    Japan Karate Association
The JKA was founded in May, 1949. By 1955, the first headquarters dojo had been built at Yotsuya in Tokyo, and the first JKA Chairman had been appointed: Saigo Kichinosuke, member of the upper house of the Japanese Diet and grandson of Saigo Takamori, one of the greatest heroes of Meiji Japan. In 1956, the JKA set up the first-ever karate specialist instructor intern (kenshusei) training program at the headquarters dojo, and accepted its first round of trainees. This was the start of the finest karate instructor training program ever created, a program never matched or even approached by any other karate organisation. It is through this program that the JKA has built up its unique cadre of distinguished karate instructors, all full-time salaried professionals, whose numbers are consistently maintained at roughly twenty individuals.
On April 10, 1957, the JKA became a legal entity when Japans Ministry of Education (now Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, and Culture) officially recognized the JKA as an association of members for the promotion of karate and the spread and enrichment of actual karate practice. Twelve years later, another karate organisation was also given legal status, based not on membership but on contribution by an individual foundation, mainly for the purpose of arranging karate matches.
Roughly two weeks after official status was granted, Supreme Master Funakoshi passed away at the age of 89. After almost a decade of milestones, it was the end of an era. But the real growth of karate was yet to come.

May 1949 JKA formed under Supreme Master Funakoshi Gichin
Mar 20, 1955 First JKA headquarters dojo established at Yotsuya
Mar 22, 1955 Saigo Kichinosuke becomes first JKA Chairman
Apr 1, 1956 First ever karate specialist instructor training program established at headquarters dojo

Apr 10, 1957 JKA officially recognized by Japanese government; becomes legal entity

Apr 26, 1957 Supreme Master Funakoshi passes away (age 89)
The above covers the early years of the JKA (1949 - 1957)

I miss the old days. I've been a student of budo for 30 yrs. My teachers are old men now and I'm right behind them. This beautiful art they passed on to me I'm forever grateful. To my fellow Karateka...the old ways still live on in the ones that keep them alive. Osu

How many people practice shotokan in the world today? I mean, in the millions maybe? I've heard it's popular, just not sure how popular. And, is it considered a Japanese art, or from Okinawa?

Shotokan style of Karate has given me a good lot of confidence. Sometimes you can just fight by not fighting and that is the confidence you get practicing Shotokan. Love this style

Fight by not fight is silly Thought, Just don't think about fight at all, or Fighting without thinking about Fight has more peace rather than thinking silly about fight all the time.

Its so sad that Shotokan has become a sport for showing off more than a martial art i really love to train as the old ways even if it doesn't have a bright future or become famous because you won some gold middles just i want to go back to the roots to the beautiful shotokan

In summer 2008 I trained at the Tokyo Hombu pictured in the beginning of this video. At about the 2:00 minute mark are photos and video footage of Nishiyama Sensei, who I also had the honor to train with and earn my first three Dan levels under. One of his oldest and most dedicated students lives here Sensei Robert Fusaro and he has been teaching Shotokan in Minnesota for over 50 years. I have been training with him and Sensei Nina Chenault for the past 35 years and training all over the world has shown me the universal appeal and effectiveness of Shotokan karate.

@superlion72 My understanding of the tiger symbol in Shotokan is that Funakoshi, after a hard training session, would unwind by taking walks on Mount Toroh (sorry, I don't know the spelling), and the mountain looked like a Tiger's tail. On these walks he would enjoy the sound of the waving pines. It was relaxing to him. As I understand it, this is where we get the tiger symbol from, as well as the "waving pines" (shoto). I welcome any correction or addition to this.

Shotokan has many variations in the applications and techniques, that become it differente from the okinawa way. Longer and lower positions as well different ways to prepare and execute blocks and strikes make of shotokan a different style. I am shito ryu and I admire how Shotokan spread karate, and how influence many styles (Kyukushin, Wado Ryu, Jyoshimon, Taekwondo, Renbukai), for that all my respect.

"Shoto was Funakoshi’s pen name as a writer, meaning ‘pine waves’ and Kan means ‘school’ so those who trained at Funakoshi’s ‘school’ became known as the Shotokan."
    I stand corrected!

@SuperPluto10 Bro, my Sensei started at 18 years old and managed to become second in Europe.
He's a black belt at the moment, he learned BJJ and Shotokan Karate. Now he trains his MMA team.
In his MMA lessons he always trained us to use a long distance which is perfect in my opinion. If we get in a close distance we use grappling and If you'll ever have a street fight with no weapons you'll win 99 percent whitout a scratch because Shotokan trains lightning speed. It's an awesome martial art.

Awsome...respect to the legends always. Ive always said if you really gonna go far in karate sooner or later your gonna have to go to the source. The states can't really take you there but it could prepare you for that day that you can train in Japan and get real diploma with appropriate stamp piccture with proof of accreditation by the government of Japan that you have gone through the Real training past your 5 degree all the way to the 11th. same should hold true of if it was Korean karate or Chinese karate or Burmese Karate.. learn form the essence.

A question, must a karateka know all 26 Shotokan katas when testing for black belt?

This is basic karate at it s finest it's how you train your mind not the b s you see in tournaments or other types of competition you train long and hard even if you aren't at a dojo it's pure karate 😎

I appreciate your observation. I practice Uechi-ryu and I often run into that assumption that because karate utilizes strikes, it is somehow an attacking system. Karate, properly understand, is concerned with defense in the same way Aikido is, which generally does not use strikes in its approach. If karate kicks and punches have a proper target, it is the smallness of our hearts.

I studied under Mori Masataka sensei, here in JKA New York. I felt bad I when I missed Enoeda sensei's last seminar before he died. Watching this video makes you feel you're saying goodbye to some the senseis who have gone, as well as those who are at the twilight of their ages. Good Vid... OSSU!

    Origin:
Japanese, from shō 'right, true' + to 'way' + kan 'mansion' or "Hosue of the true way."

My greatest regret is that I have only one lifetime alloted to me to learn the martial arts; I would like another to learn and appreciate Shotokan Karate.
    Peace.

@aDiDasBiH .Infact it was The Movies in which Bruce Lee had inspired me to begin looking at Martial Arts.
I also study Aikido and Omori Ryu Iai.But it is always going to be Shotokan which keeps me so inspired today. And I soley study to enhance my personality and how I conduct myself in around people I come into contact. How long you been studying Wing Tsun.
