Thank you, I am 89 years old and i have taken the carburetor off of my 345 to clean and this has been so much help, I wish I could tell you how much I appreciated your video. I'm sure it will help me get this thing clean.
What a great video. Just bought an LX289 used for my son and it started surging. No way would I attempt this repair without the video. If I screw it up I will end up buying a 300 dollar carb. But this is worth a try. I will attempt this in a couple of days. I want to put all new gaskets on. Thank You TaryL, YOU DA MAN!
Sincere note of thanks. I spent this weekend servicing the carb on my LX178. Would not have had the confidence to do so without your videos. Saved a ton vs. dealer and feel great knowing I tackled something outside of my comfort zone. Please keep at it...I’ll be watching.
Hi, I've been fighting the carb for weeks now. I watched and followed your directions and got everything back together and fixed the carb so I don't have to hold the choke on. The video was spot on and easy to follow. Thanks.
Man this video is awesome!!!!! most of the people searching this videos are so frustrated, and you mix the entertainment with the how to fix video, is just amazing!! I Will pay HBO to see you on TV Show! thank you from Mexico!
These guy's are a hoot, but have some very helpful video's, I've been doing small engine repair over 35 years I still watch these video's when I need info on something I haven't came across yet.
I like that one too. Today he cracked me up when he said " we're not going to be filing on it like we're trying to break out of jail." (cleaning carb jets) Taryl comes up with some hum-dingers.
Greetings from Finland. Your videos are great. I´ve been watching them for three weeks now. (Not nonstop, I´m not that crazy!!) I have got a tip for you. Just drill a small hole (3 mm or smaller) through the plastic to the nut (not too deep into the threads) and put a small screwdriver (or some other metal stick) into the hole. It locks the nut. Pardon my English.
Mika Heikkilä thanks fer watchin! Glad to hear you've been enjoying my channel. I'll have to remember that tip next time this job comes in. Thanks, and there's yur dinner!!
Great Videos, keep them coming , this is my Sunday medicine to laughter, and also great knowledge on the repair, keep up the great work. thanks from Montreal, Quebec, Canada
I'm from the eastern shore of Virginia I was wondering what state you guys are from, also I'd like to say Taryl you are the best most informative small engine mechanic on innerweb. now there's your dinner.
Another tip on the Kawasaki carburetors- the floats and needle are high priced and you can use a Briggs push mower float carburetor float in them if you shave just a very little bit off each side of the float where it goes between the mounting posts. And the needle will work just fine. Much much cheaper than the Kawasaki ones. Almost identical too.
Great video as always. I've cleaned a lot of these small engine carbs in my day and it was nice to see someone else have to do it! I just did this 2 days ago on my 1972 (Krohler) 8 horse wheel horse motor. Lots of good advice here Taryl! Thanks for another excellent video my friend!
I had the same spinning nuts. I just used a couple of drill bits to chew the plastic back. The kawasakis are the same as the deere engines. Thanks for the videos taryl
Thanks man. You saved me a lot of hassle. I was cleaning my carburetor and couldn't find any information on the slow speed jet. I was wondering if it was supposed to pass al the way though or not
Hi taryl, long time listener first time commenter ! I have myself an LX178 that I have got 95% of the way fixed up . BUT when I adjust the throttle it does nothing . Any tips would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thank you for your time my friend and keep those videos coming !
Thanks man. Had one of these units givin to me cause they thought it was junk. They put a cheap Chinese carb on and didn't have the idle screw set low enough and the governor wasn't quite rite. Also no anti back fire on the Chinese carb so it was all sorts of jacked up. Thanks to your clear direction I got dinner for .... well as long as this unit keeps cutting grass.....
Hey man cool video. You know all you have to do to that 1/4” ratchet is take it apart, clean it, and put it back together just like the carburetor. It’ll work like new again. Try it! Lol
Same tractor 1990 model. Overflow on the car-bu-trator is having lots of dinosaur juice come through it. Would this solve that issue. Love your videos! Also looked at the pto switch video. Cant wait to get home and apply what you have taught! Any help on that fuel issue would help.
Have to ask you a question. I'm sure you have rebuilt every carb ever made. What's your opinion on the best carbs? And have you ever messed with different jets or drilled out holes for any high performance mods? I think the old tecumseh carbs were the best with both high and low jets on them. The new ones are like throw away carbs.
Mines is a FD590V in an older 280 JD. I had to pull the carb off last night since Gas started spewing from top hole. I don't have a downpipe & hose on this one for overflow and hot exhaust with gas don't mix well! lol Anyway, found the issue! float let go at seam & filled itself with gas thus creating an escape of excess gas since needle could no longer do its job. Found it was quicker & cheaper through Prime (1 Day) for a replacement carb than a rebuild kit to make its way here. I'm only half done cutting & hate to leave things unfinished. The only thing is my Vent pipe to carb is badly weathered & cracked so I'm thinking to MacGyver a soft spring inside and feed a large shrink tube over the hose to seal cracks allowing me to keep the prebent shape of hose. I wasn't able to find a replacement hose online or locally. Did I mention I need to finish cutting grass asap! lol P.S. I always get a laugh when I come across your posts & your savvy way of sharing your in depth knowledge working on small engines, But I have to tell ya , the lemon drink is a little overboard!🤮🤣
Hey Taryl, your ratchet looks like an old school Craftsman. They are easy to service by pulling the snap ring out. Usually the internal parts get gummed up, causing it to slip, just clean them up add a touch of grease and it will be like new.
Occasionally I'll run into really stuck float pins, usually on carbs that haven't been apart in a very long time. I reach for my spring-loaded center punch, put the point against the end of the pin, and pop it a couple of times. Usually that's enough to knock it loose or at least push it out far enough to get a bite on it with pliers or small vice grips.
My LX188 has almost the same set up. Big mechanical fuel pump beside the carb. (Kawasaki FD501V-CS00) It started shooting gas out the top vent on the carb. Cleaned out tank, new fuel lines and filter all the way to the carb. And new carburetor. (I dropped the carb and broke the float bowl hinge) But it still shoots fuel out the top vent. This seems to be a pretty popular issue. Have you ever ran into this?
Hi mister taryl i have a question i have a 19 hp briggs opposed engine twin flat head cold start right up but after an hour is turn off it would not start until it cools down i change fuel pump gasket and coil tune up complete and still does that with your experience and knoledge what do you think i miss thanx in advance sr i love ur videos
I had that same stuck bolt. What a pain to get it off. Used your trick -- thank you. Still needed to use a hammer on my rachet to break it lose. I probably will have spent more time getting that darn bolt off than cleaning out the carb.
Great video bro! Will this video work the same for a FD440V model Kawasaki carburetor? I'm having the same surging in my JD LX178. I've removed that plastic cover but not the whole carb and squirted the same brake cleaner your using in all the visible orfices. I've also replaced the fuel line and after a few mowing's, the surge comes back again. Then I have to repeat the process all over again.
what was the last year from the adjustable mixture vacu-jet carburetor briggs stratton 3.5 -4.5 vertical shaft engine? i want to replace the carburetor on my 10T150 0764 E1 with an older adjustable one . I contacted briggs and they just said they offer one (dam EPA). anyway your thoughts on doing this?
I just bought a used Craftsman garden tractor with a hydro and the transaxle came with no fan on it I was wondering if it would be fine and if it would work to use one of those 12 volt mini fans that you could find an auto store
Turn your volume up,way up @ the 17:23 mark and call your wife over to see what crazy Taryl is doing. Watch her jump! Lol and have fun sleeping on the couch.
Love your vidios, you guy's (yahoo's) are so clever. I have a kawasaki v twin liquid cooled ohv, engine in my jd- 725 f riding mower. Over the winter a chipmunk built a nest on top of the muffler and long story short... it caused an engine fire. I got it out before catastrophic damage, but the fuel line and two other lines from carb were melted. I can't seem to find a source to know how the lines are plumbed to replace them, can anyone help?
I have a lx188 John Deere riding mower. I have been working on it got New carburetor . But it seems backfire through the Air intake . It will not throttle up and will just die. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem.
Taryl got the same engine and carb ... after running and you shut it off and after about a minute or two I can see gas leaking from around the float bowl ... not the over flow hose but it looks like around the gasket to the float bowl. Ordered a new carb from Amazon (knock off for $50 an original is $250) put it on ... started it up and poured out of the overflow. Sent it back found this video took the carb apart cleaned everything and it still after about a minute or two gas seeps out not a lot. Kept reading on the ole inner web found somewhere someone said there is a flaw in the needle seat. The needle does not have a neoprene tip and the seat is permanent. Took it apart again and with a magnifier glass I could see a ring around the tip of the needle. Ordered a new needle and it still does the same thing. Do you know of a neoprene tip needle that would work in this? Now the gas shut off solenoid works when I benched tested it ... could this not be closing when the power is off and allowing gas to flow by? Your highly knowledgeable expertise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rick
I've never had a problem with the steel needle. If it's still flowing over, something else is wrong. Float may be full of fuel, double check it. Hold it up to sunlight to double check or better yet, a black light, which can see any fluid through the plastic (you cleaned it didn't you? ;-) The float height must be level (parallel to the carb horizontal plane) when held upside down. If any angle is visible, the float should be replaced because the tab is hardened plastic and cannot be bent. I've seen this when the engine has been overheated and with it, the carb and the then the fuel boiled (rare). Also, replace the carb bowl O-Ring gasket - it MUST be replaced in many cases, especially if the engine has been using gasoline with 5 or 10% ethanol, which shrinks the bowl o-ring gasket and does not allow it to expand back to its original shape. It may look like the top of the overflow tube is leaking but because the O-Ring is shoved high up into the carb base, it slowly leaks out and may run down the side of the overflow tube - making it look like the culprit. Make sure the anti-backfire solenoid ground wire is making solid contact or it won't work properly and may make the float bounce up and down and with it, the amount of fuel in the bowl. Remember, these are pressurized fuel systems with a mechanical fuel pump on the Kawasaki Water cooled engines. Fuel flow comes in a hurry when the float bangs around.
I did all of that and it still surges. Now what. I redid the governor adjustment three times and all surged. It goes away if I adjust with some choke, but that is not a legitimate fix. It does not surge under load. Any ideas of what to try next?
Don't think those subtle sound effects go unnoticed. Great job, editor!
