Like a lot of tape echo lovers, I was impressed with Catalinbread’s Maestro Echoplex EP-3-inspired Belle Epoch. When whispers stirred about the Belle Epoch Deluxe (and the addition of a preamp that would approximate one of the original Maestro EP-3’s coolest features), I bet on seeing a refined Belle Epoch with a scoop of extra drive that would deliver us a step closer to the Maestro EP-3 ideal in the digital realm.
But Catalinbread is a restless and imaginative bunch of builders. And in the Belle Epoch Deluxe, they’ve gone beyond simple EP-3 simulations-opting instead to create a multi-faceted echo device that delivers multitudinous shades of preamp and tape-recorder amplifier grit, shape-shifting waves of modulation, lysergic sweepable resonant filter sounds, and echo tones that range from glinting and sun-lit to misty, moody, and mysterious.
The Belle Epoch Deluxe extracts a ton of pleasing, musical, and authentically analog sounds from various combinations of echo, filter, and modulation. The three rightmost knobs will be familiar in function, if not name. Echo delay sets delay time from 80 to 800 ms (the same range as an original EP-3). Echo sustain and echo volume control the number and level of repeats, respectively. The record level control replicates the function of the screwdriver-adjusted input gain control that appeared on the EP-3 and adds dirt or cleans up repeats, depending on the level. The depth knob controls the intensity of the various modulation functions. The echo program knob switches between the Deluxe’s six different modes and voices.
Elsewhere, the small toggle enables switching between expression pedal control of delay time (taking the place of the EP-3’s famed slider) and pedal control of echo volume, modulation speed, or filter voicing (depending on the selected echo program). The leftmost footswitch is another treat for OG EP-3 fans: a latch switch that enables you to dip in and out of runaway oscillation textures.

I love this effect. I was loaned one for a couple months, I only intended to use it for one specific song I was recording and bonded with it way more than I intended.
On a side note regarding the guitar he's using: I never understood why it is that for such an expensive guitars today are designed and built to such a high standard in regards to the materials (wood selection, hardware, etc), construction design and workmanship is such that on about 80% of their models seem that the layout of the controls, most of all the pots, all seem like an afterthought. For example the Custom 22 & 24Ps and the position of the volume for the piezo pickups. Instead of repositioning the volume and tone pots in a way that they can fit the third in the same area, they put it way back below the tremolo. It looks like someone just took a standard Custom and installed an aftermarket piezo and had to have the control put somewhere else because it doesn't fit where the other pots are.

Great review and playing! But one correction: the original Belle Epoch had an internal trimpot for preamp gain, but this version doesn't. The trimpot is to set the intensity of the oscillation footswitch.

I honestly watch these reviews to hear bohlinger play! Love Catalinbread, sounds phenomenal like most of their stuff but my god it's pricey... Great demo

$30 more than an El Capistan and this has the exact analog circuitry of a real Echoplex incl voltage.

Great demo! But please don't touch the vibrato arm when demoing the different modes, it makes the actual modulation hard to hear

Thank you! Major pet peeve of mine. So many demos do this with modulation pedals, makes no sense.

Never seen a PRS headstock like that, cool! Also, great creative playing as usual John!

Catalinbread makes great pedals. This one does a great Echoplex imitation. I also have their Echorec, and that's fantastic as well.

The OSC switch should be soft touch, no? Why would you ever click and leave that on?

If you set the osc real low, you can use it as a sustain pedal instead of a chaos switch

That switch can be a turn off. I don’t have a exp pedal. Yet to really enjoy it.

My first thought also. I have since retrofitted an optopuss switch in to mine. 👍

It's always better to save up and get what you really want instead of settling for something else.

This things awesome, but don’t beat yourself up. Get what you can afford, your audience won’t be able to tell anyway. Then when you’ve got the clear funds trade up.

I bought one it is great. I wish I did not waste the time/money on the first one. The deluxe is so important. I have thre thing on all the time. You need a dunlop vol/expression pedal with a TRS cable. If you do not have the proper expressionpedal and TRS cable you are screwing yourself.

Great video, thanks! One request - please no whammy bar when you're demoing short chorused tones. It's hard to tell what's what.

FYI: this pedal is NOISY. It was created to be EXTREMELY authentic and they did a BANG-UP job of it - but I think it was taken TOO far. Yeah, that old vintage equipment sounds great, but back when it was popular, that excess noise wasn't exactly a DESIRABLE thing, it was just a product of the technology of the time. We have better technology now, so take advantage of it. Just know, if you buy this, expect a certain amount of self-noise. If you're playing at full blast, you can't hear it very much. But as soon as you stop, or if you have quiet passages, expect you will be able to hear it. The preamp noise inherent in the original EP was duplicated for this pedal, and if you have an OD channel, or any guitar sound that has gain, this will be AMPLIFIED. I am selling mine. If I had known what I just typed here, I wouldn't have bought it. Both THIS pedal, and the Belle Epoch BOTH have this self-noise. Just FYI.

I own the original Belle Epoch and it's not noisy at all... Only this version is noisy. I'll be sticking with my original version, this is just too much for me both cost and options
