lightninboy1979 actually i will say Marc Ford is better, whereas Ford who has so much more soul , and will endeavor to do 1.5 bends on high E and B strings also Joe Walsh... Youl'll never hear Mayer do those things. I feel Mayer is a SRV clone, and a million guitarist who do this, there are a handful of licks. He's good, but in a world with a lot of good guitarist, not innovative like a Marc Ford w uber more soul and edge , or a Zappa, Howe, or a Jerry. Id also say that Ben Harper and Derek are more influential as far as blues guitarists. I think Mayer did a good job, iI quite enjoyed...he can do a variety of things, tasty but does not separate form the pack for me.
Amazing. John's getting a perfect blend between his blues background & the Garcia's way of following every chord progression with chromatic approaches. Can't wait to see more
Thomas Gilbert It would be amazing if you could make a lesson on the 'concepts' of that style, ie. which notes/licks give that kind of sound. Love your channel man!
I wonder what the youtube comments would have looked like when Brent first joined the dead...or better yet Donna and keith coming in after pigpen..oh my...just a thought......long live the dead
Seriously. People are so quick to complain but spend $$$ to go see. I was out at the gorge for D&C company and people were growing so much shade but they drove all the way there to see the show. Just listen to the music and be GRATEFUL
Ugh. Absolutely loved, loved, loved this magical place. It was a beacon of hope and musical awesomeness - never to be repeated on this spectral plane. RIP Terrapin Crossroads and thanks to everyone involved that made it a reality here in Marin.
Twice I took my Mother to Ca to see family and stayed at the Embassy suites in Marin and went to Terripan every night after she had her happy hour class of wine. Was awesome. Sad it’s closed down.
Wow, Mayer clearly caught the bug. He's always been a great at translating blues into pop but it's fantastic to hear him (and Ross James!) interpret the Garcia playbook!
george cole If he did, it was when he got into the blues trio. But I don't think it's like that at all. It's just new phase after new phase; maturing, growing, getting better
george cole I have always said that John Mayer, for some reason, was hiding his true guitar-playing ability. My significant other informed me that it was probably because he could make more money doing what he was doing. I have to agree with her. I am just glad that it looks like he is finally going to show the world his true guitar-playing ability. If you search for some of his older stuff, you will soon realize that the guy is a guitar genius, but you already knew that :-)
1984hereweare "showing the world what he can do guitar-wise" makes great financial sense in the context of playing with Lesh, for both parties: The Dead want to sell to the legions of Mayer fans and Mayer wants to sell to the legions of Deadheads. Mayer - Lesh collaboration enables each camp to become aware of the other and (wait for it, wait for it) buy, buy, buy.
I fucking hate how people call any sort of collab or different take on projects a "cash grab." You really think these multi-millionaires give a shit about that? It's not like the Grateful Dead are out to sell platinum albums. Those guys already fill up shows in their respective gigs. They've been doing this for 50 years. They love the fucking music. John Mayer is putting off recording a new album to go on tour with Bob, Bill, and Mickey. If anything, yeah, the Dead want fans to listen to John's music, because it's fucking good. True deadheads listen to all sorts of shit, because they like good music. Shits not about money, it's about making good fucking music. MUSIC. Not MONEY. Don't think they went for a "cash grab" playing a few tunes at fucking Terrapin Crossroads after they just played a 2 hour show. If they were all about money, they'd pound out generic album after generic album and play the same shit on stage every night for 40 minutes. Do they do any of that? Do they even associate with people who do anything remotely similar? No. They don't. They play good fucking music with good fucking musicians. That's all this shit is. #RantOver
Every few years I feel like I'm watching Mayer for the first time. In a way that there's a semi-reinvention that makes him appear "exposed", vulnerable, or accessible - and then he just Butt-f#ck's it to complete mastery, taking whatever he was doing to a whole new level and yet still connecting to the original intimacy of the idea. Is it really like that at Terrapin Xroads? Where one night u just go in for a cocktail and a meal and all of a sudden Lesh and Mayer take the stage for an impromptu jam? If it is what a treat that place must be!
Okay, Phil's place, Terrapin Crossroads is a restaurant, in San Rafael CA with a SMALL ~ only 150 person capacity musical 'small-room~venue', which is one foot from the restaurant's parking lot. Right, so, then ~ JOHN MAYER, comes out and DOES THIS performance. ONCE IN A LIFETIME! This audience was INCREADABLE LUCKY!!!
Thank you! This was so much fun! After two night of GD 1977 with Mayer not singing anything, it was great to see him in the bar with Phil & Ross singing some goodness :D
That is one of the best sound systems in a bar I have ever heard recorded on UA-cam, vocals and instruments sound great. Good job everybody, very enjoyable. Thanks for posting.
Sounds like we're getting a mix from the board here, this may even have been recorded and mixed afterwards. The buzz from the snare and the clarity of the ride cymbal hits are too clear for this to just be a room mic, IMO
Awwww man... it just seems like my life has passed by without me ever being in the right place at the right time! I thank GOD above for UA-cam and other vid channels like it for enabling me to experience moments like this one... on at least some level anyway.
Didn't just figure it out. I have the John Mayer Trio Live album from when it came out. What year was that? I knew he was an SRV devotee from way back. I'm just saying that he's been on a helluva run lately and his amazing guitar skills. have been in the spotlight.
I love all John's music. A lot of people want him to go back to continuum type stuff which is great but it's his last two albums that have been on heavy rotation. Paradise Valley and Born and Raised are quintessential summer time albums IMO.
lightninboy1979 Mayer can't sit still with one genre. he's always on the move, which I think is the key to becoming a better guitarist. The most influences you have, the more well rounded and uniquely developed your style becomes - IMO.
Starting around 23:00 : absolutely brilliantly stacked lead guitar playing. Hitting different frequencies, feeding off one another's dynamics. No toe-stepping. That's good shit.
I just accidentally stumbled upon this insanely good performance after seeing Dead and Company at Fenway 2016 & 2017. Can’t believe this was out there for this long w/o me seeing it! Phil loving life! Can’t wait for Gillette this June!
There's no doubt that this place at Terrapin Crossroads gives musicians a space to open up and expand their talents right before our very eyes and EARS...what a great vibe! (Phather knows best...)
Jeffery Noel John Mayer would have done a better job than Trey (phish) on Fare Thee Well. That guy seems like a clown compared to JM, but it's just one opinion. It's like comparing a Varsity player to JV on both guitar and vocals.
I tend to agree with their choice. The better part of the Dead was their risk-taking, in my opinion. They were sort of caught - John Kadlecik and Stu Allen can do that "exact Jerry clone" best, but that often leans towards the worst of the plodding, meandering, dying Dead. So they wanted somebody with a bit of originality, though from looking at the date of these shows and Lesh's obvious joy in NOT plodding along here, I'd bet they'd already invited Phil by then. Couldn't really UNdo it. For that matter, it was obvious Micky Hart was way, way out of practice, but what could they do, besides just turning his mikes off? Un-invite him, too? Nah, just hug and get it over with. Of course, I don't love all Dead unconditionally, listening to any Dead past the creeping heroinization of Garcia makes me angry, sad & creeped. I could quite happily die without ever hearing another Sugar Magnolia, but I have a iPod loaded with 13 "Dark Stars" from 1972 to 1974 (and a half dozen of the best Mahavishnu shows from 72 and 73). Listen to that stuff carefully for a bit and your brain will never quite fit back in the box it came out of. I'm among the many fans of the Phil band with Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes, and now that they've got Bill Frisell and John Scofield on tap TOO, this might just be the chance of a lifetime for Mayer to go way deep and way wide, you know?

NEVER get tired of this ol' classic and they did it better than ever here in my professional Dead critic estimation. Way t go fellas . Pretty dank shit
Very cool version of sugaree. Sure do miss Phil with the boys, would like to at least have oteil be an equal member up in the live sound mix like Phil always was, but would also be awesome to have him come to a couple shows this summer! Also Mayer is the man
omg how did one get an invite to this bar?? yes long live the dead, amen to that, dead and company is a like a fat ass snack after a good buzz late into the nite, enjoyed the hell out of this video,
I have just listened into this one. Not sure if again today for the first time I am going to have to scroll down and change the pages to find out if I was already a visitor here and a commentator.
Yummy, sweet, guitar pudding. I hope John really lets loose on the guitar on his next album. He needs to release a jam centered album. That would be epic.
Finally John! Please share with the world your guitar-playing talent. I saw you at Red Rocks a couple of years ago (13th row) and I know it is immense. Let loose man!
Really hoping that the Dead&Co Summer tour doesn't get cancelled on account of this Covid-19 stuff. Would really like to go see the show now that I've delved into the GD catalog.
Got a chance to visit Terrapin Crossroads this past fall while my wife was interviewing at a hospital. The place was awesome. A permanent hangout for 'Heads. We're moving to Nashville instead, but man I woulda loved to catch shows here regularly to catch some of that Dead magic. (~};}
Just Close the mouths, just hear and listen to the genious improvisations - enjoy this timelesse music! (The dis-likers can be quiet and pass to another canal!)
does it ever concern, people using phone video might be missing the whole experience? know I'm guilty, but there are some times when you just gotta dance around.
Matt R C like the other guy said, hitting and sliding through out-of-scale "wrong" notes is J.G.'s style. It becomes exquisite when they're squeezed just right...
I think his Fenders fit better to his sound...the PRS sounds a lil hard to me.. but maybe its the recording. Nice to see him play in small clubs like this one again!
I think he's getting killer tones out of the prs, it's a little like Jimmy Herring's tone, and think he's just using a deluxe reverb, not my favorite amp, but I think the tones he's getting are awesome
Never in my wildest dreams did i think the your body is a wonderland guy would be the one to carry the dead into the 21st century. LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!
Justin Zmich I said these EXACT WORDS my friend! Seen D&C four times now and already got my tickets for both Boulder shows in July. Love it!
You took the words out of every open minded music lover. He's gone, and his little speech was gut wrenching. Enjoy it while we can.
Raymond Jones what time does the speech start?
@Teaeli Anderson Coming from the person who's favorite artist is Jack Johnson. John Gayer blowz
When the Boyz added Mayer to the band , I thought they had gone crazy !!! But look at him now 😁
I'm so happy Phil got a new liver and didn't die.
The guy can do anything. The best of his generation.

John Mayer has turned himself into one of the best guitarist around these days. He really sounds great with Phil and his band.
I hope this becomes an album. Mayer's guitar fans have been waiting for years for an album where he doesn't hold back on his instrument.

Seeing Phil back there with a huge grin tells you all you need to know!
Neil Waudby You nailed it. Phil's face throughout the 2 days while Mayer was in his solos sold me.
Exactly!
Dead and company Pt. 2 Phil & John
Rest in Peace, Phil.

This has nothing to do with "Dead & Co". This is a great band. Harmonies, dynamic tempo, listening to each other, the works. This is fantastic.
Every few years I feel like I'm watching Mayer for the first time. In a way that there's a semi-reinvention that makes him appear "exposed", vulnerable, or accessible - and then he just Butt-f#ck's it to complete mastery, taking whatever he was doing to a whole new level and yet still connecting to the original intimacy of the idea. timmalloy2008 i agree with you
I tend to agree with their choice.

Ever....
The mark of a true musician. He's a lot like Clapton in the way he goes through different phases and it's all good.
He's like if you took the emotion and creative range of Hendrix but refined it down to the simplicity of Clapton.
Fantastic! I love how fluid it is! I miss this vibe! More of us should be keeping this style alive!! I think i need to go jam tonight heh..
NEVER get tired of this ol' classic and they did it better than ever here in my professional Dead critic estimation. Way t go fellas
. Pretty dank shit
Love you Phil! Love Terrapin Crossroads!!!! Wish Wish Wish Wish.....
Very cool version of sugaree. Sure do miss Phil with the boys, would like to at least have oteil be an equal member up in the live sound mix like Phil always was, but would also be awesome to have him come to a couple shows this summer! Also Mayer is the man
This is fantastic. Going to see Dead & Co. in a few days. Can't wait.
What a treat, that was.
When you get a thumbs up from Phil, you're doing things!
Love it. Definitely heard Dead influence on a few tracks from Paradise Valley, glad to see this progression.
Phil get on the road with Dead and co. please!!!!!
Trillion percent co-sign!!!
omg how did one get an invite to this bar?? yes long live the dead, amen to that, dead and company is a like a fat ass snack after a good buzz late into the nite, enjoyed the hell out of this video,
No invite needed….you just walk right in…..
I have just listened into this one. Not sure if again today for the first time I am going to have to scroll down and change the pages to find out if I was already a visitor here and a commentator.
12 minutes in...loving it! Was anxious to see/hear some of this show and what a bonus to see Ross James!! Thank you!
Little Johnny Mayer...
Makin Sugaree his own!!!
DAMN!!!
A wonderful John Mayer.
Yummy, sweet, guitar pudding. I hope John really lets loose on the guitar on his next album. He needs to release a jam centered album. That would be epic.
Ross James kills it!
Amen
ohhhhhh nice........ Refreshingly new and yet JG is floating in the wings for sure......
Very cool.
Finally John! Please share with the world your guitar-playing talent. I saw you at Red Rocks a couple of years ago (13th row) and I know it is immense. Let loose man!
Goosebumps!
and this is like my 13th time listening/watching it!!! I LOVE IT!!!
No doubt.....Ross James is killing it
.
i can't believe how good this is!
Everyone's hanging in NorCal for the BIG, HUGE event!!! & Phil is thoroughly enjoying himself!
John Mayer sings better every time I hear him. He is still becoming what he is going to be.
Really hoping that the Dead&Co Summer tour doesn't get cancelled on account of this Covid-19 stuff. Would really like to go see the show now that I've delved into the GD catalog.
Double "wow" - his phrasing is really facking sweet. Way to go John !!!!! :)
Quite a pleasant surprise. By George, I think he's got it.
lol
Don't get any better than this
Got a chance to visit Terrapin Crossroads this past fall while my wife was interviewing at a hospital. The place was awesome. A permanent hangout for 'Heads. We're moving to Nashville instead, but man I woulda loved to catch shows here regularly to catch some of that Dead magic. (~};}
Mayer is great.....But Dam, Phil still got it. Man can groove.
AGAIN ONE JOHN MAYER MAGISTRAL IN THIS JAM"S HISTORIC THANKS GUY"S. .. JACKYFAN 👍
possibly the inception of the Dead and Co. tour? or possibly early practices
Mayer does sound good. He making it his own while still playing recognizable Sugaree grooves!✌
He's doing it better today. Today being the last time with D&C
Just Close the mouths, just hear and listen to the genious improvisations - enjoy this timelesse music! (The dis-likers can be quiet and pass to another canal!)
Love him...hate him...he's still an amazing performer!
Sounds sublime 👌
bobby (amasing), johm meyer and o'teil are the reason why dead and company are the best. long live the music
This is incredible.
does it ever concern, people using phone video might be missing the whole experience?
know I'm guilty, but there are some times when you just gotta dance around.
Awesome Venue for sure !
The power of mixolydian is strong with you John
So good @ 10min!
s good see Mayer becoming a singer deadhead ! i,m pleased with clear cut sound , so like Europe 72 kinda ....
Love this
I looked up in the upper left corner at 19:18 Guy was grooving the whole show!!!
Fantastic...Love the John Mayer Dead
DAYUM!! that boy's good !!!
Amazing stuff!
I want to see a Terrapin Crossroads video where Phil plays with John Mayer and Holly Bowling. That Ross James guy isn't a slouch either.
10:13 the chills. Damn, that was tasty
Brandon Look what, from the dozen mistake he just made? That was sloppy.
Matt R C Thats the dead sound old fart!
Matt R C like the other guy said, hitting and sliding through out-of-scale "wrong" notes is J.G.'s style. It becomes exquisite when they're squeezed just right...
William Moser
That's not what i was talking about. Watch it again
dude. SERIOUSLY
Since the beginning of the "Dead & Company Tour" we know what is possible!
I think his Fenders fit better to his sound...the PRS sounds a lil hard to me.. but maybe its the recording. Nice to see him play in small clubs like this one again!
NE$ - U.S. may be the new amps. Not playing through the dumble two rock rig.
I think he's getting killer tones out of the prs, it's a little like Jimmy Herring's tone, and think he's just using a deluxe reverb, not my favorite amp, but I think the tones he's getting are awesome
