Overall, Unity. I love rogue for the fact that not only do you get a ton of weapons, but the extra challenge of being hunted by assassins both in free-roam and the story makes it so fun.

The French Revolution is also the PERFECT setting for an AC game. It defines everything that the Brotherhood and Templars would be involved in. Lower class mobbing tyrants. The trailer also showed the true spirit of AC. Assassins hiding amongst the crowd, destroying gates and weakening defenses so the angry mob can take the credit and they can continue to hide in secret and just overall shaping history as it happens from the shadows.

Unity had everything: great characters, good plot ideas, great graphic and gameplay (once you fix the bugs), great city and open world, THE MOST PERFECT TIME PERIOD EVER SEEN FOR AN ASSASSIN’S CREED. How they managed to screw everything up with the most boring, uninspired, and predictable story ever is still an amazement 10 years later. They conpletelly wasted the setting and for what? A love story? This is supposed to be an historical game with sci fi elements. All the historical figures you could have interacted with instead of chasing Elise. All the historical events you could have been part of. Plus they made the ending of Rogue completelly pointless.

you can tell unity has real effort and soul put into it, ubisoft's devs poured their fucking hearts out to make a game based off their own culture and country, shame that the higher ups forced the game to come out before it could've been fully finished and polished, otherwise we'd just say "unity is the best ac game" rather than "unity is underrated", i wanna live in that world.

AC UNITY was a masterpiece when I played it back in 2020 and I still sing its praises to this day as the best of the 'classic' AC series before they became RPGs.
I know that the game's failures were due to a lot of AC fans (including critics and reviewers) bemoaning its incredibly buggy state at launch and its failure to deliver on some very optimistic feature promises, the fact that everyone was exhausted with classic AC's repetitive gameplay loop and the fact that the game didn't run decently and properly on any platform except the most high-spec'ed PCs of the time...but by 2020 nearly all of those issues had been addressed and when I played it, it was a mindblowing experience.
But here's something that I think encapsulates why AC UNITY is the last good game of the classic series and also why the design ethos behind AC is why ORIGINS is the only truly decent AC RPG game as well - both games are 'hand-built'.
AC UNITY's depiction of Revolutionary Paris is probably the series most deeply and accurately researched setting they've ever made. Having been to Paris and been a student of history, architecture and art history, I can say that the amount of detail and effort the team put into creating Paris of that era has NEVER BEEN SEEN SINCE in an AC game (with the possibly exception of ORIGINS). And you can tell, based on later entries in the series, that Paris in AC UNITY was built by hand, not procedurally generated. The whole city was built on maps from the era, many of the major locations and streets where built using paintings from the era, and the whole game's design ethos, art direction and aesthetic is accurate to French culture, French history, French architecture, French fashion and French aesthetic preferences. Which isn't surprising given Ubisoft's French influences as a corporation, naturally they wanted to do their own culture 'right' and they knocked it out of the park.
The hand-crafted, built from scratch, aspect of UNITY is why the parkour is so good, the animations are so seamless, the combat is so smooth and perfect and fun. It's a process of refinement driven by a desire to make something 'the best it could be' for - what arguably must have been - their greatest AC title they were ever likely going to make in a long time.
The game's crowd simulation is also jaw-dropping and actually makes the stealth - finally, after all these years - feel powerful and realistic. And yes - you are correct - no AC game since Unity has attempted this kind of crowd simulation. AC SYNDICATE's London was a ghost town, when in reality it should have been TRIPLE the amount of NPCs you see in UNITY. They seemed to have made a half-assed attempt at some crowd density in ORIGINS, but you see that by the time you get to ODYSSEY they dialed it back and when you get to VALHALLA the population of the entirety of England seems to be around 1,000 people. The tiny pathetic crowds in AC games, post UNITY, are the most immersion breaking aspect for me and it SUCKS HARD because the maps keep getting bigger and bigger and they're full of fewer and fewer people and creatures.
Story - sure, I reckon that's very subjective. I know some people didn't like the characters. I personally did, but I can't argue that they're objectively great or anything. And UNITY - for me - does fumbled where the RPG games didn't: they put you in the middle of history, but if you don't know the history of the setting then all these ultra-famous figures are just meaningless NPC's. The story of UNITY doesn't do enough, sadly, to really convey the genuinely amazing and terrifying story of the French Revolution which actually would give your missions HUGE consequences historically and profound meaning. I think it drops the ball there - AC fans and gamers were very ready for the Discovery Tour version of AC; but Ubisoft didn't figure that one out for two more games.
I would love to see an AC UNITY remaster or even a Discovery Tour of the game because I think it would just round out the whole experience and make AC UNITY that rarest of things: a peak perfection moment of the video game artform; something that will never really age because everything is so carefully hand-crafted, hand-built and refined from a place of genuine passion and love.
I mean, shit, when Notre Dame burnt down, they got the lady who built the AC UNITY version of the cathedral to help in its reconstruction.
By contrast, SYNDICATE is the perfect example of a game that isn't hand-built and is emblematic of a company's "path of least resistance" in game design (that you see slowly infect ODYSSEY and completely destroy VALHALLA). We know more about 19th Century London than just about any historical city from that period in time. But SYNDICATE's 19th Century London is procedurally generated - it doesn't match ANY known map of the city, the different regions all have similar architecture, there's only about 3 dozen types of buildings and a handful of building textures repeated ad-nauseum (to the point where you actually find identical houses side by side in places). The city is a ghost town, none of the NPCs do any interested animations or interactions, hell characters in the game don't even remove their hats when they go indoors which is a major no-no in the time period. Because the city wasn't designed by hand, it was all procedurally generated and then tweaked where it needed to be in order to fit missions. The game is ugly, it feels like you're playing a game instead of time-travelling to a real place filled with real people, shit they didn't even design the rooftops in such a way that you could parkour properly -- a problem that UNITY saw and overcame by building the rooftops by hand.
UNITY and ORIGINS are reflections of a super-ambitious, hand-crafted, history-first, immersion-first, approach to game design that is clearly hard, expensive and time-consuming and something that Ubisoft immediately course-corrects by the next game through automation and doing things half-assed.

AC unity was hands down a great game even though i came late into the game when i got an xbox one and was blown away by what i saw. The city, the graphics, the parkour, the stealth was next level it was fun going around using the disguise ability in restricted areas to get close to someone or plan out attacks. Some might not agree but i thought the ai was more aware in this game then any other AC game, the way bandits would talk shit to you in public if they spot you made it a good excuse to blend in with the crowd like a true assassin and the Napoleon soldiers would react to you if you were doing something you're not suppose to and come towards you issuing a warning (most of the time in certain games they'd either ignore you or full on kill ya)

AC Unity was the last time Ubisoft tried to push the envelope in every department.
Real Time Global Illumination, The cloth physics on every character, the Hair Rendering, The facial rigs, the sub surface scattering, They developed a mesh clustering method ( akin to nanite in ue5) to push way more stuff ontu the screen, they had cloud shadows, and volumetrics that were affected by the sunlight, THE EYE TECH THEY DEVELOPED was lost until like last of us 2.. It was one of the PBR games, their animation system was complex and hard to work with but holly crap it paid off, its the perfect blend between ragdoll driven body physics and IK. Its basically the 2nd Crysis and even today can hold up to most games.
Small neat titbit to why the game still looks so.. unique and amazing. They did get PBR ( physically based rendering ) online until fairly late into development. Meaning the entire games materials ( normal, colour map, ao = material ) were built on the old pseudo PBR system games used back then, which is why older games had that slight hyperrealisticy crip comic look kinda thing. And AC Unity, is the perfect missing in between step which we lost when we moved everything to PBR. Unity blends the old way of texturing and making materials with PBR in some accidental way and it gives unity that depth and cripsness in the textures.

Unity was one of the first game which got released with bugs, and I mean huge ones. Nowadays we got used to it and don't hold so much grunge over bugs (as long as they get fixed), but for some reason Unity still get a bad rep because of that. Maybe because it was the first AAA game like that?
Now, the developers really tried to push the engine to the limit with the number of NPCs and it is the reason why they can suddenly appear and disappear in the screen, but that's such a minor flaw when comparing to the legions of little details included in the game. The dialogues were crafted so that you can stay near two speaking NPC and follow the conversation. The conversation will loop but each response is a natural answer of the previous one. For the first time, everything was to scale and so Arno can enter any open building without the need of a transition screen. That renders the parkour much more interesting. Every corner, rooms..etc is filled up with people doing something, it is such full of life. Graphics are amazing: textures feels real, the streets are crooked, Paris alternates rich city houses in this sparkling rococo style with muddy wooden barracks. The costumes are very rich.
In addition to points made in this video, the stealth in this game is also incredible once you properly gear up and learn how to use darts, smoke bombs and crackers. The attempt of multiplayer mission was a nice idea, perhaps needing a bit more work.
The only real beef I have with it is that the menu was clearly not finished. You cannot start several session, you have to delete all to replay the game, and once you started your session, the only way out is to stop the application. You cannot go back to the main menu.
At the end of the day, this is what one would ask of an AC game: entertaining parkour, satisfying combat mechanics, a working stealth, the correct amount of gear and collectables (those RPG ones are good games, but way too much equipment to collect and craft), a storyline with a real interaction with the creed, historical monuments to explore, a few riddles in addition to assassinations. It got all of those points right. It is, I find, the most fluid and enjoyable one of the series.

WTF are you talking about? Bugs were very normal in the 2000s. They're becoming less and less acceptable. The game came out in 2014.

    • @erwantanguy8361
      @erwantanguy8361 6 місяців тому

@@pascalg16 At its release, Unity had cut scenes where characters were not even displayed correctly. skins were missing. Those are the bugs I am talking about. The huge ones. I don't know what you were playing, but the cartridge games I purchased in the 90s and 2000s never had things like that (I mostly played console). Minor stuff where the character was not responded as expected in some exceptional conditions, yes. Some weird behaviors when you went at the very edge or specific spots of the maps, yes. Huge bugs in cut scenes like that, no. The frequency of collision bugs in Unity at first was also way too high. Being released in 2014 as the first AC of the PS4, the expectation was much higher than on previous platforms and it was clear that the job wasn't completed.
Because once cartridges or CD were printed on previous systems, developers couldn't fix issues, beta testing was more necessary. Since the time we can connect to internet and download fix patches, some studios seem more inclined to push things onto the market before absolute completion.
So, not that there were no bugs before, what I am saying we got use to now is that it is not uncommon to play a AAA game right at its release and experience things which shouldn't have passed the beta testing. Our current expectation is that it is going to be fixed. If that creates a lot of noise by the players who bought the games, it is then forgotten by most once those bugs gets fixed. An example which comes to mind is Cyberpunk 2077. It almost destroyed the studio and got a lot of gruntle at its release, but now that everything is patched, it's almost as if nothing happened and it sold 25 millions units. Unity however still gets remembered and tackled for its bugs. Watching videos from players trying to rank all of the AC, many downgrade Unity because of bugs while in fact, today, it doesn't have much left. I played AC III remastered for PS4, and it was more buggy than Unity on the same console and yet AC III does not have this reputation.

Just played this for the first time and beat it today.
Overall, I would give it either a 6 or 7. Above average because I felt like they did do some good improvements compared to Blag Flag to things like combat, graphics, and the parkour. The menus and customization all work great (except the map, TOO many things on there with no prioritization shown).
BUT I was finding it frustrating that whenever I wanted to actually go fully stealth through a mission, it's just too difficult because there's always like 40 guards on your way and they spot you from a mile away. There's not enough mechanics to hide properly, the disguise skill felt super awkward, and everything always ended up as a huge fight again the same three enemies instead of an awesome sneak through the mission area.
After having just played Deus Ex Mankind Divided, there's no comparison on the stealth. In that game, there's so many alternative paths and ways to go about your objective, that you can go through a place without killing anyway and literally being a ghost, where it feels next to impossible sometimes here (certainly not like a master assassin should be.)
And while the combat was improved compared to Black Flag, it does get repetitive after a while. It's more challenging than before which is nice, but it still pales in comparison to something like the combat from Batman Arkham games. And there's always TONS of enemies everywhere, so you see the limitation of the combat pretty quick.
PLUS I felt that the story was confusing and forgettable. All the voice acting and cutscenes look and sound great, but I didn't really understand why I was killing these people or what their importance was. In the end, it was just a revenge story and you kill a big bad templar guy or something, I don't even know. Honestly, the most memorable parts of the game were the cool glitch missions like climbing the German occupied Eiffel Tower or running through the sewers of early industrial France.
Finally, the side missions are not worth doing in my opinion, maaaybe I didn't do enough to warrant saying this, but I'm pretty sure they are all just the same as what you will find in the main story, but without nice cutscenes or any plot points. And there's WAAAY too many in the game, everywhere you go, there's like 5 missions around every corner. Quality over quantity I would say. RDR2 understood that, so I played all the side missions in that game and loved pretty much each and every one. But here, they seem like just ways to get some more skill points or gold.
If you are a big AC fan and have never played this, give it a try, but if not, you can probably skip this without any regret.

2014 was a weird year for new games in general, but for many people it had a lot of bugs, but none that really bothered me. They fixed a lot of the bugs so the game has become a lot better, but back then it might have been too late and people had kinda given up on it.
For me unity is the best game to roam and run around in. It has the best city landscape, there's a lot of life in it (npc activities, origins and especially oddesy feel dead in comparison) and I enjoy the side quests (especially the murder mysteries and the puzzles). Since I've started replaying the game I have also appreciated and enjoyed the main story, which I didn't really try to understand the first time I played it, but back then I didn't find the villains to be especially memorable. (I never played the co-op quests much because I play on ps4, so I don't have much opinion on those),
People also like to complain that Arno was supposed to be the "next ezio", which I don't really think applies. Ezio is almost the perfect character, and his mistakes never have consequences, and if they do, someone else seems to be at fault. Arno has very many flaws; brash, a little arrogant, puts his personal mission over that of the brotherhood, and his actions get him expelled from the brotherhood. After the main game he kinda becomes a grumpy, lone wolf. He is his own character. I think many peoples dislike of him is because they wanted another ezio, but he didn't become the next ezio in spite of them having similarities in their origin.
All in all it's actually my favourite ac game to play, especially now since they fixed the bugs. Because of the bad press back in 2014 its probably the most underrated game in the entire series.

This is probably one of the best games in the AC franchise; second only to Black Flag. It got bad reviews when it first released for a couple of reasons. One being it had bugs when it launched; two being that the game was ahead of it's time. Ubisoft wanted to push the limits of PC's with this one and even high end gaming rigs at the time struggled to run it. Every building had open windows to go through, and they intentionally loaded this title with many more npc characters than anything before it. They wanted it to really feel overcrowded like revolutionary France.

Hot take, Unity is a top 5 AC game, and is at it's best when you have 4 friends to play with. It allows for the most freedom of any games for your assassin. If you want to lean into combat and be an enforcer, only utilizing stealth to get in and thin the herd a bit before striking, you can do that. If you want to be a trickster, using poison and smokes to help your dedicated true assassin from a distance or even give them more opportunities, you can. Want to lean into stealth and be in and out before you're even noticed, you can do that. Do you want to utilize range and help pull targets away from you stealth team and even assist the enforcer when the crowd gets too think with difficult units, you can do that. You truly have more freedom in this game for your own assassin than any other, and playing with other people makes the game even better. I wish they made another Unity like game so you can be an assassin with your friends and even make your own assassin squadron with your friends. It was, and would be so much fun. Not to mention how great parkour felt in that game. The only issue was the horrible state the game launched in, but if they made another game like it and let it really cook for the right amount of time, it would be great.

But with time and bug fixes and updates to the game, it began to show how good the game actually is once that dark cloud over the game began to dissipate. It's unfortunate that players didn't get the overall experience when it initially released but with how far AC has fallen in terms of quality, it's refreshing that you can go back to a game that's a decade old now and not feel like it's a decade old and experience the high level quality and standard Ubisoft wanted to set for the game even back then

    Why i cannot kick
Why do i need a mobile companion application to open chests (yeah , you need a smatphone mobile app connected to Uplay to access 20% of gear to this game!!!)
Why did the game design went back to Assassin Creed 2 game logic... fake RPG with costumes from shoes to hoods ... and stupid glyph riddles
    Where are my sea battles
Why my basic assassin skills are now unlocked by skill points ... and i am forced to re-learn them again
Why 80% of them are useless in a singleplayer game
Why I cannot explore the map like in Assassin Creed 3, but i am forced to XYZ times, climb on a tower to unlock the map
They even ported those awful tailing/tackling missions from it and awful controls
Why stones can kill me , a character that has a metal/leather armor
Why enemies can doge bullets like superman
Why i cannot use meat shields no more
Why Arno cannot dual wield or carry 6 guns like in Assassin Creed 4
Why i cannot reload my half empty multi shot firearms
Where are my short swords and Cross Bows... or Dart Rope
Why he doesn't use a Dagger+Sword combat technique that EVERY ASSASSIN USED , in every game in this series ...to block ...Shields anyone or combat arm hooks
    Where are my climbing gloves
Why i must by "ANONYMOUS" to "USE" things !!!
Why is the Single player campaign a training for multiplayer
Why did you removed the thing that fleshed out the story... getting out of the animus ... and replaced those moments with pre-rendered movies
Why the Eagle Vision became a skill with a cool down
Why did this series did not end, with AC3 that ended the story ark ...
and much more , not to mention the many Asset Streaming bugs this game had that loaded textures\models too slow making it look silly at times when birds where replaced by Human NPCs

Unity was peak, it’s unfortunate that it got a bad rep for awhile. Glad it’s getting attention again.

I’m loving this game. The acrobatics, the camera and graphics work for me. It feels like a big open world. The stained glass is crazy when climbing some churches. Fine detail. It seems a little limited in some ways, but I can’t speak on that being new into this one. The opponents aren’t overly easy to battle, which I like. I’m in the beginning though. This might be the best ac.

This game released in a buggy state and it was not a trend to patch repair a game after release. Its a masterpiece

If you forget the plot and all the other imperfections of the game, it is just an amazing AC parkour sandbox

I’m starting with unity. I’m also new to the stealth genre in general so my honest opinion is after about 30 minutes of play. It’s a little slow so far I’ve only just got to the palace. I don’t understand the story. 8/10 so far but I haven’t played enough for a actually valid opinion
