He's always been able to play a great blues lick (even if it was derivative of SRV to some degree - which is not a bad thing!), but since playing with Dead and Company he has matured into a truly great well rounded guitarist. Even comparing this clip to his most recent stuff you can see the evolution. Huge respect to him - long may he play!
@@Sosu217 John mentioned in an interview about how he was working to get better on the guitar for the first time in 15 years trying to learn the Dead music catalog.
People don't want to admit because Mayer played popular pop music but to anyone who knows anything about guitarists Mayer is Berklee trained musician and could play anything he put his mind to....people need to get over themselves Mayer can rock and his phrasing on this song is off the charts.
I’ve been watching this video at least once a day for quite some time. In my opinion this is some of John’s tastiest playing. Since he started touring with dead and company, my life has been complete.
Yeah, man, way to nail it. "Tasty" is a perfect word. As I'm listening to this it's interesting to compare the two guitar players. The first guy (don't know who he is yet) is obviously a great, great player, and it's really cool to see John really digging what he's playing. His style is very licks based, like he's pulling different tricks out of a bag, and that's cool. But John's playing feels so much more lyrical, like his guitar is actually singing, which feels a lot more "Jerry."
Who said he wasn't getting respect and attention? He obviously is getting that by the fact that Phil chose him to be there. Why is it that some members of the community take every chance to eat at Mayer even passively?
In restrospect, this moment, these shows, on the cusp of FTW and the subsequent renaissance of this scene, will go down in history. “Now the die is shaken, now the die must fall”. This is the shaking of those dice. Can’t help but wonder if these nights may have been the final dice to convince John to try the D&C project. And the rest, as they say, is history...
it's one of the pieces.... John playing on TV with Bob.... and jm and bw went to Coachella together that year, surely some seeds toward what would become D&C were germinating.
@@AP-ui7oi lol oh my bad I guess I was already supposed to know that, there's nothing John Mayer could do now to make me realize again that he's great at playing guitar.
My son turned me on to Mayer's guitar-playing 15 years ago. Since then, I've discovered that he's one of the best out there...almost under the radar to many.
Phil is such a freaking beast on the bass. He shreds that thing like he's playing lead guitar. Only other bass player that reminds me of his energy is Jack Bruce.
I'm not a huge John Mayer fan. I liked his playing here better than I expected, this is maybe the best I've heard from him so far. He strikes me as a student of Jerry Garcia that still has a long way to go.

I think the real reason is because not all of the original core four members get along. Mickey has publicly stated his dislike for Lesh. Bob Weir said in 2014 that the band owed it the fans to get over their inner quarrels and honor their legacy of 50.
If you read up especially in Billy's autobiography, you learn Phil was quite the pain in the ass. He tried to get rid of just about everyone except for Jerry of course. I love Phil, but he doesn't play nice with others.
I heard phil needs a liver or needed one and probably could handle a dead and co tour due to failing health but sounds like phil is more of a prick than john
Incredible performances, horrible recording/sound quality. If this was mic'ed correctly, and run through the board properly (before out to the PA) it really could have been an epic recording. That Mayer guy's not bad ;-)
Thank you Johnny boy for bringing us back together this past 10 years… The man is smiling down 😊
Never really listened to Mayer's music. He's better than I thought. His style definitely fits in here.

i think its wonderful for true ' grateful dead heads that johns hear to keep this great music going! peace
This is so awesome, John is jamming his ass off & Phil is just very happy, thank you!!
Great song and I love the amazing collab between John Mayer and Phil Lesh. Love it. Love them
This is a really, truly, righteous moment. Phil's enthusiasm is wonderful to see. Love y'all
This is a wonderful version that has a nice upbeat tempo with some great guitar work! I love jamming to this version, fun fun fun!
You can tell these guys are loving it! Me too.....
Mayer is a truly great blues guitarist as well
I'm so happy to see this 😘
Pay it forward Johnny Boy...//
9:43 JM goes to talk first after they finish but pulls back and gives it to Phil. You can tell the huge respect he has for an OG.
The other guitar player certainly played excellent as well and deserves respect and attention as well.
ROSS JAMES! Lots of his work on my channel

NO CHIT! 🫡 OL BOY PUTTIN’ WORK ✊💀
I agree John Mayer is his name. 😆
That bass player is awesome
lol
Bet he’s been to a few shows 🌹
'That bass player...' yeah, right.
Rest in Peace, Phil. 10-25-24 🎸💔🎵
Just seeing this. That smile on Phil's face!
So much love for this.. Amazing seeing John n Phil play together!
Never saw Phil happier.

Perfect! I miss you Riders!
I keep coming back to this. This is some fantastic footage. Such lucky people to be present at this..damn.
Ross James texted me minutes before and said "get int the bar NOW!"
Phil, always happy....❤
Cant wait to see this in person
Bravo Johnny !
I read where John stated he had over 200 guitars in his personal collection.
I would bet he still has plenty of Fenders.
I just noticed that John switches between playing with a pick and using his thumb and index finger. That's pretty damn cool.
Holy hell Mayer is so good at ripping it up, god damn
Do you live under a rock???

Welcome to The Dead Family!😎
Phil has him on his toes and I’m 30 seconds in
Sick . Both guitars went off the freaking reservation. Yea man get it. !!!!!!!!
Best version of I know you rider in my personal opinion. Sorry Jerry. Not a Mayer fanboy btw
Miiiissssing Terrapin Crossroads. =
Who the guy on the telli ? He’s crazy good
Ross James is his name
this is i know your rider
John Mayer is fillin' your mailorders now.
Ok were is Phil!,,
The PRS Mayer git is a Strat!
excellent version !
Mayer playing a Paul Reed Smith ?
He's not a fender guitar player anymore
John Mayer has enough money to play what he wants but he likes playing hollow PRS guitars for the dead/jerry thing 👍
Holy Shreddies!!!🤟🤟🤟
Mayer is a badass...no question...
That was really fucking cool
Anybody know what kind of tuner John is using on his guitar?
It is a little Snark Tuner. Powered by a watch battery. Not expensive. I have one, they really work well.
The beginning
Holy fn S nice old telecaster there.
Modded to the max.

The best shows have Phil loud in the mix.
Anybody know what is on the head of john's guitar?
MrMusicM67 it's a clip on tuner, not sure why he has it consider he's using a tuner pedal.
MrMusicM67 It is a Snark
Guess i expect too much from PROFESSIONALS
can't please everyone.
When he checks his ego at the door he’s Dead to me. I hear he’s the reason Phil didn’t play with dead and co the seem cool to me

Jerry Garcia I didn’t know that, I also didn’t know you can watch UA-cam in heaven. Say hi to my dad for me
I will. Love the name Spotted Cow btw. Reminds me of an old friend.

everyone's a critic. i capture what I do on the tech that I have. thanks for tuning in.
JM plays the wrong scale in the wrong mode. He’s still good though.
Check out Bruce Hornsby's version of this.
what did phil whisper to him, i wonder?
Something to tell him he was kicking into "Rider". They were just jamming on a D chord up to that point.
He told him he could play some lead.
mi ok he whispered remember Johnny your only a man
Play first
Damn good. Only been more better if it was a china into rider.
Not sure who the other guitarist is, but I find his playing much more creative and coherent. He's playing his ass off, and it's delightful to follow.
His name is John Meyer
Yeah I realize that. I mean the bearded guy. He's really got something to say.
Had to play it at 1.5 - 2x speed to make it sound right. They are playing it way to slow.
I think Phil knows how it should go personally.
This isn't bluegrass man...
I put it at 1.5 and that is way to fucking fast
I think Phil has earned the right to play it anyway he wants.
Ignorance is bliss.
