I have been in the renovation business over 25 years and I have had my share of drywall work. I think this is a very well done video that shows the average DIY'er how to tape a seam. It's funny how people who criticize others, never have any video's showing their work. If they know so much, why do they waste their time looking at DIY video's? Why don't they share their so called expertise? These videos are not intended for experienced commercial contractors!!!! They are for the DIY!!!! HELLO!

I'm not crittersizing his work or way of doing it i just said it looks good enough to me it would pass without the tape let the clay dry and do a smooth sanding then roll some paint on you'll never see a line

This is a great 3 minute video that is loaded with useful information.
There is no droning on about what happened earlier while getting coffee or time consuming BS music and intros.
It was concise and informative. Maybe you can make a video on how to make a youtube video.

Holy scrud. Very helpful! I think the thing I found the most helpful was the fact that he said the FIRST layer of mud below the tape is ~ 1/8" thick. That one piece of info I something I've wondered for years. I love the slow pace and detailed explanations. Thanks, guys!

    • @Twister051
      @Twister051 8 років тому +1

+Twister051 2 questions for you: 1) Why do you "cut" the mud like that when it sits on your trowel? Is that just habit or is there some reason? Does it keep the mud fresh/moist? Is it to keep the pile of mud neat and tidy and therefore easier to manage?2) How hard do you press the tape into the mud? If you start with ~ 1/8" layer of mud below the tape, how much mud is left BELOW the tape AFTER you embed the tape in the mud? Thanks in advance!

Some people think that for me to fix MY OWN house, on MY OWN spare time, it's required to be productive. That's some pretty damn stupid assumptions. I have a whole bunch of spare time, I can work on my house as long as I want and I don't need to be productive, I just need to get the job done.

I hope you just ignore the many asshats out there, Myron. You do an great job. I have your books, use your website and appreciate your many contributions to Fine Homebuilding. You've helped me to have the confidence to tackle (and complete) a whole house rehab with great results. I'm now finishing a large addition on our current home and am adding some custom details using drywall that would be difficult (and far more expensive) to do with wood. Well done. Keep the great info coming!!

It seems to me alot of proffesional tapers are very insecure, and when they see someone doing someone do somthing different, they assume it is no good. I am a general contractor, and if a taper showed up and looked like this guy, and was articulate, I would love to have him onsite. A lot tapers are really rough charachters in my neck of the woods. I have used a lot of different guys and this guy is good, and cares about what he does.

Shot out from Houston! Sir, you just helped me understand the simplicity of such a necessary chore that I have been apprehensive about. Here in my hold house (which I cherish) and there is always something that needs tending to...I really didn't have much of a technique in mind so seeing you using the ur tools so practically and efficiently helps a lot. I'm laughing because my 12 oz of puddy is dwarfed by that bucket and putting the spackle on the trowel is genius! left to my own devices i would have keep using my offset (kitchen/cake) spatula every time my jar was emptying. Be blessed Myron.

Yep my dad tough me how to tape and float since I was 11.. I started working full time after High School because the pay was better but I learned how to Metal Frame,Sheet rock, Tape and Float, Paint, Acoustic Ceilings, and more... Though Tape and Floating is more fun, Because you're basically a artist! you need skills to Tape and Float.. skills that you don't get in one day or one week or one month.. or a year... but it takes many many years to actually learn to perfection..

I'm renovating the garage right now. The old paper tape peeled right off because there was bubbles underneath. Looks as if the joint compound someone else used shrunk over the nail dimples and created bubbles.
I just put all pupose joint compound over the dimples and joint but no tape. Its been 3 days and its completely dry.
Should I sand and go over it like normal with the tape? Or scrape all my work off and redo it like in the vid? Thanks

definitely a master at work. Now I have a different problem, that is re-working the seams along the ceiling/wall joint on vaulted high ceilings, it's typical issue with new construction after 5 - 10 yrs when some walls settle and drywall pulls away from ceiling even just an eight of an inch, and it opens up the edge where tape was adhered to the wall, or sometimes it separates from the ceiling drywall. I guess it depends on which side was a weaker joint, I don't know. But I'd like to hear from the PROs here, how would you tackle that job, would you just get some mesh tape and just amend on top of original tape, let dry and texture, or cut the joint open with a knife and redo the entire seam from scratch, then re-texture?

@shkv40 lowes should have hot mud but i cant say because i almost never go to lowe's. Home depot has it for sure, it should be somewhere near the regular joint compound area. It comes in 18pound bags & increments of 5,20,45,90,minutes etc... It sets very fast & rarely cracks. HTH :)

You are putting the wrong side of the paper tape to the wall. Yes there is a right side and a wrong side that a lot of these so called professional tapes call them selves but they are not shower you correctly. There is a shiny side and a flat or if you hold it in the light you can see what I'm talking about. Shiny shade to wall or crease side out.

@olafbigandglad i have, its called wet and stick, fucking magic for internal taping, but i wouldnt use it on flat joins, it tends to bubble on those, not only that you would have to caulk in your joins heaps for it, as any little bits u miss turn into the most nightmarish bubbles

  • @screaminone

okay, im gonna sound like an idiot on this, but i thought the idea of using mesh on a seam is direct contact with both panels, to provide rigidity and holding strength, then tape over that to provide smooth surface on which to apply compound, and make for easier and less sanding in prep for painting. School me on this please, 'cause it appears sensless to put tape over compound. Is extra-strong compound ever applied to joined edges n then troweled off?

I finish drywall up here in canada. I do around 12000 Sq ft a week. Working for one of the most successful drywalls companies here. Honestly in 15 years of taping the best knife I've ever used for wiping tapes are the 8" plastic knifes that are $3. the 8" also you to wipe all excess and crumbs with one swipe.

  • @ModelTrainOutsider

The truth is "paper" tapes is stronger than mesh, even the mesh companies admit it. The ONLY advantage of mesh tape is that it comes in mold-resistant versions... better for wet or humid areas. Mesh can seem easier to apply to start, but sanding and layering require extra care.

Why you need tape for drywall you ask? It covers the joints and gaps in drywall sheets that are butt together. By taping you can achieve a smooth finish spread evenly over top of the gap / tape and sheet bevels.

From my experience it is waay faster and easier to use mesh on concave joints and it assures that the tape is embedded below the flat surface of the drywall. To avoid potential cracking it is better to use fast set compound which is harder when dry .
If you do choose to use paper tape then it is very important to use a knife only as wide as the tape. This ensures that the tape is pushed to the bottom of the concave surface. Then apply enough compound to fill the void and use a knife wide enough to " ride " on the flat surface of the drywall.
The reason for these concave joints is so you won't have to feather out the joint , saving a lot of time .
If you don't embed the tape below the surface of the drywall then you are defeating the usefulness of the concave joint.

The compound sprayers are less productive and suck. I ran circles around professional drywall guys when they had three of them one running the sprayer and two smoothing it out and i flew by them doing it this way except I used a hawk instead of a curved trowel. So I think compound sprayers suck.

Well to me its good enough i wouldn't put tape over it.
I've had a hell of a time redoing a few walls before that had old tape on the walls i took down a bunch of old wood paneling and the walls looked like pure shit at first specially around the window framing the walls glue all over so i sanded it flat
But soon as i started rolling some paint on the wall that old tape stuck to the roller so i stopped painting cause i seen that's what'll happen on down to the other walls so i started peeling off all the old tape and re mudded every crack on the walls
So sometimes all a person needs is a bucket of pink puddy an sandpaper or a sander

One solution, also, would be to use "hot mud" which is the powder mud that comes in different minute set times 20,45,90 etc.. get yourself some 45 minute & i think your cracks will stop. Hot mud is MUCH less likely to crack ;)

@AlizeesNewBoyfriend Dude, go to Home Depot and buy some. Don't use masking tape, seriously. Not taping your joins will, at the least, cause issues when painting. It's half assed, man, do it right.

If you people really want to learn how to finish drywall UA-cam is not the place for it. Go on site and practice it for at least one year. It's not as easy as it seems, it took me three years to learn the whole nine yards.

Seeing quality of workmanship many of so called builders produce, I turned to youtube and internet. No, i am not consider myself a genius or a pro at everything but hey... my results not worse and sometimes better than what I seen from a lot of bozos who call themselves "a pro" with three four of five years of experience. Yes I have miles to go, and a lot to learn however for most applications I do not need whole nine yards.

243kingfrank Damn!!! 2 years to learn the "hole" thing?? You must be a prodigy and a genius to become a journeyman taper and expert homebuilder in such a short time. It's a shame you didn't go to medical school.......we could have a cure for cancer in 5 years.......

its a bad idea to teach do it yourself types to use a trowel as a mud retainer. they will make a Huge mess. a cheap plastic pan is more practical.

LOL at the bazuka. Calling him a beginner and busting out tools like a bazuka. What a waste of time, I can tape a whole house by hand with the super taper in the time it takes you to do a room with that over priced drywall tool.
On a side note, unless its a small patch, dry taping is a waste of time, Lastly Curved trowels are useless. Get a real mans trowel and do it properly. jesus people.

Do you need a Drywall Taper? Do you live in the Toronto area? Don't do taping yourself. These video's show you the basic how to. But, these video's don't talk about the pro's and cons. Hire a professional.
Your walls will be smooth as glass! Quality does matter from start to finish.
