And You haven't even gotten to "Sound Chaser", and "To Be Over", also Masterpieces from Relayer. Then when you get to YESSONGS, you can be blown away all over again, by the
musicianship of YES LIVE. To not only re=create lengthy Masterpieces Live, but enhance them, and add to them, and transcend the studio version. There aren't many that can do that.

Tales From Topographic Oceans is 4 songs each taking up an lp side the shortest being a little over 18 minutes and the longest 22. It was released after YESSONGS and before Relayer. Speaking of YESSONGS Chod would you please play Long Distance Runaround/The Fish from that amazing live album? The Fish showcases Chris Squire on what I consider the greatest bass solo ever.

Chod, I hope you get to read this. I’ve been a fan of Yes for close to 40 years now. As much as you’ve enjoyed their songs from your first time hearing them, I just HAVE to tell you that these songs get better with each time you listen to them again. Their music is epic, and there’s so much going on that things catch your ear, that you’ll actually miss other things going on in the music. You could be listening to one of their songs for the 20th time, and hear something you never noticed before. I sincerely hope you find the time to re-listen to each of their songs you have reacted to. Once again, LOVE this channel and the amazing followers that bring such variety to the table. Thank you Chod, and a heartfelt thanks to all the followers here!

That was a nice surprise. "That, That Is" is one of the "overlooked" songs by Yes, but for me it is in the same league as "Awaken" and "Gates Of Delirium". Yes has definitely waned over the years. While practically every song on the early albums was a small or large "pearl", the later albums also contain a lot of "mediocrity". But besides the big songs like "Mind Drive" (you'll like), "Endless Dream" and for me the 6-part "Fly From Here" there are still plenty of "smaller pearls" to discover on the newer albums.

You are right, Yes is the best. This song doesn't get talked about much, it gets kind of lost among so much amazing stuff. Try "In The Presence Of" or "Give Love Each Day" from Yes's Magniciation album, the whole album was created from scratch with an orchestra. Also their solo albums.

Part of the reason for the different sound on this track is that Chris Squire is using a piccolo bass, an octave higher than a standard bass. He's playing the fast, funky underlying riffs which almost sound like guitar that form the rhythmic basis of the song. There are many more tracks to explore from different eras. As far as long form pieces go, apart from the four mighty movements of Tales From Topographic Oceans, you could try Homeworld from The Ladder album.

Chod,, I love that you are so into them that you can call the song “Gates”, Chod as someone who’s been listening YES for 50 years plus, you just need to let it flow. To answer your question about lengthy songs the difference with YES is that they’yre members are so good and truly are some of the greatest of musicians from the 60’s,70’s,80’s, 90’s, 20’s and belong. amongst the greatest band believe the next song you should listen to by YES is America live in the studio in the early 70’’s it will just show you how greatness flowed and flowered through the Progresiva Rock Band YES. Thanhs again Chod as a 62 year man I relish that you have taken the time to listen to THE WONDERs OF YES.. GOD BLESS YOU you should try to do an interview with Lead singer Jon Anderson he’s very personable, he lives with his wife Jane in the mountains of Central Coast California near San Luis Obispo, I May have a way of hooking you up with Jon I believe he’d love to talk with you as much as you seem curious of the band’s writing prowess, my name is Barry Sanchezi live in the Atlanta, Ga. region & I have a good fan who may je able to set up an interview with Jon if you are interested? Just finished listening to your great reaction. I get why you feel YES doesn't have one sound, seeing which pieces you've reacted to. Everything seems very different, and they are. However, YES, for the most part, absolutely has a very distinct sound, which you will come to understand with future listens, but all of YES music can be explained in just 4 words; words that are lyrics in one of their EPICS, and those 4 words are 'Disjointed, but with purpose'. That perfectly summarizes the music of YES, and that is their distinctive sound.
Oh, and just so you know, YES has 11 EPICS (15+ minutes). Enjoy 🙂

    Great reaction Chod, thank you.
So you like to be surprised with something different? Ok, time to move on to Endless Dream. This is Yes in the nineties with what for me is one of their greatest compositions. This has Trevor Rabin in place of Steve Howe on guitar but Rabin brings his own unique style which has its own greatness. Fans are divided on this as you would imagine but treating it in its merit, I absolutely love it.
Another great track mentioned below is Mind Drive. Now this will have some added attraction for you as it was originally written during the short life of 'XYZ' Ex Yes and Zeppelin which was Jimmy Page, Chris Squire and Alan White together. Unfortunately they didn't quite hit it and broke up before the album was finished but a couple of tracks resurfaced as finished works, Mind Drive being one of them.
Keep it up Chod, loving it 😊👍

LMAO!!!!! Hahahahaha......lol......hahahaha............Every song by Yes is lengthy and Epic....the thing you should know now is that Yes created concept albums and Epic songs on those albums that bleed into another. They didn't create hit singles.....they did songs.....no matter what the length that's why they were not in the mainstream of music. Like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin it was about the message of the music taking the listener to another world and that took time......so we did not buy singles from Yes or Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin....we bought the WHOLE album and listened to the entire album several times. However, You may want to react to "The Revealing Science of God." It's a Masterpiece!!! Don't forget to react to "Endless Dream" by Yes. released in 1994...it's another masterpiece.too!!!

It's hard to believe that Keys to Ascension came out 25 years ago. I remember picking it up from the CD store the day it came out and was really excited because it was the first Yes album with the classic AWWHS lineup since 1978. I still consider this one of their newer albums, even though more time has passed since this came out than had passed between Fragile and this album. I like that they were going for the classic proggy sound with a bit of a modern edge. The intro to the song is quite possibly the most beautiful thing Howe has written and I love the way it transitions into the faster section. The song does lose me a bit in the middle as it meanders through the different sections, but the ending redeems with their lightning fast jams. Definitely one of my favorite of the latter day Yes songs. Mind Drive is even better though.

This song at first is a little hard to take in because of so many ideas that have such contrasts. But, sometimes it's great to think about the creativity and the emotions Yes is striving for. Yes has many great long songs, but a couple of them from the album, Tales From Topographic Oceans, though interesting and classic in their own way, as a fan since 1972, I can say they do drag a little bit in parts. But, virtually all their other long songs are terrific and aren't in the least bit boring. Yes even made a great album in their later years with a full orchestra accompanying the band called, Magnification, which is amazing. You should react to the title track. I ask, Wilburn, because next year I will be cycling around the UK in memory of my wonderful, beautiful late wife, Karen, trying to raise money for charity, for the RSPB and ACORNS CHILDRENS' HOSPICE in Birmingham and I want to have loads of fun whilst doing so. I adore YES. Always have done and seen them, met them and continue to sing along to YES songs (Silent Wings of Freedom) every day - and the fabulous offshoots from YES. Try Violet Purple Rose as a 'reaction' video for instance. Anyway when cycling around the UK, I have done this for three whole years and also cycled up and over the Andes in Peru for four months in 2018, I sing! Next year, after being shown my first 'reaction' video by my brother ast week, I thought, perfect, fun and UA-cam, a great combination. So Wilburn, please email me with as much advice you can give, well, until you lose the will to live in telling a 65 year old YES (OK, and Frank Zappa - try Inca Roads by Frank, Wilburn) how to do these things. If you help your name will be sailing on high. All the best and keep doing them. Gary B. Prescott aka The Biking Birder email : bikingbirder2010@hotmail.com

Wow so glad you reacted to this. Cuddos to the one who sponsored it. Another good long one is "The Revealing Science of God". I like the live version on the Keys to Ascention album best. You've done many of the best ones. No one's reacted to "Don't Kill the Whale". It's not a long one but it's the one that got my girlfriend hooked on YES. SAVE THE WHALES!

If every song rates 100, how can one song be better than another? Each to his own but collectively, we are Yes fans, each with his own. Good review, as always. Your strength is that you know music and don't babble like many other reviewers.

It is a great song. Next time you listen to it, try to follow Squire the whole way through as the primary instrument. Don't worry, everything comes together but listening to Squire lead the way makes it even more amazing.

A song about gang crime, crack addiction, low socio-economic class, Julie, Shirley... ???
    Hilarious subject matter from Yes.
But that Howe guitar motif at the beginning, and the dreamy mid section is oh so divine.

This my favorite of the later, post-Tormsto compositions, this and Fly From Here. Most of the reactioners like to break down the music and the instrumentations and overlook the lyrics. The lyrics of this song are especially strong, and provide a message for the musicians to build strong, emotional themes that, like the lyrics, tackle the most rare and difficult to articulate subjects: the breakdown of contemporary urban culture in Europe and the United States. Howe's guitar in the tender introduction is soulful, and Squire's bass in the running climactic jams hold those together.
Chod, as you get to know YES better, you'll be able to pick out Chris Squire's base, Steve Howe:s guitar, Bill Brufotd's drums and Rick Wakeman's keyboards easily -- their most classic lineup along with Jon Anderson's vocals which you already mentioned. It's harder for you because you're starting at the deep end, with two of their most uncompromising songs for which I give you credit for! Rock on!

You'll find out Chod that there will be many Yes songs that you will have a hard time not rating them the best or your favorite. One thing that makes Yes the greatest is their longevity. This song came out 22 years after Gates of Delirium. The masterpieces just keep coming.

    huh.
I admit it, I totally missed the Yes era immediately after Big Generator through Magnification or The Ladder, whichever came later. I returned to them via concerts with Benoit David and Jon Davidson, but no album listens. So, this was a first listen for me as well.
All I can say at the moment, without doing another listen is:
    "Yes meets Mike Oldfield?"

The studio tracks from Keys To Ascension don´t have enough appreciation among the fans, I think. Great that someone suggested this one. There´s another really good one called Mind Drive from the same album. I hope we get to hear it with you one day. But this was a great surprise today. I have to add there something to that comparison to Gates Of Delirium. I can´t say that This song is better or worse than The Gates... but for some reason I tend to listen more often to That, That Is.

More great music from Yes. 22 years after Gates of Delerium, the only difference in the lineup is Wakeman back on keys instead of Moraz.
Now that you have done several lengthy Yes compositions, you might want to try Tarkus or Karn Evil 9 (all three impressions) by ELP or perhaps Suppers Ready by Genesis, a few other 20+ minute prog epics from the classic prog era.

This was an interesting recommendation - slightly obscure (in the Yes catalog), but definitely the superior of the two epics they came up with for the Key sessions. (It was however the other, Mind Drive, that got performed live).
Structurally one of the most off-the-wall Yes moments since Sound Chaser - and not coincidentally Steve and Alan brought some refreshingly different ideas, to match Jon's lyrics which are also out-of-character and (for him) brave.
