I love how Jimmy respects Clark. Monza '67 should have been Clark's greatest triumph but instead it was a mind boggling display of his incredible talent.
i was about to say something similar 🙂
Same here Tomas.
Mr. Blutarsky tis some wholesome shit
Agreed. Other than what Jimmy mentioned with it can also be difficult to tell how accurate the distances of the track are in the game engine correlating to IRL. Same with the car. Too many variances to hold the simulator as bible.
With that said with experiences like this that anyone could try it is unmatched and thankfully we live in an age where simulators are available.
@@popcultexpress did you just suggest that I posted bullshit when I said that Jimmy Broadbent respects Clark? Please reply so that I am crystal clear on that point.
Great respect to Jimmy for the humility at the end and reminding everyone the difference between sim racing and the real thing. Those cars were death boxes, and that's a game changer. Imagine how differently you would drive if you had to purchase a new computer each time you crashed. Consequences are the great equalizer. That any of those drivers competed the way they did is an extraordinary testament to their courage and skill.
or even better if ur life was on the line every time u crashed
What a brilliant comment: your comparison to having to purchase a new computer if one crashed is very clever indeed, given it's wildly undesirable but so much more desirable than a real crash in one of those cars. Very smart.
Humility.. haha, It's a game, bearing little relation to reality.
Those guys had to drive with their dicks tied around their ankles.
Stephen300o yes your correct but the same techniques can be applied to real life, understanding the track. Jacques Villeneuve said he’s learned tracks by just playing a sim of it. You can take real life things from the sim that will work in real life but yes it will always be missing something
Jim Clark was THE racing car driver. Not only did he race F1 he also did F2, touring cars, he raced in japan, he raced sports cars and was one of the few men to be an F1 champion and win at the Indy 500. A real hero
Did he ever race motorcycles though?
@@MDDeGrande1994 alright surtees son

The giga Sim racers have a meet.
Nobody can beat Jim Clark.
His 1967 Monza race is the stuff of legends.
Maybe an A.I. some day.
Jim Clark himself is for me the definition of a racing legend.
Probably the best driver of all time.

It'll have to be a good one ;)

I struggle with the "best of all time" title but if there ever was one, Jim Clark should be it.
@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X I struggle with those titles as well, but if I had to decide I am sure I have to pick Jim Clark.
At the end of the video you could also mention how heavily you were relying on the engine braking, especially into Curva Grande (basically redlining it on the downshift). If anyone tried to engine brake that aggressively in these old machines, I doubt the engine would survive more than a few laps.
Indeed
I didn't realize old engines couldn't handle engine braking
9:46 “thats come very quickly there. unlike my ex wife” :D
And in both cases we might say "You're driving this thing Jimmy".
@ Lol!
Was just about to comment the same!! Made me spit me beer out!!!!😂🤣😂🤣
I had to rewind the video a couple of times just to be sure, LOL.
He dropped that so casually, I missed it the first time. Well driven, sir!
In a similar vein, how about beating Fangio's 9'17.4 at the old Nurburgring in a Maserati 250F?
Cars theses days do 3 minutes around the Nurburgring
Edit:I’m talking abt F1 cars
@@calblack4156 bro the record is 5.19 in the porche 919 evo...
@@calblack4156 were are at least 5-10 years away from a car electric or combustion that can do that
@@calblack4156 3 minutes huh? You're suggesting there are cars that go at an average speed of 416+ km/h over a 20 km road, by the way.
According to Wikipedia, the current record for street-legal cars is 6:43.616, has an average speed of ~185.8 km/h.
For non-legal, the time is 5:19.546, which translates to an average of ~234.7 km/h.
@@calblack4156 you talking about the red bull x2010
Those last two laps were fantastic, looking to the right and seeing that wheel so close to the first apex, at that speed, in that car, it's just amazing.
I looked at that when he did it, I almost splooged. You couldn't have put a sheet of paper between the tire and the curb, then he's back on the throttle. Incredible, I loved it
If only they'd shown him SAVE FUEL sign.
IkranMakto wouldn’t have mattered, the fuel pump failed and 3 gallons of fuel was still in the car when they checked after the race.
rikki87sufc so it was fuelled but he fucked the engine by being so good essentially
Not sure about the style of pump used at the time but the standard mechanical diaphragm pump can't handle all of that abuse long term.
nice pfp
Joe Cool yeah but it still broke and let’s be honest the only way it would’ve not broke is if he retired
Hey Jimmer, I was here for the last bit of the stream yesterday, and I hope you feel better. Take everything at your own pace man, we're here for you.
Likewise. Very much this.
something happened to him?
Story for another day
was about to say the same. things do be like that, but only sometimes, jimmy. things wont always be like that my guy
@@mr12Robbo tell me then, at least short version
Actually over the last couple of days I've been driving this 1967 Lotus 49 around the Nordschleife in Project Cars 2. You have to be sooo smooth and changing down early kills you.
I'm convinced that these pre-downforce cars were the best F1 cars in history, and the Lotus 49 was the best of those.
these pre downforce and the early downforce were absolute beasts
They were the most challenging, certainly, but not the best. I respect the hell out of anyone who raced back then, but new cars are so far ahead of the cars back then that it isn't even a competition when you're talking how good they are as race cars
@@filmandfirearms Obviously modern cars are faster, and the racing is more sophisticated. But when was the last truly original design feature in F1? Was it Benetton's lifted nose, Renault's mass damper, Williams' 2nd brake pedal?
Hardly leaps forward compared to Lotus' load-bearing engine block.
I'd say the racing was better back then - the best drivers' biggest attribute was bravery. They couldn't drive on the limit in those days, you were either alive or dead.
Modern F1 drivers are metronomic machines, as are the cars.
@@BongoBaggins I'd rather the drivers almost always live through their entire career. You make a fair point, but when any sort of crash brings with it a very good chance of a crippling injury or even death, the racing can get restricted by simple self preservation. Guys like Clark were absolute legends, but Lotus would sometimes lose a driver a year
@@filmandfirearms Yeah safety had to improve and the cars were stupidly unreliable too.
But from a sim-racer's standpoint, these are just the best cars to drive.
Others will disagree, I know some people would donate a limb for a week in a simulator in a 2004 V10, and that's fine. I'd rather be in a Type 49 😁
I enjoyed this, Jim Clark is my favorite driver of all time
If jim would have driven this simulator...he might have beaten his own lap record by quite a few seconds for sure
And Jimmy remember, for all the reasons that you mention at the end about how dangerous that car was, Jim Clarke did that on a weekend where he had Thursday and Friday practice session around 2 hours each and qualifying on Saturday. Most of us mere mortals have put in hundreds if not thousands of laps in that car/circuit combination with a reset button just to even get close to his time.
One further "dare" which I would very much enjoy is seeing is you do the same time on that circuit with traffic (16 cars) , as he did, that would complete the challenge very nicely.
Cheers..
Grand Prix Legends, let's go!
Man, what a game!
Trying to pull him over to the dark side
@@GPLaps Still sad you stopped your Let's Race series of GPL all those years ago :(
I'm assuming he's using the stock Kunos Lotus 49 rather than the GPL mod as the two handle quite differently.
@@GPLaps I need to really put some time into it. And Assetto Corsa, for that matter. I just love how the old cars slide.
The question is when Jimmer will get a Prius to go on the Nurburgring who agrees all the car really needs is some 40 inch rims and some roll cages with a front and rear bumper delete along with backseat delete
Prius time boys!
Prius? Ahahahah!! Ugly car with stupid engine and not gearbox
First, what Prius you, sir, talk about?
Is it the road car or the GT300 racer?
Any sims got a Prius mod?

Was it just me waiting for him to pull out the 919 Evo
Demarco Gayle he did in Monaco tho
Now that you mentioned the 919, it makes me wonder how quick the 919 Evo Tribute would be on this Monza configuration...
The old one with the big oval is my favorite monza
Yeah I don't know why he didn't use it here as it was used till 1969
12:53 I totally agree. I recently set the world record in f1 2013 with the williams fw12 in Imola and that was a very painful achievement for me. Many laps were invalidated due to corner cutting. In addition, tuning the car setup was pretty hard too
I love historic content, and hearing tales about the Grand Prix Legends themselves. Nailed it.
That 11.40 save was huge man... that slide after 170kmh will rip my heart apart from my chest if that happen to me... old F1 racer really have my huge respect with their skill to handle it... thumb up man
My gawd, that was fantastic to watch! Thank you so much Jimmy. And thanks also for your reflections on why sim racing and the real world are different things. My home track in the real world is Calabogie Motorsports Park, near Ottawa Canada (BTW, that track is now available for Assetto Corsa, from Race Department). My sim has allowed me to experience going through corner 1 there, flat out. My natural survival instinct prevents me EVER doing that in real life.
I've been waiting for the "ex wife " line for ages ... hilarious 🤣🤣
Great driving as always mate - really nice touch explaining to people about the difference between the hell of 300 km/hr in an open cockpit and a cosy simulated one : the simulator only approximates real life and if it had been possible to drive faster really, Clark would have gone faster (his qualifying pace was the limit for his driving style).
A point that Brundle has often made about the great Nigel Mansell is that how fast one can drive is often also a case of brute physical strength perhaps, you can't brake a 60 kg load or steer/correct a 10 kg steering load into a corner at 170 km/hr as fast as a low load, fixed simulator environment - and even a simulator makes you sweat and contort at these speeds.
Furthermore, the physics force model in that the limit may simply not be accurate. The simulator is just that - an approximation to one aspect of driving.
I love the look of the 60's cars, Jim Clarke is the best driver of all time across the board, I used to live near his home town and used to blast around the same roads he did, which are some of the best rally roads in Scotland, in my Subaru WRX STI 330s, those were the days!
I'd like to see him trying to beat senna's record on monaco
Clark > Senna
“Coming down from the tunnel, watch out for that bump, and- OH NOO WE’ve found the wall!
While it’s raining
@@Zak-ob5ze Ah man I always think we cant really tell who is the best ever, especially comparing drivers from different times. They are all for sure in the legend class, and Senna himself had massive respect for Clark, saying that for him, Jim was the best.
@Yash Nayak yep.
Its insane how hard you can hear Jimmy working to get the lap time with no cars on track, and Jim clark did the lap record whilst fighting traffic! Jim Clark was the best driver of all time. I take my hat off to Jimmy though, his driving on the sim is amazing
Beating 1:28.5 is an achievement in Assetto Corsa and when going for it I just managed a high 1:27 :) Was a great afternoon.
I just love sound of that car. I could watch whole race easily. Im also glad you play in vr. Great video
Hi from Monza! Amazing to see the old racetrack again in all its glory. Thanks!
I completed this challenge a few years ago. Took me two whole weeks of trying. LOL.
FezzantPlucka lmao nice
Something important to factor in is the level of fear. You have to be absolutely fearless as Clark. He could die at any moment. True in auto-sport but the chance that he would die in an accident in that time period was very likely. Where as in a game there isn't an issue. Unreal.
Didn't know you were a racing fan CAMELOT! Awesome!
Jim Clark is so amazing, even he didn't know how he did it!
Some of my favorite races of all time have been the old open wheel classes on Toca Race Driver 3.
It may not be the best simulator but it did a damn good job of showing the differences between modern cars, cars with aero and old style buckets with wheels.
It takes balls to race a real car but the balls those guys had back then were a little insane.
No safety mechanisms, no downforce, their tires aren't even as sticky as the tires on good sports cars today, much less high end or race cars and they ran those old engines wide open with every bump and cheat they could get away with.
Literally a death tube with 400 HP and a smaller contact patch than my 74 Mercury Comet, one little mistake and you suddenly become a rocket that is being dismantled as you roll.
Kudos on the time and kudos to those that were there back in the day.
The first car with the famous Ford Cosworth DFV V8. It was also the first F1 car to use the engine as a stressed structural member to which the rear suspension was attached. I believe the problem with the car was a faulty fuel pump. Clark eventually finished third in the race 23 seconds behind Brabham who was 0.2 seconds behind Surtees. His win was the last for Honda until Button in Hungary 2006.
Amazing stuff from you as always.
I love that controlled slide out of the parabolica on the final lap, but that reminder of who's boss out of the 2nd lesmo was a cool moment too
Thanks Jimmy just for the the chance to see how it would of been before i was born! I have the utmost respect for drivers from this time as these cars were total death traps! And the chance to see how quick they really were taking in to consideration that one mistake would end their life!
Great idea! I'll try a last to first challenge with this car/track combination !
These challenges are so fun but the explanation of how amazing Jim Clark really was near the end of the video by Jimmy is why I love his videos. Great run Jimmy and long live the greatest Formula 1 driver, Jim Clark!
Wow. That was fun. That was EXCELLENT. I grew up watching those races, and for you to bring to almost reality what that was is the best homage there is.
And the sound: when you moved 5th down, oh, the sound!
you had my thumbs-up at "improve my monitor tan" LOL
This reminded me so much of blasting around classic Monza in a Ferrari 312 on Grand Prix Legends, the sound of the V12 roaring was immense!
doing the classic circuits are the best thing about asseto cosra, i wish there was a full retro gird and championship game on the playstation
I think the feeling of the car mechanically and the gs would actually help your lap times if you could get it in sim, but the little thing called death and consequence is the biggest difference between irl and sim racing
incredible channel, nice job Jimmy.
One of the greatest car/driver combos ever
Something im pretty sure Jim Clark didn't do, was to narrate the whole run tho. So Props to our own Jimmy! Also Thanks for the Content
one of the best video's of yours ive watched with the after thought, great stuff!
Clark had the benefit of slipstreaming when he set the fastest lap. In fact, he set it while he was unlapping himself from Graham Hill, Jack Brabham and Denny Hulme who were leading at the time.
Keithy P yeah but he also had to contend with the fact that any moment he could die those cars were death traps takes balls to set that time
In real life, the track surface is usually far less than ideal. Especially back then. Engines blew, oil got dumped on the track, etc. The cars didn't always perform flawlessly, either. So there are some real-world variables not present in sims, or represented differently than actual conditions on a specific day in history. Like, which way was the wind blowing that day? That kind of stuff makes a difference.
Great action there, a thing of beauty - and the mod's not too bad either. Nice to see you do this, and get the GPLaps seal of approval as well.
Speaking from experience in going from Sim Racing to a real (nerfed) Indy Car : Fear of death and/or doing something to get you embarrassed on the track is such that you drive A LOT more conservatively.
I love this format, given me a new appreciation for what classic F1 drivers would have experienced
“But I’ve got to do with this Fanatec gear shifter”, you’re to upper class for me now Jimmer 😂
Legitimate excitement watching that last lap. Bravo Jimmy.
Nice work. Incredible that someone could drive that when the penalty for a small mistake would be your life.
Le Mans Fastest Lap (until 1989, pole position) 3:13.90 Mexico Pedro Rodríguez with a Porsche 917 in 1971
"No fear for death" is I think the MOST important difference! Lap times '67 drivers could do is actually astonishing, thinking the risks they took. At Nürburgring 1967 Jim Clark qualified in 8'04": I remember to beat that time in Grand Prix Legends I "died" hundreds of times, while Clark had just one live.
He did those times while dealing with traffic, and he didn't get a blue flag to help him get by. Drivers would have been defending, or trying too, at least. That is insane.
Hope you're feeling better today jimmer❤
Awesome video. Nice to see the Lotus going round the track again.
Awesome video! Always fantastic commentary and a really fun time. Good idea for content and what a cool backstory! Love the car as well
thanks for the memories and for the video Jimbo!!

Jimmy vs Jim: clash of the titans
Clash of Jim
As a gamer,, not really a sim driver, i raced in Monza a lot of times in a lot of sims. As a milanese, i must say that IMO this is the first time i see a virtual environment that represents so closely the feel and appearance of Parco di Villa Reale. I'm impressed!
I race on here on AC all the time with the Ferrari and Lotus but with the full circuit. It’s great fun. When I was watching this I knew where the limits of the car was and was like come on Jimmer you can do it don’t brake for that turn that leads onto that back straight just a slight lift and floor it and commit. 😁 Also I always over shoot and lock up and the final turn 🤣 Love the 60’s F1 cars.
This car is much more fun to drive than I thought it was
It's stories like this that make me want to squeal like a little girl 😅 soo good as always keep it up man
nice words at the end jimmy good video!
Awesome lapping, Jimmy. Clark was the god of F1... IMO, none since has matched his astonishing race craft (at one point it seemed as if Senna could). My first as spectator was Jimmy’s last GP - the 1968 SA GP at Kyalami. That win was as memorable as any through the eyes of an eight year-old youngster. Keep up the retro stuff, Jimmy ... maybe try Grand Prix Legends at some point?
You should do the a historical AC legends spa race on a foggy morning in AC it’s incredible
I love the look of these old cars.
Nicely done Jimmer! It's a great combination.
Watching you makes me feel not so bad when I'm trying to drive one of those on a simulation. Those things get all over the place when driving them. I thought I was just horrible.
That final lap was highly impressive. What a clutch save.
Jimmy you are back!!!!!
Contemporary race attendees often have no idea how gifted Clark was. Apart from the extraordinary performance at Monza there were other events that mark Clark as an all-time racing genius, like the time he won at Silverstone with zero oil pressure. He coasted round right hand bends to preserve the oil and STILL won the race. Or other times when he was THREE MINUTES ahead of the field. And yet other times when he won every single race in a club meeting in multiple car classes, or when he threw a Lotus Cortina around Brands and Crystal Palace and won against the might of a Ford Galaxy. He was without doubt the most gifted racer of all time, and even Fangio agreed that was the case. Unlike Senna, Prost, Mansell etc, Clark won almost every race he entered in Saloons, Sports cars, F1, F2, F3 where the car did not break down. The only races he did not win in F1 were those in which usually mechanical failure interfered. If you analyse his DNFs then take away those caused by mechanical flaws, he won a far higher percentage of races than any other driver in history - and by percentage he got more back-to-back poles, wins and fastest laps pro rata than anyone else in history
He made virtually no mistakes, the only significant two being the Race of Champions at Brands when he overcooked it on what is now Graham Hill Bend, and when he totalled a Rally car while leading a stage in the RAC rally. Yes he was an ace in Rally cars as well! And to add icing on the cake, his mechanics reported that his post race cars typically had barely any tyre wear, almost no brake disk or pad wear and the engine revs never got near the limit.
That little summation at the end for how Jimmy could go faster than Jim Clark is missing something. It is true that these cars were monsters, a relatively very high power output with brakes that might as well have been made of chewing gum, not very grippy tires, and downforce wasn't even a concept yet. But despite all of that, they were incredibly fragile, especially Lotus. If you pushed a car like this over the edge, it would have one of two outcomes: either it kills you, or you kill it. Jim Clark was very good at racing his cars right on that edge without pushing it over, so they remained in nearly pristine condition. So beyond the whole 'comfort of my bedroom, no fear of death, no G-forces, no exhaustion', the other thing you do not have to contend with is reliability.
Holy shit Jimmer you are a racing god. I've been trying to get my lap times on this track with this car under 1 minute 30 seconds since I got AC. You have every ounce of my respect and more.
Love the disclaimer at the end Jimmy. Shows true class giving the man credit where it’s (obviously) due. That said. I doubt I can come close to your time in the 49 but, project cars 2 will let me try. 🙃

Great stuff!!!! Love any nod to the great Jim Clark!!
Good grief! Awesome mate! You're a hoot to watch and listen too!
Saw jim clarke race in longford, Tasmania in 1968 what a legend .
Last 2 laps must be the best of sim racing history. Not in my 6 years of sim racing I have seen someone racing this car on the edge similar to what they were doing. Was imagining that’s exactly how he was racing that car on thus race back then.
9:46 Goddamn it Jimmer, you're better than this xD
On the other hand, good effort with those laps and a cracking outro!
According to race reports from that race, Jimmy gained the lap back because he and Graham Hill were towing each other along lapping 2 seconds quicker than everyone else at times. So when Hill retired from the lead he was nearly a full lap ahead of Brabham in 2nd , Clark was in 4th by that time, still with Hill. After Clark finished they found 3 gallons of fuel was still in the car and it was the fuel pump that had failed.Never the less a great performance, but it was also a great drive by Hill too.
One word from the real world - JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was the Best of the Best. No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark.
This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius...

My favourite Jim Clarke stories are of how absolutely useless he was in a road car. Like, he would be driving home to Scotland and suddenly realize he'd forgotten whether he needs to go left or right at the very last intersection, so he'd just drive straight on into a ditch. Or the time he got T-boned exiting a service station (in a rental car with two other F1 drivers on board) because he had neglected to check for oncoming traffic. And so on. Makes it even more amazing how absolutely brilliant and fearless he could be on track.
And I would absolutely love to see you do a Jim Clarke Spa challenge (from his famous victory in '63): lap old Spa in a Lotus 25 in under 4 minutes with only one hand on the wheel while in fifth gear.
that was great fun to watch, nice one
Awesome video Jimmy, I had to try it! My best was a 1:27.728, loads of fun!!! Thanks for this video!
I absolutely LOVE when you take vintage cars on vintage tracks!
Those cars were so cool-looking.
So jealous. What a set up you have 👍🏻
Being an old person who was young in the 60s and 70s and raced in a Lotus 7 many moons ago, this video was fascinating. This sim business looks like serious fun. Minor query as I followed a lap, and maybe I wasn't paying full attention, but I'm surprised that there would be a drop down to 2nd for the Parabolica. I'm not an expert on gearing for what was, in those days, the fastest Grand Prix circuit on the calendar. A big brake from max speed certainly, but even so Parabolica is not a slow corner. I would drop to 3rd and pick up 4th towards the exit, but then, like everyone else, I was not Jimmy Clark....
I like this history class better than mine
