GREAT WATCHMOJO
Led Zeppelin and Cream
The meteor one for 2029 scared me
Pink Floyd
What happened to these supergroups;
Mcbusted
+44
Beady eye
Jaded hearts club
Another grunge supergroup, *"Mad Season"* formed by Mark Lanegan and Barret Martin(Screming trees), also Layne Staley(Alice in Chains), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and John Baker Saunders (The Walkabouts).
And Class of 99
I was hoping to see them on this list as well. An AMAZING supergroup especially with Layne Staley's amazing vocals!
Great fucking album
Yeah, was a real "OOF" 🤦 by Mojo not having them on this list!!!!!
Alter Bridge needs an honorable mention.
Also, respect for Chris Cornell with multiple appearances. He's my favorite voice in rock, everything he touched was incredible. Losing him hurt.
Agreed. Myles was part of the Mayfield Four and the others were part of Creed.
Yeah, the list is honestly a joke with AB.
Gonna see AB and 7dust next month! 🤘🤘
@@calmdownbeavis7039 damn I’ve seen both before and that’s gonna be an awesome show 😁
You missed Mad Season, Layne Staley from Alice in Chains and Mike Freakin McCready from Pearl Jam and Barrett Martin and Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees and John Baker Saunders on bass. Incredible Super Group, one of my favorites!! Thank you for sharing this awesome video 😊💓🤘✌️
A lot of people don't even know Chains exist (which is a travesty). Making Mike maybe the only recognizable name in the group and I wouldn't even go that far considering the only thing a lot of people know about Mookie Blaylock is Eddie Vedder.
Yes, I used their original name
Thanks for including the Wilburys. Just a bunch of friends having fun.
That's part of why they're so good. Some of the least selfish talents in the world melding together.
Edit: Said the wrong words. Whoops.
One terrific supergroup that was missed on this list is Oysterhead, featuring Les Claypool of Primus, Trey Anastasio of Phish and Stewart Copeland of The Police. They've only done one album (The Grand Pecking Order). but have continued to get together and play for over twenty years.
100% agree this was almost the main reason to watch
pleasantly surprised to see another genius that agrees w me on the underground in many ways Phish. Sold out MSG NYC from 1995 till 12-31-2023 and going strong. Phish is so underrated in the general public consciousness
How have i never heard of this love them and claypool is my main bass inspiration
I didn’t know ohaterhead was a super group haha. I only recognized les claypools sound and have always enjoyed their music even without realizing who was playing
Good catch I forgot about that one, but was amazing band
Audioslave is one of my all-time favourite bands!! They were so good! And live they were absolutely brilliant!!
DAMN GOOD !
But I wouldn't consider them a super group because it was just Rage with a new singer. Before they came up with the name Audioslave they went on the Ozzfest tour as "Rage Against The Machine w/Chris Cornell"
@@ComaAlpha it wasn’t just Rage with a new singer at all… Rage Against The Machine was specifically left as it’s own thing. Audioslave has a different sound, mostly due to how Chris sang. They steered away from politically motivated songs, and instead just focused on their music.
It wasn’t often Audioslave played a Rage song live either… occasionally ‘sleep now in the fire’ but that’s pretty much it.
They created a very clear divide between those 2 bands to not only respect Zach and Chris as their own artists but to leave Rage in the past and create something new.
Luckily for us, Rage wasn’t left in the past. I absolutely cannot wait to see them live again!! 🤘👨🦳🤘
@@MLG85 no, you can tell the difference between the Tom written songs and the Chris written songs. Yeah, Tom took a more melodic approach to writing to accompany Chris's actual singing, but members wise it's just Rage with Chris instead of Zach.
Calling Temple of the Dog a supergroup is retconning what was essentially a bunch of unknown artists coming together to mourn the loss of a close friend.
RIP Andrew wood!! But they were a super group regardless of fame before or after the group
They rereleased everything once they were popular they were a supergroup
Presupergroup
slay queen
@@jeconi5250they still wasn’t a super group, because non of the band members was known except Chris Cornell. He was the only one who’s name was known!
1986’s Eat ‘Em Smile band with David Lee Roth, Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and Greg Bissonette was killer!
How about The Firm? Rodgers, Page, Slade, and Franklin were one of the best, and had a few hits along the way.
Thank you. I came here to say that.
Hunger Strike by Temple Of The Dog is still one of my fav songs. Definitely a classic!
Say Hello 2 Heaven is easily the best song on that album which Chris wrote for and about Andy
@@ComaAlpha I'll check it out!
To Call Cream, Traveling Wilburys and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young supergroups feels somewhat understating!
IKR!!
i was looking for someone to call out travelling Wilbury's
A fantastic, overlooked supergroup from the mid-2000s is Army of Anyone. Richard Patrick (Filter) on vocals, Dean & Rob DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots) on guitar & bass respectively, and Ray Luzier (Korn) on drums. Only one album, but it was killer!
Thank you for mentioning this group, it’s still one of my favorite albums ever. The AoA is severely underrated!
Still one of my most played albums, such great stuff.
You know you have one hell of a list when Led Zeppelin comes in at number 5.
How is Led Zeppelin considered a supegroup? Were Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in a group before they were in Led Zeppelin?
@@jesschamp6521 yes. Bonham and plant were from Band of Joy. Page was from Yardbirds. Jones was a famous record musician
@@gabrieltardelli3948 ok thx
@@jesschamp6521 I'm surprised you never realized Led Zeppelin is up there with the Beatles as far as Supergroups go, they were HUGE, and are considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time! 😎✌
Should be #1 🤦♂️
Excellent, great list!
Thanks a lot for doing this awesome work quite interesting for doing this :)!
Shout-out to Chris Cornell for being so awesome he's featured twice on this list.
Holy crap I haven't listened to Chickenfoot in so long 😭
My dad would blast Big Foot for me on car rides going places back when I was younger!
Thanks for bringing back my childhood!
This was a great collection mojo. You did a fantastic job
Forever waiting a second album from Them Crooked Vultures
Kudos to whoever made this list, because as soon as I started watching the video the first thing that I said was "if the traveling wilburys aren't number one or two, then they don't know what they're talkin about" .... So you nailed it and regardless of who is number one I'll let you slide because this was a good list
You've failed to mention The Buggles: Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn,
The Firm: Jimmy Page, Tony Franklin, and Paul Rodgers
Blue Murder: John Sykes, Tony Franklin and Carmine Appice
Glenn Tipton, John Entwhistle and Carmine Appice
Hollywood Vampires: Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Johnny Depp.
The mid 80s version of Whitesnake: David Coverdale, Adrian Vandenberg, Vivian Campbell/Steve Vai, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge
I am such a child of the 80s rock
I was lucky enough to see Velvet Revolver on their first tour--- it was DAMN GOOD !
Same. It was my first concert and an introduction like no other. Me and my buddy were like 16 and got there early enough to get GA spots on the railing, and there were a couple middle aged women with VIP “meet and greet” tickets next to us. The band ended up being hours late arriving so they never got their meet and greet, and instead the venue told them they’d refund some money and give them unlimited drinks and food from the VIP tent. In exchange for holding their spots when they left the pit, the two cougars were funneling us beer and liquor all night and we were eating free bacon wrapped shrimp instead of $10 venue hot dogs. It was friggin great.
I still stand on my fave supergroups:
Temple of the Dog
Audioslave
Velvet Revolver
mad season too
It's hard to dispute the impact and talent of Cream (and they *are* technically the OG), but I would have personally ranked Travelling Willburys as number 1 just based on the sheer talent and experience of the members. Either way, this is a very intelligent list- much more than I expected from Mojo tbh. Lots of couldas in the comments-but still a pretty good list
Wilburys are #1 in my book too, but I think because of Orbison dying after Volume 1 it hurt their success
I love the Traveling Wilburys! You can tell they just wanted to hang out, have fun, and make some music. There didn't seem to be much ego or conflict between them. From what I've heard Jeff Lynne was shocked that these high caliber musicians would want to work with him.
The amount of star power in travelling willburys is much larger than cream's but cream's output is much better, classic rock songs like "sunshine of your love" and "white room" are, with all due respect, much better than anything the willburys ever put out
@@shomershabbos6291 I think that's definitely a fair statement
@@shomershabbos6291 meh, great stuff and much more well known but I prefer the chill jam vibes of the traveling. Cream is great but aside from the overplayed classic songs I just don't find myself putting on a whole cream album too often. I jam traveling a lot. I'm kinda considering the George solo apple stuff in there too, shrug.
ELP is so underrated! Their seamless and daring blend of rock and classical was actually one of the major things that brought my late father, a classic rock devotee, and me, a classical music junky, together to bond over our shared admiration for the group.
From the Beginning is easily my favorite all time (acoustic) song!!
E,L,P was great! They got their influence from the Moody Blues, another ignored band.
Velvet Revolver was one of my favorite band.. Fall to pieces was such an underrated song
I love Slither
I like a lot of their songs, in fact, I planned on getting their logo tattooed on me
How was it underrated? It got a ton of air play.
Maybe, but if it's as good as I guess it is, it's taken me 20 years to catch on
You could tell the writing was on the wall between albums... Contraband was and still is brilliant, where as nobody really mentions Libertad. It's a shame Scott and Matt started using again, but it was already over.
Very pleased to see Beck, Bogert, and Appice. That's an incredible album.
🎶 Favorite video of the week! The best of the best! 🎸🎶
Yes, I did enjoy that video!
The Firm, The Law, Bad English, The Storm, Tinted Windows, Coverdale-Page, and the one with Neal Schonn and Sammy Hagar
them crooked vultures are actually astonishing. ridiculously good music.
The mix of Cream, Traveling Willburys and Led Zepplin makes a placement choice difficult at best but based upon longevity of the group's sound and playlist, I'd have put Cream, Led Zepplin, Traveling Willburys at 1,2,3 respectively; however, in terms of sheer legendary talent presence, Traveling Willburys was No. 1... Cool video ...KDM
Nice to see Emerson Lake and Palmer get some well-deserved recognition.
Not sure if Zeppelin is really a supergroup. Other than Page they weren't really well known when they got together.
My top 3 supergroups
Justice League
Avengers
X-Men
Lmao
Excelsior !
Mad Season everyday!
Reading the comments, it's amazing at the wide range of genres mentioned ... I agree with Gorilllaz needing to make the list but Highwaymen (#3!), Travelling Wilburys and Cream were spot on perfect.
I'm surprised A Perfect Circle ain't on this list since they're considered a supergroup with Maynard James Keenan from Tool being the lead singer of the group.
Also, happy 10th anniversary to their top 10 supergroups video!
Only band I was waiting for !!
Plus with members from Queens Of The Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails and Failure it’s hard not to stand out
Totally agree. They had members from Smashing Pumpkins as well and Josh Freese who has played drums everywhere
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young made beautiful music together. It’s a shame that they couldn’t keep together in the end. May Crosby rest in peace.
I was lucky enough to see them in an intimate setting on a rotating stage at celebrity theater in Phoenix with Crosby stills and Nash was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen
Cream deserves no less than number 1. They are what a supergroup should be.
An overlooked, and frankly underrated, supergroup from the early 2010's is Fight Or Flight. It was composed of Dan Donegan (Disturbed), Mike Wengren (Disturbed), Jeremy Jayson (Bellevue Suite), Sean Corcoran (Ra), and Dan Chandler (Evans Blue). Another good supergroup from the early '00s, that's actually still around today, is Alter Bridge. They're composed of Scott Phillips, Brian Marshall, Mark Tremonti (All Formerly of Creed), and Myles Kennedy (The Mayfield Four). One of Alter Bridge's better known songs is "Metalingus", used as the entrance theme for WWE Hall of famer Edge.
Not to mention Killer Be Killed with members if Sepultura, Mastadon, Dillinger Escape Plan and Mars Volta (though I think they have a different drummer for their second album)
The highwaymen was so good
Honorable Mention:
*Prophets of Rage
-Rage Against The Machine + Cypress Hill + Public Enemy
Mad Season should've at least been mentioned.
ABSOLUTELY!
if you can somewhat play a musical instrument, and eric clapton shows up out of nowhere and starts jamming with ya, it's another supergroup and he gets another rock&roll HOF induction. you can start banging on pots and pans randomly and call it a drumset, it still counts.
My favorite supergroup of all time is The Highwaymen. May Waylon and Johnny rest in peace and may God bless Kris and Willie.
Rainbow was an underrated super group from the 70s that was very influential on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. I mean come on, it had Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, future Ozzy Osbourne bassist Bob Daisley, former Jeff Beck drummer and future Whitesnake and Black Sabbath drummer Cozy Powell, and the legend himself Ronnie James Dio on vocals. They at least need an honorable mention.
Overall great list BUT Led Zeppelin was definitely not a supergroup. Plant and Bonham were only in Band Of Joy, a completely unknown bar band that had no albums. Jones was a successful studio musician but totally unheard of outside of the London recording scene. Page was in The Yardbirds, but he joined shortly before they broke up and well after they had already had all their hits and albums. Only hardcore Yardbirds fans would know him by name, since most of his time with them was touring and not in the studio.
The fact Eric Claptons in a good bit of these bands says a lot about his amazing career
Or, what a pain in the ass he is to work with.
Dude you are great. You should be on TV.
Another good supergroup was Electronic. Bernard Summer (New Order), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), and the Pet Shop Boys.
I was “Disappointed” Electronic weren’t on this list.
Recently we have the 3rd secret, by Krist Novoselic, with Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil! Them are great 🎶👏🏼
I'm glad I got to see Velvet Revolver in a small venue on the Libertad tour. Great show. And speaking of Duff and Matt, you forgot the Neurotic Outsiders which also featured Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols and one of the Taylor brothers from Duran Duran.
Some trivia for you: The three Taylors in Duran Duran were not related.
John, Roger, and Andy are not brothers. They just happen to have the same last name.
@@tikigirl3308 Thanks for letting me know. I'm not a Duran Duran fan so I always assumed they were brothers/cousins. Fun fact: I have the same b-day as Simon Lebon. My late wife had a huge crush on him when she was a teenager in the 1980s and shacking up with me was as close as she got.
When I started listening to them in '84 ( yes, I'm that old), I assumed they were related also. And I had a major crush on John Taylor. Truth be told, I still do. I guess men just have to deal with our crushes.
Neal Young also plays with Them Crooked Vultures occasionally.
The newly formed Japanese group The Last Rockstars should deserve a mention! Formed by 4 genius of Jrock: Yoshiki, Sugizo, Hyde and Miyavi!
The band U.K. should have been in there somewhere! It featured John Wetton and Bill Bruford of King Crimson, Eddie Jobson of Roxy Music, and jazz fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth. Frank Zappa’s drummer Terry Bozzio was also a member at one point.
If Led Zeppelin is considered a super group, then they are clearly #1. None of the bands in this list is superior to them. They outperformed, outsold, and remain incredibly relevant to this day more so than any other band here! Placing them #5 is just criminal.
Zeppelin sucked. That voice gives me a headache and makes me change the station without questioning it! The music was good, but can’t stand that horrid voice.
Agreed
💯💯💯
Come on its WatchMojo what do ya expect.
The one supergroup you forgot was TMNT.
Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael, & Mikey were awesome!
What happened with HSAS; Sammy Hagar, Neil Schon, Kenny Aaronson and Michael Shrieve? From Montrose, Santana/Journey, Foghat, Santana. This was a true supergroup.
On MTV ( when it still did music ) I saw Asia with Keith Emerson playing 40 keyboards running from one to another.
I know they haven't been around long, but 3rd Secret should've gotten a mention. Featuring members of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Void, they really keep the 90s grunge spirit going
Led Zeppelin single handedly tosses and throws all 19 of the other bands at once.
Why would anyone think Yoko Ono had a good singing voice
Ikr
perhaps for the deafs
Cuz she was banging John Lennon
I can't think of any examples of someone worse in 'mainstream pop' history
🤮she actually tried to give the Beatles musical advice! Can you imagine?! She’s horrible
Bob and Jeff are the surviving members of the Traveling Wilburys. May Roy, George and Tom rest in peace.
Emerson Lake and Palmer's song, Still, You Turn Me On, off of Brain Salad Surgery is a beautiful mélange of acoustic guitar and electric guitar with extreme distortion. Great song!
King Crimson also belongs on the list.
No Madseason?!?
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! Def Leppard and Iron Maiden were also cool.
Damn I miss Scott Weiland
Asia was my favorite on this list though I have followed many of these artists with their other groups. I was a big time fan of the Power Station headed by Robert Palmer. Great list though!
I would love to see SuperHeavy on the list...
Mick Jagger
Joss Stone
A. R. Rahman
Dave Stewart
Damian Marley :))
I have another suggestion, Top 10 best Directors of the decades.
Top ten Mandela Effect top tens.
Or
Top ten South Park top tens.
😅
A great one to watch nowadays is Black Swan - for vocals you have Robin McAuley (Survivor:McAuley Schenker Group), on guitar you have Richard Earl ‘Reb’ Beach Jr (Winger/ Whitesnake), On bass you’ve Jeff Pilson (Dokken/Lynch Mob) and percussion provided by Matt Star (Alice Cooper.
Number one should be Motorhead....Lemmy is the only member you need for a supergroup.
What about the Winery Dogs with Portnoy, Sheehan and Kotzen or Sons of Apollo ? Great super groups !
Tenacious D. Of course!
Jack Black is a god.
Isnt really a group
What about Fantomas? I know isn't mainstream at all, but i think Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, King Buzzo and Dave Lombardo, are what you can call a supergroup.
I need to hear them! Mike Patton is one of my favorite singers
@@ninamc6116 don't expect something like Faith no More or Tomahawk, Fantomas is more in the vein of Disco Volante of Mr. Bungle.
I haven't even seen the video yet, but number one better be Cream.
Update: I'm satisfied 😌
👍
Nobody else can claim this title.
I wish Mad Season had made the list. No more Honorable Mentions anymore?
I almost thought you forgot about traveling wilburies. But I'm surprised He'll Yeah wasn't on here or Class of 99
Omission..... The Texas Tornados. Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez.. You could also argue for the Vaughan Brothers.
Wow, it took some real guts to contrive this list! 🙄😎😄 Great job!
King Crimson got a lot of band members forming supergeoups.
Highwaymen number 7?
Traveling Wilburys only 2nd?
Reality is breaking.
not sure Led Zeppelin is a super...but if they are then they definitely belong at the top of the list.
Yep...they're my number one on any list. Number 5 doesn't cut it. But I digress since I'm somewhat of a metal head. Either way this list has most of the greats 👍
The Highwomen absolutely belongs on this list. And Led Zeppelin as a Supergroup? Paige and Jones, sure. But Band of Joy? Nope.
I believe Brian Setzer of Stray Cats was in Honey Drippers for a min
SIXX: A.M. is also a supergroup founded by Nikki Sixx, DJ Ashba and James Michael
There is only one option for #1, so let's see if it's The Travelling Willburys.
Edit: I was very disappointed.
Electronic - the smallest supergroup there is, Bernard Sumner (New Order/Joy Division) and Johnny Marr (The Smiths).
I would have included Golden Smog on this list, but excellent video nonetheless.
In 2013 Big Country released "The Journey" with original members Bruce Watson and Mark Brzezcki, as well as Mike Peters of The Alarm and Derek Forbes of Simple Minds. Also included Watson's son Jamie.
Hmmm, I wonder if the band name Dirty Mac was another of John's pokes at Paul. One more thing, I believe that Carmine Appice pronounced his last name as "Appa see" not "A piece."
I was really hoping to see Mad Season on this list.
HRSMN - the most slept on supergroup ever!
How in the world did you list The Honeydrippers and not mention Brian Setzer??!! He's even in the middle of the band photo you used 😂
Great video. But you can really tell when they know a lot of people are going to watch. There is a set of ads every two spots in the list.
Audioslave is criminally low on this list. They put out 3 great albums. I have no idea why LZ is considered a supergroup. Great band but not a supergroup.
A supergroup that could/should have been: Art of Anarchy. Jon and Vince Votta on guitar and drums, Disturbed bassist John Moyer, and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal as co-guitarist and producer. Their first album featured Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver) on vocals.. their second album featured Scott Stapp (Creed). Unfortunately, both Scotts screwed them over, and what could have been, never was. I still listen to their 2nd album The Madness all the time.
Bad Company, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Cream, and Led Zeppelin were all great Supergroups! The rest, except for the aforementioned groups, and a few others should have been labeled the top unknown Supergroups as I had only heard of a few of them, and they weren't very successful despite the huge names attached to the bands. When I think of a Supergroup, I think Queen, The Bee Gees, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, AC DC, The Eagles, Foreigner, The Rolling Stones, Chicago, Santana, Guns & Roses, Journey, U2, Deep Purple, Kiss, Abba, Metallica, Aerosmith, and the number one selling group of all time, and my favorite just ahead of Zeppelin, The Beatles! These are just off the top of my head, and I'm aware I left out some great groups so add your own, I can't think of them all! 😁👍😎✌
It was only for charity record but the Smokin Mojo Filters have to get a name check. Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Steve Craddock and Paul McCartney.
