This is a fantastic lesson! Here’s why: 1) one of the greatest r&r songs ever, especially for lyrics, vocals, and electric guitar 2) accessibility! I consider myself lower intermediate student. I learned everything in this lesson in 2 hours. Played along with the original MTV video within 2 hours. So much fun! 3) he teaches various basic techniques I’ll be using evermore in many ways. 4) i taught myself guitar basics as a teen 50+ years ago and then stopped altogether for 50 years. Life interfered. Now that I’m retired, I have time to do the things I love. Maybe those early years help me now, but UA-cam lessons like this one have revived my love for guitar. 5) Lessons like this one are just plain fun. Not necessarily easy for a beginner, but there’s nothing here that’s impossible for a beginner to learn. Just watch, listen, imitate, and learn!
Outstanding! Not only is the actual performance here spot on but the crystal clear explanation completely nailed it shut. Enviable, the ability to play - and teach at this level - WOW! Thank you!
Ah man…this is why I love UA-cam…came up on my feed out of nowhere. Been playing 40 yrs and haven’t played this song since the 80s. Totally inspired me to re-learn from scratch, removing the mistakes I made at the time and added in since…lolz. Looks a great channel and I will begin devouring your content to keep my chops up …nice job friend and subscribed.
Excellent tutorial - great playing, demonstration, coaching and advice. I love that you stress to have fun and experiment with different voicings. Thanks so much for reminding me what a great songs this is and getting me back into playing it, with a much better understanding of what makes this song great and playing it so much fun! You're a very talented guitarist and teacher!
Great tutorial for this fab song . Such useful info on your amp settings or pedals too so you can go get that pretenders tone just right 😊 many thanks 🎸
I swear, if you closed your eyes you’d think you hearing a Rickenbacker. I have several guitars but my Tele is the go to when I need the full spectrum of tones gig or jam. Great lesson!
Always loved this Song. Thank you for reminding us what a great piece of Songwriting it is! Also, used to just play the Lead Line but you're right the best part are the Jangly Open String Chords and Embellishments!
I was always drawn to this song when it was being played over and over on MTV before I ever aspired to be a guitar player. It was that opening chord progression that makes you feel good inside for some reason. Now some 40 years later I've started learning guitar and my first tele should be delivered this week, very excited, and this iconic song is the first song I want to learn on it. Great tutorial! You've nailed the jangle that makes this song so great. This video deserves WAY more views and likes. 👏👏👏 Thank you! Oh and those outro arpeggios are SO satisfying 🤗
agree on all points. when the song came out and I saw on MTV I instantly loved it - as I did all the Pretenders stuff in the 80s. Great songs, always had great guitar
Man great all time tune...jangling. always loved that work. YOU DID A VERY IMPRESSIVE JOB defining it and laying it all out. Thank you greatly. Really enjoyed your method of display
I grew up lifting the needle off the record several times to learn in the early 80s. It's a pleasure to come on YT to brush up and go. Thank you brother ! Cheers 🍷
Man!! I have been playing this song right and WRONG, for years!! THANKS SO MUCH for showing me the way. BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS.........Al pooper I love you more than you'll ever know. guitar parts especially
I accessed your channel to check if my approach so far was correct regarding the intro lick and was pleased to note it was; but you then showed how to play the whole thing and saved me time working out all the open chords. It's a heart breaking structure very moving and complements the lyrics so well. So thanks for that.
Nice one... We've been playing this in our band for quite a while now, but I always felt it just wasn't quite right. Now I can see that it's mainly been missing the extra jangle of those open chord shapes that let the high E ring out (plus a few of the other little refinements you've given us here). Thanks sooo much for this - I'm going to make sure we do it at our next rehearsal. I thought we were fairly close, but this makes such a big difference! Thanks for putting in the time and sharing this.
I’ll be 61 next month and have been learning guitar for 3 years. This is a great song and a really well presented lesson. I’ve finally reached a point where I can play this. But do I understand it? How? I’m not sure where the guitar journey leads but is this where it leads? From ability to understanding? Thanks again for your channel here.
such a lovely lesson man... I played that in a band when I was 25... We had a girl who could handle it.... I learned a some cool stuff... You have a great ear. Thank you... It all sounds authentic, but I was blown away by the lead riff.... It is so on target.... Thanks again....
My late friend Will McGregor new Billy Bremner. Will played on a Chrissy track years ago. He was Albert Lee’s bass player. Miss him. Excellent lesson here mate!❤
You're a great teacher! I just subscribed. You lay this tune out just like it is, and very informative. You definitely know your stuff and you play it the way it's supposed to be! Other videos I've watched on how to play this particular song hell I'm not even sure the others have even heard the song? Great job man!! 👍👍👍
Brilliant Sir , well done ! I would wager, that you love that beautiful telecaster ! I will not forget that you took time and energy to share such a great song that we can jingle jangle with hopefully for a long time, really appreciate that . Thanks Man !
Most excellent lesson and many thanks! Where'd the 39 years go? Loved it first time hearing and now look forward to playing it. Would never have figured out all the intricacies- you are very good!
Great lesson can't wait to see what else you have in your arsonl for now I'll stick to the four or five I'm working on lol thanks for sharing the music.!!
Agree with you on the quality of this song, it is well written and produced. There is a bit of acoustic shadowing early on. Love the jingly jangly tone from those teles!!
That one is a 2020 70th anniversary Broadcaster. Made to have many of the original Broadcaster specs. Great playing guitar, and the first real tele I ever owned. Love that guitar
wow... and as I was going from 13th down to 8 to 5.. then I changed to f# and slide to A banging my pinky on hi E... sounds like some steve howe stuff from yes... I digress.. i'll go back to your chords now... ha great channel...
Doug, the small thumbnail photo for this lesson sure looks like Keef--- Oddly enough, I don't think Chrissy would mind hearing that. 😜 Sure like your vids! You excel at this. It's your calling in life. 🎸🎸🎵🎵 Live long and prosper my friend.
I love this song so much I learnt the bass line for it. I was thrilled to see the rhythm and lead sections so I learnt that today! Great tutorial. Perhaps some more close ups of the fretboard would have helped me get it quicker, but great job. Thank you.
Well if you have come here to learn this song then there is no better place to go. This is it.

Oh its like Craig T. Nelson giving the tutorial. Great lesson "Coach"😆..Seriously, the most complete lesson I've seen.
I couldn't put my finger on why he's always looked familiar!
Ah, the 80's! Thanks for the lesson on this awesome song. Chrissie Hynde had some amazing songs.

I feel the same way about the Ric. Could still be one in there, who knows. It definitely has the sound of one
Always loved this Song. Thank you for reminding us what a great piece of Songwriting it is!
Also, used to just play the Lead Line but you're right the best part are the Jangly Open String Chords and Embellishments!
Great song and great lesson…this is a perfect song to learn new chord shapes to help break out of the “cowboy chord” position…job well done😎
So simple yet so effective and beautifully arranged. Killer tone too.
