Good stuff man and I’m looking forward to watching you go down the Tyler rabbit hole... it’s pretty fantastic. “Feathered Indians” is great, but so is pretty much his entire catalog. Looking forward to when you getting around to Sturgill too... “Turtles All the Way Down” or “You Can Have the Crown” are pretty good starting points.
I didn't even know Tyler existed 2 weeks ago. Now I'm two tracks in and it's incredibly difficult to not listen to more. But, I'll wait to keep everything on camera. I'll be getting around to Sturgill for sure, I'll more than likely do one track of his ready for next week and then do a month of reviewing him every week like I'm doing with Tyler throughout June/July.
Tyler is from eastern Kentucky, white house road is a real road that runs through a holler in between 2 mountains. He speaks Mountain speak a lot in his songs, thats how they speak there. He doesn't dumb down his song for those of us who aren't from there. He grew up in a coal mining community. Lot of pain and sorrow in these areas.
Kinda like Sturgill's song Old King Coal says...There ain't nothing left but welfare and pills... Green energy is killing these people in many ways. Kentucky, West Virginia, all over the South.
You asked about the meaning of the title of whitehouse road, thought I might try to provide some clarity. “But I got buddies up Whitehouse Road, that keep me struttin’ when my feet hang low” Tyler is referring to an actual physical place here. You can find this road in Pike County, KY where’s he’s from. He’s simply saying when he feels either downtrodden or sober, he knows some guys on Whitehouse Road that can supply with him with what he needs. Whether it be drugs, alcohol, both or just a good time.
It's actually in Johnson county Ky... He is from Lawrence County but grew up in Paintsville. He actually worked for Sears there. The song Whitehouse road came from his time working at Sears and the time he spent with a certain co-worker
Not to be a jerk but Whitehouse road is not in Pike County it actually runs thru two counties Johnson and Lawrence it starts in Johnson county as Hammond Road and turns into Whitehouse which is where its actually in Whitehouse Ky... Which i know this as i just sold my child hood home at 650 Left Fork of Hammond Road
Hey 94Studster; as an old dog who recollects and cherishes his Whitehouse Road days, I promise you Tyler is the real deal. He beautifully documents both individual and social aspects of significant drug use. It's one of the things that makes Tyler such a monster. He paid the price and we all reap the reward.
I gotta subscribe to you. Not just because I'm a Childers fan (I went to Red Rocks in Colorado to see him last September/October, about 3000 kilometers from my home) but because your videos and insight are so well considered and articulated. I'm not gonna suggest a song because you seem to have that covered, but I hope you will keep doing what you do. It's also very interesting every time I see someone from the UK reacting to Tyler since I have always considered that Appalachian country and bluegrass music to have been derived from the English folk music. I hope you'll check out some Sturgill Simpson as well some day. He to me isn't as favorable but he's also very authentic and from the same region. In fact, I believe he produces for Childers now.
lol he sings with an Appalachian accent that's how we speak in Kentucky and he sings the way he speaks. fun fact i live right next to white house road and first time i heard it i was driving down white house road its in eastern kentucky
So I ave watched a good amount of your videos and I follow many reactors, got to say I dig it. I’m from Oklahoma at the heart of red dirt country so many of your interest fall in line with us here. Appreciate the videos!
Great video! Appreciate your reaction. White House road is an actual road in Johnson County, Ky I believe, close to Paintsville. From what I understand, it was written from the perspective of a guy he used to know and work with, maybe in the coal mines.
As a Johnson county Paintsville Kentucky native i would like to suggest a idea for a weeks long reaction videos from the artist from Country Music Highway US 23 starts in Pike County Kentucky thru Floyd Johnson Lawrence and Boyd county. You will find some greats Patty Loveless Gary Stewart Loretta Lynn Crystal Gale Chris Stapleton Rebecca Lynn Howard Ricky Skaggs Halo Brown Tyler Childers Keith Whitley Judds Billy Ray Cyrus and Tom T Hall I may have missed a couple but I am sure if you just do those artist you will have a week worth of videos and trust me it goes from Queen of Country Music to Blue Grass to 90s country to every aspect of the areas music
If you are ready to dive in to some Sunday Valley.. that was Sturgill Simpson band back a few years ago. In my opinion also his best music. I hope you dive in the Sunday Valley rabbit hole!!
The 94 Club Cody Johnson Doubt me now and Noise, Riley Green different round here and Grandpas never died, Granger Smith Holler and they were there, Upchurch Hollerboys and Radio Jam, Gone west by Gone west . Here a few songs that I personally really enjoy just super talented artists. You can’t go wrong with Brantley Gilbert, Toby Keith,Jason Aldean, Luke Combs and George Strait
Thanks for the heads up. Colter Wall Wednesdays will begin in August if you can stick around until then so I will review his songs weekly, when the time comes!
I do not know if you have ever seen it before or if you have any interest but if you'd like to see a depiction of the culture this young man is singing about the TV show "Justified" is absolutely a must watch. The song "You'll never leave harlan alive" is from the tradition of music that Tyler is coming from and Harlan is close by to where he is from. There are many versions of the song but I like this one ua-cam.com/video/o2TmyML0OWg/v-deo.html
While I definitely prefer most of his stuff stripped down like this, I do love the live version of this song he did with the band. ua-cam.com/video/WtVrDud1gZM/v-deo.html I don't think you need to do a reaction to it since you did this version, but I think you will like that other version as well.
Everything about that performance got me. From navigating to room to absorb the atmosphere, to how no sound feels over performed or over engineered. Thanks so much for sharing. Seeing him live is officially on the list for next year.

Not to mention Sturgill Simpson produces Tyler's albums

I find that way of speaking so fascinating. It seems very visual and definitely something I’d like to work into my language.
Kinda like Sturgill's song Old King Coal says...There ain't nothing left but welfare and pills...
Green energy is killing these people in many ways. Kentucky, West Virginia, all over the South.
Yep 😢❤️

I appreciate this! You’re a real one ☝️ thanks for sharing that! It does make sense for sure. I can kinda relate
No problem man, keep up the good work. And keep listening to good music. I enjoy your reaction and analysis style.

I live in Johnson Co Kentucky. White House road is an old country road that is in Johnson Co on the county line between Johnson and Lawrence Co.

Come on man. "Lawman, women or a shallow grave, same old blues just a different day..."
Tyler is a lyrical genius!
