    Glad to see that you are taking the time to try to refurbish what you can for reuse. I'm not sure that i would trust the one that was epoxied in any critical location though -- we tend to consider epoxy a cure all today. The fact that the block split indicates a weak area in the block -- the epoxy will likely not fail, but the wood that it is attached to on both sides of the connection may give away (it is likely what allowed for the split in the first place).

      I inspected that block pretty closely and found no evidence of rot or any other structural damage. Those blocks had been hanging off of the rigging, on the masts for the better part of 15 years without any maintenance. I think the wood just dried out and checked along the grain, as oak tends to do. You know your oak firewood is nice and dry when it's all checked like that.

    I will soon be refurbishing a bunch of blocks (including some Merrimans)... this clip will actually be very uyseful. Hadn't thought of using an ultrasonic cleaner- good idea!

      @SlowlySailing-lc1cs Awesome. The ultrasonic I have was only about a hundred bucks on Amazon and I've used the crap out of it over the past few years for all kinds of grungy old metal bits. It's a great investment for anyone who fixes anything that's old, mechanical, and metallic.

    Please invest in fire extinguishers. And I cringed when blowing air but no safety glasses. I know you know better.
    Good job on the blocks. Maybe consider putting them in a bucket filled with soup. Then cover. Some guys have used pvc pipe with caps instead of a bucket.
    Do you have hands to help when you spring in new planks?
    I see the quality of your videos has improved. Nice selections on music.

      @@seanmakesthings Thanks for watching! The blocks were set aside in the basement to dry after being submerged in boat soup probably 20 times. I haven't checked on them recently, but I'll film an update on them and include it in a future video. Maybe I'll dunk them again, since I've added some cetol to the soup.

      @@SavingMaverick55 Wow, how many soup cycles will they take before kinda hitting a ceiling of soaking up?

    • @SavingMaverick55
      @SavingMaverick55  3 місяці тому

      @@seanmakesthings I don't know. The wood was extremely dry and weathered and I want the blocks to be good to go for the long haul so I'll keep soaking them until it's clear that they won't take up any more.

    Couple tips on the ultrasonic cleaner. I use one a couple times a week. I prefer Branson fluid. It’s expensive but it’s diluted down around 10%. On temp I warm mine to 60c(140°F) as that’s the optimal temp for the above mentioned fluid and I suspect yours would work better if you got it hotter. Lastly you’re stacking things it won’t be as effective as the top things won’t get the ultrasonic waves.

    Have you check out salt and tar on they discuss on boat soup

      I watched their whole build and follow their weekly videos. The soup they made had a bunch of random finishes in it, but I opted to go totally traditional with about a 2:1 ratio of boiled linseed oil and pine tar. Works great.

    Those blocks are made of lign

    • @meganluke444
      @meganluke444 9 місяців тому

      Lignum Vitae, a dense, strong and rot-resistant wood. It is no longer available. Those blocks are irreplaceable so take good care of them.

    • @SavingMaverick55
      @SavingMaverick55  9 місяців тому

      @meganluke444 If you mean Lignum Vitae, I think your incorrect. The grain and ring structure, as well as the lack of oil in the wood strongly suggests that they're White Oak. There is a small one that appears to be teak, but I really doubt that any are made from lignum vitae.

    • @meganluke444
      @meganluke444 9 місяців тому

      @@SavingMaverick55 The blocks on Vagabond were Lignum vitae and came from Merriman and had the same logo. I guess they could have made them from oak as well,
