Today I fess up and come clean about 8 whiskies I think are overrated and not really worth it, but I'm going to keep buying them anyway. Because of their legacy, I've been collecting them, or for whatever reason, I don't love these but keep dropping the cash to get them and I don't know why.

Agreed. I'm done chasing high priced bourbon. Over my journey I've found about 10-15 bourbons I really like...all under $100 and most all of them under $60. I'm good.

...alot of choices under $60. Woodford double oak, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, mitchters around $50 range. Recently tried 4 roses small batch and single barrel $30-$40 range was pretty good, but I suspect it will be hard to get as when I went to get a new bottle was sold out near my area.
However, when I said i was going cheap, I meant bottom shelf prices. I picked up both grand old dad and Evan williams both BIB. 20 Bucks and under. I like both but prefer grand old dad BIB and that will be something that will be something always on my shelf from now on.

@@Bigdogshaving if you're a fan of LBP, I think you might be inclined to check out Makers Mark Cask Strength, 46, and 46 Cask Strength. On the non-wheated side, WT Rare Breed is ALWAYS a hit, Elijah Craig, Knob Creek 9, and 1792 are fantastic buys and thankfully all fairly easy to find.

This video raises the natural question, which you addressed the beginning: Why? It's a question I've asked myself this year. In my own experience and your channel and other whiskey tubers, there are so many other good options from smaller, local, and regional distilleries as well as store picks. I'm done hunting and certainly done over-paying. Allocations are cool, prestigious, but not that much better or in some cases worse than other options. This year, I'm committed to only buying store picks and local/regional bottles.

I’m content with my Rare Breed, JDSBBP (both the whiskey and the rye), ECBP, 1910, Pikesville, standard Buffalo Trace and Wilderness Trail. All findable and all can compete with the “allocated” tater tots.

I agree, I have 5 or 6 of the bottles you had on the table and the juice is good but with the price increases it’s hard to call it great. But we are all bourbon enthusiasts and it hard to pass the next release. The intrigue always seems to win out whether my wallet likes it or not.

I've had Midwinter Night's Dram a couple times recently at bars. It is very good, but I agree that the current price is hard to justify. It's possible that I might buy it anyway - at least the current release is reasonably available.
In general, I find Buffalo Trace products to be overrated, but this is relative to the hype, the difficulty of finding them, and the exorbitant secondary pricing. For the most part, MSRP is fair, though I think Blanton's has crept up higher than it should be. To me, Blanton's is a perfectly adequate $50 bottle. I could have picked it up for $80 not too long ago, but I left it there and got other things that I like better. I recently tried Blanton's Gold at a bar and was underwhelmed. Compared to the other things I had been drinking that day, it was boring. Currently, I only have one Buffalo Trace product in my collection - a single barrel pick of Eagle Rare 10. I don't think I will get any more unless I get lucky and stumble upon a Stagg or a Weller Antique 107 for close to MSRP, and I strongly doubt that will ever happen.
Craft whiskies can be overpriced relative to their quality, but I'll buy them anyway. Small distilleries that are distilling their own whisky often come up with unique and unusual products, and I'm always seeking out something that tastes noticeably different from everything I've had in the past. One local distillery occasionally releases an aggressive and challenging cask strength monster, another one sometimes distills beer from local breweries, and yet another produces young whiskies from unusual types of grain, including a wheat malt whisky. Spending too much on these could perhaps be seen as an investment. I want these distilleries to continue experimenting and improving their craft.

    • @billcall9063

Curious about which distillery is doing the beer distilling. Have a couple done from Boulevard brewery, and I find them interesting. I'd definitely try more.

@@billcall9063 Henebery - in Vista, California. It is a very small distillery that mostly concentrates on flavored rye for use in cocktails, but every now and then, they get their hands on a barrel of beer from a local brewery and do their work on it. These are their most interesting offerings.

In general I have a hard time shelling out more than $100 unless I've tasted it already and even the $70-80 bottles have to compete with the fact I can drink WT RB or KYS for $60 or KC9/12 for $35-60 or OF WR stuff for $45-50 and that stuff is all great and readily available. I'll entertain $150 for an 18 year scotch and maybe a couple of special bottles if found at retail, maybe even $200 but I saw MWND after Christmas for $200 at my grocery store liquor shop and just... no... no. Also just in general I'm pretty stocked up. I would have to find something really interesting to make room. MM cellar ages, OF1924 are the only two I'm even considering at over $100 currently but I'm not paying over msrp.

Heh. Great video, and I couldn’t help smiling when you talked about the prices you paid. A Midwinter Night’s Dram …
I would love to buy a bottle. Every bottle. Beautiful bottle, great marketing and I’m a sucker for Port finished Ryes.
Here in Germany, it’s nearly impossible finding it. I saw a bottle in Berlin and the price was 400 effing Euros. I can’t pay that much and I wouldn’t do it if I could.
It’s similar rare to find a bottle of Elmar T. Lee here, and if you do, you have to pay 200+ for a bottle. Stagg is about 350 Euros and also very hard to find. You can’t find Four Gate Kelvin at all and so on. Germany is a diaspora when it comes to allocated Bourbon.
But hey, you get Buffalo Trace for 20 Euros and Eagle Rare 10 for about 30 Euros. Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy both of them too much .. So I have to stick with my Wild Turkey Rare Breed for 39 Dollars (or 50 Dollars for 1 l of the non-chill filtered version which is awesome). And speaking of Wild Turkey, I was lucky enough to get 2 bottles of WT 12 year old Japan Exclusive (98 Euros per bottle) and this is really great stuff.
So keep in mind, if you get A Midwinter Night’s Dram or Stagg for 200 Dollars in the US, you’re some lucky bastards ..

Great video! Put your heart on the line and I completely empathize. The bottle chase game is getting overrated in general. Right with you with Mid winters, WHY do I keep buying it!! I also keep getting the Blood Oaths, but I do like them and they are a general crowd pleaser, but the prices I find them for are all over the place. It is funny, when the video first started I was thinking Midwinter Nights Drama and Blood Oath. I keep buying them, but I don’t think they are worth the asking price. It’s purely FOMO that keeps me buying them, but at my age, I can’t imagine I’ll be doing so much longer. I disagree with the Russells 13, as it has been very enjoyable, but only at their inflated retail price, I’d be upset if I paid secondary.
Speaking of secondary, I’ve noticed that most of the local stores (Central NJ) have been charging secondary prices. A friend referred to the allocated display as a trophy or museum case, not to be actually sold, but to be gawked at like you would a famous painting.
The one Four Gate I have is spectacular, but I really don’t care to open my wallet that much to see what the others taste like. If they manage to get a decent bottle at 80 bucks sometime, I’ll reconsider.
Lastly, I’m very happy with what Lucky Seven has been releasing, most under 100.00 and all are very tasty.

EVERYONE I've talked to who has tasted mid-winter's night dram has thought it was GREATLY over-rated.

FOMO, its real, its expensive and it's a problem like gambling. Personally I've just simplified my life with a few distilleries I love and enjoy their bourbons.

Really sad to Hear you pay such exorbitant prices for overrated bourbon. It goes to show that scotch will remain king. So much complexity and profiles vs the narrow profile of bourbon. Scotch prices have also Skyrocketed but your mainstream 10 or 12 yr Deanston/Glencadam/Bruichladdie/Bunnahabban/Arran deliver more than those "rare" bourbons

Is there a bourbon out there no matter what the cost is, he just absolutely die over it because it is so good. All you can think about is this one bourbon. Is there one out there?

I really like some of the Jack Daniels, but I have not been able to fall in love with the bonded or triple mash. The bottled and bond you can get at some airport stores is really good though and then the single barrel barrel proofs are awesome.

It kind of sounds like you have FOMO and like to get bottles for other reasons other than drinking the whiskey.

The EHT is waaaaay more embarrassing than the Blood Oath! Both pretty bad but EHT is almost laughable.
