How Richard Dreyfuss never won an academy award /Oscar for this movie really puzzles me. I can’t think of anyone else who could have played this part better than he did. Such a touching emotional movie from start to finish.

A man who dedicated his whole life to his passion for music, loving it enough to weather every hardship and the political scheming of his school, passing it on to whole generations of students, but unable to share it fully with own son. The anger, resentment, and bitterness that must instill within a person. But, finally, overcoming that anger to stop seeing Cole only as what he fails to have, but recognizing that he is still your son; your own beautiful boy.
Equally touching is that this song was written by a man Mr. Holland didn't think that Cole would even know, for the simple reason that Cole could have never heard his music. A conscious effort to acknowledge that prior failing on his part and to share with him, in the only way he reasonably can, the music of a man who changed the world.
This movie is so vastly underappreciated I can hardly stand it.

He got so lost in his work and neglected cole as a side effect, nobody believed he could ever reconcile with his deaf son who he truly loved. Such a Heart wrenching moment when he became completely vulnerable in front of his colleagues, friends, family, to reach out to his son and show him he’s not forgotten. And he means the world to Richard’s character

I really like this film and this is a beautiful scene. A way to show his son that he does care. I also like how he teaches the students how to think, not what to think, helping them to discover what they actually want to do and to follow their dreams and passions, rather than purely focusing on the academia.

It's also especially important in the context of the film because Cole and Mr Holland had a blowout fight after John Lennon's death where Cole called out his father's lack of interest in teaching his own kid about music, assuming he wouldn't get it because he's deaf

been a Dreyfuss fan for yrs .this movie didn't really have a chance for any awards because they chose to see the struggles of teachers and the funding for arts . He can really sing .

I love this movie from both the hardships of being a teacher who cares for music but has to deal with school "prioritizing" budget( my Marching band had those times sadly) to the real life depiction of how hard it is to raise not only a child but one who is deaf. Not that deaf or any different kind of person is bad but I love that the film doesn't just make the dad and or mom out to be uncaring or the super parent who can handle any child. I prefer to see some of the hardships so I can try and empathize with the characters. sorry for long comment when I get talking about something i like I will really talk lol

I haven't been able to take care of my son in quite some time. And I finally see the chance over the horizon. I thought of this and listened to it. I'm so happy I did. I get to be dad again. I'm so waiting patiently for the chance.

When I watched this movie it motivated me to get into ASL, now I'm in my third year of ASL and I'm fluent. Back then I didn't really appreciate the Beatles but just this year I've gotten REALLY into them and I adore this, because there isn't many deaf movies and one of the few good ones has the Beatles. I just love the combination, the deaf world and the best music there ever will be.
