!

    Great beginner info for budgeting, Desiree! Also suggest they watch some of the big name budgeters like Donna Powered by Creativity, Budget with Mama Bear, Two Sister Bees, Lisa Grateful me and yourself, to watch them stuff their categories.

    A newbie here and your video has been SO useful! Thank u! What do you do with coins in this system? As in when u pay for something and get coins back. Huge thanks!

      When I get coins at the end of the week I usually put them in a container where I collect the change and then once it starts to get full I will take it to the bank and use that money to cash stuff with! So it's basically another form of savings

    I am doing a cash budget this month and get so anxious about giving myself only $50 for eating out. I am so use to eating out everyday for all my meals and snacks. This is so hard and scary to stick to but I am trying to.

      You can do it! And don’t be too hard on yourself if you go over…that’s why I like having that buffer envelope😅
