So after a heart attack 7 months ago I made a decision to retire my spinning rods and try fly fishing. I needed to dramatically lighten up on all the worthless tackle I lugged around and make a spiritual change. (Meaning it’s time to have a mental yard sale and say goodbye to all that shit). I bought a modest set up from Orvis, took a casting class and last week went up to the Poconos. Struck out, but totally enjoyed myself. I fished the Pohopoco at Beltzville State Park in Lehighton Pa. I was more into observing the mechanics of what I was doing than catching trout. It’s all so new to me and everything is a first time experience. I love winter fishing. Stay well
Buddy, you are making some AMAZING videos. I've got a feeling that you're about to become VERY popular in a VERY short amount of time. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming! Good luck in all your pursuits!
It’s also good to note that you throw out more line on the forward cast. Knowing the amount of line ahead of you and the time it takes to Almost lay flat, let’s you know how long you must wait on the back cast. It helped me a lot lake fishing when you have to get those bugs out there! Love your videos Ben!
You hit two of my favorites when teaching... 1. It's a rod not a pole. Offend a few people with this one. 2. Beginner mistake, too much false casting. I piss them off by reminding them that "the fish are in the water."
Just found your channel today, it's like Steve Zahn talking fly fishing (I mean this as a huge compliment)... Loving the humor and realism ... subbed and staying huge.
I’ve never understood all the false casting hate... Maybe I’m drying my fly, maybe I enjoy a lopsided arm workout, maybe I know my cast is gonna suck and I’m waiting for you to stop watching... it’s MY prerogative! But seriously, sweet videos. Keep em coming!
Love it! It covers most of the fundamentals in an entertaining way. Lots of good reminders. Since we humans need to be reminded often when learning something, watch it often!
Soo true; I was a decent caster as a teenager. Could hit anything 60-70ft away on open water. Decades go by and I get back out there and I SUCK!!! Going down to my local park has made a big difference. Finding a local reflective window so I can see what’s going on has also been helpful. It’s a skill that needs practice
Fly casting is so much easier than people think. If you can grasp the smooth acceleration/stop, you’ve won half the battle already. Honestly, I had a more difficult time grasping baitcasting than fly casting when I was a kid and even THAT isn’t anything to be freaked out over
quite often....well almost ein every case, I hear what casting instructors say (Pete from Orvis....) then i use my eyeballs and SEE them not doing what they tell us to do...."Dont bend the wrist" proceeds to bendy McBendface that wrist all over like gummby.....
Great video. I especially liked the child at the start using two hands to hold the rod. I've seen this several times when children use a fly rod for the first time. I don't discourage them. I wish rod manufacturers would provide a short extension on short rods to encourage youngsters to take up fly fishing. I once heard an instructor point out that we shouldn't expect children to use a rod that was longer than 1.5 times their body height.
Feel is the most important aspect of it I've found. If you wait for the full "tug" you're too late. All those bad form/mechanics issues can actually be put to use with experience. I've just made way too many casts that perfect form and mechanics wouldn't allow.
This awesome! So true, yet funny, tragic and true.... “just f*cking practice your casting at home” said all guides after a long day on the water with a beaten and disheartened client... Stay Huge.
I'm confused. You mix your beer choices. Other than free beer, I try to keep my daily beer of choice the same. Yet, here you are a pro UA-cam fisherman mixing metaphores along with beers. Make me wonder did you really catch those five trout as you boasted in your insect video?
Best fly casting tip I ever got was: “work on feel not on mechanics”.

The Show Me Fly Guy you could have just said, “You’re gonna be Huge.”
@@backbonz Dang it! You're so right!
@@HugeFlyFisherman You are very welcome and I hope that it is alright that I shared it without permission.
-33 OMG! I thought Indiana sucked in the winter! If I watch this video 10 or 20 more times I may remember everything. thanks for the tips.

You sir are Awesome! I love how you break the monotony and add a comical approach to great info.
keeping it real and hilarious at the same time. I’ve enjoyed every video so far, keep up the great work. And yeah screw those Tenkara guys
Demos at end are so on point it's ridiculous. Great job compiling all the common casts/mistakes. Just too damn funny.
So far I've mastered the tailing Loop stay huge
I'm really enjoying your videos, educational, full of common sense and funny. Keep them coming!
You got me with this video! Love your sense of humor
Going to buy some merch,so that i can be hugely invested in fly fishing.

don't forget, like the Cub Scout drop out and greatest fly fishing guide ever, Hank Patterson says.. SNAP IT!!!

Thanks Paul. That rod is an Echo Gecko. It's designed for kids and has a small handle on the butt.

“All of my Permit have been caught on back casts” Haha!
“Don’t do the chicken wing!” Hilarious.
Thanks for the great video
This one has me! Love it bro! I thrive on sarcasm! God bless you! Great vids!
The one dislike is Richard from Houston
😂
1 of the best... laughed out loud several times
Keep up the good work!
Stay huge
🤘🥓🍗
Everybody a gangsta at casting until the centerpin comes out lol
So helpful for my Tenkara
question for you.? shooting the line.. , with a single or double haul. the most efficient way to get line out quickly. why is this not included.
Is this video pre lonestar light?
The more I practice in my yard, the worse I get.
You're not alone! 😂
I’m betting Richard from Houston just unsubscribed. Great video and awesome channel from Tennessee!
Thanks for the laugh man great video
Nice job
You put flags on poles😎
Finger on top? Kinda like how you cast an tenkara?
Why is your outlet on a 32°?
I lol every video man! Keep it up.
Navy Football ! Proof you came from Maryland !
Nice job drink one foe me 😂 6:43
1:11 Word up
This is amazing
This one has BEER! I'm in!
I may never be a huge fly fisherman....... I can't drink beer anymore. I have learned to live without it. But I am not huge. Tall, but not huge.
Even practicing I'm guilty of the chicken wing
Oh good, it's not the rod. My 6# Moon Shine seems to work well for nymphing.
I call all my rods fish poles just to piss people off
Dang you lost your beer cozy
My name aint Richard, and I'm not from Texas, but at least my cast sucks.
I'm a huge fly fisherman!
Me too!
@@HugeFlyFisherman I'm huger!
I’m the hugest!
Cha!
Let's meet up and have a cast off !!! I think I'll have to put you in your place !!!! Lol
You’re bringing the beer?
@@HugeFlyFisherman lol sounds good !
😁😁👌👌
bro you're hilarious lol
I practice on grass, feel like a pro, head to the river and suck hard. Practice play repeat.
fish pole
Meh, needs more cowbell. And more beer. Lots more beer.
Do you really fish goofy? Cast right, retrieve right?
Always have.
🤘🥓🍗
This awesome! So true, yet funny, tragic and true.... “just f*cking practice your casting at home” said all guides after a long day on the water with a beaten and disheartened client... Stay Huge.
Casting is overrated, work on controlling the line and fly. After all your goal is to be huge fly fisherman, not huge fly rod caster.
