    Learn how to play Baby Blue on guitar as performed by Badfinger. Part 1 of 2. Truly one of the great power pop songs of all time, maybe the first!
    Covering the acoustic and electric rhythm guitar parts and the electric lead parts. The secret to sounding like the record is...a Capo on the 4th fret. Trust me, that's how it was recorded. I know you don't see them playing live with a capo, but watch the lesson, try it - I think you'll agree.
    Part 2 of this lesson series is me covering the full song against a backing track with bass and drums. See that here • Baby Blue - Badfinger ... .
    Hope you enjoy.

    This is such a beautiful song, and yet so sad. Their so-called manager literally robbed them blind and ruining their careers and driving at least TWO of them to Suicide. They had a 40 year career ahead of them and he DESTROYED them. So sad man.

    What amazes the hell out of me is way back in the sixties and seventies these bands like the Beatles The rolling Stones bad finger etc. All were geniuses to figure out these songs and these chords? People can't hardly do that anymore it seems? Maybe I'm wrong but I love that 60s 70s and 80s music

    Baby Blue came out in 1972. I was only 11 when I first heard it and remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard it. I immediately fell in love with the song and out of all Rock&Roll songs ever it was and has remained my favorite Rock song. I just turned 62 and have been playing since I was turned 62 and it's still my favorite. I started playing guitar when I was 10, have written and recorded over 500 original songs but I have never written one I think is better. Sure there's more sophisticated songs but to me it is the quintessential Rock song. I learned to play it before the internet by ear. It's the perfect song!

      Learning chord shapes that mimic C, D, & G open shapes are a huge help, particularly in country music. With them, you can noodle around until you figure out where the lead singer, (or backing guitarist), has the capo placed. As often as not there's a capo somewhere, especially for the keys of Bb, Eb, & F.. (Bb as G, Eb as C, & D as F. all with the capo at the 3rd fret As you likely know, the other two "open shapes" translate to barre chords. (A, Am, E, & Em)

    If I might offer a suggestion for your guitar lesson videos: for each section of a song, before you start talking about HOW to play it, just actually play through it first to demonstrate it. This would be helpful for a couple reasons: first, viewers have better context, and second, more advance players may only need to see it being done without the later explanation.

    Pete did not use a capo to play "Baby Blue" live, and most likely didn't when they recorded it. The dual rhythm guitars on this recording are not separated in stereo, so it's difficult to tell what guitar each is playing in what position. For what it's worth, Joey Molland plays this live without a capo. I still like your version, and I agree that's probably what's on the record. The only catch is that if you're playing it live, it's not ideal to play the solo with a capo on.

    • @noodlegawd
      @noodlegawd Рік тому

      By the way, you can also do this with a capo on the 2nd fret, basically playing most of the same chords as the open version, without having to barre them. And this makes the scale parts easier too.

    Yeah I used to play this with a band about 5 years ago. I DO THINK THE GUITARS WERE CAPOED. However when we were doing it back then we didn’t know and played it WITHOUT in B . We had two guitars in the band and I was doing the lead…if I was still doing it I would definitely CAPO on 4! Sounds more accurate and nicer voicing . Great job ! My only suggestion is after you show the solos, play them once through in tempo to demonstrate the feel. Thanks

      I wonder if the solo would sound OK from the capo 4 position when doing it live? I guess you could try to quickly drop the capo? never tried that before.

    For me, this was a tough electric part to play well, with the barred c-shape and some challenging chord changes. Much easier to play the acoustic part with a capo, but the capo doesn't sound right to me on the electric part. When playing along with the song, the record seems a bit sharper than standard tuning. Assuming it was sped up a bit. Great song by an underrated, group with a tragic end. The song was the perfect fit for BB's closing scene.

    There is no capo used on the main guitar. Listen closely to the first chord, you hear the notes B and F#, you do NOT hear the D# on the A string that you would hear with a capo and the "G" fingering. Why do so many people get this wrong?

      I get it - but I'm thinking about the studio recording. I know you CAN play it without the capo - but I've yet to see a live version that Badfinger plays without the capo where it sounds anywhere near as precise as it does in the studio. videos are out there of them playing it "live" but its clearly the studio instrument track with a live vocal and them miming the instruments. I'm not saying they couldn't have done it without the capo, I'm saying I'd like to see it without the capo sounding like the recording. Yet to see one. happy to be wrong, but still waiting for someone to show me one.

      Hi - for the rhythm guitar I used a Neo Instruments Ventillator II (to simulate the slow chorus from a leslie - here's a link to where can get one if you are interested imp.i114863.net/dogooQ . For the lead I used an overdrive (no leslie effect) probably my Blues Driver which is here imp.i114863.net/rnPQLB

    Hmmm, intriguing. I totally respect your common sense approach and is exactly how I've approached figuring out songs..a combo of tone, the way the fingerings come together AND they way the fingerings allow subsequent notes to ring out such as slides and overtones. "Tone" is super difficult though as recording techniques make all the difference often enough. But have to admit, I've never thought of capo for Joey's part. Usually even "mimed" appearances are played pretty much as recorded and you can learn a lot from these. I started when the only performances I could see were a televised Midnight Special or musical variety appearance so was 98% by ear but perhaps only about 75% on spot. Ughh!, I hate the idea of to "cheating" with the capo if the real guy didn't do it....LOL! Know what I mean? Joey please tell us!!!

    • @12footchain
      @12footchain  Рік тому

      it ain't cheating :-). It's a tool like anything else, you get a different sound with it vs without. I may be wrong, maybe they didn't use a capo, but either way capo's aren't cheating in my opinion

    • @derekec
      @derekec Рік тому

      12 foot chain I'm kidding and agree the tone changes but not just by capo but by whether choosing to play the riffs in "open" position or all fretted. And again, so much relies on the recording - guitar, equalization, effects, tape media, mic'd vs direct, etc. For 50 years I've told myself to ease up and just play the song whatever my own interpretation but the reality is we're drawn to wanting to be them playing it. . As you sent your reply I'm trying it different ways but I'll never know. You've provided lots of insight. Thanks.

    • @derekec
      @derekec Рік тому

      12 foot chain Another thought I'll throw out there supporting your interpretation. Joey comments that Pete brought the song in and they worked out the details right there then recorded. Since Pete wrote it on acoustic and certainly with capo4, that could've been Joey's starting point. He might have planned to overdub the solo rather than play it live in one take. Since the capo does get in the way both for at least one note as well as free (and in tune) bending, it's possible that for live performances he was faced with a dilemon 🍋 and chose to rework the chord arrangement to suit if he were to continue playing the lead exactly as created. Dunno, just a thought. Seems easier to move the solo though.

      Not sure. Is it the one they are playing to the recorded instrument track and singing live? It's because it was for a TV show broadcast and they needed to just get a visual performance that looked good and seemed live. My guess anyway.
