That was very sweet and generous of Dreyfuss to say such nice things about Robert Shaw to his granddaughter. You could see that she was moved by it too.
Wow, it's real humility that, very rarely seen or expressed from someone with his status so to speak, pretty heart warming. The scene when Shaw and him are talking about the Indianapolis was astounding.
Shows what a great man Dreyfuss is; that he could drop all pretense and just feel the emotion, regardless of the fact he was being watched by millions. So cool. I've noticed when people get older, they remember a comrade who has passed on, even one who may have been initially troublesome to deal with, with much tenderness and fondness. If we could only have that sense of grace all of our life, and while in the midst of our (sometimes hard) interactions with others.
Incredible thing for a girl so young to do. Her grandfather would be very proud of her for approaching Dreyfuss on his behalf...any bad blood that may have existed between Richard and Shaw on the set of Jaws has been ultimately flushed out.
I love Jaws, and the three amigos who went out to hunt that "25 feet, 3 tons of em." I remember seeing Robert Shaw in The Deep and thought he was a great after and then in Jaws, he became one of my favorite actors. Dreyfuss and Schieder are great too I've seen several movies of theirs also, but Robert Shaw made a great character actor in all that he did. His granddaughter should be proud of him.
So enjoyed seeing Richard Dreyfuss in this story. I was just watching the movie Jaws for maybe the 10th time and decided to Google Robert Shaw and ended up at this touching video. Shaw's life was too short, but he was blessed with a big family and will be with us forever as Quint and all the other characters he created.
I've listened to Roy Schieder (sp) talk about the production of Jaws, and he's pretty clear it was a big pain in the butt. So it doesn't surprise me that Richard Dreyfuss gets weepy about the past, meeting Robert Shaw's little granddaughter. After all, the easy times are easily forgotten.
my favofilm and mr. shaw.rite...actor..........this was truly moving after all ive read to see dreyfuss react like this made me cry been a fan of robert shaw since i was a boy im 46 now and still believe hes one the great underrated actors cheers rick dreyfuss for remaining a class act
What a great actor Richard is, from his early start in American graffiti, Who's life is it anyway, Mr Hollands Opus, Jaws, and so many others. Great diversity in his films, they were all different.
After the shark itself, Quint undoubtedly was the star and anti-hero of the film. People say it was his best role to date. He definitely died too early though as you get the feeling that his career would have sky-rocketed soon after Jaws. Pity we never got to see...
Shaw's riveting soliloquy in Jaws, "Mr. Hooper, that's the Indianapolis...sometimes they'd go away....sometimes they wouldn't go away....I'll never wear a life vest again"
God. That was the most terrifying scene of the film. I was so young, went with my cousins and we picked Jaws over Bambi (I'm not even joking). The sharks were terrifying dont get me wrong, but Shaw's monologue in that cabin holy mother of god, now that was terrifying.
It's nice to see he had a change of heart, all I have EVER read or seen was that Robert Shaw gave Richard a hard time on set, and that they didn't get along. So, if it brings him closure, that's great.
i read that it was shaw's techinique to get dreyfuss to hate him on set/camera so it translated well into film but that they got along better as the story of the film also became frendlier well until quint was eaten by bruce (the shark) he he
watching the little Shaw cutie tearing up, got me crying like Dreyfus! I loved Shaw and was stunned when he died. It felt a lot like when I heard at age 11 that Bruce Lee had died suddenly at 32. Not the actor Shaw was, of course, but a giant in his own right with so much promise - like Shaw (much of it realized I suppose, but 51 is young for a man to go suddenly).
He "menaced" that role into well-deserved fame. Had everything down perfectly - the limp, the snarl, the brooding mood exploding into unbridled avarice. I haven't seen anyone like him since then, which tells you which wrong way the Hollywood herd went. Back then, the title of the movie was "The Sting." Today, it's "The Moo."
No shame in it at all. Jaws was THE defining work of Dreyfuss' career, and meeting Shaw's granddaughter must have been brought all those memories right back out. Kind of amusing though, because by all account Shaw and Dreyfuss could hardly stand each other on the set.
Where's the rest of the interview?! Serrasongs, it wasn't that Richard didn't like Robert, it was more that Robert stayed in character in that he didn't want to get chummy with Richard & kept up the adversarial relationship off screen.
I always thought Richard Dreyfuss was such a class act. I rate him right up there, with Tom Hanks as far as acting goes. I didn't even know that Robert Shaw had died, till I was watching the "Special Edition" Jaws dvd & I saw it, in the special features. Yet, another great talent taken away from us, way to damn soon. Go figure.
im 26 and i watched jaws for the first time 25th feb 2015.... and i absolutely LOVED IT! omg... i dont know why i didnt watch it sooner... and ***spoiler alert**** i wanted quint to survive the most... and when he got eaten i was like omfg... noooo! because he was telling a story earlier on inside the boat about hearing screams when his crewmates were being eaten by sharks when his ship went down in WW2... and then he was screaming like that 30 mins later... loved the movie but quint was the highlight for me and i never knew who he was until i searched robert shaw and he played red grant in from russia with love! then... the mood changed when i saw robert shaw b 1927 - 1978... such a good actor gone way too soon its very sad but... its good that i got to see him as quint for the first time.. and man spielberg... what a fucking legend. If im right... he made jaws at 26! the age i am now... very impressive. Id actually say jaws is in my top 5 now... so good on shaw for taking the role i read he only took the role because his wife told him too... the film wouldnt have been the same without him RIP mate
It was a bit different for me. Pop was a Seabee in the Philippines at that time & helped unload the bomb parts. Besides building the runways, etc. Some of the asides to his story spoke of sharks, beer, CO's, death & killing to survive. Quint will forever remind me of pop & those brave men & their "can do!" attitude.
Even if Shaw and Dreyfuss didn't get along on set, that was probably at least in part by design. Spielburg is infamous/famous for manipulating actors to get real reactions out of them, and Shaw and Dreyfuss were at much different places in their careers. But fuck, once Dreyfuss saw the finished product and what performances came out of it any lingering resentment (if any) had to have gone away instantly.
hooper!!!!!! hahahahahaha!!! jaws is still the best film. none can really compare. everyone who saw that movie thought twice before stepping into the ocean.FACT.
Neville James Martin - Wow! Thanks for sharing that bit about Robert Shaw. Never realized he was mean to Dreyfuss. It was good to know how much it meant to learn about Dreyfuss reaction to Shaw's granddaughter. Thank you!
I am wondering if this lovely young lady of 14 is actually Robert Shaw's great-daughter rather than grand daughter. Robert Shaw was larger than life. Tough tender handsome talented comical and most of all; endearing.
Dreyfuss, to his credit, exposed himself. He was quite intimated by Shaw. And to see his lovely, granddaughter, overwhelmed him. Her innocence and purity exposed his emotions. You and I would have done the same. However, Dreyfuss should not have been so cocky during the filming. Just my opinion.
From what I have read and heard and yada yada yada, seems as though Mr. Shaw was pretty much "rough" with everyone he was around...although from what I read he was pretty respectful of Paul Newman and Robert Redford and many of the other cast mates of The Sting. I still enjoyed his work on camera.Cheers!
I would have had loved to be a fly on the wall when she watched Jaws for the first time and seen her grand-dad get chomped on by the shark, screaming and bleeding from the mouth. Hell, it gave me nightmares forever at 10 years old. I can't imagine if it was a relative of mine, acting or not! lol
just watch a documentary about Jaws.....apparently Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss did NOT get on at all...I wouldn't say they hated each other, but not best buddies in the least...
You are missing the reason. It has to do with male relationships. I just watched the documentary as well and it did not say they literally hated each other. I could easily see that. And like adtvx pointed out above me said, just closure to a long ride. I'm sure it's emotional for Dreyfuss that they parted on bad terms, Shaw died and then Jaws went on to have a life of it's own and become a huge ongoing blockbuster and it did actually make Dreyfuss' career and I've heard him say that. He said somewhere that he really wanted Jaws because he felt he had done a poor job of The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz.
Sean Jensen I'm glad it worked out for everyone. I can still remember people standing in a line going around the corner of the building just to see Jaws. You don't see that anymore for movies today.
if you heard Rich, he said it was like a closure for him. Tensions may have been high between him and Robert, but he had to be respectful and not say anything bad to his granddaughter about her Grandpa.
They did go at each other a great deal. But the situation was also in part to blame. Robert Shaw was the very best thing about Jaws. What an incredible talent.
How very kind of Dreyfuss. He does seem to have a big heart.
what a big hearted guy.. I think my Dreyfuss Fan Stock just doubled its value. Wonderful actor and human being :).
I love him, one of my acting inspirations
word! i wish i knew more people like that in my life.. id probably be less depressed…. All i can see is lazy, ignorant, entitled, trolls….
She is the very image of her granddaddy! She looks like quite a lovely young lady.
Yet it's her grandmother, the enchantingly beautiful Mary Ure, whom she most resembles.
www.imdb.com/name/nm0881829/
But she has a little bit more facial hair.
Wow, it's real humility that, very rarely seen or expressed from someone with his status so to speak, pretty heart warming. The scene when Shaw and him are talking about the Indianapolis was astounding.

I've just become a huge dreyfuss fan ...I started to cry a little....next time i'll see jaws i'll think of this moment.
Like Robert Shaw, Mr Dreyfuss is one of the greats. Always enjoy his work.
I had no idea Robert shaw was just 51 years old when he died Richard and Robert both great actors loved them in 75 JAWS
He still sounds like he did back in Jaws his voice sounds exactly the same
FlyingTurtleMan your voice doesnt change much as an adult until you get VERY old..or have throat probles like sayyy Elton John
I cryed to just for watching... I love those 3 guys!! Richar, Robert and Roy
Incredible thing for a girl so young to do. Her grandfather would be very proud of her for approaching Dreyfuss on his behalf...any bad blood that may have existed between Richard and Shaw on the set of Jaws has been ultimately flushed out.
Amazing film, amazing guy. you just gotta love this man.
109 people dislike this video- what goes through the mind to dislike this?
One of them rare great emotional moments on TV.
I love Jaws, and the three amigos who went out to hunt that "25 feet, 3 tons of em." i wish the whole interview was shown.
Richard is one of my fav actors..
Richard (Ricky) Dreyfuss is a class act on all levels!
I had to get a tissue for this one. Robert Shaw has to be my favourite actor of all time

Sweet moment. Handled well by Tubs, in fairness.
She's the spitting image of her grandfather too.
Beautiful moment. Thanks for sharing.

he he
lol i clicked this video thinking he would be made after reading "breakdown"
When you talk about Shaw...... you say..... "what an actor!" To me, his characters are still alive and very real.... ya folla!
yeah Dreyfuss you rock man!
watching the little Shaw cutie tearing up, got me crying like Dreyfus! I loved Shaw and was stunned when he died. It felt a lot like when I heard at age 11 that Bruce Lee had died suddenly at 32. Shaw wouldn't be the granddaughter's last name
Need to see more of Richard Dreyfuss!
Robert Shaw in the The Sting?
Dreyfuss in "Let It Ride" was SUPERB.
Don Reed ahhh..you brought me back, young man! i fell in love with Lonnegan when I first saw that movie as a girl. Even though he was the antagonist!
He "menaced" that role into well-deserved fame. Had everything down perfectly - the limp, the snarl, the brooding mood exploding into unbridled avarice.
I haven't seen anyone like him since then, which tells you which wrong way the Hollywood herd went.
Back then, the title of the movie was "The Sting."
Today, it's "The Moo."
jeez she's so beautiful
With that distinctive voice you don't even have to watch this and you know it's Matt Hooper
No shame in it at all. Jaws was THE defining work of Dreyfuss' career, and meeting Shaw's granddaughter must have been brought all those memories right back out. Kind of amusing though, because by all account Shaw and Dreyfuss could hardly stand each other on the set.
you see this?! this is why you should listen to your heart and never lock up your feelings. you will never get better if you wont let it out!
Wow… that is touching...
he's making me want to cry too! :)
Where's the rest of the interview?! Serrasongs, it wasn't that Richard didn't like Robert, it was more that Robert stayed in character in that he didn't want to get chummy with Richard & kept up the adversarial relationship off screen.
I LOVE RICHARD!!! FAVORITE IN " GOODBYE GIRL"

A really moving piece on one of the great movie partnerships.
And then after the drinking scene, they were all mates....
***** totally got into his character tooo much
Mike Green Ship-mates! Yarrr!

Catherine Lopez yeah, I know, right? you'd think only his character was like that
favourite actor of all time, best best best
superb actor
Somewhere-Robert shaw is pissing himself laughing...
and looking down on his lovey granddaughter
***** i meant lovely
I am wondering if this lovely young lady of 14 is actually Robert Shaw's great-daughter rather than grand daughter. Robert Shaw was larger than life. Tough tender handsome talented comical and most of all; endearing.
Shaw was only 51 when he died and had 10 children including 2 adopted ones.
Chris B Yes I checked after Chris and read he had very young children and was looking forward to having more. Cheers
Could be, but It doesn't matter. It was a great moment that was shared with us and she is a beautiful child
Tarn Sand there's no such thing as a great-daughter as a relative. Granddaughter or great granddaughter, maybe
Tarn Sand i kinda feel sorry for them, having a drunk dad
What a lovely moment..I admit, I got a little sniffly.
Me Dreyfuss your awesome in American graffiti , you can stay in my place anytime you want pal!!
Shaw died in August 1978.
If I am right, I think her grandmother was Mary Ure, who also left us far too early. Very moving and wonderful.
the woman from the movie Custer? Oh, wow. husband and wife starring in the same movie together. maybe that's how they met
they are both together in Heaven now. amen
Wonderful moment but from what I've seen in the 'Jaws' documentaries, Shaw and Dreyfuss did not get along at all.
Respect
Christopher Cory i see you're a fan.
Christopher Cory says the man with RS as his profile pic
Sure am brilliant film and a brilliant actor gone too soon
Christopher Cory friend, when we die, u wanna race me to his mansion up in heaven to meet him?
My god Iv seen it loads of times now and still can't help get a tear in my eye .
Lovely.
Ah i know
Wonderful
I'm trying to imagine the two people who gave this video a thumbs down...
What about Bob?
is this corn hand shucked??
You think he's gone? He's not gone. That's the whole point! He's never gone!
Hoopeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!
From what I have read and heard and yada yada yada, seems as though Mr. Shaw was pretty much "rough" with everyone he was around...although from what I read he was pretty respectful of Paul Newman and Robert Redford and many of the other cast mates of The Sting. I thought Robert shaw was an englisman from Manchester,or stockport?
I share the same birth day as Robert shaw :)
just watch a documentary about Jaws.....apparently Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss did NOT get on at all...I wouldn't say they hated each other, but not best buddies in the least...
You are missing the reason. It has to do with male relationships. I just watched the documentary as well and it did not say they literally hated each other. It implied their was antagonism and that Shaw teased Dreyfuss to get a reaction out of him. Shaw was a bigger than life actor compared to the young Dreyfuss. Looking back on it I believe that as Dreyfuss matured he realized that Shaw had made him a better actor and person. And because he was never able to tell him that their was no closure after Shaw's early death until he met his grand daughter.
if u show a third of the interview..whats the point???
i want rich as my dad, and robert as my grandpaw! hahaha
I thought things between dreyfuss and shaw were bad on the "jaws" movie set. I read that they didn't get along or something like that, and that shaw was often giving him a hard time. if that was the case, then why was dreyfuss so thrilled to meet his granddaughter?
As he said it was "closure" I guess to make up for all the bad blood between him and Shaw.
Well, we've heard Shaw supposedly gave him shit a lot during Jaws but perhaps whatever he was complaining about at the time was actually true and that after all these years, Dreyfuss has come to respect him for that instead of being angry with him, sort of like a father that gives you shit but who you actually learn something from.
Sean Jensen
I'm glad it worked out for everyone.
As we all know the set was maddening with all the delays, so it no doubt put a great deal of strain on everyone that might not have been there had the situation not been so intolerable.
Plus they did respect one another as actors and there were bonding moments, sober and drunk, I'd heard that they shared as well.
But the other important aspect of what may have happened is the sheer unconscious bonding that goes on when you make a film, or a play and are in such close quarters for so long. There can be an element of a family feeling, for lack of a better word. The film was stalled so badly by the shark not working that the actors would often improvise and work out stuff to do with Speilberg. This was a real arduous, hands-on, mess that many people thought was going to bomb!
In fact prior to the release of the film, Dreyfuss came out and tried to disassociate himself from the film, not blaming Speilberg, but I think the studio brass. It was a hot mess.
There were other circumstances too. I believe, Shaw's wife, the fine acttress Mary Ure, died while they were on location doing "Jaws". She died under very strange circumstances. And Shaw was devastated. No doubt they came together over that as well.
And the fact that indeed this larger than life, amazingly talented man, Robert Shaw died so young obviously had a huge effect on Dreyfuss, especially at this stage of his life.
A very touching moment for Dreyfuss and Shaw's young grand-daughter who does bear a resemblance for sure.
was the young girl in the audience his daughter? she's a little young, no?
Wow...wow.
No Shaw died in 1979 or 1980....... I was 15.....am now turning 49
died 1978, said it in The Making of Jaws
Wow
IS SHAW DEAD?
No, he's alive. Check your TV duide.
he actually died about 2 years after Jaws
He died on August 28th, 1978. Which happened to be my 10th birthday
Todd Stein One day before mine . My birthday is August 29th.
No, but he's not as mobile anymore since he was amputated at the bottom of his ribcage after Jaws ate that part clean off.
HO HO!!!
Don't mean to be the insensitive guy but umm when is she legal? When was this interview done?
Dreyfuss is the man!
