That sais all of it. (I don't know if used correctly the term weaponed but I think you understood me). And in my case, shotokan is even better because I am small, fast and powerfull but with no resistance and shotokan uses that power of karate that I can use for only one strike and I can use that long distances attacks of shotokan in order to balance my small size. Sotokan is perfect for me.

@@dawid31m funny thing, many years ago, in the building we did shotokan ,there were guys who trained kickboxing. We were young at that time ,we looked to the others style with interest . One day we decided to put the best one of us with the best fighter of them (not the master, just students) to have a fight. The kickboxer throw a highkick, our shotokan guy dodge it and just punch him verry hard in the chest, wich made him fall on his ass. I dont say shotokan is better,if that highkick didnt miss the target,it was a ko, but talk only things you know.
We learn sanbon and kihon kumite in Wado. It's an excellent way of perfecting timing and distancing. Kata is important of course but these other drills really help define how this martial art functions against an opponent.
I've been a student of shotokan karate for 20 years... Under my late dad sensei keinosuke enoeda.. It's often thought of as a miscellaneous art..but it is incredibly effective in the world of defence.. I hold a 2nd dan... Oss
It is not just the aspect of its extraordinary power and speed that makes it unique, but its discipline is the main point of difference with other styles such as Kyokushin.
Karate is a martial art and as any art, express the one who practice it, physically, mentally, psychologically. It is important, for me at least, to sustain the connection between spirituality and karate, not only for tradition purposes but mostly because karate IS spiritual. Highly spiritual from the beginning in Okinawa. The most spiritual martial art in my opinion and have to remain like this.
Yes indeed that is him, thank you Paul. the reason for asking is he looked familiar, i expected he is the guy from Black belt (the movie) and indeed it was him. I watched some JKA videos with him in them, and he is amazing. googling his name made me find way more videos i have never seen before :) Thanks again Paul
Excellent sparring, fighting and demonstrations. This was the type of training in went through. Now the caveat. I would like to see top Japanese fighters vs top Korean fighters with no rules for points. Just good fighting with the strategies for and how to defend against each others’ techniques and where to find the opponents weaknesses. And not have to worry about points but good clear obvious techniques. Please comment or show some good videos if they are out there. Respects.
You are correct. Karate as a point sparring, although can be useful to get students get comfortable with techniques is NOT such a good thing if the students think "yeah, this is ALL that Karate is about". Therefore, learning bunkai, especially in real time speed usually produce very favourable result. I learnt defence against double leg takedown from Pinan/Heian Nidan kata. Having said that thought, in some countries, Karate is really big as sport which doesn't help the image. But i luv Karate
I'm not having an argument here for arguments sake but you say point sparring is not what it's ALL about, which I agree. You mention bunkai and how it helps you against a double leg takedown. How many people in the street would go for a double leg takedown? Or even in competition? One may see it in competition but who would think in any fight situation "He's going to come at me with a double leg take down"? I can only imagine the defence you speak of is kiba dachi? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm interested to know what you're thinking
There are many truly gifted karateka in the world. These guys are so fast that most people wouldn't know what hit them before they even had a chance to react.
yeah,in some styles of shotokan karate and kyokushin karate in particular do not use any protection except for a groin cup, the main objective of this is to make the practioner street ready if the event of a street confrontation arises.
There are several methods of defending against takedown. If you study the Shuri-Te style Karate eg: Shorin-Ryu, Shotokan, Shito-Ryu ( Shito-Ryu isn't actually Shuri-Te but it contains Shuri-Te elements), you will notice that the deep low stance of zenkutsu-dachi is most commonly used. You must be from this stance when attempting to defend against takedown. Kyokushin tends to tand quite tall like Neko-Ashi dachi style or Muay Thai style, this way I found that defend agaisnt takedown very hard...
cont... also, normally people can see whether or not the dojo stresses on "racking up point" or actual combat prowess. One example Shotokan Karate fighter that's pretty good at Bunkai is Tatsuya Naka - shown in the video actually. I agree with one of your point that Karate doesn't have to point sparring, however this is usually the orientation of the school. There are quite aplenty Shotokan dojo that stress on "purity" of the art.

In addition, there is also mental aspect of Karate such as controlling adrenaline so people don't easily get scarred or frenzy in the slight confrontation.
cont... Shotokan version of pinan nidan is heian nidan. If Heian nidan isn't clear, try shito-ryu pinan nidan. the cue is HOW they move from zenkutsu-dachi to kiba dachi (horse stradle stance).
Machida is one of the biggest MMA fighters ever and he comes from Shotokan. It is never the style, it is always the artist. But the more styles he knows, the better he will be....
I compare other Asian arts with Okinawan/Japanese martial arts, and the other ones are noticeably missing kime, or focus, that sharp execution of technique that makes other arts look like dancing. Undescriminating people can say what they will, but I would not give a damn for Tae-Kwan-Do, or the Chinese arts, that slap at each other like the Three Stooges. I'll stick with a good reverse punch every time.
Well that can be good and bad, really. As Bruce Lee would say, "I don't fear the man who has practiced a thousand kicks once, I fear the man who practiced one kick a thousand times"
interesting, how to defend against the take down? I train kyokushin karate, but just watched the shotokan version of pinan nidan, but unfortunately can't see how to defend the takedown from this kata. With kyokushin also lately too much emphasis on tournaments and full contact fighting but in the organization where I train the focus on bunkai is coming back.
