I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Collecting comics is like collecting wine. You don’t open the bottle and drain it as soon as you buy it. You keep it for the right time and the right mood to optimize the experience.
Sometimes I hate how true this is😂
Very well said! I haven't thought of it like that before, but that makes me feel better for all the books I haven't read in my collection haha.
this is absolutely true
This is 100% true. Has to be the right time and place.
The whole point of graphic novels and omnibuses are for reading. These are not fine wine. They are ready to read anytime - most of these are classics.
Running a comic book channel and being this honest about the unread classics (especially your #1) required courage lol I respect the honesty!
Really cool video idea! My unread pile is definitely my larger than my read list so feel you there
Awesome video! It's always great to see that I'm not the only one who has a lot of unread books in my collection!
One thing to consider, when all these collected editions were originally released in the 1980s, we had to wait 4-5 weeks for the next issue. The pace of reading these story lines as single issues are a big part of why I think they're hailed as classics today. Watchman is very dense and I don't think has the same impact if you read it in one sitting. And there's something about the pacing of DD Born Again that's lost if you can zip through it in a couple of hours. Imagine reading that story over 6 months, which is how long it took for all the issues to be published. Anyway, never feel bad about not reading your omnis after you buy them as I've got plenty that I haven't dipped into yet. I'm saving up for retirement reading!
That's a great point that I often forget. Collected Editions weren't even a thing when a lot of these older stories were written. Maybe I'll intentionally read Watchmen over the course of a year. One issue a month. That could be a fun video series.
There were many iconic books I haven't read, but the last few years I have been knocking them off my list. When you only read like 2-4 issues per day like me you can get alot done per year.
I read Watchmen twice since the movie came out and I rarely re-read books, One of my favorite books all time, I recommend reading that soon.
I love the video concept 😂
I finished Hickman Fantastic Four back in October I believe.. was a solid read and enjoyed it. But for me I would say Invincible would be top surgestion for you to read. Its awesome series, I originally bought the compendiums but now I am upgrading to the library editions because I loved it so much. As for Death of Superman or Daredevil I haven't read those either. Main reason for not reading Daredevil is that I am waiting to get the entire Frank Miller Run 1st. Civil war is way better in the comic, after reading that the movie becomes more water down, honestly wished they will come out with Omnibus version collecting the whole event ( be definally multiple volumes). I know Omnidog started recently a stack of shame, I like to say I have more shelves of shame. I grab runs to make sure I add it to the collection, because if it goes out of print there is no chance of me getting at that inflated price.
3 of the books you mentioned (Watchmen, Daredevil: Born Again, & Dark Knight Returns) are all from the 80s and are time capsules of the era. I was a child of the 80s and Watchmen hits hard for me because I remember when the Cold War was a thing. You're much younger so I'm not sure that you'll have the same experience reading them. I do agree with another post here, suggesting reading Watchmen, and really all 3 of them, one issue at a time. But if you do that, in between issues, try looking into the events during the 80s to get some background on the stories.
Man….makes me think about my books I need to read!
My top 10 Omnis to read: starting with 1….
1. Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 1-3
2. Fantastic Four by Mark Waid
3. Daredevil by Bendis
4. Guardians of the Galaxy by Abnett
5. Batman by Loeb/ Sale
6. Batman Vol 2 by Morrison
7. All New Wolverine by Tom Taylor
8. Planetary
9. Iron Man by Dan Slott
10. Death of Captain America
I even have
Absolute Authority & Absolute Swamp Thing Vol 1&2 to read 😫😫
This made me go back and check. I have 236 unread omnis. I am 58. The maths are not on my side but hey, I’ll still buy that Colours collection if you don’t want to read it!!!!!
Great episode. I thought my backlog was bad. 😂
I totally need to be in the right head space to start something new. Finished Hickman’s FF, still need to pick up his Avengers, which is on my shelf.
….But only after I reread Claremont’s X-Men for the nth time 😁
Also, you’re absolutely a comics fan; even if you never read the so-called “canon” of GOAT.
I would read Arkham Asylum, for my recommendation. It’s up there with The Long Halloween in my favorite Batman stories 👊
the asap I think u should read is civil war jus coz I'm a Miller fan and I know I'm ganna get heat for this but I read watchmen when the movie was about to come out and ya ,I'm sure for its time it was ahead of its time but I dident get the big thing about it🤷♂️
Kicks, forgive me for adding more to your pile, but to get more Marvel in there I got 3 recs for you. Spider-Man Life Story by Chip Zdarsky, Superior Spider-Man by Dan Slott, and Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing. You probably have been recommended these before.
Life Story is a quick read and condenses 60 years worth of Spider-Man continuity into 6 issues plus an annual. It’s the best Spider-Man comic of the past 5 years.
Marvel also recently dropped omnibuses for both Superior and Immortal Hulk. Superior Spider-Man was the story that got me into comics in 2013.
As for Immortal Hulk, I couldn’t get into the Peter David run (even though I like David’s work on Spider-Man 2099). For me, Immortal is the definitive must-read Hulk run. It incorporates and pays homage to all of Hulk’s history and continuity and catches you up while recontextualizing the mythos. There’s a reason it’s critically acclaimed.
All these are on my list. And my full Immortal Hulk review is coming next week 😉
I’ve been staring at the Frank Miller Daredevil omnibus(and companion!) on my shelf for the past six or seven years… one day!
Before I finish the video (1:37 mark) I'll give my 2¢/top 10:
1. Ultimate Spider-Man vol 1-3~ Im waiting to have the complete run then binge read.
2. Iron Man by David Michelinie
3. Wolverine by Mark Millar
4. Silver Surfer by Stan Lee
5. Animal Man by Grant Morrison
6. Hawkman by Geoff Johns (read the run in singles)
7. Fantastic Four by Waid & Wieringo (same as #6)
8. House of M
9. Avengers vs X-Men
10. Batman No Man's Land (all 3)
I have like 6 Omni’s sitting on my shelf that I bought months and months ago but are still in the plastic. I never have time to read anything anymore so they just sit and look pretty😂
Yeah, we ALL have books that we'll get too, "someday"🤗
You will love Civil War, injustice & daredevil, born again all classic books 📚
I can't think of anything I haven't read yet. I probably have stuff, but I've been trying to read everything I have. So much that I even keep lists, and schedules. As for things I couldn't finish? There was this Marvel book(post Superior Spider-man) about a basketball star that thought he was all that, and he got powers to possess peoples bodies, and tried becoming a hero. It was weird. I just couldn't get pass his personality. Just felt wrong. Thankfully no one is calling that must read. Though I did knock out Showcase Presents: Green Lantern. Which had been sitting on my list for while. So I guess the #1 sitting on my list that I haven't is Vampire Hunter D manga volume 1. Reason is it's in Japanese, and I can't read Japanese yet. I've learned enough to get around in Yakuza/Like a Dragon, but that's it.
As for prose in comics, it takes some getting use to. I've even had that hang up, but I've been getting over it because it does pop up in indie comics, and in writers stuff that like to experiment like James Robinson doing Starman. It also means I need to go back and read the Moon Knight stuff from Hulk Magazine because I glossed over them. Maybe some stuff from Batman Inc. Truth though I don't like skipping over stuff when I have a choice. So it bugs me. Todays readers blocks could easily be tomorrows reading joys. So maybe someday you'll get over it.
I just read the Death and Return of Superman deluxe edition and it’s just ok. Not missing much there. I honestly can’t stand the Dark Knight Returns. I can say it is the only comic I couldn’t finish.
You should read the Watchmen though. You don’t need to read the book parts if you don’t want to spend the time on it in my opinion.
Bro read invincible its amazing
I love “ I am a FRUAD 😢 “
Man, I set the same thing I'm like. Is this part of this book? Is it just an addition to the collected version of these books? What is this? I don't feel like reading this. It takes just as long to read one of these pages of pros as it does to read a whole issue or chapter
Have you read Hush 🤫. Watchman is great 👍🏾 keep reading
Hush is amazing. its the first Trade Paperback I ever bought.
#8 will surprise you? Dang Kicks, I didn't think you were gonna clickbait like that. And man, Daredevil Yellow was the first (and last?) Traveling Pants K-Squad book! That Born Again trade looking REAL familiar ...
Gotta love a nice tongue in cheek Buzzfeed reference. And yes, I know. I’m ashamed. Lol I was supposed to read it, review it and give it away. I failed the squad.
@@comicsaredope Skip's favorite comic issue ever was Watchmen 4. Just saying
I have not read the one with the samurai bunny rabbit 🐰
shhhhh... @omnibuddy might hear you lol
I also put off reading hickman fantastic four foreverrrr, I started reading it and oh my god it was so bad….UNTIL about the last quarter of volume 1, literally e everything clicks into place and and only gets better until volume 2 ends.
I'll have to remember that.
@@comicsaredope
Can't agree that it was "so bad" at all, but it did seem to keep getting better. Imo.
If I learned anything about this great hobby it’s…. trying to read all of the great runs is like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in it. It’s not going to happen.
I read probably 70% of the comics you mentioned. But I have many more years of comic book collecting than you. But it is a shame - comic reading should be more fun than comic collecting. Especially for collecting omnibuses and graphic novels, they usually have no value other than for reading.
Injustice is a fun read - but it is an interesting book. Good for people who don’t know the characters since this is an Elsewhere series but also good for people who collect comics since there are twists to the characters.
*looks at my hundreds of comics I’ve not read yet, some of which I’ve had for nearly three years*
Nope, not surprised
Why are we like this? 😂😂
Hickman Fantastic Four
Injustice
Black Panther Priest
Astonishing X-men
Batman Paul Dini
Low
Batman Morrison
Avengers Hickman
Low is depressing…😂😂😂
I just want to know if you've read GL Mosaic?
Partially. I read the Main GL issues that lead into the series. But not the series itself. It’s on my desk though lol
@@comicsaredope Mosaic is FAR superior to the regular series. It's what made John Stewart my favorite lantern. (Too bad some creators do horrible things.)
Bruh I’m in shock of not the amount of extreme high ómnibuses comic books you’ve missed but the one that I was gonna give you a pass was Dark knights metal since I thought you read the first one first then you read the sequel. Turns out you somehow read it in verse .
I’m not gonna lie, I did the same thing when I started watching Dragonball anime as I started watching Dragon Balll Super then I watched Dragon Ball Z 😂. The roast my best friend gave was so high it’s not even funny
I’m shocked anything BATMAN-related you haven’t read ha. You already have a full bat section haha. Read INJUSTICE first bro, Have fun and escape for a while. It reads really fast.
Watchmen?!? A travesty 😂
The movie was better.
Death of Superman
Zzzzzz
Boring
It did NOT make me a Superman fan.
Superman Year One and the recent Worlds Finest made me a Superman fan.
Invincible is best comicbook run of all time for me.
I enjoyed the movie (Watchmen), but the comic....
Zzzzzzz
The Reign of Supermen was fun at the time. The Death of Superman was a gimmick just like all comic book death.
Death of Superman ain't all that.
Watchmen is SO wildly overrated. WILDLY. My opinion. Come at me if you want, don't care. OVERRATED. The movie was better.
Never finished Oblivion Song.
I bought all the issues, but there's about 8 or 9 left I haven't read.
It became impossible to determine the timeline. Kirkman did not do a good job of alerting you when time changes happened. He would say "10 years later"....but then he would jump back to 10 years earlier WITHOUT TELLING YOU!!!
Then he'd say "10 years later"...
Leaving me thinking "what, 20 years now?"
It's a shame, it was an awesome story.
I never finished AXE event. Ugh, events are consistently bad writing.
Sorry, you're going for great stuff, "must reads" that you haven't read.
I was thinking of things I have purchased but haven't read.
I finished the AXE event, but Sins of Sinister lost me.
