It's amazing to me how difficult running is when you begin doing it, no matter what shape you're in. And how quickly you pick it up if you keep at it. In June 2020 I switched from doing 60 min of fairly high cardio on a daily basis to running, and I was beat after about 90 seconds. 6 weeks later I was running 3 miles straight over 25 min. Now I'm doing 8 miles in just under an hour, 4 days a week. Age 46 / 195lbs.
@@rudykreutz3881 I put an 8-week program on my watch that started with alternate running/walking for 90s a clip. Gradually the run intervals got longer, and walk intervals were more spaced out and shorter. I was done with it after 6 weeks and went on from there. Good luck and take care!

Nice job guys. I'm 37, but when I was in college I ran division 2 cross country and track. Peaked at 90 miles/week for training, 15 miles being the longest runs. If I can throw a few cents of advice at you.... Hudson - with your injuries, it's a big deal that you train on soft ground as much as possible. It really makes a difference! I really hope you come to enjoy running as much as I do, I started out as an average Joe who gasped for breath after running a block and after four years of running, I can run 13 miles without any trouble and 26 miles at 4.5h, but I'm setting my sights on a 4h run this year.
Former NCAA runner here. I was always big for my sport. When I was a 100 mile a week training and vegan eating athlete I was still 172 (6'0"). I got up to a 15:37 5k which is ok for NCAA but nothing special. I competed into my mid 30s and then, while I never stopped running, I started lifting heavy. Now I am 228 and stronger than I've ever been. But, last timed mile I ran (last November)? 5:13.
The dreadmill is more than just a controlled environment. You aren’t actually pushing your body forward. You’re legs just need to keep up with that belt while your body is stationary. That reduces the difficulty more than the other things I believe.
Bro, that road had curves too, maybe fear of oncoming traffic, it looked cold, hard concrete, the energy deficit between treadmill jumping up and down and actually propelling yourself forward on an open road. In my opinion Hudson killed it,by probably 20 seconds.
I disagree if you use a quality treadmill. My times are very similar between treadmill and street. I've run treadmill all winter and have no problem transitioning to the street in spring at the same pace.
Didn't start running seriously until my mid 30s. I'm 41 now and while I wouldn't call myself a Buff Dude like you guys, I do lift a lot and I currently weigh 190 at 6'1". For the life of me I couldn't get under a 7 minute mile until I did what you guys did and got my running mechanics analyzed and then fitted for a proper shoe. Now I can do 6 minute miles (not easily though lol). My record is 5:34.
Congrats Hudson! That is a huge accomplishment for sure. The best time I did was in my PE class and it was a 7:30 mile. My goal is to eventually get to a 5 minute mile. Like you said in your video, small steps go on to make huge changes. Keep up the awesome work!
These hyperlapses are way too cool! The last bit, reminded me of when you look out the window as a kid and imagine this superfast (buff) dude running alongside.
When I was 24 and 70 pounds lighter, I could do a 5 minute mile. 13 years later, I'm starting to work at just being able to do a light jog without losing my breath. This video is some helpful motivation!
I just recently ran 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in about 7 minutes and I was pretty happy with myself lol. Heart rate was 180 at the end. I'm a 350 lbs "strength athlete" (i.e. fat guy who lifts) -- glad I didn't break my ankles!
@@El_Cuervo404 Hey cheers mate! I've been lucky, as I've never had any ankle injuries in my life. As I understand it, ankles have a pretty high reinjury risk once you've broken and/or sprained them enough during your life. For us big guys, a high impact activity like running might not be great in the long run (no pun intended). Riding a bike or swimming is much better for our joint health, so don't worry too much if your ankles seize up from running. I'm no expert, but I'd say similar health benefits can be obtained from rowing, swimming and cycling without the risk of causing ankle pain or injury. I was pretty much dead towards the end of my run (or sloppy jog), and I don't think my ankles can take active running either until I lose a few pounds and condition myself to it. I'll definitely try and keep my cardio up from now on, but I'll probably stick to low impact alternatives. I felt a little pain in my ankles the day after, but nothing crazy -- just enough to let me know to take it easy, heh.
Great video and happy you guys are running and expanding your horizons. Only a single thing I might add is that doing it on the treadmill makes it a lot easier not only because of the factors you mentioned but also since you just need much less forward force than outside since the backward movement helps you get momentum to carry over your leg. So times are most likely closer in reality.
Hudson, if you shift over to the treadmill you might actually get the 6 minute now. The treadmill setting the pace, zero elevation changes, no wind. These make a substantial difference. I bet if you did a follow up video with Brandon running the same course you just did that he would finish somewhere over 6 minutes.
Buff dudes are heavy! And we are proud of it. Impressive work guys! My mile record was 8 min and 25 seconds. Maybe I should aim for 6 as well 😏 STAY BUFF!!!!
great video.. buying a cushion shoe is unfortunately a fallacy as it ends up weakening your body. resistance = strength. I switched to minimalist shoes gradually and gained a 60% increase in my lower body strength. which is supported by running studies. having a zero drop, low stack height and a wide toe box massively improves your bodies strength and decreases the risk of injury. anyway that's just my experience. love the channel!
I'm a similar weight and height (I wish I was as buff) but started running in earnest again about 6 months. Started doing 3 to 5km at like 6:30 mins. Rapidly was under 6 minutes and now regularly about the 5 minute Km mark. PB 10km of 52:02 mins. Stick to it, that runners high feels so good and actually motivates me more in the gym. Keep up the good work, love the content and most importantly...BUFF DUDES!
So awesome guys! Keep after it! Cardiovascular health is as important as strength, if not more, so keep after it! You guys are amazing and we all love and appreciate you and the content!
I loved the production in this video! the hyperlapse at the end (the running felt so smooth) but especially the mini 3D map. And heck, the scenery was unbelievably cool! Congrats, Dudes, for making so much progress. You are truly an inspiration to us. Stay buff!💪🏻
Been running for years. Got my first pair of Brooks for Christmas. I'll never wear another brand. I'm 47, and they keep ankle and knee pain down to almost nothing!!! Sooo supportive and comfortable.
If you wanted to do the run on a 'mill you really should've done the initial test on one also. Comparing the two is not really equal (kind of like free weights vs machine). Still a nice job though. :-)
I haven't had time to watch buff dudes because I was always so busy with life. Now I got a lot of videos to watch, this makes me so happy! This is a cool video 4:57 nostalgic Sorry this is so long, I've gotten buff only because I watched your videos for such a long time, the golden 5 are the way to go. Hope you guys are doing good
I think their times would have been more on par with each other had they both ran the same terrain, I find treadmills easier because you are pacing yourself to reach that 6 minute mile exactly. It takes a lot of training to know how to pace yourself without the help of a treadmill going at an exact speed. Hats off to the both of you.
Solid work 👊 I ran a 05:15 mile last week at 103kg/227lbs, and have set myself a goal of a sub 5min mile at a minimum of 100kg/220lbs bodyweight 💪 Has to be solo also, no assistance from pacers.
You've inspired me to get back into cardio. I've been weight lifting for awhile now but been avoiding cardio like the plague. Going to buy running shoes and get on a treadmill tonight for as long as I can, even if that's only a minute or two lol
I started running 5-8 miles daily 2 years ago. Weighting In at 235lbs at that time, I’m now 32 years old 175lbs still running 5 miles daily. I don’t run to lose weight but to stay healthy. Btw I’ve been watching your videos for years now and thank you guys for keeping it real and helping all of us stay BUFF!!!!
@@T94869 my mind doesn’t tell me that anymore, it’s all in mentally. Start off slow, walk a mile then jog a mile. Afterward a mile will be nothing. You got this!!
For anyone that feels as though they are to heavy to run... Start small. I was 334 and had all kinds of health problems start popping up at age 33! It all started with a three mile walk and I slowly progressed to my first marathon at 240 pounds. Get it! 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
What was your marathon time if you don't mind me asking? Or also, what is your half marathon time, and what weight were you when you ran? I am currently 235lbs, 6ft tall, age 28, and half maratho time forr me is 3hrs : 10 mins; Think i can do wayy better in that regard
Smith Rock has some of the best running trails! My brother and I would run it every Christmas Day when we would visit our parents. Beautiful scenery for some hard work.
I'm 240-250 and the best I've ever done was a 7m mi in HS at the end of my first weight loss endeavour. I respect the growth at all angles, those goals are what keep us moving. A mile a day before strength training AND after is My go to. The extra blood flow is what makes it for me, and I'm a heater. Respect to all body forms, find what works for you.
Props. I got down to 254 this past fall. Ran a 7:15 mile. Keep in mind I also have a hip replacement and drink alcohol 3 times a week. That 7:15 was HARD. Can't even imagine getting under 6:30. Once again, Kudos to you two.
Nice improvement. My advice to the Buff Dudes: find a track. A track is the standard way to do this. Local high schools often have them open to the public and they tend to all be a consistent distance (400m). You'll get no lip about treadmills not counting, elevation won't be a problem, and it's super convenient to track progress. (200m splits need to be 45 if you ignore the extra 9m for a mile, and some standard 400m tracks have the mile start line labeled to give you that 1609 meters for a true mile.)
And the tread deck on a treadmill gives a little spring back. Still. Good job. Do this more often you’ll get a great afterburn and runner’s high which is almost euphoric.
I cant recommend Brooks shoes enough. Started running a couple years ago after not running for YEARS, and my knees and ankles were wrecked. Went to a Brooks store, got tested and fitted, bought up a pair of gray Ghost 13's, and literally that day i shaved a minute off my mile time. It's like walking/running on clouds haha, for real
So inspiring!! I am pretty old to run that fast, and as a 64 year old veteran who is about 100lbs overweight, I recently went back to the gym. About 3 years ago, I had been working out and had lost some weight but had a freak (non-workout related) accident where I shattered my kneecap and detached my patellar tendon. After some family tragedies, loss of employment and the pandemic, I am now back to trying to get back into shape and be healthy again. This time I decided to take a personalized diet plan from NextLevel Diet, and even hire a personal trainer to make sure I don't cause injuries to my 64 year old body with all my limitations from past accidents and age. My trainer and I are focusing on strength training to help with injury prevention and prevent osteoporosis (which runs in my family) and help with arthritis and balance. It has been about a month and I am already feeling so much stronger!!😎😎
Being taller must help as your strides look about half the rate I have to do at 5' 6"... it feels like a sprint to me!!! But great work guys 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I'm currently 225lbs and training for more marathons and ultramarathons this year. Being heavy and going long distances is a war of attrition and nutrition. I've never trained for a fast mile and this has inspired me to give it a go. I did wince a little when you took those lovely new road shoes out on a trail!!
My subscription to this channel was beyond my working out obsession back in time i knew i was gonna stop hitting the gym eventually but watching some buff acttion will help me to stay on that path. And it did im now 4 months daily gym
From a runner myself it’s awesome to see you guys go after it! I’m a runner trying to be a buff dude!! It’s awesome continue to do it! Stay consistent and run the mile you’re in! 🤝😈
Amazing job Buff dudes! i really like how you guys are trying out different things besides strength training. Last year when the gyms closed I dicided to run and cut some weight after not doing any cardio for 5 years. I started to love running. A few moths later I ran a half marathon weighing 227 (I came down from 245) and after that dicided I was doing a 1/4 triathlon. I lost some more weight, went down to 213 and finished my triathlon in 2:35 hour. I never thought I would be doing this but anything is possible if you stay consistend!
I can't jog it, but I can go over 5 miles in less than half an hour on my bicycle. But it's like my favourite thing to do at the moment so, riding comes easy. Btw that scenery where you were jogging the 6+miles was absolutely beautiful
I'm just impressed you ran Misery Ridge. I've hiked it dozens of times, never tried running it because of that back section by Monkey Face. Y'all are beasts.
This was motivating. I haven’t ran in years, and at 220 I just looked at running as an activity of the past. I think I’ll look into pounding the pavement again soon.
Man I wanna relax and enjoy this vid but the edit of it all is just TOO GOOD to ignore. The B roll! The establishing shots! The Google maps feature! I love it all!
Thank you! We always really appreciate when someone notices the editing. It's one of our favorite aspects of running the channel! Glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Love you guys! I lift and run... You can absolutely do both. Sure, it's incredibly difficult to excel at one or the other - especially distance running - but it's definitely possible. Love to see you guys doing something like this. Keep up the awesome work!
Love that you guys did this! Trying to get back into running myself. I’d love to see a video on how you guys are changing your diets now that you’re adding running in addition to weight training.
In '83, the LA County Sheriff's Dept PT test was: #1-20 pull ups. #2-60 pushups in 2 mins. #3-75 situps in 2 mins. #4-110yd sprint in 30 sec. And 1 1/2 mile run in 10 mins.
You guys are awesome and have been a consistent source of motivation for me during my fitness journey for nearly ten years now, so thankyou both 💪👑👑. And we better see Hudson get that 6min mile!
Brandon, you need to coach your neighbor in the back of the gym. He needs some Buff Dude wisdom. Glad to see running getting some love on this channel! I have to keep up with running for the military, otherwise I would just row! You guys should try a cardio challenge, maybe go head to head on the Jacobs Ladder with Buff Dad.
Another great video! You guys are seriously impressive and keep me (and probably a lot of others) motivated in my own fitness journey. Keep up the great work
We would love to. Had a chance to do one at a FitExpo a few years back and it was a lot of fun. We need to do another. And thank you for following us for so long! Although we didn't start the channel until 2012. 💪😄
Yeah guys...Smith Rock is the best outdoor venue in C.O. for interval runs and inclined work. The view at the top is a reward. Working at Costco...I find the best treadmill is across the street at Pilot Butte. Sprint work the trail and recover eccentrics on the road and repeat. Stay Buff..Stay Frosty!
I see loads of challenges UA-cam makers attempt for a day, and these don't really interest me. Buff Dudes routinely take on challenges that will test them over longer periods of time and challenges that will test their pride. I really respect seeing resistance training focused athletes take on running, or anything that they're not auto good at. There's a reason you both have remained such strong guys in the UA-cam scene, there's real integrity and goodwill in your videos.
Just picked up the Buff Dude cutting book, love your channel and been binging it since first discovering. I'm a 2 weeks in and the scale is up and down but more importantly I can see the body changes. Really encouraging!
Scenery looked like BC in Canada almost. I always found running to be the hardest thing to stick to and enjoy. I like lifting. Luckily lifting still helps your heart.
I really find this amazing and inspiring. I'm only 130 lbs but my current time is 6.2 minutes (some uphill and downhill). Feeling pumped to start running again.
Those time lapses were incredible... Good job, guys. This is making me wanna get out and find my mile time, too. It's been a long time since I've timed it and I'm a bit nervous.

@Leonardo I am again. I was lacto ovo for several years though.
The dreadmill is more than just a controlled environment. You aren’t actually pushing your body forward. You’re legs just need to keep up with that belt while your body is stationary. That reduces the difficulty more than the other things I believe.
That running time lapse at 15:07 is awesome. The environment is flying by but Hudson's full stride is preserved.
Almost looks like something in a stop motion animation or music video
I did 5:00 on a treadmill @ 240 but could not replicate on the track even close. Treadmills are very deceiving.
yeah I think Hudsons run might have been faster than Brandon’s if Brandon would have ran it outside too.
It's so different. I think the treadmill run is not fair in that video.
Bro, that road had curves too, maybe fear of oncoming traffic, it looked cold, hard concrete, the energy deficit between treadmill jumping up and down and actually propelling yourself forward on an open road. In my opinion Hudson killed it,by probably 20 seconds.
Motorized treadmills do some of the work for you. Non motorized treadmills will be much closer to running outdoors.
I hate running, but lately I’ve been walking like crazy. Can’t say enough how much that’s helped my weight loss goals.
The treadmill takes time to accelerate you have to run about 6:20 to do a real 6 minute mile
These hyperlapses are way too cool! The last bit, reminded me of when you look out the window as a kid and imagine this superfast (buff) dude running alongside.
I love running. I know most Buff Dudes don't, but I really do, and I know Hudson's got it in him.
Thank you! I'll make an update video as I progress.
Nice if I try that my ankles lock and they hurt
Amazing! You both did an awesome job! 💪💪
I just signed up for my first ever 5K fun run so this video is perfectly timed!! 🥰
I haven't had time to watch buff dudes because I was always so busy with life. Now I got a lot of videos to watch, this makes me so happy! This is a cool video
4:57 nostalgic
Sorry this is so long, I've gotten buff only because I watched your videos for such a long time, the golden 5 are the way to go. Hope you guys are doing good
Love the scenery Buff Dudes! Rock climbing, or jogging pretty sweet! The sunshine is gorgeous! Such a beautiful sight! Be safe Brandon and Hudson
I've been running in Brooks shoes for many many years. They are the only shoes I will ever run in.
Brooks is an amazing brand it is the best running shoe I've used so far, it makes me run smarter not harder.
Solid work 👊 I ran a 05:15 mile last week at 103kg/227lbs, and have set myself a goal of a sub 5min mile at a minimum of 100kg/220lbs bodyweight 💪 Has to be solo also, no assistance from pacers.
Thats pretty damn impressive! im 225 aswell. No excuses I guess!
@@Bjorn_R thanks mate. I’m both blessed & cursed with long/lean runners legs 😁 Get after it 👊
You've inspired me to get back into cardio. I've been weight lifting for awhile now but been avoiding cardio like the plague. Going to buy running shoes and get on a treadmill tonight for as long as I can, even if that's only a minute or two lol
That six mile run looked absolutely stunning - wish there was somewhere like that near me!
How do you keep running when your mind is telling you to stop
When I stopped running I really felt it at the squat rack, felt like I was gasping for air more in between sets.
I live like 20mins away from Smith, so blessed to have those trails in our backyard
This honestly inspired me jog around the block after 4 years on nit regularly working.. will go again tomorrow! Thanks Buff Dudes!💪
That canyon trailrun looks awesome! I can't wait for saturday to do my weekly trailrun in the woods! Let's hope for some nice sun. YEAH! 💪🏻
You guys are always an inspiration! I recently started running 1 mile every week and trying to get better!
Great work, old man
@@rasalresid9147 thanks
Amazing, you're going to make it! Be as consistent as you can.
Thank you for being honest and saying this is an ad opposed to every other social media influencer that just lies about it.
I’ve never run a 6 minute mile, you’ve inspired me! 💪🏼
I needed this video. I need to step my running game up!
This was such a sick video for so many reasons. Keep grinding boys, love to see new goals!!!!!!
Miss you Buff dudes, you are my motivation for training. Don't stop making videos. Thank you
I can't jog it, but I can go over 5 miles in less than half an hour on my bicycle. But it's like my favourite thing to do at the moment so, riding comes easy.
Btw that scenery where you were jogging the 6+miles was absolutely beautiful
cycling is way better than running or walking
@@sourikray1997 Agree honestly. I used to jog all the time, and I've walked everywhere all my life but cycling is just way more enjoyable honestly
Thanks C.T. It's a place called Smith Rocks. Definitely a beautiful place to run!
@@buffdudes Thanks for response dudes! I'll have to visit it one day, it was really beautiful
@@c.t.1893 Same here get the cardio without any aches
I'm just impressed you ran Misery Ridge. I've hiked it dozens of times, never tried running it because of that back section by Monkey Face. Y'all are beasts.
I can see him doing it under 7 mins
This was motivating. I haven’t ran in years, and at 220 I just looked at running as an activity of the past. I think I’ll look into pounding the pavement again soon.
As a run goes that's some pretty epic scenery!
@@hudsonpro YES!! Keep going it looks better and better every video!!
I love brooks, I’ve had the same pair of their cascadia 11 trail runners for the last 6 years and they are still holding up.
WOW what an amazing place to run in! Keep rocking guys
One of your best videos yet Dudes! I’ve been curious about how you guys handle cardio for years. Great job as always 💪
When I trained for football, I was around 265lbs, 6'5" and I ran a 6 minute 35 second mile which wasn't bad for my size.
In '83, the LA County Sheriff's Dept PT test was: #1-20 pull ups. #2-60 pushups in 2 mins. #3-75 situps in 2 mins. #4-110yd sprint in 30 sec. And 1 1/2 mile run in 10 mins.
Love seeing you guys get into running, I love running and am going to up the running for my summer cut in about a month or so
Looking forward to cleaning up my knee injury and getting back to running. Been following you both for years and have a lot of gains to thank you for.
Loved this video!!! I love Brooks so it's nice seeing how good their service is.
Treadmill is pulling/hamstrings and non-treadmill is a push/quads
You guys are awesome and have been a consistent source of motivation for me during my fitness journey for nearly ten years now, so thankyou both 💪👑👑. And we better see Hudson get that 6min mile!
Thank you for the kind words, Mako. I'll try my best!
Keep up the great work
would you guys ever do a meet and greet with your fans, ive been watching your content since 2010 and you guys just seem so awesome!
HELL YEAH boss! Super inspiring. I currently run a 8 minute mile and I'm gonna follow these tips and get there! Gotta break these Army standards!
Such a great video especially for us in east coast as warmer weather is coming it’s time to run boys !
Hudson's final run transition run was super cool!!! 😃😃😍
8:58 damn this shot goes hard
Along with everything else lol
Keep at it buff bros you can do it! 💯💯💪
Epic video dudes ! Loved this & you guys conquered ! 6 & 6:40 is pretty good dudes from where y'all started
Damn what a beautiful place to run..epic !
Nice work! 220lbs, 48 years and 5:13 here 😁 Looking for sub 5 this year 💪
Those time lapses were incredible...
Good job, guys. This is making me wanna get out and find my mile time, too. It's been a long time since I've timed it and I'm a bit nervous.
Congratulations on your 6:40 mile, really excellent work.
