I am a 55 years old kid. I have made bird houses out of many things...tin cans, plastic bottles, mild cartoons, you name it. Making a wooden bird house on my own, from start to finish, is on my bucket list. I love the idea of providing shelter to a wild creature, while so many habitats are disappearing daily. I hope I am successful at it. Thank you!
EXCELLENT! I am an old-school (79) woodwork -lover, a few power tools, storage shed full of rusty old tools and simply exhausted with these guys with their drill presses, routers, blah, blah, blah . I just wanted to build some simple structures for my many feathered friends. You just moved to the top of this old man's list! Thank you for a common sense approach to this project! Good show!
Best birdhouse video ever. Simple, easy to understand, practical, resourceful, cheap, doesn't require special tools (even using the back of the saw as a straight edge!), sturdy, nice looking and most importantly - birds love it!
Great tutorial. Best, simplest bird house project I've found. $13 piece of pine at 1x6x8. I have another 4ft long piece left over to build a second one someday. 🤙
Cheers for this, I've been looking for "building bird houses youtube" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Daniliana Birdfly Babar - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my brother in law got excellent results with it.
Winner of a video, I have been researching "plans birdhouse" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Daniliana Birdfly Babar - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my neighbour got amazing results with it.
I'm not an expert, but I'd like to pass along a couple of things I've read. The hole size will determine the type of bird that will want to make a nest there, so some research may be needed. Also, I've read that it's wrong to include something for a bird to stand on. A bigger bird can land, poke its head inside, and hurt the little ones.
I have looked at many different designs...this Bird House is simple ..superb...and the guy presenting this does an excellent job. Richard Adams' Wildlife Guide' Bulgaria.
Finally a video that teaches an actually simple way to build a bird house!! Thanks for sharing!! YT is filled with misleading video titles such as ``a simple way to build a bird house!!`` and when you click on those videos you see the guy using thousands of dollars worth of equipment, such as power saws and other wood cutting machinery. I`m like:``Dude, that is NOT simple at all !! Where am I supposed to find expensive machinery like that to build my freaking bird house!!``
Our birds recently lost their house when the post it was connected to fell and disintigrated They've been looking for it so I'm going to make them a new one using this. Thank you! The birds thank you too!
You make it look easy! I never picked up a hammer in my life and thanks for this video, I will get on it so glad It’s step by step for me to do. Thank u
The kids and I had a ton of fun building this birdhouse. We are super novices, so the simplicity of the construction was great. It's not really a complaint, but just thought I'd mention that the most folks don't have the special attachment you need to drill large holes -- I certainly didn't -- so that is one small obstacle to getting this project done right. On the whole, a great video and very well-presented!
You know what I see people complaining on what the bird house looks which I think is really rude I love the bird house and it’s and easy for the children thank you
Lisa Jones .....I'll build you a beautiful Blue bird house Lisa....and the kids will love it..this guy has no experience whatsoever. ..don't buy stuff like this...even though you saw it on UA-cam.
The look is not important. As a carpenter for a living I have made all kinds of things for movie and television sets aswell as home installations, from the roughest of work to the finest. The number one thing is to enjoy whatever it is that you're doing as much as possible. I thought of pointers throughout the video but that comes from experience and tool use. People who have that who look down on others who dont is pretty low in my books
Thanks for posting this. I'm going to try this. It looks very easy and fun. Going to get my two kids to help me. I will post an update and let you know how it turns out.
As a woodworker I could point out all the things done wrong and how bad this looks but that is not necessary. This is a simple plan for anyone to do with basic tools to get kids involved. Great job posting this up.
I just made this house and I have only basic carpentry skills. It came out pretty good! The only thing I would recommend different is to use ONLY screws. The nails tend to back out. Thanks for sharing. Good video!
Thank you SO SO much - I knew there was an easy way! I've read the hole should be 6" from the bottom so I'll just increase the height and put a "ladder" inside. I'm going to make LOTS of these :)
what i like about that video is: you can do this project with minimum tools...not everyone has all those very expensive and fancy tools. Thumbs Up !!! RCexperimental
I just build one from your "design" slightly different because of my tools and the material available. My bird house will not earn any prizes for workmanship, but I'm very pleased with it. Now I'm just waiting for the birds to find it and move in :) Thanks for sharing!
Good call on the hinge for the top. The first one would take longer, but once you've got the idea down you could easily knock off one of these in 5 mins!
We people who are pointing out the design flaws are not trying to be negative-- we want birdhouses constructed that will be used (not ignored) and that will not allow predator species to kill the baby birds. I think the overall design here is great-- fast and cheap is good because then you can make a lot of them and the birds don't need fancy. But the dimensions (height and hole size) need a few tweaks to make it secure for the birds.
I like that it's quick to make. It is like a great basic house. The way I look at it is, I can make it as shown or with ingenuity I can add something so it can be used in a different way, like how it is mounted! I am going to make it with a long back so I can mount it on a post or a tree with screws to nice it later. I like these screws for the top idea! I might make it so the top is hinged so that I can just lift it to clean.
Hey i just love bird houses any styles i made 2 useing milk boxes and they came out great my next project is 2 make out of cardboard and then on 2 wooden boards thank u 4 showing yr craft it helps people like me alot who realy dont know much but is still wiling 2 learn
What a great lockdown project :) If you're looking for another activity my wife made some free coloring pages from a book she illustrated. Here's a link: www.everyfamilybook.com/fun-stuff Take care down there in NZ.
Not much wrong with this build.Just tweak the hole to the type of birds you are trying to attract, add some holes for drainage and ventilation and it's good to go.It might be a good idea to make the back of the box a few inches longer than the front as then you can then screw the box to a fence post or tree.....good job
Small innovation, that I've made was to only put 2 nails holding the front piece, both at the top. Instead of the two lower nails put 2 of those eye screws (like the one you put in the top), one at the front of the bottom piece and the other at the lower end of the front piece and then use a piece of wire to tie these together. The once a year all you need to do is remove the wire and the front piece will hinge out and you can then easily clean out the house with a scraper and close it again ready for the next nest.
@@RCexperimental Glad you think so and thank you for the design. I wanted to get some nesting boxes up and ready for the birds this year and your design is by far the easiest one I've come across.
Cool! Or, you could nail or screw in a small block of wood on the bottom piece to turn up or to the side to block the front, and turn it to the side to let the top swing open to clean it out and then swivel the block piece up again to stop the front part from opening again
I copied this from someone else's comment because its so CRITICAL! "one important detail is that the inner side with the hole must be rough or with shallow notches applied. Otherwise, chicks, as a rule, cannot cling to the smooth surface and get out of the hole. Accordingly, they remain inside and die. Tested in practice. On a metal inside, you can stick wooden sticks for clawing."
awsum vid bro,so easy to follow & to teach my grand children, plus i only have the basics of tools,& rough & rustic finish is what they would like so as to not get their expectations to be perfectionist but later on to improve their skills thanks heaps
A great vid , easy to follow ... one sugestion that the back board be a few inches longer so as to be able to fix it to a tree or post as birds dont like their nesting box to swing around in the wind ...
Very nice but you never put a nail in front of hole as bigger bird go on them and attact the chicks when they come up to the hole later looking for mom with food, The birds are fine with just the hole
Dude, you seem like a nice young guy, your birdhouse is nice and functional, it would be a fun project for the kids but I don't care how good anybody is with tools etc., but nobody can build a birdhouse in 5 minutes.
thank you for your video. I would like to suggest drainage holes on the bottom as well if you cut the back piece length wise on the board it can be cut longer. 5.5 x 15"? Just an estimate. Attach the back extending below and above the birdhouse so that it can be screwed to a fence post or tree trunk easily. (-;
While this video shows a very basic project it lacks several things. Not the best design.......no Vent holes, no Drainage holes, Perch not needed and wrong diameter if added. Hole size and placement is critical to attract a specific species, Heights need to be longer. Using these dimensions will allow predators to attack the chicks given the distance to a nest inside to the entrance hole. Kerfs on inside of front piece should be added to allow the chicks to climb out. Please research other Bird House plans before building one.
Man great video!!! This is really going to help my friend get a new job!!! He told me to check this video out, so here i am. Not gonna lie, i wanna try make my own birdhouse now. Nice one Sean boy. An again, great video, short an simple, just like myself ;)
Ideally, the roof would cover the end grain if the backing board, and also the backing board would be a bit higher than the sides to allow some ventilation up top. But still, the best bird house design by far.
A great project for beginners (have problem in sawing even straight) like me. I give 9 out of 10. My only question is whether there are practical problems of using thinner planks say 1/2 inch. Keep the easy projects like this coming.
Im always amazed by the birds that people don't want around (in this case, the video says, sparrows are too aggressive). I guess I don't know their negative behavior too well. I usually put out bird food or a bird house and am glad if some kind of bird eats the food or nests in the box.
I don't mean to be too harsh but it pains me to see anyone not take a few minutes to actually learn that bird houses should be built species specific. All actual bird houses as opposed to yard decoration need a specific hole size located a specific height from the floor, a specific foot print, drainage, ventilation, an easy way for clean out, mounting location (woods or field), mounting height, orientaton (facing East) and protection from predators.
Thank you so much for this video. I am a senior citizen female retired and I want to start building bird houses. All the videos I watched on youtube left me with big questions. I want to start out basic so I don't just give up and your video has me ready to go! On your video I only have one question and I am ready to head to home depot, lol. When you cut down the front piece are you making a straight line because in the video it looks like it is going to the side a bit . You said to cut that side piece that front piece the hole goes in down four inches.. Is it a straight line all the way down both the same measurement?. Thank you so much!
Hi Gail! Glad this video has helped :) The line for the front piece should be straight, but if it's a wee bit crooked it also won't be the end of the world. There are some other good points people have made in these comments, such as the size of the hole for the birds being a bit smaller than what I said in the video, and also not needing the nail.
+RCexperimental it went great. I agree with using the right tool for the right job but didn't follow that because I didn't want to buy a new saw , so our lines are a little uneven. She's painting the birdhouse now. Thanks for this easy to follow video.

Out of all the birdhouses I've sene this basic design is the most popular among the birds in my yard. This was great instruction, thanks!
Perfect! Great for people who have little or no experience building things and a fully equipped shop with power tools not required. Excellent job!
And yet my clumsy self ended up making a Pinterest type--nailed it! I will be trying it again. I watch this video over and over. Lol
NO Perches on birdhouses = Perches are for PREDATORS !!!!
bIRDS don"t need them !!!!!!!!!
Thank you so very much. I am so glad you mentioned being able to clean the house out. Awesome - perfect for me!

Thank you so much for this video. I am a senior citizen female retired and I want to start building bird houses. All the videos I watched on youtube left me with big questions. Hi Gail! Glad this video has helped :) The line for the front piece should be straight, but if it's a wee bit crooked it also won't be the end of the world. There are some other good points people have made in these comments, such as the size of the hole for the birds being a bit smaller than what I said in the video, and also not needing the nail.

Thank for the video of how to build a birdhouse.

A tiny wooden peg about 2" or slightly longer, will be good for the birds to stand on, instead of a nail.
