I can never get enough of this rendition......... this is by far the best best quality rendition. What a pairing of Joan and the Funk Bros. Absolute magic!!!!!!
I first saw "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" (in the late-lamented Guild 45th theater here in Seattle) when the movie was first released At the end of Joan Osborne's cover of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted", the movie theater audience immediatley burst into a wild round of loud cheering and applause which eneded with the entire theater audience giving her a standing ovation - in a movie theater - right in the middle of the movie!! Never experienced anything remotely like that in a movie theater before or since. But it was absolutely the perfect response at the perfect moment.
Being a bass player and Jamerson devotee { Babbitt was no slouch on bass either - as he so amply demonstrates here } I watched the SITSOM movie with a great deal of enthusiasm and was completely blown away, especially by this performance. The song is timeless. Joan Osborn is stellar. The band is magnificent. One of the greatest live performances of a Motown hit, EVER and the very essence of great soul music. Jimmy Ruffin would be proud. 🙂
Can I get an amen on this? Pittsburgh’s own Bobby Babbitt is indeed no slouch. These legends as with the infamous Wrecking Crew will never come this way again. We were blessed to have lived this music and I’m so happy to see more of it preserved for future generations. So that they will know how it’s done! Goosebumps watching this!
Crush with a capital C. I got to thinking who could pull this off other than her and not muck it up. Hayley Williams from the debunked band Paramore. Could keep it on autoplay all day.....
Ms. Joan absolutely now OWNS this song !! When I first saw the movie ("STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN") everybody in the audience stood up & cheered at the end !! I couldn't remember the last time so many people were touched by a movie !! I stayed and watched it a 2nd time - the same thing happened !! Finally THE FUNK BROTHERS were getting their long overdue recognition. DID THEY STILL HAVE IT ?? THEY WILL...FOREVER !! God bless you Joan.
Absolutely one of the best, if not the best, live covers of a classic that I've ever heard in my life.. The Funk Brothers still had it twenty years ago, and Joan Osborne, with her inspired, raspy voice ranging all over the song, is just spine tingling. Absolute perfection - and done live to boot. Try replicating that energy and sublime performance in a studio with autotune. I double-dog dare anyone.
You can never replicate that kind of energy in a studio. After this (at the time) new revision, kinda hard to top that! Brings me to tears everytime I watch this!
@@AnitaMariaWhite Wow. I didn't think anyone remembered A.J. Calhoun. However, the phrase was used in "A Christmas Story". with the kid getting his tongue frozen to the basketball pole, on a double dog dare.
When something comes off perfectly, you sense it in your core, even if you can't verbalize the feeling. This is perfect. I must have watched this a hundred times, and every time it just guts me. Wonderful cover by Joan and the Funk Brothers!
Just sensational on every level, vocals, musicianship, arrangement , the complete package !! Joan Osbourne posess a unique vocal tone that complements this performance perfectly.
I wonder what it's like to get welcomed by this group to sing with them? It has nothing to do with anything else other than you bringing what they want to the table and own it like a boss... She's one bad woman.... And she doesn't try to hack it up. She executes it perfect IMO....
Hard to believe it’s been 20 years since this was recorded for the amazing documentary, Standing in the Shadows of Motown. And now with Jack Ashford being the last surviving member of the Funk Brothers, this masterful performance all the more poignant.

I never get tired of listening to this one. Perfect Joan and the classy masters of soul.!!! Ii spent many years playing these tunes in bands. It's sad they didn't get paid better by Mr Gordy.
Berry Gordy left for LA and left some of his pioneering singers and the Funk Brothers behind, with no show of gratitude. As great a pioneer as he was, I will never forgive him for that.

Just saw a great intimate local performance by Joan with just a guitarist and keyboardist. Look for some great new songs on her upcoming album. But it drove me back here to see this again. This has legit claim to one of the best live songs ever recorded. Just breathtaking.
Joan Osborne is just an amazing singer... It's sad to think that most of these amazing musicians... If not all of them are gone now... They truly defined the '60s.. The funk Brothers truly were one of the greatest dance ever
Man oh man, does this song ever bring back old memories of the wondefuls times of my youth. Having nice lovely lady in my arms, slowly swaying to the music. Every once in awhile, they would place their hand on the back of my neck. Holy Cow! You guys out there know that feeling!

The Jimmy Ruffin original is marred by optimistic lyrics at the end. Joan didn't sing them and kept the message dark. Dark is good.
