I had the Nvidia shield tablet back in middle school. GeForce now was still on beta so it was completely free to use. I remember having a great time streaming the Witcher 2....until it disconnected and also deleted a few hours worth of saves

I heavily considered getting one back in the day but aside from having a built in controller, it was actually a very crappy Android phone. The hardware was very outdated and the screen was poor quality among other issues. So I ended up just getting a nice Galaxy Nexus and stuck with my actual PSP for handheld gaming instead. My main reason for wanting it was for emulators but in reality, I probably wouldn't have played it that much compared to other games.
Fun fact: That wasn't even the first time Sony had tried an online gaming service named PS Now. PlayStation Broadband Navigator on the PS2 had a service called Playstation Now as well, with a different logo.

Man, there are a lot of videos out there complaining about this stuff, but they tend to go a bit psycho in their ranting. This video lays out the shady practices of the games companies without getting dragged down to their level. Good stuff
I feel digital games would be better if they were packaged with physical games. Sort of like how they do it with movies. I wouldn’t mind buying a special collectors edition if it came with a digital version along with the physical copy.
I've already gave up on two things: Home consoles and physical games. The first one is more expensive on the long term, the second no longer has the entire game on disk + needs updates + it still has lincence limitations. These days I only buy DRM-free games on PC.
Great video, if we summarise everything: Pros: + digital sales are great for small indie companies, it means more games available for players + it is very easy and convenient Cons - for some stupid reason (aka greed) digital downloads are usually more expensive than physical ones. - server support will eventually end and you will lose your access to your downloads forever, so technically you do not own the game. - downloading big games can take hours to finish depending on server speed - refunds are very hard to get (except steam) - you cannot give your games to others or resell them So, yeah, physical is still much better
@@M00nlightOfficial you can do it for now but Nintendo said it will be like this "for the foreseeable future". So, this "support" will end eventually. It is up to them.
@@M00nlightOfficial Only for the stuff you already purchased in the past when the eshops were open. You could redownload games you deleted some time after you purchased it but that's it.
The kicker for me is the "you won't have access for very long" part. I can go get a bunch of Atari carts from like 38 years ago for a dollar or less. A bunch of digital-only games barely existed for a year or two. Existed...because they were deleted from the only form they existed in. No benefit matters for a product you don't have at all, period. Like "Oh it's convenient" to have what? thin air?
For preservation to be a consideration, you first need to have something worth preserving as a physical item. The move to digital feels... actually pretty timely, in that sense.🤔
I buy everything physical on consoles, but on PC we’re kinda screwed? I have a massive Steam library and it makes me wonder if a majority of my games will be playable a decade from now? That’s the downfall of digital. Steam has AMAZING weekly sales and we’re loving it, but do we actually own the game or the license? We shouldn’t have to question if a purchase is future proof in ownership 🤷🏽♂️. It’s a double edged sword.

As a over the road driver. The main issue us and van life people have is speed. Once you outside any major city, speeds fall off a cliff. It would shock you how much of the country gets 10mpbs at best.

@HUYI1 They started offering lte unlimited through 3rd party resellers like nomad, otr mobile, and others. The problem is that you are out 75 - 150 a month for an average speed of 25 - 50 mbps. It is costly, but way better than hughesnet.

I don't buy a ton of games digitally on console, but the only place I feel comfortable doing so is Steam with how understanding they are to know what most people want. I'll always be a console nerd who may have a collection (that will need some downsizing one day), but less clutter is always welcomed!
I despise how much of an impact all this has on game preservation. Even when they started with digital games, you could by a physical copy and have the game. Now, you buy a physical copy, and you're STILL at the mercy of console makers and IP holders, because huge chunks of the games aren't ON the disc, and whatever IS on the disc is probably buggy as hell because it doesn't have the "day one patch" is is just short hand for "the stuff we should have fixed before shipping the game."

First the little booklets in game cases go. Now they sell cases without games. Before you know it, they will send you a letter or email saying "f*** you, pay me".......
As I hear you talk, you make me aware of something. Why am I buying the game when I usually have it beat within 30 days? I could be saving so much money. You want to pay $60 up front and maybe get $35 back. I rather pay $15 up front and that is it. I have never thought about that idea before. 😊

I blame Microsoft, I feel like that's the company that's pushed hard for digital gaming, and also blame them for wanting to buy out companies. Some once commented to me, saying Xbox is like a cancer and needs dying off.
@@adrnacad3434 I have leant one thing, when reading the terms and conditions of going all digital, the company a person is signing up to, have the ability to terminate that persons account at any time, with or without any notice, it tends to be worded that way. All those digital games lost forever.
Digital downloads are often critized for taking forever but strangely it takes longer for me to install a game from a PS5 disc than downloading the digital version, of course it's because of my fast internet connection but I just wanted to point it out.
Digital management is your next problem. Let say 10/15 years from now, you want to play a specific game on that console. The online store is close and that game is exclusive on a limited time frame. Ex Simpson and Xmen arcade on 360/ps3. Can you play it or purchase it? You can try it and those games have been delisted due to Rights.
@@tr1bes delisting usually doesn't affect your purchases. I have some delisted games (The Lost Child, God Wars, Demon Gaze, Fifa18) and I can redownload them with no problem. The only exception is P.T. but it was a free demo and not a purchase anyway. As long as the servers are running there shouldn't be a problem and even about that I'm not really worried. I buy games all the time and if I really lose access some day I probably don't care that much. I expect servers for a system to run at least 20 years, if not longer. I mean I can still redownload all my Wii PSP and DSi digital games even though the shops are closed for years. But I agree that it is a major disadvantage that you can't buy delisted games anymore but for that I still have my disc drive so I'm not missing out unless the game is digital only but like I said, I buy games all the time and I can live with not getting every game in the world.

Plus, the account serves to keep you in a closed ecosystem. An account requirement exists specifically to take power and control away from the customer.
Yup U basically trade ownership for convenience .
@TheLarkaanimation exactly don't really own anything.
2:39 you have enough knowledge to say this to somebody?
I do
That right I'm a virgin
I LOVE SCOTT THE WOZ!!
I had the Nvidia shield tablet back in middle school. GeForce now was still on beta so it was completely free to use. I remember having a great time streaming the Witcher 2....until it disconnected and also deleted a few hours worth of saves
My friend in middle school had a psp go and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I wanted one so bad, but my parents wouldn’t let me upgrade from my flip phone. Compared to my flip phone it was mind boggling cool
PlayStation Broadband Navigator on the PS2 had a service called Playstation Now as well, with a different logo.
ua-cam.com/video/NdoSczfTbkY/v-deo.html video in case anyone's curious.
My SO got me a series S for last Christmas. Having a switch, a pc, and ps5. The series S has been a decent addition to play games with my Xbox friends and have access to Xbox games and couch play for game pass games.
I really hope Scott wears a chef hat in 2027…
Man, there are a lot of videos out there complaining about this stuff, but they tend to go a bit psycho in their ranting. This video lays out the shady practices of the games companies without getting dragged down to their level. Good stuff
This has to be one of the best videos called "The Horrors Of Digital Gaming - Scott The Woz Compilation" ever made
I hope they remaster it at some point!
In my opinion, this is THE WORST video called "The Horrors of Digital Gaming - Scott The Woz Compilation" ever made
I love steaming and was a huge proponent of Stadia and was sad when it ended.
0:53 I remember 1 person who was really angry at everyone for shutting the idea down.
THE OLD OUTRO OH MY FUCKING GOD YEEEESSSS
I feel digital games would be better if they were packaged with physical games. Sort of like how they do it with movies. I wouldn’t mind buying a special collectors edition if it came with a digital version along with the physical copy.
This feels even more useless tbh
I've already gave up on two things: Home consoles and physical games. The first one is more expensive on the long term, the second no longer has the entire game on disk + needs updates + it still has lincence limitations.
These days I only buy DRM-free games on PC.
Great video, if we summarise everything:
Pros:
+ digital sales are great for small indie companies, it means more games available for players
+ it is very easy and convenient
Cons
- for some stupid reason (aka greed) digital downloads are usually more expensive than physical ones.
- server support will eventually end and you will lose your access to your downloads forever, so technically you do not own the game.
- downloading big games can take hours to finish depending on server speed
- refunds are very hard to get (except steam)
- you cannot give your games to others or resell them
So, yeah, physical is still much better
Actually I still have my 3DS and Wii U eshop downloads. You sure about that?
@@M00nlightOfficial you can do it for now but Nintendo said it will be like this "for the foreseeable future". So, this "support" will end eventually. It is up to them.
@@M00nlightOfficial Only for the stuff you already purchased in the past when the eshops were open. You could redownload games you deleted some time after you purchased it but that's it.
Anyone who says digital is better is lying to themselves and are begging for big corporations to take their digital stuff away.
Like "Oh it's convenient" to have what? thin air?
i genuinely love this man
For preservation to be a consideration, you first need to have something worth preserving as a physical item. The move to digital feels... actually pretty timely, in that sense.🤔
Digital goods hold no value because you can't sell them. Its nice to be able to sell games I no longer play to use that money towards a new game.
Backing up digital DRM-free PC games to local storage is kind of like owning a collection of physical games IMO
Just pirate every games
i love crime
its threw the net kills me every time lol
I buy everything physical on consoles, but on PC we’re kinda screwed? I have a massive Steam library and it makes me wonder if a majority of my games will be playable a decade from now? That’s the downfall of digital. Steam has AMAZING weekly sales and we’re loving it, but do we actually own the game or the license? We shouldn’t have to question if a purchase is future proof in ownership 🤷🏽♂️. It’s a double edged sword.
My brain is so gone that I have literally watched this and the Nintendo Wii plus ds video back to back ten times
AD right after the gunshot at 28:41was perfect
I appreciate Scott releasing this right after the Xbox leak with the all digital Series X and cloud focused next gen ideas
what?
@@Zordyn MS uploaded a bunch of confidential documents to a public FTC portal and so people could see their plans for the next 10 years, which is a new Series X with no disc drive (but same price) and planning to have next gen be about cloud powered gaming experiences.
21:30 games have been installing to the hardrives since the Xbox Era. Once the ps4 amd Xbox one came around, basically all games fully install to the hardrive before you get to play. Physical disks save no storage space on the console
why is scott so underrated
You really gotta admire the man's commitment to his bits... the guy literally took of his outlet covers just for a segment LMFAO
That digital-only physical edition of Ducktales on PS3 is a piece of videogame history.
A point in history where they didn't really know what they were doing with digital releases.

As a over the road driver. The main issue us and van life people have is speed. Once you outside any major city, speeds fall off a cliff. It would shock you how much of the country gets 10mpbs at best.
even worse than that, my connection is 15mbps at best, it's improved over the years but but not everyone has the luxury of 1GB speeds like some people have
@HUYI1 They started offering lte unlimited through 3rd party resellers like nomad, otr mobile, and others. The problem is that you are out 75 - 150 a month for an average speed of 25 - 50 mbps. It is costly, but way better than hughesnet.
@@aaronhartmann7658 are you serious? i was paying $50 a month for less than 20mbps but the speed did get better and the price has been reasonable but some people ive seen playing more close to $100 for even less than 10mbps is daylight robbery, but it happens unfortunately
The chef hat consistency never ceases to impress me
I don't buy a ton of games digitally on console, but the only place I feel comfortable doing so is Steam with how understanding they are to know what most people want.
I'll always be a console nerd who may have a collection (that will need some downsizing one day), but less clutter is always welcomed!
I am absolutely using the title "The Video Game Wikipedia Article With Legs" for myself
That intro gives me cyber awareness training vibes. If you're currently in the military or were in you know what i'm talking about.
A compilation of my favorite STW topic, yes
You need more subscribers! Love your content!
From New Location McGee to New Locationer McGee back to New Location McGee and ending with Old Location McGee. I swear, these compilations are getting wackier by the minute!
There are like 4 games I regret not keeping physical copies of but other than that, all digital is so nice.
I’m not giving up my physical media till they take it from my cold dead hands
i love scotts snippets
Very informative and I thought it was hilarious at times. Very good!
I did use Stadia
My internet is typically poor, but when my PC died i could play some games using Stadia instead. So while i waited for my new PC i got a month sub and plaued some stuff. I remember it working pretty well, but it did lag and stutter but at least i could play
I like digital only for small indie titles and triple A games physical it more practical that way
The thing is, while not exactly can be compared, PCs are already been digital only for ages now, but of course, you can play around with files and keep everything forever(not even considering all the ROMs and pirated stuff).
Another very topical compilation hahaha
How so?

13:27 not streaming is just taking a game disc throw it like a frisbee to the game disc slot and boom game is ready😶
I’m watching it all over again.
best part of this video was link to the past background music, not saying this is a bad video, it was awesome, I just love link to the past
The only digital gaming I’ll ever be interested in is roms on the real hardware.
I absolutely loved PlayStation now when I first got it and enjoy it all the way up until they got rid of it all. It was a way for me to play games in a deeper variety. Streaming was never an issue for me so I can't say it wasn't worth it.
50:30 : Go ask Dad about his Star Wars action figures that came as a certificate instead of a toy. Thanks for the videos!!!
I got stadia for free and couldn't get it to work. Before I knew it, the service was canceled
I watched this while streaming Starfield on GeForce Now
every medium has its benefits, however its when we are restricted to just a few for no other reason than monopolistic profit, we simply won't be part of it. There needs to be options, even if the options overwhelm....
I blame Microsoft, I feel like that's the company that's pushed hard for digital gaming, and also blame them for wanting to buy out companies.
Some once commented to me, saying Xbox is like a cancer and needs dying off.
No blame the consumers who are lazy and want instant gratification with games releasing day 1.
Well, if the future is digital streaming gaming only, and you will never own this actual game then I will just quit gaming
we say it, but will we act upon it?
@@HUYI1I emulate and pirate so I'm definitely doing that if comes to that point
@@HUYI1prob not
