If you’re wondering, be bold, it’s done. With the time you spend changing or”fixing” you might get a good start on the next one.
Like you say, come back to it later.
Put it on the back burner.
Great video, thank you for your experience and advice.

Sometimes, thinking is overrated. Go with your gut. Chances are your first idea is the best.
Once you know the rules, then you can break them with intent.
Plan three steps ahead. Then three more. When you get close to what you think is the end, drop the last step.
    Don't panic, it's just paint.
I paint small and miniature in oil, sometimes acrylic. I measure in inches, not in feet. Mistakes can go unseen, especially late at night. I don't let anything go as done for at least a week. If a mistake is there, it shows and I throw it away.

The phone trick actually works! I use this method often actually. I think it might be by looking at the piece on your cellphone, its from a different angle than what your used to seeing with the naked eye and thats how it changes the way it looks. It might also be the backlight of our phones.
I recently subscribed to your channel! I love your tips and you inspire me. I hope one day I can be a full time artist like you are ! ^_^

I discovered the camera trick myself while I was doing a colored pencil portrait. I would take progress pics with my iPhone to message to someone and was shocked at the problems I would see with it in the iPhone pic that I didn't see looking at the piece itself. Weird. I was excited to hear from someone else who does the same. Sometimes I will actually print out the pic taken from my iPhone and just write notes on it to work from when improving or correcting the original.

That's a great idea, Ann - writing notes to work from....I'll have to try that ☺️

I feel my paintings are finished when they have a coherent picture with all the elements fitting together. Also the painting have to give the desired effect that I wanted it to have from the beginning. Then I would sign it and even if I think it could do with more detail, I have promised myself, that a signed painting is DONE.
I wish you a good weekend from Denmark

I have such an issue with the feeling that no piece is ever done. I over work them to the point I don’t like them anymore, then walk away from it never to complete it. Artistic minds, I guess. Thank you for sharing your insights & for letting me know I’m not alone in this.

I rarely think about finished art....but I always analyse my art by taking photo of my art....putting aside the reference photo in Microsoft word....then comment objectively as third person with my checklist. Checklist has..... Drawing or perspective, value check, saturation, colour harmony, brush work or the stroke ...etc. this helps me but I always felt there was ...some online experts standard organisation which critiqued my work regularly. Hope such things come up in future.😊

Usually I take a picture of my painting and send it (whatsapp)to my father and my brother. My brother is very honest and yes it is true, on the foto you see the thing's that have to be changed.

Hi Ellen... all good points especially the use of your cell phone, I'll have to give that one a try. One thing I do is go back to it once or twice a day for several days and "re-look" at it each time. I find that I notice things I never see after working on it for hours. It adds time to a client's project but it is worth it. Thanks for your thoughts.

I know if I've been working on something for a while, and I have the thought "I think it would be cool if I tried....." I need to STOP. LOL. not that you shouldn't experiment, but when I have that thought and I feel like it's 80% done or more I need to pump the breaks 👍😅. Great tips thanks for the video!

I struggle with reaching the conclusion the painting is complete. Taking photographs is the best way to take a different look to find if something is missing or to decide it's done. Another tip is to take it off the easel and hang on a wall. Just a change in perspective makes all the difference.

Thanks for great videos Ellen. As I newbie to the biz of art I've learned more from you than anyone else.
I paint a lot at night, sometimes late into the night with fervor. Its always a surprise in the morning after I've had my coffee and come over to the studio. Did I do something good? Is it done? Sometimes I'm so happy and can see its done. Other times I can't understand what I was thinking the night before. Most often I see I need to pick up the brush, or maybe take a picture and test out some ideas on my ipad, and then pick up the brush and go forward. Overpainting can be a plague but I have some paintings I've worked with on and off for 5 years and they finally turned into something I never would have expected and I love. Other times I've had a dream, wake up, paint it, and first time through it is perfect. "Kennedy in Hawaii" on my insta is like that. Most often it is the hard and fun work of experimenting and finding the path. Thanks again. @HF_2056

Thanks for another valuable vid Ellen. Your fourth point was especially meaningful to me. When I was a young engineer my boss drilled into us that the “enemy of good enough is better”. (Funny - it turns out the quote is attributed to a former Soviet navy admiral named Sergey Gorshkov - who knew!) But it’s true with art. At the end of my recent piece Daffodilis I actually asked the painting “so how do you feel yellow painting?” and it said “sign me already”. So I did :) Bill

A photo is a static image, it is finite and you can't add to or cover up the painting. When you are working on a painting you have a tendency to add things that your mind thinks of and you ruin a painting by adding things that don't need to be in the painting. I've ruined a few paintings that I should have left alone...
