Documentary drama based on a true story, highlighting the difficulties faced by a young deaf woman, Sandra, whose attempts to use sign language are prevented in a time when deaf people were encouraged to lip read and speak. Unable to communicate adequately, Sandra becomes a target for abusive men.
Starring Geraldine James, Lara Crooks, Manda Naylor and Janet Sugden.
I tried explaining to someone that UA-cam is full of gold , you know it’s in there but you may never well find it if you don’t know what it looks like .
After all these years and here turns up a golden nugget
this was such a sad film to watch and painful at times. the way her life turns out when she's grown up is horrendous, i can't help but feel sorry for her and want to reach out and help. visually the film looks bleak with it's dark tone which adds to the sadness . thank you very much for uploading this masterpiece
Thank you for putting this film in YT..Geraldine James was very excellent performer as Deaf Sandra..I remembered to watch it when I was 15 as I am Deaf.. I felt emotional and misunderstood..I understand with my Deaf experience and Deaf hard and sad backgrounds..😢 but Deaf people are better and communicate Sign Languages in the future than the past.. this film was worth..
It was TV film..
I went to a primary school which had a partial hearing unit. We used to wonder why the ' deaf kids' were quite aggressive and the older ones seemed to do basic work. It wasn't until I was about 20 when one of my ex teachers, who by that time was al friend, explained that the unit wasn't teaching sign language and one of the teachers wasn't even fully qualified. That was in the eighties. These poor kids had then to go to a secondary school in Edinburgh where everyone used sign. I hope the kids got something from their experience in the PTU and have some happy memories. I'm sure the staff tried their best, but it seems to be that by not teaching sign they were really hampering those kids - it must have been frustrating and upsetting for the staff as well. I see Sandra's school did not use sign either. I wonder if this was a common policy at the time? I think it was good that the place closed down and they started sending primary age kids to the Edinburgh school, even though it was thirty miles away.
Thank you for putting this up. When it was on T.V. in November 1977, my mother (quite rightly) wouldn't let me watch it and I don't think it was repeated. So, after forty-six years, I finally get to view it. Hard-hitting stuff.
If this is what I think it is I thought it would have gone out 75 or so just shows you .
This could be it , I’ve read the description and it maybe what’s been in my head for decades, I think I had pretended to be a sleep in front of tv so not be sent to bed .
How can u remember which month it was on ?
@@Smartychase I have a good memory.
I wasnt allowed to watch the dirty bits as my mum called the. A y idea what happened to Sandra.m@GuyFawkes15
What a darling little girl. Breaks my heart to see her struggle so. What a cruel world.
I remember watching this has a kid and it's always made me think how sad for her
What a tragic story and such a challenging role to play. Geraldine James is amazing. 😢
54 minutes into the movie and what that man done to her was so brutal the bastard had no compassion for a handicapped person I hope he rots in hell .I know the stigma of some people were awful not just is the 70s as my son was born with damaged nerves in his ears after being born 10weeks premature and has had hearing aids all of his life and at times he's been called names like stupid and mental because he hadn't heard folk properly , but there's a lot of people who have compassion and take the time to listen great drama 💯👌
Absolutely marv acting from Geraldine just spotted this today saw it yesrs ago wonderful ❤❤❤
I have always regarded Geraldine James as one of this country’s finest and most versatile actresses. Dummy is gritty stuff, well-written, well observed and cast, including supporting members. The portrayal of Sandra’s degradation and tragic decline is nothing short of masterly … and moving, not least of because of it being based on a true story.
Incredibly moving drama, in 1977 I was 18 and had a death friend. She was taken advantage of by a group of men. Fortunately she got police justice and her baby was adopted.. now in her 60s she is happily married and life's good. It shows how where you live and the help you receive positive things can change a life
What a súperb performance by Geraldine.
I first saw this incredible drama in 1977 when it was broadcast and it continued to haunt me. I had forgotten about how learning to communicate became so difficult from an early age for this incredible Yorkshire girl and how she drifted into her awful street life. Ms James is extraordinary in such a demanding role. Very honestly told without the gloss that is often given to this kind of life in order to empower women.
great performance by grenadine James , i was 16 in 1977 and looking back at ole London gives me nostalgia , i am now an old woman at 62 and cant for the life of me understand how time went so fast and thankfully don't look as old as the old woman does hahah xx
It was shot in Bradford.
62 is not old!
62 is def not old.
@@WearertheRESISTENCE if you were in my body honey i feel old xx yes in 3 yrs at 65 is considered old so a few years then x
You wrote exactly how I feel, inc same age albeit different sex. I nolonger live in London so Ifind myself searching for anything to do with my early years, just to get that nostalgic feeling, even the old that old atv production logo and jingle does it for me. Sad 😂
Thank you so much for this and your other additions!

This was why so many people who were deaf or dumb, or sadly both had such a angry attitude, or many times violent. Thankfully things have changed and so have the people. Ffs in the 60s/70s you were were fucked at school even with something minor such as a built up shoe, your were labelled a ’Spastic’. My god those 60s thalidomides must of really suffered all because of medical incompetence. I worry for the next generation who may be the next mistake because of lessons not learned.
Don't I know it. I struggled in school because my father was in the navy and we moved quit a bit. I developed school phobia and ended up serving 2 terms in juvenile psychiatric units by the age of 15. Other kids bullied me and called me "mental" and "silly". That was in the 60's and I still bear the mental scars today.
This gives me lovely warm memories of being a kid sitting up late during the holidays. Please post more if you have them.
Only thing about TV drama from this era was that most of it was so bloody depressing.
A fair proportion of UK tv plays & dramas of the time were pretty dark but they refelected the times, in some cases even forcing govt to take notice (eg Ken Loach) and I'd also argue there was more light and shade than some would give them credit for, promising (and in some cases great) directors honing their craft and managing to inject some humour in among the bleak storylines, Mike leigh being another example. Also I think they were somewhat of an antidote for all the _'light entertainment'_ dross we endured back then. And today's tv dramas? Mostly formulaic, overly influenced by the USA and gun culture, written by focus group and often with too many producers involved.
Another honourable mention: *Alan Clarke.* Ever seen _Penda's Fen_ (1974, written by David Rudkin, dir. by Clarke)? Best _'Play For Today'_ I think I ever saw.
There's a film by Ken Loach called "Family life". That's a very tragic story about a girl who is abused and dominated by her ignorant parents and ends up in in the mental health system as a result. Her parents and the psychiatric system destroy her in the end.
A lot of the movie was shot in the dark and was impossible to see .
Geraldine James phenomenal performance as always with this lady a true talent who’s acting abilities are always outstanding. She deserved an Oscar for this role I mean she really did her research if u ask me.. truly amazing actress she never ever fails to deliver a performance I love her she’s a rare talent x
Well said. I really like Geraldine James. I read on wiki she has an OBE.
Oscars aren't given out for television films, but she could have been given a BAFTA, or an Emmy.
Rough one, thanks for sharing 😎
How do you manage to get these amazing programmes? They are so important. Thank you
Wish this film had some lighting.
We have this problem in Ireland where the farmers only stand for their own interests, they have voted for the present sham of a government to protect themselves, instead of uniting with the People and driving the snakes from the land. They wouldn't be bothered otherwise.
No relation whatsoever to this film

Absolutely brilliant
God the Brits made some hard-hitting television back the the 70's.
If you can find it look up The Spongers. Well worth a watch
This was one of many plays I was too young to watch because my bedtime was 8pm, so to view this play for the very first time is amazing. thanks Grove

@@janetwestwood9194Without doubt the most powerful character performance I've ever seen from Geraldine James, the toughest watch was how Sandra was awfully assaulted by that man played by Michael O'Hagan. Incredible television. 📺👏
Very sad this lady was so badly treated. I wonder what happened after the documentary.
Remember this on TV at the time .I was 9.
Another drama which tugged at the heart strings made by ITV, was Somewhere to Run with Michael Jayston shown in 1989. Very tough storyline about two teenage girls. Not been repeated since.
How terribly sad
Everyone was talking about this at school.
I watched this with my sister about a week after our mother of cancer. I was 10 and she was 9. It left a great impression on us. It was an amazing program which lead to the director getting to make Quadrophenia.
Great movie!!
Do Sandra is alive? She was born in 1955..I think..Where is she? Please let me know..thanks
According to someone here in the comments she is now happily married
So far in comments look to be about 3 people like me only seeing a bit of it or being set up to bed or in my case pretending to be a sleep.
All to young .
Does anyone know what happened to Sandra? She was my friend but i always knew her as Jean back in 83/84. I would love to see her again.
I did an interview with Geraldine James back in 1988. She said she'd been keeping in touch with Sandra/Jean by post. Oddly enough, Geraldine lives just down the road from me now in SW London. I don't see her very often, but I can ask. I met the director Franc Roddam about 20 years ago and asked why the film had never been repeated on TV. He said that Sandra's family weren't happy with the way they were portrayed.
@@Cameraman61 it would be great if you can contact her and ask if she knows Jean's whereabouts, I'd love to see her again. I've googled and tried but I can't find Jean. I did phone Geraldine once on Jean's behalf in the 80's but obviously didn't keep her private phone number because that would be disrespectful . If you can help I'd owe you. Thanks
@@kathleengreetham7583 If and when I next see Geraldine I will certainly ask her. Unfortunately, I don't know who her agent or publicist is.
@@Cameraman61 I really appreciate that, thank you.
@@Cameraman61 I'm not surprised the family weren't happy with it, there's little light & shade in the film, much like Alan Clarke's 'Scum' it seemed intent on moving from one grim episode to the next with grand guignol relish, serving violent abuse & misery up as entertainment.
The predictability of her decline combined with her hopelessness made me feel like a voyeur.
Not sure I'd want to watch it again.

Tx: 09 November 1977.
Everything ive seen from the UK in the 70s looks soo depressing and dull. Was it like this in real life or just on film?
I was a 70,s kid and no it wasn’t dull and depressing, I remember the heatwave of 76 and fun in the sun playing out and in the local outdoor swimming pool
, music was all different and great , and I had a great childhood until my sister passed away in 1977 , then everything seemed grey :( But Sundays were a bit boring as nothing was open ! I’m yet to watch this show and came for the comments as it looked very much like Sheffield but I read it was Bradford .

Thank you for uploading this rarely seen title.
I found it less of an exploration of a deaf woman's life as an exploitative, unpleasant and relentlessly predictable catalogue of male usery, cruelty & brutality. An impressive interpretation from Geraldine James but it did not work as an insight into life with profound deafness. For this reason I wonder what the motives of the writer & director were. No viewer could claim to have 'enjoyed' it, which leaves us wondering what we have learnt about life from a deaf person's point of view.
Nothing I would suggest as her experiences at the hands of monstrous men are all too common to women in general rather than deaf women in particular.
It was played at the time when this was real life for many deaf and dumb people Geraldine James was outstanding
She allowed herself to be exploited. She made the decision to live the life she led.
@@christophermartin7927
most ignorant comment award!! you sound like all the men portrayed in this film. she didn’t understand what was happening, she wasn’t taught anything useful in her life just that she couldn’t use sign language which would have benefitted her greatly. she was exploited and used and abused, starting with her own father!! can you not see the narrative in this film? are people really that thick? surely not?
@@bethmackins2433 She was attracted to the sort of people who treated her badly ie low life scum. A bit more common sense on her part would have see her lead a much more worthy existence. She certainly had the looks to do that.
