I’m very proud to present the video for 'Nina Cried Power', directed by Jon Hozier-Byrne and Patrick Ryan.
This song was intended as a thank you note to the spirit and legacy of protest; to the artists who imbued their work with the vigour of dissent, and a reflection on the importance of that tradition in the context of the rights, and lives, we enjoy today. My hope for this video is much the same.
Ireland has undergone a socio-cultural sea change, the results of which will benefit generations to come. We are witness to a new Ireland waking to the consciousness of itself; a kinder, more inclusive nation. This video is an attempt to acknowledge just a handful of those who have fought for this new Ireland, and whose work continues to inspire me.
Thank you to Christina Noble, for showing the limitlessness of human kindness, and its ability to achieve the seemingly impossible.
Thank you to Bernadette McAliskey and Eamon McCann, who fought for the bitterly-resisted equal right to vote, and who bore witness to atrocity and would not be silenced.
Thank you to Joe Caslin, who literally coated Dublin city itself with reflections on our capacity for compassion as a people.
Thank you to Saoirse Long, whose honesty revealed not only our own failures as a people, but laid bare the true face of what barred the way of progress for women’s reproductive rights.

I'm studying African American Musical Heritage right now, and this song is shaking me, It's, stylistically, as protest song, a fight song, whose genres date all the way back to the 1600s. He calls out characters throughout history who have fought for freedom while shackled, working closely with MAVIS STAPLES, a gospel singer who worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights era. This is more than just a soulful blues song. This is a massive thank you to those who fought endlessly and diligently for what they believed in.

I am from Ireland where Hozier was raised. I am so proud of him and I am so proud of my country because there are so many very compassionate people here who have a great understanding of the pain that people suffer. This is due to our own history as our own little island has had its fair share of issues. We had a famine in the mid 1800s as our main crop, the potato began to rot. We believe that this was done on purpose to kill off the population and it worked. Instead of helping their neighbours, the British came along and stole all of the other sources of food that could have sustained our people . Meat, vegetables , grain etc and took it to England for their own people. Our ancestors suffered greatly. They were put out of their homes, burnt at home whilst they slept if they were caught helping anyone. They were beaten, imprisoned for nothing, raped and murdered. For years, we were nicknamed 'The blacks of Europe' by the British and their supporters. They seen the Irish as subhuman and treated our people accordingly. That's why so many of us stand with the oppressed and why we are not prejudiced or greedy. If we can help people in any way, most of us will.
Thankfully there have been major improvements in the last few decades. Are you from America? I hope things are going to improve over there. It's so sad to hear about and see people so divided and to witness the blatant inequalities and poor treatment of the minorities. I pray for the USA and will continue to do so.

Lately I've been following a group of buskers who sing on Grafton St. in Dublin (especially Cuan Durkin and Jakob Kooperman) and I'm totally enthralled by them. There are so many great poets and songsters who have come from Ireland over the ages. It is indeed a very special place and one that has suffered greatly -- even in recent history and now Brexit to drive a wedge. I hope to visit before I leave the Earth. I'm just getting acquainted with Hozier and also Kodaline. Blessings to you.
Not that long ago, Hozier was doing a gig in a bar in my town. The Spirit Store, Dundalk, Ireland. He had released Take Me To Church. It was plain to see he'd go on to bigger & better things. This man speaks from his own heart to everyones hearts. He is a shining example of how much our little country has progressed in recent times. We are proud of him and proud of Ireland, the country where it genuinely doesn't matter what colour, creed, gender, sexuality, age or social status you are, everyone here has a voice.

This is really the first time I fully understand: "It's not the wakin it's the risin'" Not literally waking up in the morning (which is also true lol) but he means it's easy to expose people to injustice and open their eyes, even move them to tears and rage, but very hard to actually convince them to act

This is such a good point. I, for myself, am ashamed to realise I am amongst this group of people with the microphone on.. understanding, feeling and acknowledging every sentence but still remaining silent. Undoubtably waiting for other people to stand up so I can join them. A few decades ago Tracy Chapman sang.. "Talking about the revolution sounds.. like a whisper". That is truly accurate nowadays. For while we remain silent.. others will most certainly speak on our behalf. Is this unjustice or do we bring it on ourselves? That is really a question that haunts me.. especially during these times of dichotomy within society. The world seems so big and small at the same time. I feel lost and frightened sometimes and very strong most of the time.
yeah definitely! its a play on the term 'woke' which i absolutely love because you can call yourself 'woke' but that doesn't bring change. being aware of injustices is just the first step. what's important is taking action.
I have to say, I agree with this to a certain extent only. There are some people whom could legitimately lose their jobs for joining protests and speaking out (notably, people of color themselves sadly, and other minorities). In this day and age, personally, I do not have insurance enough or backup funding to cover that. I am also extremely scared of the crazy people on the streets nowadays and simply do not feel physically okay with going to a rally or a protest due to very obvious safety concerns. When there are deep feelings involved in an issue, there are always people who will act like children and others get hurt. I am happy to stand firmly in my beliefs of equality and Justice without actively protesting it, due to valid safety and well-being concerns. THAT is the line for me. Too many news articles I’ve seen where people get fired simply for standing up for someone who is a minority. Of course, I would still stand up In any scenario. But The protesting I will not do right now. Things are just too inpredictable

"It's not the waking, it's the rising." ---I'm not Irish, but I've been learning about Ireland's history and that line got me good. Almost 500 people gave their lives fighting to win back their country, unsuccessfully, during the rising. That event had a far reaching impact and eventually most of Ireland broke free. Just goes to show, as in the song, you have to fight for change and keep fighting. 'it's not the waking, it's the rising...' it's not the awareness of a problem, it's the fight to make it right. What a song.

Of particular note are Bernadette Devlin Mc Aliskey and Eamonn Mc Cann, veterans of Civil Rights Movement in Northern Ireland in 1968. Fighting for One Person, One Vote. The violence of loyalists/unionists and RUC against these folks who had the temerity to demand equal voting rights triggered the occupation of the North by the British Army, whose failure to protect the republican/nationalist community triggered the re-emergence of the IRA. That was the start of 'The Troubles'.

"Christ cried power" when Mavis sings that line, I get chills. Not because I'm religious, but because the song makes a very deep point. Those who speak out, who cry out about the wrongs in the world, are silenced.
I'm pretty sure she sang Curtis, aka Curtis Mayfield. He wrote a lot of the songs that served as anthems during the Civil Rights movement.

I'm an exiled Venezuelan. I cried the first time I heard this song. You can probably imagine what it means to me and to millions of my brothers and sisters who’ve had to leave our country and families behind to search a life worth living somewhere else. It's indescribably painful seeing our people starving to death, children selling their little bodies in exchange for food, activists and opposition politicians rotting in a prison cell for years due to their political beliefs, our elderlies dying in queues to buy basic goods, people committing suicide because they cannot cope with the emotional distress... Many have lost their lives trying to overthrow the dictatorship that oppresses our people, many others have lost all hope, and there are some who still support the government. We need a true leader with whom we can cry POWER! As you say, "it's not the wakin' it's the risin'".

I love love love love the fact that the people in the video aren't just actors who were brought there to react. These are real people with a life full of protest and purpose. They have suffered, fought tirelessly and have had many accomplishments or maybe they have had failures. While listening to this song, it all comes up to the surface. The tears and the smiles. The pain and the love. This song/ video has given me power and thank you from bottom of my heart, to the ones involved.

GOAT we are not just protesting George Floyd. Like Hugo said, it’s about police brutality period. This is an issue I’ve seen my mom’s generation protest and walk against many times from our own neighbors dying by officers. It’s a tale as old as time for some of us. Don’t make this seem like it’s simply about George Floyd and we’re treating him like he’s our messiah.
His murder (it was murder) was completely inexcusable and unnecessary. There’s this concept I wish people would learn, just because a person committed a crime doesn’t mean they have to die. Compliant and still had the life taken out of him. His death was the last straw after decades of us calling this out.

Orlagh Gavin - i visited Ireland for the first time in 2014 and absolutely loved it! I am from Vancouver, BC Canada and it is very green here and that was one of the things i loved about Ireland! Honestly the best part was the Irish themselves - lovely!
Canada has a charter of Freedoms and Rights and we treat people fairly well, still a work in progress. Most Canadians are accepting of immigration as we all stem from immigrants unless we are first nations. Of course we still have to make many improvements for total equality!

Everyone who is here, we are fortunate to be alive in the same time as Hozier. Although there have been many such artists over the years, but there has not, nor ever will be an artist who can match the genius, the soul and the depth that Hozier puts into his songs. In a time where the quality of the music is evaluated in terms of the number of views/plays in streaming platforms and listeners getting desensitized from the lyrics of the songs, Hozier truly emerges as a dark horse. It's a shame that he is not as famous as he deserves to be. I hope that at least with the release of the full album, songs as great as 'Nina Cried Power' can get more than 1.5 million views after more than 2 weeks of release and people coming here for the first time can go and listen to his older work. And even though I am not a faithful person, but I pray to the Universe that Hozier's voice does not fade within the noise that we call 'popular music'. He truly is one of the few modern artists who has brought me back to modern music. I hope he continues to do so for many many years because I have at least 40 years of natural life left to live and it would be bland without Hozier in it.
