The main problem with VZR N1's, is that they are a racing engine inside a street chassis. The Type R Chassis are alot more suited to actual racing, better suspension setup, less weight, better gear raitios, and better lsd. Is not a suprise that the VZR's didnt sell well back in the day, considering they cost about $5000 more than a Civic Type R. Now don't get me wrong... I do love VZR's, have one myself. but it just isnt set up as good as the Civics. Great for Crusining, dropping to second and clutch kicking into NEOVVL. Will put a smile on anyones face.
Kieran Wyatt You could be onto something here dude. I personally think a big of it is down to the actual suspension layouts the two cars have. The Pulsar has MacPherson Strut on the and beam axle on the rear while the Civic has double wishbone all round; which might give the car an edge in handling and grip due to camber gain. The Pulsar suspension setup front and rear however would have been cheaper to manufacture but there are less parts to wear out and go wrong.
Actually they did sell good bro. All N1 pulsars gone in a day or a few days I think. BUT! Since they are limited in production unlike the type R which is a mass produced one it wasn't as accessible and popular. I liked the SR20VE more though, especially on a B13 chasis! ;) hehe.
The problem here isn't power or weight or suspension but thrust at the wheels over speed. Honda understood this and designed the typeR to give it's best acceleration over the rpm in gear - meaning when you change you're back into power. The VZR made more peak power but far less all the way upto it so coming off corners or after a gear change it's got nowhere near the wheel thrust. That means it's then playing catch up and by the time it starts to catch up it's gear change time - when the civic can put more thrust to the wheels again and so on. This is also why a lot of mildly tuned honda's make big power figures but don't go much faster than stock.
As a honda owner before, I had a chance to play with those "double vtec" Nissans with SR20VE, and wow their quick too! Especially compared to other variable timing from Japan like mitsu's mivec, or toyota vvti. Vtec and NeoVVL are the best in that category, simple.
Zenki Ev VVTI-L in Toyota’s 2zz-ge is a pretty crazy system too. The gearing in the transmissions used is also really good. It’s a shame Toyota didn’t put it in more cars. Only the Celica GTS, Matrix XRS and Corolla XRS got it. Fun engine.
I feel like for Mivec, it's better utilized and developed in V6 engines than the Inline 4 engines as I usually see guys with Mivec powered 4G63/4G69 Evo 9's that usually disable/disconnect it when they have higher power levels after they build them!
Great videos ... brotha keep them coming . The videos inspire me to keep building faster and faster honda engine's thanks again keep the honda scene alive. ......
nissan messed up on the handling on the pulsar. the engine was a group n race engine 200bhp....the civic was designed for track use with welded seams etc.u cant beat it on track.
Holy balls. 197 horsepower from a 1.6?! That's just madness. Where has all this wonderful engine performance gone? Now only a few naturally aspirated supercar engines are doing more than 100 horsepower per liter. This 1.6 has 123 hp/liter. Amazing. Meanwhile, Mazda can only squeeze out 155 horsepower out of a modern 2.0 liter high-compression engine. So sad.
maximus9401 The thing is, Mazda's 2 liter is a better engine to drive around town with its good torque curve to push 3000 lbs Mazda3 body and gets decent fuel economy as well. Which is what average customer wants. Enthusiast market is really small, and Nissan was likely losing money from making a specialized beast engine and low volume car. Basically, it has more to do with economics/business/demand than plain inability to manufacture tiny high revving engines.
maximus9401 And a Mazda RX-8 pushes out 231 HP from a Rotary that has 1.3L capacity ... Mazda never produced a high revving 1.6L in this era.. It was Rotarys ,V6s & Turbos with Mazda ..end off.. & their cars were & still a also ALOT nicer looking and still ARE than any of the competition from Japan. And terms of not hatchbacks from Japan..Mazda had the Rally breed 323/Famila GTR & GTX which would spank the shit outa both the EK9 Type R & the VZR..
Agree . I was never a fan of the RX8 myself . I found it abig step back from the FD RX7 , I would not buy one .. I would take the 3 or 6 MPS any day over it ..
Awesome! Seen this one before but the great English subs make it a hundred times better. Any chance you could do a few more Pulsar/SR16VE/SR20VE videos? TE-V Primera vs Torneo or GTIR/GTI Pulsar?
I love how the pulsar wasn't disqualified or something they just had a laugh and rolled with it, it was just like a fun little curveball, an extra challenge.
Very interesting how the driver states that he 'doesn't believe the catalogue figure' which compares with what VZ-R N1 owners have said about not being able to achieve the claimed 200ps on the rolling road. Anyway a great video and thanks for sharing, i'd be happy to own either of these cars!
Nissan tried to match the B16. Failed. Mitsubishi tried this. Failed. Toyota is the only one who managed to put a fight with the 4AGE engine. Yet I don't think the AE111 will catch up with the Type R :)
This was awesome. Do they ever start breaking down EXACTLY where the nissan begins to lose it's power advantage. The Civic seemed so well composed on that track it was like watching an old 80's buick race against a corvette. lol
only the itr has the 4.785:1 final drive and shorter gears, the ek9 ctr only has the same final and ratios as the ek4 but has an LSD. which is a total shame cause the smaller displacement ctr could have been much "better" so equipped.
Civic was a type R Turbo sports version. Pulsar was standard family car which happened to have a slightly more bhp without turbo charged. Pulsar GTIR is in the same league but far far superior.

You're correct in everyway accept for the pulsar has a viscous LSD, which offers more traction than the Helical LSD
Alex Rorrison They said the opposite in the video?
Johnny Salvattore it indeed does.

実際この当時以前からカタログスペックでは上回るパルサーもミラージュもシビックの敵じゃなかったからな

Alot of it has to do with the emissions here in the states. Japan still cranks these awesome n/a motors out on occasion.

And it has worse gas mileage than an V6 Nissan 3.5 litre engine while making less power. The RX8 is a dog!

because it lost at the take off. he mentioned it not having traction, but peak torque is at top of power band.

you put a SR16VE in the civic it will be faster simple.
Yep all of those failed except the toyota's 4AGE Engine
But Ill take both the toyota and the honda any day
Put a K24 and it'll be even faster
Эти автомобили хоть и выглядят одинаково но абсолютно разные и под разные задачи и оба одинаково хороши👍👍👍
Pulsar cheated and still had the Civic on his ass XD
Thanks bro! Nice video
thank you so much for ths video and the subtitles! if I could I would give this video 10 likes

Well, SR16VE is actually great engine...but the sole engine is not enough.
Stock honda civic type r ek chassis too good, b16b 185HP taking on nismo tuned pulsar VZ-R N1 SR16VE 197HP both cars are very good

I'm sad Nissan discontinued the vz series
I think it has to do with Civic 4.7 :1 Final Drive ratio and shorter 2, 3, 4 gears
CTR had 4.4 FD
only the itr has the 4.785:1 final drive and shorter gears, the ek9 ctr only has the same final and ratios as the ek4 but has an LSD. which is a total shame cause the smaller displacement ctr could have been much "better" so equipped.
Victor Pla Nein. Has to do with the Civic sounding like a Fireblade though:)
Victor Pla civic has 4.4
