I get so tired of hearing the same Christmas music over and over. It gets old like the second day, and retail things it's the shopping soundtrack the day after Halloween. This would be a breath of fresh air without destroying the spirit.
Ragtime Oh Holy Night is my favorite of the three by quite a bit, but I am VERY impressed with how you managed to fit Carol of the Bells into Ragtime. It's so fast to begin with that fitting in all those extra notes seems extremely difficult! ;;;>.
Word! I have a deep love for the song as part of my love of classical music as it hits me the same way as a lot of classic church hymns, but this verison was great. He's very talented and adapting music.
I think that ragtime has its place. I am conflicted because each of your chosen melodies is so dear to me in its original form. That being said, these ragtime versions could be used in films where a fast-paced scene is warranted to create a sense of excitement or as a subdued background, especially Carol of the Bells.
Bloody Hell's bells! I cannot believe what I have just seen and heard. Jonny May is fantastic and he plays almost faster than I can listen! I'd really love to hear his Rag Time version of the Chopin third movement to his Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor..................."Funeral March." "Rock on, Jonny!"
🤣 Many years ago I saw a skit in very bad taste in which Chopin worked out the tempo for the Funeral March. As you can tell from the fact I remember it over half a century later, it was vey funny.
Jonny I have an idea for next video: 3 nursery rhymes you should never play in ragtime. Instant examples - rock a bye baby, lullaby and good night, twinkle twinkle little star. Or 3 cartoon (not anime) themes you "should never" play in ragtime. Instant examples are Rugrats, Care Bears and Baby Looney Tunes.
I love your sense of humour and I love these ragtime arrangements. I'm a church organist and have to play these in more or less original form every year and I'm sick and tired of them. I'll take your lead and try some of them in ragtime, it might just set a new standard! By the way, your playing is fantastic, thank you.
I was at a wedding once where the organist (a friend, very gifted musically) played the bride in to a heavily-disguised rendition of The Stripper. Four or five people in the congregation ‘got it’. We were helpless.
@@richardbrookman6415 Years ago I was at a wedding where the bride was a teddy bear collector. The recessional began with a pompous bit of classical music and segued into The Teddy Bear's Picnic. The bride didn't know it was coming, but she and a quarter of those present cracked up. The other three-quarters were very confused.
Your execution is so amazing that I don't see here any Christmas song that should never be played in ragtime. I play Kristen Mosca's Silent Night version and I simply find it to be the happy version of that song. All the tunes you played were extremely happy, I don't see any fault with that. Great work.
Awesome. We had a 103 yr old friend in N Idaho who loved playing old ragtime tunes, but I don't remember her ever playing Christmas Carols that way. So cool, thank you for sharing!
I worked nearly 20 years in retail, and the holidays are the hardest time to be there. Listening to Christmas music All day, every day, from November till January. I just didn't want to hear it at family events. This is a whole new twist on the same old thing!
I remember the good old days when Jonny’s ragtime would shake the shelves and we thought the candle was going to fall on his head. 😂 Merry Christmas Jonny!
Here's the thing,.. They all work in ragtime. Switching time signatures aside, the songs translated perfectly, as they do when played using jazz, country, rock or any other genre. It's a cool exercise to take what's familiar and mash it into a different waffle iron. This was super fun. Kudos.
Something something, "joyful noise"... There was a damned lot of joy in those notes (and I'm not even Christian!) These were absolutely lovely, and a delight to listen to!
Si-ing-ing night High-five-ing night No-thing is calm We're dan-cing right! Round the tall Christ-mas tree, Mo-ther and child; Cir-cle-ing grace-ful-ly Laugh-ing and wild.
BEST O holy night ever! The other two I didn't quite believe possible in ragtime, but what joy it brings to otherwise, dare I say it, rather dreary songs. Sometimes they're solemn, or meaningful, but I so love the joyful side of this! I love ragtime, boogie, swing, etc. I'd love to see more of this. Subscription earned.
Many moons ago a neighbouring school's music teacher was visiting ours and he played us Silent Night in ragtime (not as well as Jonny, though!). Our own music teacher walked in, stood open-mouthed for a moment - and promptly fainted! It was OK, she recovered quickly and he agreed not to treat "her" piano like that again! Happy days.
This was delightful! Carol of the Bells had almost this creepy vibe - super dramatic! But each of them was really fun. I would definitely enjoy Christmas music more in this format.
oh you definitely SHOULD! suddenly they became a lot more listenable to me! but then i'm not a fan of Christmas songs. your skill and enthusiasm made them fun and exciting.
I feel like I've already heard the O Holy night one played over supermarket radio (interrupted by 'Cleanup In Aisle 4') followed by an Idol-like version of Away in a Manger.
I was just thinking about Jo Ann Castle earlier today and her amazing talent of playing ragtime. Carol of the Bells sounds like a different song in ragtime style. This was a cool video.
I don't think anyone could argue that if these had been how Christmas songs were played all along - or even, if this became all that was played - then Christmas would be even more jovial a time than it already is! (albeit, after a period of adjustment, in the side case) Lots of dancing and energy, there would be! Which is something I would think would be important way back when, as it would generate lots of body heat... Not only would you keep warm, but the room(s) gathered in would also benefit and be warmer! 😉 I think the conversion could use some tweaking, as I find there was a lot of recognizability lost in your rendition (not that I'm a musician, so I couldn't do better! lol). Still, I think you've succeeded in busting the myth of "should never", as *_overall,_* I think they were rather enjoyable! 👍
Wow, how fun! The ragtime style is so cool that I really have to focus on hearing the melody of the traditional songs. Incredible talent! I'm curious to know the brand of the piano. I'd like a traditional one, but it just might not be possible for me, and this one has great sound.
I played Hooly Night/Minuit Chrietien on an orchestra for our christmas concerts and I think my conductor would burst his gut hearing the ragtime version xD
The part in Carol of the Bells where the bass walks down and the melody walks up was straight fire damn.
!!!
This
Classic ragtime :) you can see how much Liszt influenced such composers as Joplin and Gottschalk. But I agree, it WAS fire!!!
Seems like my family will have to listen to christmas ragtime from now on
I want a full carol of the bells in ragtime, that was actually really good.
I like it BETTER in Ragtime! The original hits me like a nicotine fit! LOL.
If you don't release a Ragtime Christmas album I'm going to cry
That’s all i want for Christmas
Just don't cry in ragtime
I’d buy the whole album on iTunes and irl for my car
I’d buy it!
I get so tired of hearing the same Christmas music over and over. It gets old like the second day, and retail things it's the shopping soundtrack the day after Halloween. This would be a breath of fresh air without destroying the spirit.
I've sung O Holy Night and reduced an audience to tears. This version reduced me to tears...of laughter. Bravo!
People usually cry when I sing too!
That song done well is almost always tear inducing.
@@super_siriIt brings tears when it’s done terribly as well…
@D71219ONE well yeah...but out of pain not emotion.

I'd still buy a whole album of these.
Me too
Same!
Me too!
If only all christmas carols were done in ragtime style, maybe id be more incline to enjoy this time of year. Well done sir on your style. 😊👍
It would be a major improvement for them.
Creating my own ragtime and boogie woogie Christmas playlist

A 100 years ago maybe. Now, ragtime versions of well known songs just sound like caricature.
@@theothertonydutch Perhaps. But it still keeps the art form alive, hopefully so that others may (re)discover it.
Carol of the Bells isn’t the original form anyway, the melody is a Ukrainian New Years folk song.
You are awesome!
Come to think of it, "Jingle Bells" would sound terrific in ragtime.

Nice n slow 🐌
Batman smells!
Carol of the Bells lit my brain up like a christmas tree. MORE PLEASE :)
Bloody Hell's bells!

Your left hand control is just out of this world
Welcome back, Jonny. I for one have missed your gloriously insane ragtime videos.
Hope you're well and have a lovely holiday. 😊👍
It’s good to see that you‘re back! Have a nice christmas, I will definitely play ragtime christmas songs from now on!
HOLY CRAP!!! You still exist!!!
I have always loved the harmonic possibilities behind O Holy Night, and your rendition knocked those progressions out of the park! Love this.
Awesome. We had a 103 yr old friend in N Idaho who loved playing old ragtime tunes, but I don't remember her ever playing Christmas Carols that way.
So cool, thank you for sharing!
I’m usually pretty “Bah humbug” about Christmas, but this one put a smile on my face.😅
Wow... That's brilliant 😲
I loved Carol of the Bells! They all sounded awesome, but bells was my favorite. You made them work.
Can you please do more of these turning songs into ragtime videos?
Well this was a wonderful surprise. Carol of the bells was my favorite.
I worked nearly 20 years in retail, and the holidays are the hardest time to be there. Listening to Christmas music All day, every day, from November till January. I just didn't want to hear it at family events.
This is a whole new twist on the same old thing!
Good to see you back in action man
I remember the good old days when Jonny’s ragtime would shake the shelves and we thought the candle was going to fall on his head. 😂
Merry Christmas Jonny!
I missed this Ragtime series. Thank you for bringing it back for the holidays!
Brilliant! Carols were originally danced as well as sung, so this is totally appropriate.
Nice to see you back again, wishing you and yours a Very Merry Christmas and thanks for taking the time to pkay for us. Regards Richard 🇬🇧
Love it My grandmother played 🎉ragtime like thAt. 😢Thanks Jonny! April
For decades, The Carol of the Bells has been in an endless loop in my mind. Thank you for finally ending it!
Love these, especially O Holy Night
Magnificent! Thank you and Merry Christmas
please do these as full songs, they were great
You made those songs get an upgrade. Love ragtime
Yeah.. you are face meltingly brilliant. Love your lessons on PWJ as well!
You are spot on - love ragtime but these are all too fast for these beloved Xmas classics! ❤️
I'm gonna try one of your courses
I agree Ragtime is fun!! I'm thoroughly impressed!! That Carol of the Bells Wow!!
LOVE it !!!! And like Art Dreese said, I'd buy a whole album of these!
2:13 Okay, the ragtime was amazing as always but...I also loved those jazz harmonies there.
Whereas I liked them in spite of, rather than because of the jazz harmonies.
How to turn a Christmas party into a Christmas Par-tay! Very fun music, well done!
Good performance
Always impressed to watch you playing piano 🎹 Thank for sharing with all of us

These were absolutely lovely, and a delight to listen to!
Welcome back and a very Merry Christmas to you and yours.
It's a Christmas Miracle! Christmas Carols that actually make me smile.
I expected Silent Night to be one of the three. The ragtime rendition of O Holy Night was great! Carol of the Bells was nicely done as well.
tremendous great interpretations what fine musician to pull these off like that
great audio in my HT- nailed it!

And YAY for picking my two favorite ones for your arrangements! This gave me some much needed dopamine. Thank you!!
I like these songs better in ragtime. Maybe Christmas would have been better for me if I had seen this video before or on the holiday. Your’e great!

I totally agree about not playing the 1st and 3rd songs in ragtime style but the 2nd one was absolutely awesome!!!

I clicked on this completely unprepared. I was not expecting you to go so damn hard and I've never been happier to be surprised.
Totally awesome - and comes this from an adorer of Xmas songs
I love this! Thank you!
Every year about this time I pull up a playlist of some of Joann Castle's Christmas performances and yours are great but she is truly magnificent
I feel like I've already heard the O Holy night one played over supermarket radio (interrupted by 'Cleanup In Aisle 4') followed by an Idol-like version of Away in a Manger.

haha, so nice,
especially impressed with your Shchedryk's arrangement
Very upbeat. Love it.
Thank you, Jonny! I actually like Christmas music again!
This blew my mind! Amazing!
i almost vaulted across the room with first reveal! loved and subscribed.
Ok so these were the first 3 songs that came to mind when I read the question. You made them work with ragtime and maintained their beauty. 👏👏👏
I'd love a full christmas ragtime album. And some lyrics over that ragtime rendition of christmas songs would be awesome too.
Nice to see you back mate!
Wow. Just wow.
Oh men that is brillant ! more of that pls.
You're back❤️❤️ Carol of the bells was magical.
Amazed by your skills!
Really like the ragtime versions. ✌️

That was awesome! I would listen to that on repeat! 🤩
I was thinking 'Coventry Carol' would be a bad one to play in ragtime.
Jonny, you never cease to amaze me!
