  • Recently ex Dokken guitarist George Lynch recruited singer Ray West to take over the lead vocal spot in his band The Electric Freedom. Before the first gig, George was singing praises for Ray. Then after just two shows, George promptly fired him. Why? What happened? Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe.

I remember back when Dokken was still huge,The 80s were over, Grunge was in and Dokken like many bands were forced to play smaller lessor venues. After the show I waited outside for three hours in the lot for them to get on their bus. It was a small venue so no one else was out there. When they came out I didnt want to harrass I just wanted a signature on my guitar. I know they were tired, probably tipped a few too. The only two guys that gave me the time of day was Lynch and Pilson. They talked with me a couple minutes, Signed my gear and I was a happy camper. Don and Mick just ignored me and kept walking. I mean how do you be so rude to the one person in an empty lot just asking for a quick signature? Whatever. I will always respect George and Jeff.

Don was on my plane on the way to Milwaukee for a concert with Van halen and Ratt and after we got off I ran up to him to tell him how much I loved Dokken and was a fan since highschool
I never asked for a signature and he was totally cool stopped and shot the shit with me for a few minutes
Without me asking for anything he pulled out his latest CD which hadn’t been released yet and gave me a copy
People have to remember that even before the Internet there’s a lot of folks out there getting signatures just to make money
Some musicians get pretty sick of that. I would recommend just saying hi Instead of asking for something from them you’ll get a much better response

You're making a great point about bands these days. They get paid so little and so they want to keep the expenses down as much as possible, which includes not having rehearsals, and other things that help the band perform their best. I wish there was still more money in the music business, but there's just not!

You know it's a wonder that guys like George can afford to go all the way across the country for a show, or group of shows, and still make any money after paying all the expenses (travel, band members, food, etc.). Profit margins must be getting pretty lean for some of these guys.

@@thebaldshredder Saw an interview with Bobby Blotzer from Ratt late last year. He said Ratt was getting $35k per show (He was pissed that Pearcy wanted to do solo shows for $7K instead). He could be lying or stretching it a bit but that's pretty solid revenue for a mid-tier 80s band with limited appeal. I know someone in a pretty significant 70s classic rock band (you would definitely know them) and they are making at least that per show as well. Lynch/Dokken are on at least the same level as Ratt, so you have to figure they are somewhere in the same ballpark.

I meet Jeff at the Tampa Aquarium and then we go into the Ice Palace Arena, we get to Dokken's dressing room and Jeff says to Don, "this is my friend who flew in from Chile to see us" And Don asked everyone to leave the dressing room because he wanted to talk quietly with me, we chatted, we drank some Jack Daniels with Coke, he gave me the new autographed album and we took photos together with my Chilean flag. Don treated me like royalty as did Jeff and Wild Mick!! Forever respect! PD: On another occasion I met George Lynch here in Chile on a radio show and he was also totally nice and great with me!

Ive been playing guitar 45 years. Georges playing is a cut above most players of the 80s and 90s. The problem with that is, if you dont play...it goes un-noticed. Ive played some pretty complex stuff at a club or party and nobody notices...then play Mustang Sally and the party is on....lol.

I have known George for years and I am pretty sure he went into it hoping for the best. Your point is valid and they (meaning bands) don't have the support of back in the day. Someone said Quantity vs Quality the other day and that is the truth. You should always aim for quality over quantity so maybe not so many shows so you can focus on tuning the project. No one is at fault at the end of the day life happens.

My first thought was this. As long as the set list is given a singer should be able to easily prepare with the recordings. It's often not as easy with guitars but definitely is doable. Vocals typically don't join in until after an instrumental intro in that style. It's basically karaoke but with a real band and some need for dialog.

That’s kind of true. As a singer myself, I wouldn’t put myself above anyone else in a band. However I will say that the contribution of the singer should not be underestimated and that’s the problem with a lot of these “guitar heroes”. They talk about singers having huge egos, but it always seems to me to be the guitarist with the issue. Idk what it is with guitarists, but many great guitarist seem to be obsessed with downplaying singers importance. The singers are actually rarely the ones with the ego.

There is no excuse in our modern age. If someone with a bunch of records out hires you as a singer, guitarist or whatever, you should show up knowing the songs. All of the songs are available online to listen to. You can also download and print the lyrics.
When Randy Rhoads died in the plane crash, Ozzy hired Brad Gillis last minute to fill in and Brad busted his ass to memorize the songs in order to play the shows. He was cramming in hotel rooms and while traveling. I was excited about Ray joining the band, but ya gotta pull your weight.

WRONG! when Randy died it was Bernie Torme who filled those shoes on short notice (a week) And Brad Gillis travelled with that band meaning, stood on the side of that stage and road in the back of that bus until he was ready. Ironically it was Bernie Torme who said, “you had this guy (Brad) on your radar the whole time, he’s more than capable” (Something of that nature was said) Bernie played the first shows after Randy’s death. He’s the one that had the tough way to go.

Brad told the story a few years ago here in Binghamton when Night Ranger played our local Spiediefest. He played his first show with Ozzy here in my home town of Binghamton, NY with no actual rehearsals with the band, other than soundcheck the day of his first show and Ozzy was not present for it. He was rehearsing in hotel rooms with a live cassette recording of Randy. Anyway there are demos of Oni singing that album, but as similar as their voices & styles are; Roy absolutely knocked it out of the park. Roy sings today for a band called the Fifth & recently did some reunion dates with Cold Sweat. All this to say that I never understood why Roy has never had an opportunity to sing for George as he would be absolutely phenomenal!!!
Has been my dream to see this happen for 30 years.

    • @thebaldshredder
      @thebaldshredder  2 роки тому

Yes I remember that whole story. I actually met with Marc at his apartment right after Cold Sweat broke up when he was looking for new guys to make a new band. Anyway, at the rate that George goes through singers, maybe Roy will make his way into the band at some point.

@@creeper2054 Rory was the name that the label gave him to give the name Roy more appeal. His real name is indeed Roy Otis(believe it or not) Cathey. He is from my hometown. He dropped Rory after MCA dropped Cold Sweat. He has went by Roy ever since. As far as your opinion on him being good but not great, I've seen him in his old band Gibraltar cover everything from Skid Row, to Ozzy, to Metallica, and Queensryche. He effortlessley morphed into those singers and hit every note on the albums. He even tried out for Jake E Lee's Red Dragon Cartel by sending Jake a version of Badlands "Highwire" which was awesome. I disagree with you. The greats to me are Geoff Tate, Midnight, Michael Kiske, Ray Alder, and the such. Is he as great as these singers? Probably not, but Roy is a more well rounded vocalist & could definitely sing their tunes. The man is in his 50s and still has an impressive range. He would definitely be a power vocalist for Lynch material.

George was very optimistic about the band lineup with Andrew; sounded like he thought that it was the perfect mix of bandmates and was talking about doing an EP and going from there. Fortunately for George he does have several outlets with his own stuff, guesting with Dokken, KXM, Sweet Lynch, The End Machine, and now his instrumentals. I know that those are mainly not touring opportunities but he does at least keep busy. These musicians value a feeling of stability; Robert Mason with Warrant, Andrew Freeman now with Great White, Jeff Pilson being a mainstay in Foreigner, Reb Beach with Whitesnake as well as Winger. I think the more viable roles that they can be established with the better and if conflicts arise they are going to choose the more stable and lucrative position.

Maybe it's the Name "Ray," or "Raymond" that is "Geo's" downfall, as once tight friends and bandmates, now "Luzier" and "Lynch" can't exchange the time of day with each other w/o wanting to go "all testosterone" on each other to see who solos better, "the guitar demi-god" or "the original Steel Panther percussionist prowler!" OR IS IT ALL ABOUT ONE 2020 ALBUM THAT "GEO" JUST CAN'T LET GO... "Dirty Shirley!?!?"
Point is... George has a very long and storied career in this crazy business we call "the music industry" and was on the scene in the very early start for what eventually became "Glam metal" meets "Bighair metal" as "Buck Dharma" screams out... "Kick out the jams Brothers and Sisters!!" ALL while "Curious, Confused George" trys to find his place in the "Sun...set...Strip limelight," after really never "Tooth and NAIL"...ing it down or "Hamer"...ing out a definite, absolute, fall back into the comfort zone, "genre" or at least standard style that didn't include being ALL OVER the Global map in a musical sense, sans subcultures!! Which in 2022 seems to be the thing!! YESSSS, you could not be more right about that!! The industry certainly created a monstrosity formula that worked for decades, but it was soooooo "lopp sided" with the "Fat Cats" of the Record Label(s) in the actual "drivers seat!!" Nowwww, it is good to see that having changed, but here's the thing, there is NO MIDDLE GROUND... we went from one extreme to another!! Bands got their "creative freedoms" and all 💯 % of it at that!! They also inherited all the downsides that "A & R," "Promotional," "Accounting" and every other "mundane task" the label(s) did to keep "feeding the machine," while having the name of every major touring act "on the lips" of the money spending public...!! But now that is all gone!! Enter in, "the dragon," the part or "STIGMA" that ALL PARENTS from the late 1940's right up through too... well today I guess... is the "TITLE" given to "those musician types," and that is "lazy," "unmotivated Slackers!!"
OF COURSE NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!! Right... "RUSH," "DREAM THEATER," "STYX," "LYNYRD SKYNYRD," "EUGENE ORMANDY" "TRANS-SIBERIAN-ORCHESTRA"
Just to name a few, far, very far from lazy-unmotivated-slackers!
But now, the individual machine has gotten smaller, though, no less complicated to keep a touring act on the road!! And of course as our ESTEEMED CHANNEL HOST has mentioned, "the money," everyone wants to be paid, and for everything they do!! SAD REALLY... because there was a time, when we were all young, unknown, motivated and unpretentious... All while saying this phrase at least once...( probably a shit-ton more times than that though.............. )
"Boy, I would do this for nothing, or next too nothing, if I COULD GET A CHANCE, just ONE chance!" What the hell ever happened to that and a little bit of common sense, planning and direction...🤔...HMMM, GEORGE, OR IS IT EASIER TO SAY PHUCK IT AND JUST FIRE AND HIRE PEOPLE UNTIL YOU'VE EXHAUSTED ALL THE RESOURCES!!! When ALL of that could have been circumvented by a simple, "GAME PLAN!!" OR IS THAT ONLY FOR "BAND AND GEAR RIDERS" ...... !??! I mean, that shit seems to be VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT!!! 🤦🏼🤨😳
ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON BROTHER ROCKER!!!!!
    PEACE !!!!!🤘🏼

Newsflash, if you're lucky enough to be hired into a pro performing band, STEP ONE: You request their latest set list. STEP TWO: You learn it like the back of your hand before walk in the door or step on stage. There is no woodshed rehearsing at the pro-level. Everyone does their homework on their own time, you step on stage and play. That's professionalism.

Step three: rehearse like professionals even if it's in George's garage..

@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle Yes, he can wait for the rehearsals in George's garage, and he can also be fired after two days (as he was). The arrangements are on the studio recordings and or the live show recordings. If he couldn't learn them and be prepared, he needs to get a day job, that's the reality at the pro level. Show up and play like a pro, or go home.

Pro-level bands still have rehearsals, hence why George Lynch is not a professional.

@@BungleJoogie68 How are they expected to rehearse when 99% of musicians live in different cities? This isn't a local bar band we are talking about. Most pro bands at the most have a quick run through or two prior to the first show. There is no woodshed rehearsing. Even at that, my original point is that musicians and singers are expected to show up prepared. In any band, rehearsals are not the time to learn lyrics, harmonies, or parts. You learn the required material on your own time. Nobody can afford the luxury of weeks of rehearsing anymore. Not unless you all live in the same town, which for any pro band is exceptionally rare. I've personally hired drummers and vocalists who have shown up for festivals and or shows in L.A. & N.Y. never having met the other band members and they performed flawlessly. That's not to say every pro band doesn't rehearse. I'm just saying, these days many bands and management teams expect people to show up and perform without rehearsal.

George could sit on the stage and play to a digital track and I'd pay to see that sht! Most every artist says "this is the best guitar/drum/bass etc. player I've ever been in a band with!" when mentioning a replacement player, especially if the split with the last player was on bad terms. kinda like a kick in the teeth.

I'd be interested to know what the set list was. I mean, if it's the old stuff, it's not like it's too obscure to be prepared for. But if it's newer material, George can't expect a new singer to jump in and plug-and-play.
