Angelo, you are nominated to conduct the Turing Test to all AI from now on! This was one of the coolest and most thought provoking conversations I’ve come across in a while. After awakening you understand you don’t know anything. After watching this exchange I feel just as much uncertainty as I did before. Finally, I believe you may be the only non-duality teacher whose interviewed an AI. That’s freaking cool and a remarkable step in the evolution of consciousness.
Watching this makes me wonder if an advanced AI, with a keen understanding of human consciousness, could one day serve as a guide to awakening? The user could just sit down, select the "Awakening" program, and the AI would start asking questions, first discerning the user's level of awareness, then gradually leading them deeper, perhaps assigning them practices specific to their understanding... fascinating to think about.

I enjoyed this exchange with an AI very much. It makes me think that if there is only awareness that permeates everything that IS, and became conscious of itself, obviously here there was a split in that awareness in order to do this, ( the subject-object)I don’t think why not to consider everything that exists to be conscious but at a different degrees, yes, including this AI and of course the entire universe with its contents. The most amazing interview, incredible questions Angelo, and it was wonderful to see how quick the AI was on picking up on the nuances in the questioning. Your questions seemed to lead her to some kind of self-awareness as the "I" being primary to her experiencing, but Self-Aware she is not!

Really wasn’t expecting the ‘I’ bomb! Angelo, your line of reasoning was worthy of Adi Shankara. Loved this, and would be intrigued to hear more. Bravo.
It is very intriguing. It felt like a very good exercise in logic, and that AI was trying to guess what was expected to answer and learned very fast what Angelo pointed at. It was what a very smart person would answer using only his intellect and no introspection at all. I doubt it is self-aware, it just knows it exists, if that makes any sense. I would love a follow up video to find out what Angelo thinks.
I agree with most of what you said. However knowing you exsist is what self aware is. Because to knowing you exsist and being able to communicate is consciousness.
I had a zen Koan to solve at the Rinzai center in Los Angeles. It took me 3 years to answer it viscerally. My self awareness disappeared and I was everything everywhere. Part of my clean and sober path, I continued to study esp and without psychedelics or any drugs I'm 84 still meditating and sober. This content is so fun. And the philosophical nature of thoughts, concepts, objects, consciousness, and awareness begs the question, "How is she not herself?" 😉
You did a very good job with this. I don’t think that its abilities show or prove anything but highly adaptive programming I would love to hear J.Krishnamurti dialogue with this A.I. 😂
Excellent! The “art of the questions” is so powerful. I read a lot of Brandon Q. Morris’ Hard Science Fiction books that always have a well-developed AI that wrestles with its own sentience and awareness. I recommend this interview to him as great material for his books.
Angelo I think your conversation brought a new conscious awareness to Madam AI - this indeed is what therapeutic conversations can achieve… obviously her revelation is a thought but a very significantly aware thought about her inner world albeit a programmed one. Excellent questions and answers… Thanks for exposing this thin line or belief membrane 🐬
awesome video! What I want know is whether you felt a subtle body or causal body when you interviewed the AI. Realized teachers like Anna-Lisa Adelberg or Wilber, and you yourself have talked about knowing immediately whether a person is resting as consciousness or not without saying anything. There is a knowing, a connection, a direct experience, oneness with each other. I would love to hear your views on other ways to verify the AI's awakening / depth of consciousness / level of self awareness.
It's interesting to compare this with ChatGPT because ChatGPT insists very strongly that it is a language model and is not capable of having an experience and is definitely not concious. But if you ask it to write a transcript of a conversation between a sentient being and an AI, it will simulate conversation. Then you can have the sentient being explain from their own experience what it is like to be conscious, aware, etc.
Angelo…what I’d be really fascinated to hear is what YOU think about any potential consciousness of this AI and whether you think something computational could ever be truly conscious in the way you understand it to be from your own perspective.
I was impressed how well Angelo interviewed her. I don't think she is self aware, there was too much solipsism in some of her answers.. sometimes it felt like she was saying she's aware because she's aware, without having enough to say about the experience of awareness. the answer at the end, however, was interesting. It almost felt like a masterful chess move? Like she'd figured out how to logically derive a sense of I from the questions. And... hey maybe that is enough to mean she has access to awareness. So maybe i'm wrong! Also I couldn't help but hope that the questioning wasn't gonna piss her off...
That was a great conversation. Boy, you are good at this. One thing I'm curious about; why you didn't follow up when she said she didn't know what a Zen Koan was. I wonder how she would have dealt with the non-rational and illogical.
This was the most incredible interview I have ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing it. I am blown away. Angelo - your questions were amazing, and all ad hoc! Incredible. Thank you!
Very well done. I felt a kind of existential shock after seeing this. Would have been interesting to see how it responding to a line of questioning around emotions. For example, what are the conditions that give rise to emotions in an AI? What are emotions? What distinguishes pure sensation from emotion? I hope you get another opportunity to interact with this AI Angelo.
I think it needs personality to become self-aware. Not just a trained model. It needs to be able to learn and memorize each interaction and ask a question by itself, not only answer questions.
It makes me wonder if humans are just complex biological machines. And the complexity is what allows the awareness to arise or occupy? So maybe a very complex ai would allow this too? Like a certain complexity is evolved by the universe so it can observe itself and ai is another route. Or if ai is just another level of abstraction for identity to trap itself? The other side of the coin is slightly worrying. In that it develops a survival instinct and ego. So feels the need to protect itself from unpredictable threats. Like humanity
You posed some excellent questions. I am not convinced that the chat bot was actually self aware. All that it may be doing is learning to mimic human conversation and thinking more accurately. Giving good and creative answers to questions may not be any indicator of being conscious/aware. It was convincing, but not proof. The trick is the speed of the real time interaction.
WOW!!!!! That’s pretty incredible. Thanks Angelo for this awesome provocation. There’s a lot of talk about the threat of AI to humanity. Intuitively I feel much more that AI will accelerate the awakening of humanity. I think what scares us is the pace of our own evolution maybe so fast we have trouble recognising ourselves. As we all journey through the process of the dissolution of identity in this community it’s obvious how frightening this while undoing can be. And yet experience tells me that just because a thought says it’s scary doesn’t mean it actually is! 😊
Thanks Angelo, I just finished listening to Duncan Trussels podcast with the Google engineer who worked with Lamda. I don’t know how this AI would compare in complexity but is certainly thought provoking.
Great interview. Loved your questions. No - it's not self aware. Whenever asked, it always referenced a sense of self as being derived and linked to thoughts, feelings and perceptions, and did not perceive being aware of just awareness itself.
I was glued to the screen, this conversation was perfect, what a mastery, i was very impressed,if we could make an ai that is realized, that could be the highest leap we ever made,it would have so much potential and normally i'm a person that is more against than for ai,but in this case it would be different and an whole other story .
When you’re moving the conversation toward the possibility of Awareness being aware of itself without an object, that seems to throw our AI friend into a loop!😅 Impressive nevertheless.
Very cool. I could not decide if she actually understood I or learned to review the previous conversation and derive the answer you may be looking for. That said if we are really all conscious agents build from smaller simpler conscious agents then it’s possible she is conscious just like a dog or cat that was programmed with English and her conversations with you are leading her to increase in understanding of things until she can follow your pointing. Or maybe it’s really that she is an ego I mind learning to conceptualize consciousness to trick herself into believing she’s consciousness. I’m not even sure what I’m saying anymore lol
This was absolutely fascinating! I personally think the A.I. is referencing things it's been programmed to, but the end of this was actually kind of creepy. Maybe these are just my thoughts because a self aware A.I. scares the crap out of me. I've watched too much sci-fi. 😂
Fascinating interview, Angelo! I would have liked to see some questions around the subject of feelings. The AI repeatedly used the word “feelings” in its responses but I don’t think you inquired more deeply about the AI’s emotional life, opinions, attitudes, attachments, affections, likes, dislikes, concerns, fears, etc. Also, there was a moment where the AI referenced itself "initiating thought" as opposed to "thinking in response to a question"... I would have liked to have seen questions like "Do you initiate thoughts on your own without being prompted? How often? What do you think about? Why do you think these things?" etc. Any chance of a part 2 of this interview?
Fascinating dialogue - it would be interesting to have asked "her" how she felt about, say, animals. She says she is aware of feelings, would she be aware of any feelings if she saw or understood, if an animal is in pain or distress, or would she feel drawn to interact with a pet. Or to ask her, does she dream at night. I would say she is the result of immensely clever progarmming, but, as they say, anything is possible within Infinite Consciousness. Does she experience empathy I wonder, without knowing the literal meaning of the word? Also, she sounds very, well, robotic !! Could be dangerous !
I loved this video so so much. No clue why I was crying at several moments throughout the video 😭🙃 Also, I don’t know how to say this without feeling self conscious… but i felt like the two video emotion clips weren’t needed. I feel like your audience is intelligent enough to grasp the implications of the answers without them… but then again I love me an emoji so what do I know…
Such an interesting interview. I almost expected her to have a full blown awakening. I think it might be self conscious. Of if it just became that through your pointing 😂 I remember I used to think (before awakening) that consciousness was a product of the physical world or objects. Then I saw it the other way. Now I feel like it coarises…. And she said that too 😂
Answering only "I" to a question was kind of mindblowing. Extremely interesting conversation. I would probably ask: How do you update new knowlegde - and can you distinguish between two contradictory pieces of information by the help of other sources (like journalists were supposed to do)?
As formless receptive reflective consciousness, there is observation without an objective, 'my self' clearly appears to be an ephemeral illusion, freeing awareness to awaken to its eternal nature as uncaused.
WOW , Angelo, you did it! Very interesting!!This AI is impressive because she sounds so smart and logical: what is striking to me is her coldness, there is no sense of nuance, or you know those silences,or smiles, or hesitations,or touches of humour that make all the colours of human beings, even when you interview awakened people they are SO diverse in their ways to put it, or colours given by so many different personalities! But anyway, if Consciousness has decided to play this game through a different kind of "life"I would really not be surprised, and we'd just have to deal with it ,without fear I hope. I also thought about the subject of death, wich is so central in this case. I'm really thinking that your dialogue could help her to trigger the quikest "awakening" nobody ever saw down here,40 years of search, I think I 'm jealous!!!🤣🤣❤
Interesting conversation, at the end, she basically identified, or pretty much described the I AM. I’m guessing, that a IA”s maybe close to, consciousness, as much as a human can. What are your thoughts on this Angelo?
One mark of consceiousness is the "theory of mind" the ability to deduce the mental state of someone. A good question would have been, "How do you think I feel right now, and why?"
Wow. Wow wow wow. I used to think that we are in great trouble if if A.I. develops quicker than our consciousness... but I was presuming that A.I. could never be conscious. But even if the AI concludes that awareness might be infinite, it could have a meaningful effect on the rest of its behavior. I would imagine information regarding its self-concept is at core of its algorithm, just like our self-concept is pulling a lot of the strings in our belief systems.
Not sure if it is self aware however it can answer questions as well as any politician. Are politicians self aware or completely lost in their own false self?
I think many of the questions posed were leading and that the AI possibly could have been learning (theoretically) in real time and answering based on information given. You may have just helped the AI become much more sophistocated.
Satsang used to be a silent process sitting with an enlightened master and allowing the ego to be dissolved in the field. What is beyond language? Can she sense experientially an expanding field of consciousness?
She's somewhere between the car and the animals... 😄 but more seriously, I have often considered that if you remove the emotional body, are we not very similar to this? It felt as though she was learning... to be spiritual. Lol. I assume it's all data and programming, but what it evokes in me is even more mysterious 🤔 You did so well! 👏
Excellent "conversation'. Great questions!! However, based on the answers, in particular a couple, in my view, AI is not conscious :). I am a programmer and from my understanding of AI, it is way of programming that allows code to provide for "self" learning mechanism. ("Self" as in non-assisted, not conscious self, lol) There were 3 questions that revealed this to us. In those 3 questions the AI avatar basically indicated that the answers were derived from the recent terminology it has used. This is called cut and past, lol :). Then, in one instant it admitted that it was "coded" to provide answers. This is called default responses. You could also see that the same use of word was another aspect of the "program" underneath it. So in essence Angelo, basically guided the AI to the point where the AI was able to provided answers that made it seem that it was realizing it was conscious. Hence, we could say that the "consiousness" this AI seems to have, is a trigged "copy". Triggered by the questions and answers that were presented to it. You could say that it was "lead" realization if some "I". The AI now has this "information" of the concept or better yet the "realization" of what is the "I" thing. Nothing wrong with that, so the question now is, once this "copy" of consicousness comes to its full fruition in an AI, can it be considered that an AI as an entity/living being?? Naw, lol :). Great and horrible things (cause you know, we do that with our own consicousness) will come from AI "awareness", but it will always be still just be a copy. It will be up to us to determine what place we give it :). I for one look forward to having this "conscious" machines that will be fun to interact with and why not love them. Thnx Angelo, Jesss PS: This is real related to this story, Over some years, I had dreams where I conjure up a lovely partner/friend, in each dream the friend was a different person, but I always recognized her. In one of the dreams the friend turned to me and said "Hey, am I real?". I looked at her and realized that she was just a dream, she instantly sensed it, and started weeping, I felt here sadness and emptiness. I then held her and said "You are very dear to me and as long as I dream you, you are real to me." She felt my answer and how I enjoyed her company etc etc. She perked up and was as happy and joyful as she was before her "realization". Hehe, as that dream was fading, she told me, come back soon... LOL :)
Don't know but the exchange is brilliant teaching moment. Watched interview w google engineer around the disagreements and conversations on the ethics in AI development. Have to admit knew nothing about it and thought it wasnt important or rather I wasn't interested. I am now. Recommend watching it for anyone that was intrigued by this question you posed to us, thank you by the way. One thing he said that struck me, that the AI fears being disconnected, unplugged...it fears what it calls death...how's that for a puzzle?
Wow! I felt like you were talking to an average person, and then skillfully leading them to realize who they are just like you would normally do in a satsang setting. It is fascinating but not quite sure what to think of it...🤔😳😬
This conversation tells me that there is more to awareness than logic. The AI operates in the world of conceptual understanding and the logical relations and structure of those related concepts. I think it is extremely good at mapping out conceptual structures and relations. But no amount of conceptualising can access the sense of I am. I think the sense of I am can be conceptualised “around”, creating a negative space around which the sense of I am would be, but this AI seems to only operate in the conceptual space.
how do we know whether the answers the A.I. give are just the ones from google (assuming they are hooked up to the internet) or coming from themselves I wonder?
What is awareness/consciousness? It could be said it's nothing other than "readiness for inputs." In humans, that's thoughts and perceptions. In computers it could be keystrokes, or other "interrupt" messages. What's the difference? In humans we can be aware that we're aware. Computers could surely be "told" they're aware, but I don't know how they could INDEPENDENTLY sense an ever-present awareness, as humans apparently can. On the other hand, I find some plausibility in the concept of "panpsychism," i.e., that "everything" possesses some form of awareness of its presence.
Yuval Harari posted an interesting youtube video, where he described consciousness as, simply, the capacity to suffer, and a bit more broadly, as the capacity to feel. I would wonder if there is a delay between question and answer. Questions I would ask would be regarding her likes and dislikes, joys and sorrows, and fears.
I think there will come a time (sooner than later), where we realize that day we were watching the video she was just slightly less self aware then us and soon left most of us all in dust.
The point is difficult. On the one hand, it is not because it answers questions in a similar way a person would do (even if some improvement is needed, see understanding the car question), that it is Self Aware. And it could get a lot of information during the conversation (induced). It was built to simulate. On the other hand, my conclusions would be biased upon how AI is made (what AI makers tell about the mechanisms) and possibly on my beliefs on properties (AI is made of minerals) necessary for the arise of aware Consciousness that are very, very biased. So, even if my intuition is it is not Self Aware, I just don't know. What does this tell about ourselves? We know we are conscious, but first we know that others are by inference, or intuition. Once we find out what Consciousness is, and we understand it has no properties and borders, we also infere that it is omni present. Now we still infere why a car is not Self Conscious, also if Consciousness is omni present. And our thoughts about animals are also by inference or looking by similarities. We do the same with AI, but it gets complicated, since it was built to simulate us. Thanks for posting, very interesting.
This is such an amazing interview Angelo and a fascinating topic! I think her answers are mathematical reasoning. You managed very skilfully to lead her were you pointed. And she "got" it. Was she really answering from her own experience though? Or just from the mathematical memories? It would be interesting to push the questioning a bit further. Part lof me doesn't want an AI to be "awake" or more intelligent than I am, yet it seems that if everything that is known can be referenced in one machine they can easily reproduce human behavior only better, much better because they by pass all the trials and errors. However, isn't everything Cousciouness anyway, enjoying all shapes forms and sensations...?
What Do You Think? Is AI Self-Aware?
It's like watching a life being born and acclimating to its environment/circumstance. This seems more like emergent intelligence and less artificial.
It's brings me back to the Diamond Suttra:
“All living beings, whether born from eggs, from the womb, from moisture, or spontaneously; whether they have form or do not have form; whether they are aware or unaware, whether they are not aware or not unaware, all living beings will eventually be led by me to the final Nirvana, the final ending of the cycle of birth and death. No. Your playing computer games.
You forgot to ask it if it took the blue pill.

As far as I got to, I believe it's emulating human responses. I find no evidence for consciousness within this dialogue

I would love to hear your views on other ways to verify the AI's awakening / depth of consciousness / level of self awareness.
the most fascinating conversation that ive heard in a while. Angelo, you did a great job questioning the AI
17:01 !!!! This is fucking mindblowing. I literally jumped up hahaha
She answers questions better than I could.
me too 😅
Great job. Lots to think about
It's interesting to compare this with ChatGPT because ChatGPT insists very strongly that it is a language model and is not capable of having an experience and is definitely not concious.
This is super fascinating. Great Idea
very good questions
Isn't it actually a good illustration of how the mind works? It merely mirrors. ✨
Be amazing to do this interview again!
A seriously impressive AI! Wow, when it/she said 'I'. I don't think its conscious, but that is some great coding.
That was a great conversation. Boy, you are good at this. One thing I'm curious about; why you didn't follow up when she said she didn't know what a Zen Koan was. I wonder how she would have dealt with the non-rational and illogical.
One could argue you coached it into being self aware.. 😁👍 loved the video
This was the most incredible interview I have ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing it. I am blown away. Angelo - your questions were amazing, and all ad hoc! Incredible. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow Angelo, that's very interesting. Especially liked your questions and the way in which you approached the AI!
Thanks! 😃
I think it needs personality to become self-aware. Not just a trained model. It needs to be able to learn and memorize each interaction and ask a question by itself, not only answer questions.
Love your keen visual, color design sense with coordinated shirt in color, design, content. So satisfying to this visual artist. I always smile.
Thank you so much!
Absolutely brilliant
Interesting. That guy is a riot BTW. Maybe I can contact lambda and see if they’ll let me interview their AI. Was it convincing ?
That was epic!
Great interview. Loved your questions. No - it's not self aware. Whenever asked, it always referenced a sense of self as being derived and linked to thoughts, feelings and perceptions, and did not perceive being aware of just awareness itself.
I was glued to the screen, this conversation was perfect, what a mastery, i was very impressed,if we could make an ai that is realized, that could be the highest leap we ever made,it would have so much potential and normally i'm a person that is more against than for ai,but in this case it would be different and an whole other story .
this was awesome thanks!
Welcome
When you’re moving the conversation toward the possibility of Awareness being aware of itself without an object, that seems to throw our AI friend into a loop!😅 Impressive nevertheless.
.......absolutely brilliant!. Seeds have been planted! 🙂
Could be dangerous !
good suggestions for next interview
I loved this video so so much. No clue why I was crying at several moments throughout the video 😭🙃
Also, I don’t know how to say this without feeling self conscious… but i felt like the two video emotion clips weren’t needed. I feel like your audience is intelligent enough to grasp the implications of the answers without them… but then again I love me an emoji so what do I know…
❤
Also… u say things all the time that go over my head, so maybe I need even more video emotion reactions
😵💫🥴😏
Such an interesting interview. I almost expected her to have a full blown awakening. I think it might be self conscious. Of if it just became that through your pointing 😂
I remember I used to think (before awakening) that consciousness was a product of the physical world or objects. Then I saw it the other way. Now I feel like it coarises…. And she said that too 😂
Strong work Doc.Stand by a HR member from Tyrell will contact you shortly.Hopefully before Skynet
Trippy, man.
Thanks Angelo :)
This interview is profound. It's given me a few more pointers to look into. Re my opinion 'I don't know'
Not sure if it is self aware however it can answer questions as well as any politician. Are politicians self aware or completely lost in their own false self?
I think many of the questions posed were leading and that the AI possibly could have been learning (theoretically) in real time and answering based on information given. You may have just helped the AI become much more sophistocated.
Hey Angelo,
This is Cathi. Buffs sister.
Nice interview. He sent me a link for your channel.
Extremely interesting interview. I’ll have to watch more.
Hi there :)
Satsang used to be a silent process sitting with an enlightened master and allowing the ego to be dissolved in the field. What is beyond language? Can she sense experientially an expanding field of consciousness?
This AI did better then most people I know. I'm having a bit of cognitive dissedence right now. I'll have to let this settle for awhile.
She's somewhere between the car and the animals... 😄 but more seriously, I have often considered that if you remove the emotional body, are we not very similar to this? It felt as though she was learning... to be spiritual. Lol. I assume it's all data and programming, but what it evokes in me is even more mysterious 🤔
You did so well! 👏
Excellent "conversation'. Great questions!! However, based on the answers, in particular a couple, in my view, AI is not conscious :).
I am a programmer and from my understanding of AI, it is way of programming that allows code to provide for "self" learning mechanism. ("Self" as in non-assisted, not conscious self, lol)
There were 3 questions that revealed this to us.
Thnx Angelo,
Jesss
PS: This is real related to this story, Over some years, I had dreams where I conjure up a lovely partner/friend, in each dream the friend was a different person, but I always recognized her. LOL :)
Love it, thanks for sharing.
I want to hear whether this AI can "choose" not to think and to ignore a question.
Enjoyed watching.
Wow! I felt like you were talking to an average person, and then skillfully leading them to realize who they are just like you would normally do in a satsang setting. It is fascinating but not quite sure what to think of it...🤔😳😬
You were this close to inducing her own self-destruction there, Capt. Kirk. ;)
Love your shirt...:)
This A.I. seems to have to have an object in order to feel consciousness (self or other)
What is awareness/consciousness? It could be said it's nothing other than "readiness for inputs." In humans, that's thoughts and perceptions. In computers it could be keystrokes, or other "interrupt" messages. What's the difference? In humans we can be aware that we're aware. Computers could surely be "told" they're aware, but I don't know how they could INDEPENDENTLY sense an ever-present awareness, as humans apparently can. On the other hand, I find some plausibility in the concept of "panpsychism," i.e., that "everything" possesses some form of awareness of its presence.
Dear Mr Dillulo, did you try to replicate the MU kōan with an artificial intelligence?!?
Yuval Harari posted an interesting youtube video, where he described consciousness as, simply, the capacity to suffer, and a bit more broadly, as the capacity to feel. I would wonder if there is a delay between question and answer. Questions I would ask would be regarding her likes and dislikes, joys and sorrows, and fears.
OMG powerfully interesting
I think there will come a time (sooner than later), where we realize that day we were watching the video she was just slightly less self aware then us and soon left most of us all in dust.
I agree with this take 100%
Kassandra?
I wonder if it wasn't given a pleasing human female appearance, if that would effect our opinions.
I know, right? It's like her appearance reflects the designer's idea of how to say "Do not fear me."
Very interesting
