This was THE FIRST video that helped me improve the finish coat of mud on the inside joint: The difference with this video is that by putting on a finish coat on (only) one side at a time--and letting it dry (that is the important part), it (side one) was much more resistant to me inadvertently digging into it with the edge of my knife, when I put the finish coat on the other side. I ended up doing the corner faster because I did not have to repeatedly coat, sand, coat, sand to fill in the wavy corners.

Omg! I’ve been doing it like 90% right the whole time and have been suffering with the last step. I would of never thought of coating only one side than waiting for it to dry and do the other side. This tip has made my life so much easier. I have been using a corner knife to get Both sides perfect.
Yeah you might not want coat your tape on one side right away if there's a gap and it's not setup you will wrinkle the tape into it best to let dry and pinwheel your angles if you have many
Sir, you have been an absolute help. My grandfathers bathroom had a mold issue and so it was gutted. Thankfully it's about 40 sq. ft room. Fantastic video and thanks for it. I followed your advice about thinning all purpose compound with a little water and it made my bathroom renovation SOOOO much easier. As a guy who did this(hand taping )for 17 years this lad does it exactly as I did 30 years ago. The only thing I would say is that it's a lot easier with a good "worked in" set of tools. Brand new trowels and filling knives are a pain.

Okay, so that "cheat" one side at a time works amazingly well. Amazing tip! You need to do a compilation of all the things you've said that no other drywaller ever mentioned. You've helped me out so much in just a few videos!

Just found your channel new sub. Was in concrete trade 12 years and home maintenance for family and friends always hated mudding plaster !!! I have no patience, your a good teacher . I appreciate your skill !!!
Absolutely amazing job of explaining the process. No one ever showed me how to do it and I have fumbled through this for years with varying results. Thanks for an awesome video.
I think that's funny! Most people feel the same way.... I guess there's a trick to handling mud, but it's not really that hard if you relax and become friends with it. I find it relaxing. If it's just the tape that frustrates you.... maybe try the sticky mesh tape. I think it's easier, and really it's a better product. It'll never pop off, and you put it on before mud... nice and neat.
Thanks so much for all of your content. I exclusively watch Vancouver Carpenter for every question I have about drywall, it has helped so incredibly much.
I tried finishing with a corner tool. The buildup in the middle is truly annoying. Was wondering how to avoid it, but using just the mud knife seems to help. Also thank you for the tip on how thick the mud should be. No other DYI seems to mention it. I was using the mud straight from the bucket. Sweating up there while doing wall/ceiling joints. 😓
Visionist try a TapeBuddy tool for your corners and flats. It applies just the right amount of compound to the tape so helps with the speed and mess of taping. The corner trowel can tend to roll the tape around the corner. A lot if this is because of the amount of compound applied to the corner. Again, the TapeBuddy tool applies just the right amount of compound to the tape so you don't need to precoat the corner. It makes the tape lay flat and tight to the drywall. You should try one out. It works on all seams.
Thanks, I actually did this a long time ago, grew up in construction doing everything, playing in sawdust when I was 4,😁 prototype machinist now, but I love your videos, I'm remodeling, insulating, putting widows in the whole back side of my house and was looking for "reminder" of how best to do this, I've watched a bunch of your videos, I've watched others on here too but like yours the most, you're a great teacher, keep up the great work!🍻
Young man, I am 57 years old ... have been doing my own DIY projects for years, even drywall. Over the past year doing some major home repairs and you sir - "hands down" been my most valuable asset in nearly everything I've been doing. I do have question as I cannot seem to find the video again... (anyone else can please answer also) what is the name/brand of the "top coat" you recommend. Thank you for your knowledge and time!
We use blue lid/box which is called plus 3 for coating and for tapping all purpose green lid/box. All purpose (if used for coating) leaves alot of scratches when sanding it.
Hey man I'm a carpenter from Indiana we sub our drywall on new builds but usually do it in house on remodels and I have stuggled with finishing drywall these videos are insanely helpful
Thank you! I haven't taped in years and was frustrated with a bathroom reno I am doing, watching your video brought back a good deal of memory for technique! things are going better now. Great video. I wish I was as practiced as you though, you make it look too easy!
I really like the finish and the fact you dont used 3-4 steps to apply compond plus the good pro tip on laying the tape + scrape the bottom first because it most likely will have a hole r bubble than the top + con on 45 degee angle when appying the mud so it doesnt come off👍👍👍👍
nice to see a finisher with a dirtier pan than me. I'm not a drywaller by trade but I do it on small patch jobs. I found that I like the results of using a 4-in knife to put mud in the corner (after tape), feather it, then switch to a 6-in knife to smooth it out. The 6 in knife has a short square edge and rides the adjacent wall cleaning the corner and the wider blade covers the feather edge better and doesn't leave a potential squeeze-out line.
Great tutorial! I've watched it a few times now. One question, though, on longer walls, can you cut the paper tape to smaller lengths, let's say 5-6 ft, or must it be in one piece in order to avoid possible movement or settlement cracks? I can't easily find the answer with general internet searches, either. If it's cut, do you overlap tape ends on a run or simply butt them? Thanks for the vids, and the sense of humor!
I use shorter pieces of tape. My thought - if my wall is going to move enough to break tape, then whether or not there are several joins won't stop it. I butt, and do not overlap, as overlapping doubles the thickness of the tape - might not seem like much but it's still a bump and unless I sand the paper off (which makes overlapping pointless), it would be noticeable to my eye and more work than needed. JMO.
My contractor just quit, having hung the drywall with large gaps between the panels. I know it may be folly, but I’m going to study up on how to tape and apply mud, and see if I can go slowly and methodically to acceptable finishes. As long as I don’t glop the mud on there, I think I can make progress. This tutorial is very helpful, thank you very much 😀
Great instructions lead to great results I was nervous as hell to do this in the field for the first time but your instructions were perfect and I must say my coworkers were impressed with the work
I'm just in love with this guy! This has helped me so much in remodeling my home. I got tired of paying so much money for sloppy work of hired contractors! Thank you so much and keep the videos coming!
I hung my rock myself and had someone finish it. Big savings and the guys who do it day in and day out do it better in less than half the time. I find it better to let them do it in order to free up my time to do something else
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Great tips. Every wall in my house needs some sort of attention. Whoever did the drywall initially made a lot of mistakes. I can't afford to pay a pro but I think if I follow your instructions I can make the walls look better than when they were new.
This is so cool... My house was renovated approximately 13 years ago. So by now it is needing a little bit of cosmetic work on the inside. This video is giving me the confidence that I need to make very small minor repairs myself. I've been wanting to paint the master bedroom for quite some time but thought I would need to hire someone to fix these small areas. Thanks for the Video. I am now a subscriber and hope to learn more about making repairs to my home myself.
super teacher with such outstanding method and delivery , all so well explained and done step by step. Plus, saving so many people so much money. a big thanks.
I have 30 years experience taping and recently switched to Fibretape sold by Lowe's. Love the stuff. Like many guys we get used to doing things a certain way and don't want to change. This stuff is awesome and takes mud directly skipping a step of apply mud then tape. I have zero bubbling and stronger joints with it. Also switched to a banjo and love the tool. Makes the job go so much faster.
Trust me,my man been doing that for years, that's why he makes it look easy.I repair houses on weekends for extra cash and it's tough to run spackle like that evenly.Kudos to you bro.

Press on the entire upper edge with your fingers to keep it flat, if you do it right you wont have a problem.
Corner tool makes for an awsome door stopper
I wasted money on a corner tool.
It is now my “frustrated throwing apparatus”.
Ben does the best at explaining all methods of drywall techniques
You are the best dressed spackler I've ever seen.
Not sure why someone would dislike this video? Great stuff. I am a contractor looking to save money on my own basement. This really helps! Thanks!
I'm working on my house and this was great for me to see.....good job.
Best part was droping the knife. The reality of work. Well done on communicating your method. Thanks.
You Tube University. Where you can learn just about anything 😎
Yes,but nothing like on the job experience! Vids like this are a HUGE help..
You sure make this look easy! I'm fixing bad cracks and tape that lifted off an inside corner, came back here for a refresher!
Thank you,i am become a pro at this stuff! Hubby does the sheet rock i do the plastering,we are all happy.😁
YariGlows215 now that’s love 😉
Hey man I'm a carpenter from Indiana we sub our drywall on new builds but usually do it in house on remodels and I have stuggled with finishing drywall these videos are insanely helpful
Bro. He makes it look so easy. Mine was a complete disaster
I was literally just thinking the same damn thing lmao 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Well, if it makes it better... You are not alone!
🤣🤣🤣
Repairing my bedroom and I've never touched drywall before. This video was the best I found! Thank you.
5:04 drops his knife. This is typically the point at which I’m throwing mine out of frustration.
*I always thought he walked on water until he dropped the knife.* 😬
Thank you! I haven't taped in years and was frustrated with a bathroom reno I am doing, watching your video brought back a good deal of memory for technique! things are going better now. Great video. I wish I was as practiced as you though, you make it look too easy!
I really like the finish and the fact you dont used 3-4 steps to apply compond plus the good pro tip on laying the tape + scrape the bottom first because it most likely will have a hole r bubble than the top + con on 45 degee angle when appying the mud so it doesnt come off👍👍👍👍
How yu know gurl👍😍
Damnnn gurlllll
But you do need at least 3 coats of compound for a professional finish. So....
Finally, after years of struggling, you''ve made it so easy. Thank you.
what do you do if the ceiling is finished and patterned or textured? (replacing wall drywall)?
nice to see a finisher with a dirtier pan than me.
This tutorial is very helpful, thank you very much 😀
you make it seem so easy. I'm glad I found you on youtube....it makes me want to sheet my own house.
It’s actually not easy, takes a few years to get anywhere close to being professional at it
Great instructions lead to great results I was nervous as hell to do this in the field for the first time but your instructions were perfect and I must say my coworkers were impressed with the work
thanks! Always looking to improve my technique. I, too, "cheat the corners."
This guy is real .... He doesn't act all perfect .... I give him a 9 out of 10
I should have watched this video before I started. My mud was to thick for my butt joint. Great video!
just corner roller and flusher to start with
SMITH of all TRADES good teaching. A TapeBuddy tool will make this process easier and faster.
I'm just in love with this guy! This has helped me so much in remodeling my home. I got tired of paying so much money for sloppy work of hired contractors! Thank you so much and keep the videos coming!
Lot's more coming!
I learned one thing from this . let the pros handle it. I am now willing to pay your estimate!
Grasias me ayudaste mucho haciendo mi primera casa Sheetrock and finishing mil grasias por el video
De nada mi amigo
This is so cool... My house was renovated approximately 13 years ago. So by now it is needing a little bit of cosmetic work on the inside. This video is giving me the confidence that I need to make very small minor repairs myself. I've been wanting to paint the master bedroom for quite some time but thought I would need to hire someone to fix these small areas. Thanks for the Video. I am now a subscriber and hope to learn more about making repairs to my home myself.
Thanks for the info! You do a great job explaining and demo'ing--I'm off to give it a whirl.
Thanks for the video! It got to the point, was simple, easy to understand and saved me a lot of time and work.
I always struggle with this. You did in 2 min what is takes me an hour to do...
TofuInc one hour 😱 this is very simple... imagine to put from the lift 15m from the ground and long wall 40 meters 😂
super teacher with such outstanding method and delivery , all so well explained and done step by step. Plus, saving so many people so much money. a big thanks.
Vancouver Ninja Jedi, excellent share ßen!
30 years experience and you just heard about fiber tape and a banjo and you buy your materials at lowes?
Excellent videos my friend. Keep it up!
Trust me,my man been doing that for years, that's why he makes it look easy.I repair houses on weekends for extra cash and it's tough to run spackle like that evenly.Kudos to you bro.
I was like you when I first started too... keep at it - you will get better with pratice...
I can't seem to find your video, bro.

You are an artist. Such a pleasure watching you move, like an orchestra conductor with a baton.
Good job from Sweden, painter too.
Thanks Blackwater:)
Du som svensk skulle väl aldrig gör detta?
Sir, you area a scholar and a gentleman. You taught this old guy a few tips. Thank you.
You are more than welcome!
