Assassin's Creed Black Flag is now a whopping eleven years old, and there is a lot of talk about a Black Flag remake on the way too. Thats why I wanted to create this Assassin's Creed Black Flag Review in 2024, to play it again and see how well it holds up.

@@IronsideGeorge it’s on 13 out of 13. I didn’t really click with Edward, and I couldn’t get myself to liking the naval combat. I didn’t enjoy it in any other Assassin’s Creed game either, but at least in the other games it’s just a small part of the game, in Black Flag it’s the main thing. Rogue too, but Rogue had the puckle cannon which helped a lot imho and was shorter anyway, also Rogue’s story was a lot more interesting to me and I liked Shay a lot more. Then Black Flag also didn’t feel great in both its stealth and combat, combat was AC3’s but I felt less menacingly, and hardly ever could do a double counter kill which was a real shame given how common and cool they were in AC3, and stealth lacked ranged silent deadly weapons (basically one throwing knife only). The overabundance of seas didn’t help me liking the game either, and all the tailing missions got a bit boring as well, and naval tailing missions were even worse. I heard a lot about the final cutscene being great so I eventually did force myself through the game but I just wasn’t satisfied, the ending was disappointing, but maybe that is because I just couldn’t really care about the game anymore. I feel like the game would have been better off if they didn’t force the assassin stuff in it, after all even though he understood all he had done wrong in the end Edward wasn’t a character that fits the idea of the assassins, guns and cannons are all but “hide in plain sight”, the modern day story was the first one to be lacking, I think if they made it a full on pirates game it would’ve done a lot better.
It wasn’t the worst experience I’ve had with games, the antagonists were the best yet as a whole imo. The map was really gorgeous (at least the land was) and the setting is pretty interesting. I don’t think I had many glitches during my playthrough either. I guess it’s a 4-5 out of 10, so could’ve been worse, but sure should’ve been a lot better. It still stands as the only AC game I just couldn’t enjoy
I will defend Black Flag's tailing missions, because this is the game that got them right. In AC2-Rev, they are boring, the enemies will turn around and spot you on a dime. AC3 tried to improve the systems but made it more frustrating imo with the limitations of the eavesdrop circle and the incredibly quick reaction time you need. Black Flag perfects the tailing systems in a few ways. 1) your targets talk to each other, either developing the story further or just being entertaining. You don't tail in silence like those damn missions in AC2 where you tail a lone person for 5 minutes.
2) Parkour is incorporated into the intended tailing path, you rarely are required to tail from the ground and when you are, there are a plethora of bushes so it shouldn't be an issue. Just remember to always restock on sleep darts, they're essential for remaining undetected on the roofs.
I will say that the naval tailing is very boring, as you basically just play the mini-map as you avoid the yellow zones
Sincerely respect this comment. Whilst sometimes they’re a little longer than than they need to be, overall they’re “good” tailing missions. But, for me it’s the sheer volume of them. They make up 25% of all missions and it just feels like too much to me ✌️

I am replaying it right now. Even after all the GTA's, Horizons, Red Dead 2 etc, it still holds up extremely well, I'm having an absolute blast with it. Even the graphics held up after all these years. As a game, it just has an incredible flow to it, fighting, naval battles, treasure hunting, murder contracts, harpooning sharks, diving quests, really, never a dull moment. If you never played it, I can highly recommend it, probably the best ten bucks you'll ever spend!

I'm on my very first playthrough of Black Flag and I'm really enjoying it! I really wanted to play a pirate game and I wasn't going to play Skull and Bones. So glad I bought Black Flag, I love almost everything about it, just not a fan of all the "trail this guy" missions.

I whole heartedly 110% agree, it's a horrid game, black flags supercede's it in every possible way, I know alot of older games waaay better than the newer games, look at the environmental, cloud, fire and particle effects at red dead 2 compared to modern Interpretations, another game over 5 years old putting modern games to absolute shame
It was the first game I got with my PS4 at launch and I finally finished the story 11 years later. I didn't realize how close to the end I was and the ending was kind of a let down if I'm being honest outside of that short theater scene.
But finally completing this game and going back to it, I think at the time I got it I really didn't appreciate how good of a game it was. I have a PS5 but I still played it on my launch PS4 and the game was really beautiful and you are right the sound with headphones on really impressed me with its design and made me think I took the ps4's sound capabilities for granted.
Cmon! You really spent 11 years on a single game? I hope you did and then I will feel better about the amount of time I am taking with it.
@@jeffw.1854 on again off again, and there was a stretch of years where I didn’t touch it. Just so many distractions and it really didn’t hook me in. I got Unity and finished that before this game.
It took me a long time to touch this game. I played the ezio trilogy when I was younger but dropped it after revelation because AC3 didnt look like it added enough. I did get round to AC3 eventuality and its a pretty decent game. I found its polarising dlc to be a personal highlight.
Anyway one thing I really appreciate about blag flag is how dynamic the missions feel, the objectives are constantly changing with the story and its not the case of just doing 1 select objective per mission.
Remember playing ac 3 basically just a year after the best(in my opinion) pirates of the Caribbean movie after the game introduced the ship missions i couldn't stop playing that part and i hoped they would bring something more out of it so as soon as i heard about how the 4th game is headed that way i instantly checked the local game shop to see if they knew the exact release date and when it finally came out i was one of the first ones in my town to buy it

Though I think Black Flag had strong characters and an interesting story line, I thought the assassin side was quite weak, and it felt like the modern day storyline was rushed and they weren't quite sure how to progress since ending the Desmond story arc. Most people seem to prefer and really like the naval side, and I still occasionally boot it up to do a bit of pirating. From my perspective, as you said yes we got 2 games in 1, but it wasn't meshed together as well as it could have been. Though I still liked it better than 3.
Appreciate dude! Completely agree with you on the story side of things, which whilst great were Assassin lore lacking. I loved Pirating though, the overall gameplay was just so satisfying 🏴☠️
Haven’t played Skull and Bones but one thing I can for sure is that it doesn’t hold that glorified candle like AC IV Black Flag, I really love it and still do to this day because of the new naval battle features, I mean AC III did have naval battles as well but AC IV allows you to freely sail your ship to any destination you want while AC III only allows you to sail for missions
The Sea Atmosphere, The Wild Life Hunting, The Naval Combats, The Assassin Contracts, The Weaponry, The Song Shanties, The Exploration, The Main Story Missions, And Especially Edward James Kenway. This Is Why I Adore A.C IV: Black Flag The Most.
I Like Ezio Trilogy But I Love Black Flag.

When I first watched SOA I thought the Charlie Hunnam looks a lot like Edward
I like Charlie as well, but Matt Ryan actually gave his voice and likeness to the character. So if there's ever a movie, which I doubt given how awful the 2016 movie was, it should be him. 😁
I'm playing Odyssey now, I haven't beaten it yet. Same with Valhalla and origins.
None of them hold up to black flag, I am currently taking a break from those three to re-experience 4, the best thing about the game? Keeping your fleet. It helps soooo much early game.
I am on track to 100% it, on collectables, I have to go back through and 100% missions still.
Love this game. So much.
It is genuinely pretty great. I like the RPG 3 a lot but there's a feel to Black Flag which those games just don't have. Enjoy dude!

Funny, I just googled this and you made the video today. Probably a lot of people wondering how this game is compared to the recently released Skull and Bones based on the same concept.

Is it better to play it on console, or PC? Because i have always had issues with older AC games on PC. They just don't seem to run well, or have loads of bugs or issues with modern PCs running Windows 11.
When i plug in my headphones to the ps5 i can barely hear the dialogues in cutscenes. Everythign else seems fine. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I also just played and finished it for the first time.
Played it back then on ps3 and now replaying it on pc since a week, better in every point then new games nowadays
This game still does it all. Keeps all the good stuff from ac2 while adding new graphics, fun things to do in town that make it lively, and a very large open world with a good amount of enemies to encounter. Not to mention crafting upgrades like ac2 but actually based on materials u get. This game seriously deserves a remake
Just finished it again. Could be tweaked some, but looks Amazing on the PS5.
The ps5 version is a base ps4 version

I loved the tailing missions. It was hard but assassin was the name of the game. I wish there would be some more in the next titles
My first Assassin's Creed game, currently in the middle of it, and I am loving it so freaking much. But why are rooftops so heavily guarded even when I'm not in a restricted area? I didn't know it was a crime to run on rooftops.

Yeah they can be guarded sometimes - fun to boot them off and keep running though 😊
@@IronsideGeorge Well, I got syndicate for free from Epic Games, so maybe I'll play that. But I really want to play one of the classics. But I might not play any other Assassin's Creed for quite some time. I already have a bajillion games to get through.

I'm playing black flag on switch and it's so good....I ordered AC2. I beat it years ago when it came out. I honestly thought black flag wouldn't hold up, but it's awesome. So it made me wanna get 2. Probably get 3 again as well

I love this game and brought it a long time ago on steam. I remember buying the base game only but I recently downloaded the game after rhis vid and saw the DLC's automatically added and that has me worried.
Why would the DLC’s being automatically in have you worried? Free content!
I'm just worried if they'll think I used some kinda crack to get the dlc because I used a mod to solve the Kenway's fleet loading problem.

you can remove the fps cap on pc and set the game to 240hz

Desperately needs a remaster for console as image quality is pretty blurry and full of aliasing. And it remains 30 fps as with the other entries, which is honestly a problem mostly for Playstation as XBox at least runs most, except BF and Syndicate, at 60 fps boosted. However, they appear to be doing a Black Flag remake instead. I’d like to have both though. A remaster of the original and a remake as it would be a real shame for the original to fade into obscurity. Remakes never fully capture the vibe of the original so who knows how it will turn out.
It's a really bad optimised game and the PC port too, cyberpunk runs better.

I tried to play this game on pc and was encountered with countless issues, it wouldn’t launch if it wasn’t in compatibility mode and stuttered even when locked at 60 fps constantly. How did u fix these issues

Having the modern day storyline be so short is ALMOST perfect. Perfect would be not having a modern day section at all.
I really wanted to like it as a massive pirate fan, but its really just the same shallow ubisoft gameplay on a pretty caribbean theme
I don’t think I disagreed with any part of this review, the game is just an outstanding Assasins Creed game and will live fondly in my memory.

personally i like the how simple the combat is i don’t like how the new ac games combat is
It’s as I say, it is super enjoyable! Though to be honest I think the combat in most AC games is pretty easy to learn too, though I guess you have more options like abilities and heavy attack in the last four games. Either way, it’s awesome 😁
yeah for me if here are any main reasons for playing AC games is must be about being bad ass character doing whatever the fck i want around the lively open world in a great beautiful story with full of bad ass cutsceens . Why would i choose AC games for a great combat system when games like Dark Soul, God of War, Devil May Cry exist ? AC franchise never should be about combat focus.
I love this game. This is number 1 for me and I am thinking of playing it again now. AC Origins is #2 for me followed by Valhalla.

Damn tough one...I love Black Flag and Origins, imo these 2 games are on 1#. both Edward Kenway and Bayek are great characters and their stories. I was not a fan of Valhalla. Still have to get Odyssey.

It's still by far the best pirate game ever made, that goes without saying. But the tailing and timed missions, instant desync, hacking and climbing missions are absolutely horrible. Other than that it's possibly the best ac game alongside origins.
Just wait for remastered version.

TBH I think tailing missions should be a major component of AC games because I think it sounds like the most assassin-like thing to do.
That’s a really good point to be honest. I definitely think they should be a staple of any AC game, but I still think they were over used in Black Flag ✌️

Just bought it a week ago. Great game, only negative is Kenway's fleet doesn't load. So i'm missing on a part of the game.
All they have to do is remaster this game and so many people would flock to it including myself.

You will want to spend time on the ship, it is really well implemented and actually a lot of fun.
Basically an open world game. Some mission required to use the ship and some mission are on land. But the naval combat is the best part of this game.

No Assassin's Creed is that good..they try and make a realistic game but the A.I sucks and they become just collect a thons and repetitive gameplay. Average at best. The gameplay design is terribly outdated. The games look good tho....but the gameplay and immersion killing modern day , ruins most the games

It’s really good! I’m not entirely sure, but perhaps it could be that one of the games includes the two DLC’s, Liberation and Freedom Cry?
