The famous ballad "Danny Boy", ironically, was written by a man who never set foot in Ireland. Weatherly, an English barrister who was also a prolific poet, had originally set "Danny Boy" to music he had composed. The song was not successful. When he heard the "Londonderry Air", he realized that "Danny Boy" would fit nicely to that tune. Over 100 songs have been set to "Londonderry Air", but "Danny Boy" is the most famous. Band and orchestral musicians will also recognize the tune as Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry".

Best version ever! The lady is so under-rated but like Judy Garland she gave such hope to poor people around the world during the Depression and the hard times of the 30's (her films were massively popular lest we forget). She's not only a populist hero but with that voice she walks with angels...god bless her.
One of the most underrated actresses in the history of Hollywood. She quit at the top of her game and we all lost a little something.

There is not a time one hears this song, Irish or not, when the heart is not affected and the tears well up in one's eyes. Ms Durbin is especially gifted in her rendition.

Why have we sunk so low as to have lost music like this?
This song was surely meant for a woman to sing. It is a love song directed to a young man. And this version is wonderful! I am getting tears in my eyes. And she is tearing up while she sings it! The most heartbreaking song of love I ever heard.
Deanna, for me, was the true voice for Danny Boy. The movie was awesome. Her voice was a blessing from Heaven and no-one can put the heart in your throat like she could. She will be greatly missed.
Richard, I had the same response when I first encountered Durbin - her first movie "Three Smart Girls". It was during a song I uploaded - "Someone to Care for Me". Hearing that magnificent voice coming from a 14 year old face just blew me away. The world has come a long way, technologically, in the last 70 years. But we've lost a lot, too. My Deanna Durbin videos, not to mention my uploads of Fred Astaire and Irene Dunne, all demonstrate how much talent was appreciated back then and isn't now.

Deanna Durbin is still alive and well at 87, living in France. She doesn't reply to fan mail anymore, but she still receives it. You could always send her a letter and tell her how much you enjoyed her singing.
