- In this video, I do a side by side comparison of the Sog Seal Pup and the knock off version on Amazon. Though there is no real comparison, it’s interesting to see what someone can get for $10. #sog #sogsealpup #knifereview

The Seal Pup knock off
www.amazon.com/Zenport-14096-...
I bought my seal pup about over ten years ago. Was my first fixed blade knife i bought with my money. Thank you for giving it the respect. Very tough knife. Mine is practically a pick at this point
4 knockoffs for cost of 1 pup. Tape them up in locations for backups.
Two of my favorite knives in this world are the SOG Seal Pup and the SOG Tech Bowie. (the Bowie 2.0 is too purdy to carry!)
P.S. In 1968 my brother in law was a Marine attached to a SOG unit in Vietnam. He was captured by the Vietcong in late 69 and was one of only a couple of dozen men to escape from the Vietcong or NVA.
Wow! Thanks for sharing
I agree buy what you can afford
1. excellent review
2. How to sharpen a serrated blade, done easily.
Option 1 - get a small, rounded file that fits in the groove. Your choice - rounded file of the same diameter or a gradated slope.
Option 2- go to the smooth side of the blade and "sharpen" on the smooth side of the blade like you would on a non serrated blade.
3. I have the SOG knife in my collection. IF I were an outdoorsman, wore blue jeans or had to use a knife multiple times a day, it would be a very good choice. Different design, but I have a pile of inexpensive Moras for the days when you can't get the more expensive knives.
Thank you!
I appreciate your honest reviews of these inexpensive knives. I use them for giveaways and backups. Can't do that with the full price ones.
yep
I love the design of the seal pup/seal line of knives, which is reminiscent of the mac v sog knife of the vietnam war. I've owned 3 seal pups, but gave 2 away to my buddies in the military. I also own the seal team/2000, which is the bigger brother of the seal pup and love that one too. And I also have the sog tech bowie, which is the more modern version of the sog bowie 2.0. While looking around for a new knife like I normally do, I stumbled upon the zenport seal pup. At the time, it was selling for 7.99 so I went and got 2. I just love it so much that I bought another 2. I ended up giving one away to one of my guys, but I'm keeping the rest and have already modified a handle with multicam paint and made a nylon sheath for another. For those that don't know, this seal pup design is actually from the original sog seal pup made in seki, japan. Anyway, great knife and great review!
Thank you!
Excellent video! The absolute main reason I buy budget blades, is so that I "don't" beat up the expensive ones I've worked really hard to get!!! It's that simple (for me) and that seal pup clone you have there, fits my bill perfectly, thanks!!!
Yes sir! It’s a great knock off!
I have a number of SOG knives. Including three SEAL Pups. I have two with the nylon sheaths and one with a SOG Kydex Sheath. I also have two of the larger SEAL Team SOG Knives. I have a line up of other SOG Models.
I like the Pup because it's light weight, you don't even realize you are carrying it. It's easy to maintain. The handle is just so comfortable. And I like the non-reflective blade surface. As a tactical blade it's so very versatile. You can use it on anything and carry it anywhere. It could be used as your primary blade but for me it's a back-up unit. It can be utilized as a Bushcrafter blade or a fighting knife. I think it's one of those blades that is a must have.
Not knowing what is going on with SOG since it was sold. For the last little while many of the blades that made SOG famous have NOT been available. You never know if they plan on cancelling the Pup as well. You cannot get a SEAL Team or any others now. So get a Pup while you still can.
I think purchasing a couple of the knock offs is a good idea. As a beater knife they would probably be a really great buy. They look attractive enough and kept within reason the tasks you have it do for you. I'm sure it would prove to be a good buy. I will have to look and see if they are available here in Canada. Buying a few such knives to put in your different tool boxes/carriers is what I thought to do when you showed the knife. Looks like a well made budget blade.
I have sharpen serrations on my seal pup by rolling a sand paper as thin as possible (600-800 grit)and passing it in between the serrations. Finally running a flat little stone along the back side. Works perfectly
Armory plastic kydex sheaths are available between 4-5 inches. They work great for the seal pup in case you want another carry option instead of the nylon sheath. All you need is a heat gun and some foam sponges
I wanted ro cry knowing seeing the poor field boot get gutted.
😭Looked like a really good boot
The souls were gone and the insides were torn up a digging into my foot🙂👍
Always appreciate your reviews brother!
Man I always love your videos. You give an honest review and you make it cool. Keep up the good work brother
Thank you my friend!!
A ten dollar knife in your pocket is better than ten dollars in your pocket, when all you really need is any knife 👍
💯💯
In most cases, something is better than nothing. If something only costs $10, then you got something for a little more than the price of nothing. If your cheap knife actually has a full tang, not a rat-tail or short tang, and the heat treat is properly done, cheap knives can work just as well as expensive knives. In many cases, especially these days, the manufacturer of the cheap knife is, also, the manufacturer of the expensive knife. Check the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). That's the company that actually made the knife, for the company that's printed on the blade. If they made the expensive knife well, chances are, the cheap one was made well, too, with less expensive materials. It's not always the case, but if your $10 knife snaps after one day, you're only out $10. I would test the cheapie BEFORE going into the field with it, though.
Glad I found your channel dude, I’ve been looking at the Seal Pup for some time now too
Awesome! Thank you! I have bought even the elite series and will be creating content on those as well
@@411Outdoors I look forward to watching mate ✌🏻
Thanks for the review of this knife, I've seen it and like it but thought it would come very dule , and not I see it has a real edge from the manufacturer. 👍
Thanks
I gonna go ahead and buy the knife. I really enjoy making leather sheaths to budget knives.
Sold. Followed your link to Amazon and put it in my cart. Opted for the kydex sheath for a few bucks more. 👍👍 (Just to clarify...I'm getting the SOG, not the knockoff)
Good move! Such a Bad A knife!
10 dollar 💵, make you holler!
Yes! Haha
If you looking for a budget fixed blade that is dependable for things like bushcrafting but aren't worried as much about the tactical look I would recommend the Morakniv Companion 4.1" stainless version. I believe they use 12C27N. I picked up a black one for $15. It's hard to find a knife that will hold a edge like it will for the price. I thought It would be another option for the budget fixt blade people.
Great knife!
I was issued a Seal Pup back in 1998 or so. Best knife for the price! I torched mine for years before it finally broke the tip on a rock, being an idiot :). The sheath and knife were still good to go after combat, canoe trips, hunting, diving, para trooper fun, backpacking and saved me from sinking a river raft in some narly rapids when the anchor dropped unexpectedly. Just save and get the real one! Your knife is a life saver and mans best friend.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
Bear grylls is now selling a seal pup knock off on amazon
I saw that 👍👍 might do a quick review on it
TACTICOOL! I'm thinkin' tee-shirt!
Love my Pup. Going on ten years now. I didn't really care for the nylon sheath. I had a kydex one made for it so I can scout or appendix carry it as an EDC defensive weapon. I don't carry it in the woods. I've gotten a Gerber Prodigy (similar to the Strongarm) for that. Supposedly there's an American made version of the Pup. I haven't been able to substantiate that though. I was only able to find the Taiwanese version and I guess they're making them in China now as well.
I'm definitely a sucker for the menacing look of a clip point too. 🤗 Great vid 👍
Thanks for the review.
After a career in metals and corrosion, I first had to look up the difference between AUS 8 and Type 420 Stainless Steel. I was a little amazed and amused at the inconsistency of information online. Things seemed much simpler when I could go to ASTM standards or ASM references and get a single, simple answer. The primary differences seem to be that AUS 8 always has a small amount of vanadium and a fairly consistent carbon content near 0.75% while Type 420 Stainless Steel does not have vanadium and can have carbon contents anywhere from 0.15% to whatever someone wants to make. As I try to do a rough estimate, I'd guess that the upper limit of carbon content for Type 420 Stainless Steel is around 0.4%. A large range of carbon contents can qualify for someone selling steel as Type 420 Stainless Steel.
A lesser difference is in chromium content. Type 420 Stainless Steel can have 12 to 14 percent chromium, but most is likely to test at just over 12%. AUS 8 is listed as 14% most of the time, but some places say that this steel can be in the 13 to 14 percent range. Where a range is acceptable, the actual content is likely closer to 13%. I don't think a percent or two of chromium at this composition is going to make a difference in knife construction.
If the factories that are making knockoff knives (presumably in China) are making only knives, they may be ordering batches of Type 420 Stainless Steel that have higher carbon contents. I never assume that Chinese factories are making anything within specifications. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have factories making Type 420 Stainless Steel for all kinds of uses. When they get a batch that is significantly higher in carbon, they may send it off to the knife makers. That could lead to all kinds of inconsistencies, and inconsistencies are what we expect from Chinese manufacturing.
AUS 8 seems to be a boutique steel created for the knife industry. As such, I'm guessing that quality control is much better on the foundries making this steel. The compositions of each batch are going to be more consistent. That better consistency will make heat-treating results more consistent. The places that work with this steel probably go to greater lengths to ensure that heat-treating is done just right. Any individual knife made from the Type 420 Stainless Steel in the Chinese factory might have just the right amount of carbon and receive just the right heat treatment to perform extremely well. On the other hand, any individual knife might end up with much less optimal treatment and properties.
For someone who has the money to buy a SOG and wants a knife that is more likely to be good out of the box and function reliably for years, the SOG will be the obvious choice. I'm less a fan of buying a knockoff because I want to look tacticool or pretend to have a specific high quality knife. The other side of the equation is that if I have a hunting camp and want to cache a few knives around the place in case I need them, buying the cheaper knife might be a better financial choice. I might never need the knife anyway. If I do, the knife still has a good chance of doing what must be done. The knife might not hold an edge as long, but I don't expect the knife to be my steady companion for years and years.
Thank you for your professional and well laid out information.
Great info!
Bear grills has his own version as well.
Thanks for the video sensei! Take a look of the nedfoss dark phoenix for me looks insane. Have a great day sensei 🤙🏼
You as well my friend!
I've had mine since 2002..I think. Back when they were made in Japan. Didn't get a lot of use, but it has a home in my collection
Nice review as always. The Seal Pup is made in Tawain, which is still free from Communist China. Plus, they make good blades in Tawain. The Pup definitely deserves consideration. I have the SOG Pillar, which is made in the US but costs more. It comes with a nice kydex sheath for easy access and concealment. Ha, I agree you can't have enough knives, but my wife certainly does not share our valued opinion.
😂😂 I understand for real! I’m in a pretty good position. In the fact that I get to hide behind my UA-cam channel. I say “But honey, I need another knife to review” 😂😂
@@411Outdoors Good one.
I have both the Seal 2000 and the Pup. Seki Japan
Cool video
Thank you!
Would like it if they brought back the seki japan version and if you have one there going for $200
I have the sog eod multitool its fantastic
I have first version issued sog seal and the first version that cane after that one m22 i think that is the modle #,i want to get the rest of them and chase down a couple 2000s
I have this knife, and love it. BUT - any blade four inches or longer is ILLEGAL HERE IN NEW YORK. Stupid but true.
Havent bought that one yet....next now!😉
I love this is it every day carry fix blade for certain days. I love the nylon she does. It looks more like a work carry but yet you have this awesome tac blade 😂
@@411Outdoors always wearing a neck knife, but attach a KABAR TDI to my carry bag. It's a Cop thing!😉😊
have a seal pup (camo blade) love it got it back in the day when they 1st came out carried a few time while on the job. still have it in the collection. have you tried any knives from Off Grid yet??
I have not but I’ll take a look at em👍
@@411Outdoors deff check out their kitchen/camp knife series & the Caiman folders are a must
SOG seal pup on sale for $127.99 in Canada, unfortunately being a knife lover in Canada is a pricey passion.
Wow! Is that the Elite?
Sorry yes it is the Elite, the seal pup was $107 @@411Outdoors
If I hadn't gone on a knife buying splurge I'd be tempted to buy this knife lol for budget knives I recently stumbled upon a Chinese company HX Outdoors I bought two of their full tang knives model D-305B-2-CA and TD-18-CA one is in D2 steel and the other is DC53 steel.
I think I seen you in Franklin County with a fixed blade with pocket clip
I’m from Pittsylvania county. Can you remember what time frame it was? I’ve done a little bit of traveling here and there.
I had a Seal Pup a long time ago. At least 15yrs ago. Is that handle still hard as a rock or is the gfn different? I am a sucker for clip points, but that design is just so old to me. Maybe if I never had one I'd want one.
I get that totally! The handle is very hard
I'm mostly convinced the knockoff will be a better knife if you don't spend 200 bucks on a sog knife it's probably going to break or that's always been my experience anyway I just haven't had any luck with sog except the folder's they seem to be great
That ten dollar knife better then prison shank
Well said!
Did you see them tiny 🐜 crawling around that giant knife I'll bet they thought they won the lottery when you payed that knife of the log lol
Hahaha! Yep
I guess you get the cheapo, grind off the tip and edge and use it for a trainer
Very true!
Were SOF issued a SOG knife in Vietnam? Iv'e heard some were issued the Gerber MkII but I heard some MACKVSOG were issued a SOG. Do they make a reproduction. Do you own a 1918 Repo Trench hnife aka Knuckle Duster?
I sure don’t my friend
@@411Outdoors Attention America: Today 6-6-24 I watched a video of a reporter on the southern border questioning Groups of Middle Eastern men (who were entering America illegally without being stopped) , what country they were coming from. (Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, and other Tunusia) . Biden and the Border Patrol are putting all Americans in Danger by letting single undocumented Middle Eastern men enter unabetted and Unvetted .
You mentioned ferro rod remember when talking ferro rods its best to have a carbon steel its best for ferro rods
👍👍
It cannot be thrown though, I did it before and the tip broke off
Are you talking about the generic one? 👍 throws are absolute torture.
@@411Outdoors The SOG seal pup
Why the figure grooves. Just why!! Makes it uncomfortable for me.
Interesting thanks for sharing!
I’ll pass lol
Not a seal pup fan or not a knock off fan? Either way that’s cool
I’m not a fan of the Seal Pup I sold the one I had, I’m really not into clip points. I literally own hundreds of blades (addiction) but hardly any are clip points.
I have 8 or so SOG knives still in their package. 1 of them being a SOG field knife 4.1in which has no serrations (not crazy about those type blades). 7Cr17MoV. Most places have them at 32 to 38$ Surprisingly our TSC Farm store has knives clearanced almost all the time. I got this at $9.99, same prices for Kershaws and some machetes for $5.99 Kershaw, Gerber, SOG ect. Good to check out which why I'm posting, not comparing the field knife to the Seal Pup. Also, Rural King Farm store every once in a while has sales on knives. Before the end of 2023 they had 60% off sale. I picked up a Strongarm for $36 and a couple of Buck 110 for $26. Rural King will ship to your home, not sure about TSC. I love to get bargains even Temu stuff. Good luck on knife collecting.
@411outdoorsllc hope you got my emails.
Let me go back and check my friend. I’ve had a time coming in lately from companies wanting me to review this and that haha
