The Mercedes-Benz E-Class ought to be the rock on which the company builds its church and in some markets it is, outselling its rivals from BMW and Audi. But the car's image suffered a downturn in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Things started to improve but it wasn't until the introduction of the W212 series, the ninth generation of E-Class in 2009 that things really picked up. This was a car to be proud of, which really took the E-Class's original reputation for solid build quality and refined elegance and established it once again. This is now a great used buy. Here's what to look for.
History
The first clues as to what the 2009 E-Class would look like appeared a little earlier. The Concept FASCINATION design study of 2008 gave us a clue to its detailing and proportions but it wasn't until January 2009 that we first saw the real thing at the Detroit Show. In 1995, the E-Class was the first Mercedes model to appear with the highly acclaimed twin-headlamp face - a highly symbolic design feature that still characterises the identity of the E-Class. The designers of the W212 E-Class reinterpreted those four "eyes" as rectangles, and this more angular look was mirrored in some of the surfacing, especially in bonnet and boot line.
Newly-developed four-cylinder CDI diesel engines suddenly became the prime focus of the E-Class range and the E200 CDI, E220 CDI and E250 CDI units proved popular with customers. The six-cylinder E350 CDI offered both more power and better economy than its predecessor, the E320 CDI.

Grear video. The Mercedes E200 (W212) is the best used car on the market today! Quality, solid, good size and practical.
Just got w212 E220 estate for £4k @ 109k fully serviced. Seen a few bad ones, this was bang on the money.
Sold my w211 & got the w212 than the w213. Simply the w212 was better to drive over rough roads & more solid build quality.
Champane motoring for lemonade money.
❤🎉❤
What differences stand out between the w211 and w212.

Body style.
Pick up & Performance
Better road manners in the w212.
In the w211 better quality of materials inside the car. The engine & gearbox is fantastic too.
Previous owner probably sold it due to known issues with this model.

Not really.
The past owner works as a Merc mechanic in Arnold Clarks & got the saloon model instead.
@ 115k I've just replaced the rear air suspension bags @ the cost of £250 including parts. Which is normal @ this mileage. The Merc. Stealers were quoting me £900.🤪
Next mot will need 2x Rear suspension arms @ £200 including fitting.
Still a beautiful car to drive & looks robust.
I love my E350 bluetec.
Great review, Jon. tqvm. .just bought a 2012 e250 cgi amg specs, teronite grey exactly as shown. Still feels elegance yet sporty...love it!
I've had the E350cdi coupe now for 5 years. It's been really rather good. I had it remapped to somewhere around 290hp and 475 ft lbs. I'm not sure if I'd recommend remapping it, as the torque is crazy. You have to be so careful with the go pedal.
I get 50 mpg on a run and it's very comfortable. The stereo is great. The rear seats fold down, but it's not the most practical. When it comes to lugging stuff around - I've had to disassemble a tumble dryer and sofa to get to the tip. I can get a bicycle in the boot though.
The only issue has been water dripping onto the ecu from the wiper arm in the scuttle panel. I'm hoping some silicone might have fixed that.
To be honest, I can't think of many other cars that I could see as a worthy replacement. I think it would have to be a V8 Lexus or a V8 Mercedes CL or SL. Possibly a Honda Legend if on a budget. It really depends on where VED rates and fuel costs are headed in the future.
just dropped on an e350 2010 amg sport, in black...❤
Less Ground clearance is the main issue in rural roads.Present value in India only Rs 10 lakhs to 12 lakhs for W212merc diesel sedan
I remember this guy fron the vid citroen nemo😂
I wish i can buy one of these❤
The Estate is nicer but both it and the Saloon are incomparably more distinctive, aesthetically pleasing and without later models laptop-like over sophisticated technology.
Spot on.
Also better build quality and smoother over bad roads.
I like the butchy looks too.
❤
Love my 2013.
This is one of my favorites, and the diesel engines can easily do 500,000 KMS
Straying from the "what we need to know" including the bits that will bring you to a complete stop without warning. Since most purchases are the 220/250 why are you in a 350???
Nothing wrong with the 2012. They upgraded some things and it’s faster and more reliable. You will not be disappointed if you use Mobile 1 and don’t go 10,000 miles before an oil change!!! 5-6000 miles is enough. And change your coolant regularly such as every 40,000 miles and same on the transmission. It will be reliable.
You neglected to mention the timing chain issues and the need to remove THE ENGINE (OM651) to replace the chain guides because the timing chain is at the REAR of the engine. Not a cheap repair !!
This chap needs to get his shirt size sorted?
Every video.
😂😂😂
Yes. Next
The W212 has presence but does come with problems,
My rear subframe corroded through this is a known fault on the C and E class of these years. Mercedes replaced for free but stung me £1200 for new road springs and brake pipes since then the car sits nose down and they say there is nothing to do with them. They also left one securing bolt loose , claiming the problem was on the car before they replaced the frame, I no longer trust the main dealers in cheshire !
The manifold is made of plastic again a known fault area ,, it cracks putting the car into limp mode, to replace its a pig cheapest quote was £900 i did the job myself cost £90 for the manifiold there is plenty of info on YT.
Parking sensors can and do play up.
Use premium diesel the alternative cheap diesel may soot up your particle filter
Oil cooler needs replacing every 60k to 80k first signs of trouble is oil in your coolant.
Auto box needs service at every 80k
Replace coolant every two years.
My rear brake disc dust covers have corroded away, that will be a shitty job to do !
Mine is an E220 so i change the engine oil every 4000 miles.
Some Es will pull to the left mine does.
That's what i have experience in 4 years of motoring, its a great car when it behaves itself , one last point it does generate silly messages, these usually disappear on subsequent start ups.
The engine is a very compact unit, as such things are buried, i hope i never ever have to change an alternator .
My next Mercedes will be a W222 S class, I also have a 1990 R129 SL ( hobby which i bought for my 50th birthday i am now 73)) the materials used in that car are of far higher spec than those used on the E class.
Ps buy one with Xenon headlamps, mine are the "ordinary type and one feels its not good to drive at night, my neighbour sold his same model E class stating at night time he couldnt see the road !!!
I'm considering buying a used one (estate). which one and in what condition would you recommend that would avoid the problems you experienced if that's possible?
Why would manual or petrol be silly?
Manual is less comfort and clutch is expensive, automatic box is very strong and durable when you do oil changes on gearbox every 80.000km...
Gasoline is dumb as E Klass is heavy and you need displacement for torque then a gasoline drinks fuel and is inefficient 😮
Your question might be why you should not buy any e Klass 😂
And why go premium (old?) car when you can't afford comfort features?
Cheaper car with more features is smarter 😅
Why this look like it was made 10 years ago
......oh.....and the carbon build up on the valves on this DI engine. Another expensive repair / service. It all adds up !
e350 here. Don't bother, it's an absolute lemon.
Care to elaborate, I'm considering a E350 CDI.
135k miles base sedan with AMG sport package....no issues, running strong!
Leaky class.
W212🤢
You need to know not to buy a german car that old
