How does Hozier write things like "But try measure loss, measure the silence of a house, the unheard footsteps at the doorway, the unemployment of the mouth, the waking up having forgotten and remembering again the full extent of what forever is" and just expect me to go on like nothing happened afterwards
Man, I really love what the song is speaking of. From what I understand, the song is about your power to change the world is based on your ability to surrender to what you can't control, because the more you try, the more you "burn" the world around you. It's about resistance and trying to "measure" things most people think they understand (love in the first verse and grief in the second), but once truly faced with it, one can either go mad trying to make sense of it, or let it be, let it "flow" and let it change you. But as you let these feelings change you, you understand that you are part of the world you want to change and through your own evolution, you have changed the world. It is not you versus the world, but who you are and who you become 𝘪𝘴 the world you bring forth. Underneath the pretty words, there's so much humanity under them. Hozier gets it. He really does.
Youre picking up r&b because this song is directly inspired by Black Gospel Spirituals. And lots of famous r&b artists used this same cadence in their songs like Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and the Staples Singers (including Mavis lol), so it actually goes super deep. If you've ever seen the movie Ray, Ray Charles was actually heavily criticized for doing the same thing. Sentiments have changed since then, of course 😅
@@CelestialAgony829 going off of this, the instruments used are the exact same instruments you will hear in black gospel music. (Organ, tambourine, drums, electric bass and electric guitar) Blues, of which r&b derives its name, and black gospel are often referred to as two sides of the same coin, and often share a fair amount of overlap. I'd say thematically this song is more blues. Both of these styles are derived from black spirituals. It's very cool to think about the pieces of stylistic choice that have stayed in popular music over the years to the point where we can still point them out! Especially considering the history that doctor canon points out about criticism, (being called the devil's music) and oppression that has been trying to get rid of it for centuries.

I cry listening to this because I can relate to it in so many ways! Grief is so strong, the gravity pulling you down and the helplessness. But then Yes you have to let go, push yourself up and forward and when you do, you ain't sinking anymore. You learn to flow and float! It ain't easy but Time and Tide stop for none. The way I look at it is Death is peaceful, but being dead when you're still alive, that is the real tragedy!
"The waking up having forgotten and remembering again the full extent of what forever is." For their 25th anniversary, my aunt got her and her husband matching key chains with their wedding date and "25 years down, forever to go" engraved into a token. Just a few weeks before their 27th, she suddenly passed away in her sleep. What was originally a sweet gift is now keeping my uncle alive. He's lost all sense of safety, control, and purpose, but at least he knows that she fully believed that they'd be in eternity forever, and it helps him find comfort in that idea too. It's been about a month and a half. Every day's a little easier. My favorite part is when he sings "but when when *** I'd *** let go...my struggling form, my willing soul" it sounds like a yelp or cry of a wounded animal. Hozier’s tale-oriented storytelling fits the production a lot more than i thought. the story, drifting like spoken word folklore, blends perfectly with the new style. beautiful song. this EP is very nice.
I listened to Hozier’s song, “Blood Upon the Snow” - the style is compatible with this song, and it’s themes meld with “Eat Your Young.” It is like reading a book of poetry, attending an art exhibition, this growing body of work of his that forms a vastly layered picture of existence. It is an artist’s exploration & expression of how he apprehends the world. I’ve always thought that Hozier is brilliant, likely a genius, and he proves this over and over.
