I have the DVD of the Beatles first US tour and love it, also have a DVD of the Ed Sullivan, Beatles performances and I have a Disney plus sub for when the grandkids visit, only ever watch it myself for Peter Jackson's, Get Back. I've watched the intro to Beatles 64, will find a quiet my time to sit down and watch it all but in no hurry,

I’m glad you liked it. I watched it and i felt it was more geared towards the new Beatles fans who are just starting to learn about the band. While there were a couple of clips that I hadn’t seen before, it just felt like been there already. It also lacked enough complete performances. The visual quality was good, I’ll give them that. I’ll stick with the first U.S visit DVD.

Just watched Beatles ‘64 on Disney+, every quote used in this documentary-even every word used-serves a purpose; the footage of the Beatles and the other performers featured in these moments of music history is superb; it is heartbreakingly sad to only now hear and see pristine sound and video footage of the American acts that influenced the Fab Four.

Love the makers of Beatles ‘64,

For me, the interviews in "Beatles'64" are extremely (!) important. Without them this brilliant documentary would be just another video showing the band playing live - something that had been putting me off the band's early period (up to 1966) for almost three decades. This new documentary and the "Eight Days a Week" brought me back to... well, to The Beatles.

i think "The First U.S. Visit" is great. you can clealy see how the Albert and David Maysles footage influenced "a hard day's night." from the train trip to the press conferences to the night club scene the similarities are astounding. i wonder if Alun Owen, the screenwriter of "a hard days night," was present during this visit and that's where he got most of his ideas and dialogue. i can also see where i think paul becomes depressed during this visit. by the end of the documentary you can see his ethusiasm has seemingly drained by the end of the visit. he may have been overwhelmed by all the attention. a depression will often follow a "mania" as the initial thrill of a wonderful event kind of deteriorates. it is an excellent dvd and i, too, highly recommend it. thanks for the smile.

@@adrianmist6681 ... are you saying you see no similaritiues between the 2 films? the similarity is too obvious to be a coincidence. i'm not saying the maysles film influenced "a hard days night." i'm saying WHAT was filmed influenced "a hard days night." i doubt alun owen ever saw the maysles film. but he was there on the trip during the beatles first visit. he witnessed the train ride, the press conferences and the night club antics as they were being filmed and put them in the screenplay of the movie. there's no other way to explain the blatant similiarities.

@cjmacq-vg8um yeah well it is possible. Of course there's a big similarity but would have had to work quick because they started filming in March. I'm guessing that locations have to be chosen well in advance, plus the train booked, I don't know how quickly they could have arranged those things. Although the dialogue can be changed right up till the last minute.
What if it had already been decided on a train journey for AHDN and Owen used the US trip to get the final script sorted?

@@adrianmist6681 ... all i'm doing is making an observation about how similar the 2 films are. its too uncanny to be mere coincidence. the film even ends in an ed sullivan type tv performance.
but for some reason you're making a baseless argument against this fact. its obvious to me that owen got much of the screenplay from this trip that was filmed by the maysles brothers.
btw - the locations are called "movie sets." very little OF ANY FILM is filmed on location. usually just the exterior shots.

@@cjmacq-vg8um hey, the 2 films are very similar, I'm not denying that. But there were only about 3 or 4 weeks between when both films were shot, is that enough time to plan an entire film, write the script, hire a train and a TV studio? Surely some of that preparation had already begun before The Beatles went to the USA.

      Hi,
I am part of the BEATLES 64 movie streaming on DISNEY+.
I am the only one who had color 8mm silent footage. I am also seen running alongside the Beatles limo
at the 46 minute mark, shot by the Maysles brothers. My color contributions are:
      1. The color footage of the crowd outside the Plaza hotel.
      2. The color footage scene of the girls holding placards.
      3. The brief color scene of Paul in the limo on the way to the Ed Sullivan studios.
      4. My name JOE SHEROV is in the credits, On the upper hand side of the screen at the last 20 seconds of the movie. I was only 17 years old when all this wonderful history transpired. Hope you all enjoy this wonderful piece of history.

I thought it was ok.The best thing about "The First US Visit" for me is that it ISN"T narrated. You're basically a "fly-on-the-wall", taking in the mania firsthand, and left to make your own impressions. The interviews in Beatles '64 by the people who were there, Smokey Robinson, Ronnie Spector, etc, are interesting, as are the interviews with the fans who were actually there... good stuff. But interviewing people who were no closer to the actual event than I was adds nothing of value, and just distracts from the focus and flow. Speaking of flow, the pacing was sluggish, to be kind. The whole thing needed a lot more of what we all love The Beatles for in the first place: the music! All imho, of course, ymmv...

I was around when The Beatles burst onto the scene and I thought this was a very well made film. It had a lot of historical value and covered more of the impact The Beatles had on race relations which was never covered in this way before. Beatle people have missed the point of this film. It wasn’t going to be a cleanup of The first U.S. Visit dvd. This film told a very important story of what happened during those 14 days and the huge impact The Beatles made during that 14 days. Look beyond what you wanted them to do and see the important historical value of this film

Unfortunately I'm finding it hard to be positive about this new film, yes it's great to see the footage restored and I did find some of the interviews interesting. On the down side, there was no continuity, no story and no excitement! Why did we not see the Ed Sullivan show, surely this is the whole point of the story? What was the point of the clips from a documentary about electronic communication? Overall I don't really think it was worth me subscribing to disney + plus for this, unlike the Get Back documentary which was well worth the the price 3 years ago.
    Glad you enjoyed it though.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with your comments. I was very disappointed with Beatles '64. I'm old enough to remember the unbelievable excitement of the Beatles arrival in '64 and this film does not capture the times. Why am I listening to somebody sleep walk through "All My Loving" near the beginning but not seeing The Beatles excite the nation with their opening performance on Sullivan ? Smokey singing "Yesterday" on Sullivan in '68 ? The headline in The Telegraph summed it up, "Beatles ’64: Martin Scorsese achieves the impossible - he makes the Beatles boring." Watched "The First U.S. Visit" again, far superior film that I highly recommend.

Beatles 64 was poor. The Beatles footage was mostly all seen before, and the new material was bizarre, for example, the interview with (the artist formally known as) Terence Trent D'arby, who was 2 in 1964, and the Jack Douglas' bizarre trip to Liverpool which meant nothing to this documentary. We got the cliched Beatles healing America after JFK's death at the beginning (which was followed by some horrible cover version of 'All My Loving'), the cliched Beatles championing black artists piece and the cliched Paul story about playing She Loves You to his dad for the first time; all heard for the million time. Also for a movie titled 'Beatles 64'. what happened to the other 11 and a half months? And why did we get a 1965 (note, not 1964) performance of Smokey Robinson singing Yesterday? The whole song!! Absolutely pointless.
