Serj Tankian is so theatrical, a great storyteller with a beautiful voice and a relevant message. It's a dichotomy that I'm all about. I really love Toxicity too.
They are an Armenian rock band from California. Great band and no one else sounds like them. They have so many amazing songs that will leave you with the same feeling this song did. I am a huge fan of them and have listened to them since 2001. Try listening Toxcity next if you like the change ups from heavy metal to amazing vocals.

Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.' This song is about the stigma against suicide. It's called "Chop Suey" because the original name of the song was "Suicide" (Shortened to "Sui" among the band members) and the record label wanted to cut (chop) the song because they didn't think it would be received well (due to the name and other things) and they refused to do it. They changed the name as kind of a malicious compliance thing. "Oh, you want us to Chop Suey? You got it, boss!"
None of that is true. Daron denied the label not liking the title. The band thought it was a lazy title, so they changed it to “chop suey”. A word used in b&w gangster movies meaning beating/k1ll1ng someone. Since it had to do with death and they had to “chop” the word “suicide”, they thought it was a wordplay. And “chop suey” was born.
And no. It’s not about suicide either. It’s about pointing and judging a deceased person when their cause of death was addiction.

System of a Down is a great band! You could say the singer Serj Tankian is a Armenian Freddie Mercury, they have many similarities in their career as artists. Also not just 2 or 3 guys in the band are Armenian, the whole band is. The song was called Suicide but they had to change it so they named it Chop Suey which is like a wordplay, suey is chopped from suicide. Something from Genius so you understand the song a little more ''The song culminates in a biblical connection to Jesus before his death on the cross, with the singer ostensibly having chosen his “self-righteous suicide” so that these ‘sinners’ would be forgiven''. This song is a masterpiece. Check out more from them, Science, Prison Song, Toxicity, Soil. They got so much great stuff.

The brothers need to check out some Allman Brothers!!! Whipping Post Live at the Fillmore East, Midnight Rider, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed with Derek Trucks on guitar. There is a version of Elizabeth Reed with Eric Clapton joining the Allmans. You can't go wrong with ANY of those tracks.. You will not be disappointed!

Had a look on Google and System of a Down is an Armenian/American heavy metal band formed in California in 1994 so they've been around for a while. I've never heard of them and although I love heavy metal, this song is a bit weird - I might like it after a few plays but I'm not sure. They're nothing like the other metal bands that I like. To be honest, George, I'm not quite sure what to say either! It was really interesting to hear and see your reaction, guys, many thanks.
They were quite huge actually. Between 1998 and 2005 they released 5 albums (multiple No 1 albums), their videos were on MTV all day. They won grammies. So even people who didn't listen to rock/metal at all knew them, and even a lot of people who didn't like metal, were interested in their music. The Chop Suey video has more than 1 billion views (which puts them on the same level as Linkin Park) and has been voted to be the 'best metal song' of the new millennium (so far). Their music is described as alternative metal. Yes, they are quite different and unique. They combine a lot of styles like hardcore, punk, thrash, progressive, psychedelic, nu metal, alternative rock and folk. Can only recommend to dive deeper, with songs like Toxicity, Aerials, BYOB, Question....😉

The meaning (stolen from a spanish comment):
When he talks about waking up, it is because his own thoughts harass him to realize that his life has no meaning (something made his life change completely to nihilism), to return to the usual routine but with the exception that he'll not return, for that has to "put on makeup" (get dressed, get ready, to go to carry out the same activity as always like his job), when he leaves the house, he leaves the keys on the table because he hints that he'll not return, referring to "I don't think you trust In me" he must say it for God, since the Christian religion is very frowned upon suicide, and that suicide is "self-righteous", it means that he'll end his pain but God will not trust him again for doing this when he becomes an angel (something similar to Satan), that's why God cries because he'll have to kill him (I don't know if literally "kill" him but I understand why not let him enter the kingdom of heaven, something similar that was done in the antiquity where the maximum penalty was to expel a citizen from their lands for committing a morally incorrect act for the time), later when he says "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit, why have you forsaken me?", those were the last words that Jesus Christ said on the cross before dying, here it is already very clear, begging God to forgive him for what he is going to do (commit suicide), that he has no other option to heal his pain, that he does not forget about it, that he has him mercy, also blaming God because he abandoned him, that's why he is as he is, sad, depressed, and because of him he has no choice but to forgive him anyway.
Another thing: when Serj whispers after each sentence it is because the voices in his head are talking to him or telling him what to do
I think everyone is a little confused the first time they listen to System of the Down, great track and it's worth checking out Toxicity but to be honest unless your a hardened SOTD fan they only really had two great songs that the average rock fan could name. Great live band just lacking in the number of hit's they produced while they where together.

The song was originally suppose to be called "Self Righteous Suicide". But their management thought it was a bad idea for a title, so System Of A Down renamed it. I believe their idea was to literally cut or chop the song title down to make their management happy......hence the title "Chop Suey".
The song is basically about how people who willingly or unwillingly cause the own deaths are perceived after they die. A strong biblical reference to Jesus Christ is at the forefront in this song. Although Jesus didn't take his own life, he willingly went to his death for what he believed. A self righteous suicide.
System Of A Down is in my opinion one of the better "newer" metal bands. Hard hitting, unique and always controversial. Very political and very anti war. They have many great songs. Many of which need to be carefully listened to to capture their hidden meanings.
