Retiring was the best call he made in those last two years. Dario was never the same driver after Dan’s death. I was relieved when he listened to his doctor and ended his career. Glad to see him thrive with Ganassi and Indy since then. Love you, DF.

Dario is one tough guy and a hell of a person. Sucks to lose such a great driver early, but at least he is able to live a relatively normal life still.

@@Cloudminster He raced US, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Brazil during his Indycar career. Granted not the international reach of F1 at all but any racing fan that has a knowledge beyond Netflix knows Franchitti is a top tier driver.

@@goodshipkaraboudjan oh I know exactly who he is and so do average F1 fans, I’m just stating the way it is in Europe/everywhere outside CanAm regarding Indy…it’s US based and not that big of a deal. It’s similar in performance to F2 but comes way below F1 and WEC. He’s respected but as with someone like Ericsson who won the 500 and took a milk shower, in the F1 paddock these drivers are either leftovers, avoided completely or just not quite enough for F1. Only when they reach such a level outside F1 say as the king of Le Mans, Tom Kristensen are they truly lauded. Nobody really cares for the US-based only stuff if they’re outside the America…don’t even get me started with your NASCAR.

@@Cloudminster As a former racer myself, I will kindly object to your characterizations of U.S.-based racing being no better than F2. There have been plenty of drivers who have left F1 to join Indycar... and when it comes to speed, there's nothing like the Indy 500 speeds that F1 comes close to. Put an F2 car on the Indy Oval and just watch what happens. It won't be very competitive.

@@AidanMillward the one that stayed with me was broadcast on live TV as they were strapping in to do the salute laps before ending the event. The camera caught Dario trying to hold back tears before putting his helmet on and just totally breaking down. That just about caused me to burst into tears too.

My wife and I were corner Marshall's at Turn 5A that afternoon. I was a communicator, and Tina was yellow flag. It was Tina's first pro race as a Marshall.
We were about 80' from where Dario impacted the catch fence.
We ran into Dario a year or so later at the Long Beach Grand Prix and had a wonderful conversation with him about that day.
Thank God everyone came out safe.

As a race fan I always enjoy the competition on the track and was never really a fan of the wreck that the media seems so prevalent to show and promote as fan favorite times...I am sad for Dario mostly because (as you pointed out in this vid) his decision to stop was taken from him and the thrill of racing is still coursing through his veins.. I hope he can find something that will peak his interests and his thrill level to help keep him happy as he goes through his life.. and racing formula e is a dangerous solution.. But what the heck I would rather die doing something I loved then to die at a desk or on the couch thinking of all the things I could have done... But never did...

I was at this race with one of my grandsons. This crash was even worse than you can see on the video! I don’t know for certain what hit the cross over bridge, but it was hit very hard and for a few minutes we couldn’t use it till it was checked out! It was a bad day since Dario was hurt pretty bad and I had no idea that we wouldn’t see him in a race car again! To see this crash in person was terrible and my grandson was effected by how awful it was! There were people in the stands hurt and I’m certain it was traumatic for them! It sure effected me!

only two moments for three or four rollovers without full protection of the cockpit showing the driver's helmet in those times would have almost left two legendary ex-teammates united where they were, but one of them in 2011 did not deserve his late salvation to say goodbye with a convulsion dw should not have deserved it yet the last time of that design df on four occasions was hit for something more tragic without returning at maximum speed just going around without pressure remains as an excellent teacher always from the pit champion
