Using this plan for birdhouse building with my daughter today. Great that it's done using hand tools and hand power tools. Very thoughtful design for the birds. You rock. Thanks for this!
I had to go back into my history to find this video, thank you so much for making it so easy to build. Video spot on in every way. Well done and a thumbs up from me. Learned more on how to care for the birds.
Thank you for talking on your video. When I come across one without any talking or if it is speeded up then I usually give a 'Thumbs Down' and search for another one. I enjoyed yours. L. Woods, in Manitoba, Canada
I enjoy all your videos, with or without narration. Please keep them coming. I, too, am a woodworker, and appreciate your no-nonsense approach to your craft.
Glad to see you used metal hole guards to keep the squirrels from chewing in to eat the babies and destroy the box.. Most plans don't include that important feature. I use 1/4 hardware cloth / electro weld with a hole nipped out in it.
Woodchucks will probably prefer enlarging the entrance rather than making a new hole so your metal guard will protect the eggs also against them. You could also consider deepening the entrance by mounting a wooden square around it before screwing the metal guard. This will protect the nest against cats, martens and other 'pawed' predators. My bird house got 'modified' by a woodchuck within several months and now it has both additional layer of wood and a piece of metal around the entrance. :)
My dad has been down-sizing recently and gave me some tools that I havent had a ton of experience with (a big ol' shop drill press and hand plainer amongst them). Your video gave me insight on some awesome tips on great ways to put them to use on a similar bird house. Thanks, sir!
Another great video! I've enjoyed every format you've used, but definitely continue with the voice commentary. I wondered at first if this was a project for a park until I read the description. I look forward to your next video.
hey ,if anyone else is searching for build bird houses try Debuncar Amazing Aviary Aid (just google it ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
Terrific, thanks. First, thanks for doing good technical research on the birdhouse. I certainly don't want to hurt them and your video really helps that. Second, YES, on voiceover. The essential communicative power of video is in the use of eyes. Splitting the information ingress between ears and eyes is efficient. It allows either for more information in the same time space or a reiteration of vital information via two different media for better learning. Having to take my eyes from the action to read a caption drives me nuts! I panic that I'm missing something. I know it's in fashion now but...still...I KNOW what a table Saw sounds like. Great video! And great English!
Thank you for these lovely pointers! The birdhouse plan I downloaded didn't seem quite right, and looking at your video, I can see it wasn't. I'm going to make a few modifications and alter the plan accordingly for future builds. EDIT: I used a few bits of dowel stock to make a little ladder up the inside front of my bird house, to help the fledgelings out! :)
What a nice and useful video. I'm so glad you chose to use voice commentary, especially when your voice and diction are so clear. Text in a video distracts the viewer from the main activity, which is quite a loss, really. I liked each of your very valid explanations too. I'm going to build a bird house very soon, based on your video. Thanks for the inspiration.
Asiallinen video.
A well done voiced video. Now I'll hear you instead of me. LOL! I used to feed the birds but I have too many really good hunter cats. Not a good combination. Built feral cat hoses. I do miss the birds. Get a few brave or stupid Robins who take food out of cat dishes.
Under the roof add a drip edge by cutting a 1/8” groove across the board to prevent rain water from flowing into the birdhouse front by convection. Also you want to toughen the wood inside the house under the hole so the baby birds can get a foothold climbing up.
great video ! I like the idea of adding a predator gard , ive seen woodpeckers enter a nest and pull every chick out. it's sad but a reality out nature. but that seems like it would slow them down and maybe make it possible for mom to return in time to stop it. agian awesome video !👏👏👏
Great video. There are lots of poorly constructed birdhouses being made and sold. This has lots of good design points and is a very good birdhouse. I recommend two further design elements for a perfect birdhouse. The inside of the birdhouse entrance should be left rough so that the birds claws can get purchase, you did that in your video but did not mention it. I would also include a small gap at the top of the birdhouse where the roof joins the body, this will allow moisture and heat to escape.
I too have read about these features, but decided to only address the major features in this video. Going even further, the bottom ends of the walls could be cut at 45° angles to make water drip off faster and not soak in to the grain.
It is equally important to create "cleats" inside the house on the interior front wall beneath the bird entrance\exit. This will enable fledgelings to leave.
Very much how I build nesting houses, except I put the hinge screws at the bottom so the front swings out from the top. That way, if there are chicks or eggs in the box when you open it, they're less likely to fall out. I had that happen and changed the design.
B Farley I just save that for a chilly weather day ritual when the twigs are bare, the brown leaves swirl around my feet, my cheeks are red, and I dream of spring.
Hienoa! Extremely well made video! Not only that, it's an important video. It is a bit unfortunate that birdhouses is the typical "first project", as they have probably yielded in way too many death traps. :(
Great video, but i'm puzzled why, after you cut the angle for the pitch of the roof, did you cut another one, surely yo could just turn the next piece over and have exactly the same angle?
I found placing inward facing razor blades on the entrance slices the heads off intruder birds like magpies or crows very nice and its good to see mother bluetits feeding their young on the brains and eyeballs of said magpies and crows 😃😃❤️❤️
Viisikymmentä pönttöä on melkoinen tuotos, tuleeko useinkin tehtailtua moisia määriä? Kiitos videosta, tuo etuseinän saranointi on mainio juttu ja aion ottaa sen käyttöön.
Thanks for the feedback. I was a bit worried, as i had not used a microphone before. Hard to tell before hand what it will sound like in headphones vs. smartphone speakers for instance.
FinnCrafted don't worry. you are doing very well. i tried to do it myself in some videos too, but i have a bad accent, and sometimes i fall over my english vocabulary :D
Wow, I was thinking of making a bird house. Changed mind, maybe sometime in the future, where do birds find there natural birdhouse there aren't that many perfect hollowed out trees even in woods it's very random
Excellent video. I loved the idea of sloping the entrance hole to shed rain water. I would not have thought of that
Easily the highest quality build I have seen for such nest boxes. Strong work!
Best one ive seen so far!! the detail and simpllicity
Using this plan for birdhouse building with my daughter today. Great that it's done using hand tools and hand power tools. Very thoughtful design for the birds. You rock. Thanks for this!
The best video I have seen thus far. Planning to build my first birdhouse. Thanks for the excellent information.
- Thanx a multimillion for the info re: bird house building. It's invaluable.
Bird house looks great, great design and I like the reinforced entrance to keep the squirrels out.
thank you
Leads of extra information hear, it has been well thought out. Thank you
I had to go back into my history to find this video, thank you so much for making it so easy to build. Video spot on in every way. Well done and a thumbs up from me. Learned more on how to care for the birds.
Seeing a bird move in is so satisfying.
Wonderful work and thoughtful design. Exactly what I was looking for!
First video of yours I have watched. I prefer videos with voice-over. Good job.
Thanks for a great video, to the point, in easy steps, with explanations and done with everyday tools.
That saw is brilliant!
The best video on nest box instructions!!! Thank you!
very good design, appropriate dimensions and workmanship.
Amazing! It can be so fun to help our bird friends whose habitat is much threatened in Europe....
Thank you for talking on your video. When I come across one without any talking or if it is speeded up then I usually give a 'Thumbs Down' and search for another one. I enjoyed yours. L. Woods, in Manitoba, Canada
Wow, you put a lot of thought into this. Great job.
I enjoy all your videos, with or without narration. Please keep them coming. I, too, am a woodworker, and appreciate your no-nonsense approach to your craft.
Thanks for such great information. I'm gonna make one. Yippee! great blend of audio I enjoyed the tempo and vibe.
Tämä on hieno lintuhuoneen video.
Olen oppinut siitä paljon.
Kiitos.
This is a great birdhouse video.
I learned a lot from it.
Thanks.
First class bird house 👍👏👏🏴
Glad to see you used metal hole guards to keep the squirrels from chewing in to eat the babies and destroy the box.. Most plans don't include that important feature. I use 1/4 hardware cloth / electro weld with a hole nipped out in it.
This is new information to me. Thanks for sharing this.
good solid looking house. All woodworkers should make at least 3-4 of them
Woodchucks will probably prefer enlarging the entrance rather than making a new hole so your metal guard will protect the eggs also against them. BEST bird house building video ever. Thanks so much! I'm gonna go build a bunch! Superb tips and details.
You're welcome! Hope you get lots of inhabitants in your birdhouses.
That's a well thought-out yet simple design.

IDIOT

Great video! And great English!
Very good, very simple and I’m now going to make some your way. Thanks for posting 👍🏾👍🏾
Great video on how to make a FUNCTIONAL (not NICE) bird houss. Many thanks.

I agree. Reading distracts the viewer.
Thanks for this video, I was about to build a more basic version though now I'll be making this instead.
such a nice birdhouse, God bless you, man!
Best birdhouse video I have seen, thank you
Thankyou Finn. Great tips for my build.
Nice Project and well done! Thanks for the tips!
Wow, nice work!
And very useful too, thanks ;)
Lots of happy birds!
Best build and advise on the tube. Well done. :)
Tip…on the inside of the front panel, glue some twigs or small off cuts. This makes it much easier for the chicks to climb out when they fledge
You really get it done! great job
Great - very clear and gave me lots of ideas. Thank you.
Some fantastic tips there! Thanks a lot, man! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Very nicely done. Thank you for sharing.
Very nice build, is just missing a chamfer/bevel in the lower outsides cut to let the rain drip better
Great video the best design on UA-cam well done
Excellent tutorial. Thank you. 👌
that was a brilliant made bird house and a interesting video .
Happy you liked it!
Hey man, neat little tricks for keeping the wood more dry. Somethings i didn't know yet. Cool!
I like that predator guard!
Tip - You can also add table salt along with the wood glue to guarantee a stronger bind.
great bird house
Great simple design and construction feature tips. Going to make a couple of these. Thanks!
Its better with voice over. I find it easier to learn listening and watching someone than watching videos in pure silence.
Asiallinen video. :)
Very nice I will start on mine tomorrow
Great tutorial and I like the tips you shared! I'm looking forward to having some bluebirds this year.
Finn, when doing the sides(angle) surely If you flip the first piece, you already have the angle then cut the bottom to length
You can also check whether your local municipality would consider commissioning a couple (of hundred) birdhouses!
Just amazing. Makes me want to try make something as well. Thank you.
Lovely work. Thank you.
great video!
Thanks. This is great - but you forgot the wallpaper ;-). I wish you well.
A well done voiced video. Now I'll hear you instead of me. LOL! I used to feed the birds but I have too many really good hunter cats. Not a good combination. Built feral cat hoses. I do miss the birds. Get a few brave or stupid Robins who take food out of cat dishes.
Cats can be problematic sometimes.

Ottima la lamiera anti predazione . Like
Very nice work and good video !
Looks great
Nice one mate! :) Enjoyed the whole video, keep it up :)
U know its good when black beard projects comments
well thought out, good video!

👍
Хороший домик для воробья. Безопасный. Ничего лишнего.
Very much how I build nesting houses, except I put the hinge screws at the bottom so the front swings out from the top. That way, if there are chicks or eggs in the box when you open it, they're less likely to fall out. I had that happen and changed the design.
I just try to avoid opening the nest boxes during the breeding season.
B Farley I just save that for a chilly weather day ritual when the twigs are bare, the brown leaves swirl around my feet, my cheeks are red, and I dream of spring.
Outstanding
Hienoa! Extremely well made video! Not only that, it's an important video. It is a bit unfortunate that birdhouses is the typical "first project", as they have probably yielded in way too many death traps. :(
Kiitos JWAM! Also, I don't want to make 50 birdhouses too often, so I try to build them to last.
Great video, but i'm puzzled why, after you cut the angle for the pitch of the roof, did you cut another one, surely yo could just turn the next piece over and have exactly the same angle?
Your English is very good!
... makes me wanna jump up .. and go get some more tools ! .. ( a drill press , a bigger bit ,,, ... thank you ,, spot on ! ...
Great video , sorry about my lack of knowledge but how the guard is going to stop any woodpecker when the hole is there as before the guard ? Thanks 😊
I found placing inward facing razor blades on the entrance slices the heads off intruder birds like magpies or crows very nice and its good to see mother bluetits feeding their young on the brains and eyeballs of said magpies and crows 😃😃❤️❤️
Awesome...
Finn Can I ask , Is there any one good size for the entrance Hole for European birds ? Excellent Informative video, Thank You
How do I protect from cats sitting on top. Iv sloped it and overhang the front by 3 inches. How can I stop cats taking the babies
Viisikymmentä pönttöä on melkoinen tuotos, tuleeko useinkin tehtailtua moisia määriä? Kiitos videosta, tuo etuseinän saranointi on mainio juttu ja aion ottaa sen käyttöön.
Very very nice. How about house for chicadees in a cold environment thank you.
Perfect, thank you! perkele
I’m new - really new - I wasn’t sure of the purpose of the metal bit installed around the bird opening access...how is that useful? Thank you.
The voice-over is pretty nice. You speak with the right vocabulary and it is very clear to understand ;-). good job on your 51 birdhouses haha
Thanks for the feedback. I was a bit worried, as i had not used a microphone before. Hard to tell before hand what it will sound like in headphones vs. smartphone speakers for instance.
FinnCrafted
don't worry. you are doing very well. i tried to do it myself in some videos too, but i have a bad accent, and sometimes i fall over my english vocabulary :D
From Southwestern America: No problems here! You accent is fully developed for voice-over narration; go -ahead.
So, you're not using pressure treated wood, but you don't paint or seal them either? How often then do you have to replace your houses?
Wow, I was thinking of making a bird house. Changed mind, maybe sometime in the future, where do birds find there natural birdhouse there aren't that many perfect hollowed out trees even in woods it's very random
In the wild they will find caves and holes, the actual birdhouse provides shelter that the bird can detect.
I have spent months researching into constructing aviaries and found an awesome website at Aviary magic method (google it if you're interested)
