Alternators are no longer dumb units, they sense how much power the car is using and vary the amount of charge they provide the BMS needs to be told when a new battery is installed otherwise it takes the previous battery as being its baseline. So if that old battery is only at 60% of original strength the alternator won't charge a new battery to its 100% strength but to what it did before. (At least that's how it was explained to me)
the system docent have sensors it uses the ABS system to monitor. you need to check the tyre pressures with a gauge then reset the light (calibrate) the system through the stalk menus. its easy as per handbook.
My BMW F30 definitely does have sensors. I had 4 new TPMS sensors fitted, one to each tyre as the TPMS light was showing, transpires the previous owner was a right cheapskate and had cheap new tyres fitted but WITHOUT TPMS sensors, literally just a rubber valve when TPMS sensors usually have metal ones which is what I had fitted. The TPMS light kept flashing and no amount of resetting the system via iDrive would fix it. Of course it made sense it wouldn't reset.... the system was trying to check tyre pressure by communicating with the sensors in each tyre - except none of the tyres had sensors in!
to reset you TPMS 1. Start engine. 2. Hold turn signal lever in the up or down position until TPMS telltale and RESET are displayed. 3. Press button at end of turn signal lever. 4. Press and hold button at end of turn signal lever until a check appears after RESET. 5. Vehicle must be driven to complete relearn.
If you are getting random error messages and suspect the battery may be on the way out, then changing the battery is job number 1. Voltage dips due to transient loads (headlamps, blower, screen heater etc) can generate spurious errors that aren't genuine faults. EGR is definitely worth a clean at least.
Zadster this happened on my 1 series, kept getting o2 sensor response slow, but I knew the battery was 12 years old, voltage read low so swapped it and no more warning lights!
It's been 12 years since I left the trade, in that time diagnostic equipment has got so much better and cheaper, certain tools seem to have got cheaper too 🤔
@truckatadders. Agree, and even more so, 3 years after your comment. Just got to be careful where you buy it !! Just spotted this.. Google > " Bavarian Dominator - Review Centre"
The MaxiPro MP808 is the best version to get as it covers all those items you have on the screen that dont work! Great tool and a must for the Home mechanic. Get Autel to send you the pro version of this unit!
James, as Kyle has noted below, I don't think you have a fault with the TPMS, just that one of the tyres is probably under inflated or someone didn't reset the system after putting air in. You can reset the system by looking at the instructions in the manual, if you don't have a manual I can photocopy the page from mine and send it to you. Regarding, the battery its just because you have Efficient Dynamics and the car charges the battery via the braking system and when you are coasting etc.. To programme the battery to the car is just to let the system know what amperage etc., the battery is. If you replace the battery with one of the same amp rating you don't need to reprogramme it.
This video has only scratched the surface of what this tool is capable of. Outstanding value for money and a superb piece of quality equipment. Although this tool comes in a few different specs and the MP808 (with bi-directional control) is worth the extra. Look forward to more videos of you using this!
On those older BMW:s the TPMS system works with ABS sensors. So there isn't pressure sensors in tires, but the TPMS system checks for speed difference between every tire. If one wheel is spinning slower than others, that tire pressure light comes on to the dash.
James have a look at LM Auto repairs videos, he’s one of the best I’ve seen on UA-cam, he shows the whole process steps on tracing the issues with control modules and CAN fault finding sometimes right down to component level.
finally a british version!! very well explained and i really appreciate the time you've spent to go through it, i've been looking at these for a while as i have left the motor trade and cannot rely on my works scanner any more and youve sealed the deal for me. Thanks again, great video
The coding for a new battery resets the charging profile for the particular battery fitted. If you don't reset it when a new battery is fitted you run the risk of overcharging the new battery (when my last battery died, the alternator was putting a phenomenal amount of current into it to try and maintain the charge). Oh, for the days when cars were simple!
I used to love BMW's, had 8 in the past 14 years and the newer they are the more problems they've had, my current 535d has been a money pit and I'm sick of it now.
For competent DIYers such as ourselves 😂 this does look like a really great scan tool. Very annoying on some modern cars that you cant just swap a battery but you need a scan tool to program the new one.....the beauty of older cars I guess. Handy for other stuff though like the brake bleed to activate the ABS module for complete bleeding. Live data looks very good too and the plain english diagnostic info. Nice video mate 👍

Just one very important point everyone should be aware of, if you take the results of your scan to the garage they will most likely insist on doing their own diagnostic scan even though the odds are itwill show precisely the same results why? because it gives them at least £45 each time they plug in, money for old rope. We have a S class Mercedes and a local specialist wanted £75 and MB wanted £100. Be aware.

Just a quick comment to say thanks for the review, was looking at a number of scanners and seeing what the MK808 could do helped me make my mind up. Only had a quick shot of it so far but reckon will be very useful addition to the toolbox.

Can you reset adaptations for the bmw with this scanner?
Great video on car scanning tool
Hi from dubai. Thanks for great information. Does it also have graphic to show short term and long term
Mahindra! That’s an Indian car make! 😅🇮🇳 Great video! Need to get one of these tools at some point. :)
I don't quite get why you bother censoring the VIN when it's visible at the bottom left of the screen anyway (e.g. 18:00) 🤔
That tool is really only good if used on old cars. That should be capable of working on at least 2018 models. Isn't that the reason why you would require one?
Nice try..., next time you do a review of any Diag tool, make sure you show that "UPDATE" button on the main screen. When it fully updates it actually has more Data "P.I.D's" .. and actuator functions available for the customer to use and experience..
I’m guessing that your BMW doesn't have a TPMS otherwise this device should do it, because I have the same as you have I have done it.
How about updating the scanner first before using it.
1 year free update
Maybe some faults could be down to a bad battery.?
